Toka Biv - Overnight tramp in the Ruahine Ranges

so I'm back at the roen ranges I'm about to head up to toab Biv tonight um it's quite late in the day it's about almost 1:30 and it's uh quite chilly down here so I reckon will be quite cold overnight um I have brought the tent because toab Biv is of course a Biv or a dog box so it's only got two bunks uh two mattresses and um so there could easily be two other trampers up there or we're actually still in the Raw too so there could easily be two Hunters up there as well so I have brought a tent um this first section of the track is um cross farmland and then we'll hit the Forest Park grandry and I think we're going up that Ridge to that High Point you're making me cross the river immediately I think I'm going to go along that way that was a hard one to get over right that didn't take an hour took about half an hour okay so we're going this way 2 hours to the tops apparently I hope that's the case so the sign says 2 hours it's just turn 2:00 and uh we'll see how I do to get to the top somewhere over here is the track oh there it is up there so now I've got about uh 7 to 800 M of climb up to to the high point and uh yeah from there go north for about a k and we'll get to the hut [Music] [Music] [Music] officially made it Leatherwood altitude we're about 100 m away I think from the tree line in terms of elevation I think all these cracks in the ground might be indicating a future slip because over here there is a big slip and uh I think when that went down it's tugged a lot of ground with it and uh caused things like this can see some of the RO High Peaks this is the AOA River Valley um you've got I think that's mang Mahou Sanga Huts over there to heckinger that Peak there and uh we're about to go up this way [Music] [Music] [Music] I think we've made it top of toer sure is windy and uh that's where I've come from those Mark the turnoff which means somewhere around here is the track down to toab Biv [Music] I um spotted it take a bir I uh thought the track actually kept on going up that way but oh it's down there I didn't see the turn off to it here it is this whole area is real boggy so uh keep to the track otherwise you'll uh get wet feet little water tank and there is in fact a toilet too look at this how awesome just two mattresses spot for a candle window and a Hut book how awesome we've come from way up the some big hills around Moon's coming up we'll probably get pretty good sunrise in the morning there's no bit of feeling when you finally get to deack and lie down at the hut you arrive at especially when the weather is wild outside for I'm the um first person at toab Biv in almost a month first person here in the book for April and there were only three other groups that came through in May there's your to for too Biv when it's clear it has quite a good view but it's quite literally just a seat so I'm heading away from toab Biv now it's uh currently 850 um I'm not sure how long it's going to take to get to the top but um thankfully it's not going to be too windy until I get to the very top and uh it'll be quite exposed f I've um finally got some Shelter From The Wind I've uh come down from the high point and down here's just the bottom of the saddle and uh I'm climbing back up to TOA Peak which is that way um but the wind was really strong and it's not raining but it's blowing all the moisture from the clouds out and so I'm getting quite wet as was the camera but um got my first little bit of shelter and uh once I'm over this and I'm going back up to toker I'll be in the wind again pretty much all the way until probably I hit the tree line so I'll try move through it quickly [Music] I might be dropping below the cloud starting to clear up back in the trees now I'm about 1K from the car park uh it's just quarter past it's just turned quter 12 now and uh so I've been going for a little over 4 hours um since I left toker B um yeah almost done probably I don't know where to cross I can't where I across last time I'm just going to have to try leap across here not the most graceful back at the start I was actually hoping to today uh come up from the Biv and come along the ridge this way try that out for something new on the way down but um the wind was I just wanted to get out of the wind so I'm glad I did that but um thanks if you watched to the end uh I would recommend toab bth if you can find it it's um really nice but the track's a little overgrown in Steep and places but it's definitely worth it if you get good weather [Music]
