expected to order 23 billion dollars in across the board budget cuts into effect at the end of the day regardless of what the negotiators do on capitol hill in southern spain this morning there was a very happy and a very emotional reunion for the five-year-old daughter of a lebanese millionaire who was kidnapped 11 days ago police stormed the house where she was held and they rescued her the girl melody nikachian was not harmed and she was reunited with her father telling him i'm fine papa don't cry officials arrested three people including one man who was seriously wounded in the shootout with police the family said no ransom was paid federal investigators in denver are analyzing engine noises that came from that continental airlines dc-9 jet just before it crashed on sunday investigators are looking over pieces of the plane trying to pinpoint the cause of that crash analysts are also trying to trace the source of what sounds like engine surging picked up by the cockpit recorder and they're looking into a continental theory that wind turbulence or vortex came from a nearby delta jet the operation of that aircraft creates vortex we know there's vortex but whether or not vortex could have been sustained in a way for distance and for time that would have affected this flight we have no idea overseas british investigators say they have not ruled out anything as they continue to look for the cause of this week's subway fire government officials have ordered a full inquiry into the fire at london's busiest subway station last night commuters left flowers at the roped off entrances to the king's cross station in memory of the 30 people who died in the fire some of the flowers were left for a firefighter who died while leading the rescue effort 21 other victims who were badly burned are still hospitalized in london this morning secretary of state schultz and soviet foreign minister shepard naza will meet in geneva next week to go over the details of touring a chemical weapons storage facility near salt lake city the soviets have proposed that a treaty banning chemical weapons be drawn up within six months the u.s team which visited a similar site last month in the soviet union called the deadline artificial and rejected it there's more opposition this morning to a plan to allow soviet leader gorbachev to address congress next month while he's in washington for the summit house republican leader bob michael has told the state department that permitting the speech would be a terrible mistake 79 other house members have called on the white house to call off the gorbachev address moving up now on 34 after seven again brian all right john thanks very much joe witte has a check of our friday morning weather in just a moment then mike this ski report from nbc news at sunrise joe witte joins us for a check of the weather that's right and you're uh fresh off to europe here pretty soon aren't you oh that's right yes we're leaving a little bit later we're heading off to do uh three programs from europe with the armed forces one from the mediterranean one from west germany and one from england well it's going to be a bit windy and cold when you get there but certainly not as cold as what it's going to be over the weekend in new england maybe we won't go maybe you want to stick around go back up to college boy it is going to be cold on saturday the coldest of the season for parts of the northeast folks in southeastern virginia bring in the petunias because it is going to be below freezing on saturday morning and for you folks up in northern maine watch out you could just be glanced by a real nor'easter that will hit the canadian maritimes and it's going to be stormy out in the west by sunday the storm that hits the pacific coast moves into the rocky mountain states giving you folks some rains and real high mountain snows there chance of even some thunderstorms over parts of new mexico and arizona but the east coast i see what willard means with that little effect nice effect guys uh meanwhile the sunday the east coast is going to be cold but dry and sunny we'll need the sunshine to warm us up today it is going to be cold and windy and we have winter storm watches and warnings for very strong lake squall snows around buffalo area and parts of northeastern ohio as the winds pick up this afternoon behind this very cold front we're going to have snowfalls locally in some of those areas up to a foot or more meanwhile here's the storm that's going to miss most of the east coast give a glancing blow to the state of maine today and tonight so winter storm watches are up for tonight down to the south a chilly start but a mild high of 51 degrees by the afternoon chats of a thunderstorm down by miami by later in the day mild in phoenix great for tennis 82 degrees with plenty of sunshine there that's my national forecast now here's what's going on in your part of the world hi everybody i'm bruce schweigler stand by for an extremely cold blast of air coming in for the weekend today will be rainy mid 40s falling back this afternoon as winds kick into the northwest and pick up all right much more coming up next half hour in fact we'll talk about why travelers advisories won't be heard much coming up this next winter and now here is nancy foreman thank you joe and now the jensen account is sponsored by ibm here's bryant there's a question for 7 38 on friday morning how would you like a moonlighting job that pays as much as 230 dollars a week doesn't take any extra time and gives you a free commute to your regular job well mike jensen our chief financial correspondent says he's found such a thing good morning michael good morning brian this is a very unusual moonlighting job and it solved a major problem for a company in new jersey that needed more employees during its peak workload so it recruited some of its customers to help out it's 6 30 in the morning and bernie marshall and his wife marie are heading for work like thousands of other new jersey commuters marie drops bernie off at the bus depot for his trip into new york city where he works as a telephone company troubleshooter but unlike the other commuters bernie doesn't head for the back of the bus for a quick read of the newspaper and the snooze on his way into the city bernie takes over the driver's seat he's one of 20 commuters hired by new jersey transit to drive the bus one round trip per day during the rush hour we had flyers on the bus i was taking into new york they said why pay to drive to go to work when you can make money doing and since i was looking for money [Music] looking for a job of the type it seemed like the perfect answer bernie saves 59 a month in commuting costs and gets about a hundred and ten dollars a week for driving ira guns is another commuter bus driver his real job is working for the government the defense department but he says he likes the extra money he makes about 230 dollars a week and he loves to drive the bus to take care of his passengers sometimes i have to keep it warmer than i like because i know back there it's cooler than where it is in the front i try to work with these thoughts in mind be fair he has an added advantage though in that he knows what it's like to be a commuter so he relates to his passengers in to a greater extent than than a normal driver might hindley says there's also another benefit for the passengers and for the company well it helps us to keep the fares down the average cost of a regular driver including benefits costs somewhere around 20 21 dollars an hour the average cost of a part-time driver is somewhere around 10 dollars an hour as part-time driver bernie marshall finishes up his day's work at the telephone company his mind starts drifting toward the bus depot at 4 30 he makes the switch puts on his new jersey transit tie and vest and heads for his bus then it's the long drive back to new jersey finally at the end of a long day the satisfaction of another trip safely made i've been complimented but never complained about so i guess that makes me a good bus driver the commuter drivers take a ten hour training course then they have to join the union and they pay twenty five dollars a month in union dues most of the drivers by the way don't want any publicity the two you just met were the only two we found who would talk about driving the bus the others don't want their regular bosses to know what they're doing don't they create some kind of an insurance problem for the bus companies no they've taken that into account they meet all the requirements with their training program and with belonging to the union let's talk a little bit about what's going on in washington today and that is the um the last chance to play beat the clock what kind of a signal is being sent to wall street if graham rudman hollings has to be implemented it's a bryant it's an unbelievable signal you would think that with the amount of time they have had to come up with an additional six or seven billion dollars in cuts now that's not small change but when you consider that they're going for 30 billion 23 billion comes from graham rudman that's going to send a very bad signal to the world financial communities but hasn't haven't those communities been pessimistic all along i mean what's likely to be the reaction today and perhaps more importantly next week if nothing's done yes they have been very skeptical about whether or not they'd be able to come up with anything in washington but it is still a bad signal it may not trigger an immediate massive sell-off but the perception that the rest of the world has is that the united states is this profligate country overspending undisciplined they can't come up with any way of saving that money and this would reinforce that impression but you do see a sell-off coming i see a sell-off coming sure it's not going to be 500 points it's not going to be like black monday on the 19th but if they don't come to an agreement it's going to have a very bad effect on the dollar and on the stock market final quick note who who is the street seeing as the obstructionists in all this both sides they see it in the world all around the president but it's partly the white house and it's partly congress wrangling okay mike thanks very much try to have a good weekend despite it all 43 past the hour as we disappear for a moment we take a look at mike's economic forecast for the next four weeks seven years ago mcneil under his belt to make a middle-aged matinee idol envious valerie's family is his third tv show and now his first feature film is out jason bateman joins us this morning how are you in the movie version of your life in your fantasy was a werewolf movie going to be your first feature not at all but it is it is and it was sort of scary because we didn't wait so long uh and turned down a few projects before we we did finally arrive at teen wolf uh i suppose mostly for the reasons of uh creative control we got a lot of creative control and uh who's this we were talking about my father and i he's also producing the film yeah uh and it seemed like good timing and it was also a uh it seemed like a nice thing to bridge a gap between a situation comedy and a motion picture career teen wolf two t-o-o you join a distinguished pantheon of former werewolves in in in movie history like who who else has has played werewolves in their careers i suppose uh the first one to combine would be mike fox uh that was seated the first one and uh michael landon uh lon chaney i suppose long time ago did that make it easier knowing that a lot of other pretty good people had done it too uh no i never really thought about it i mostly just thought about it from the makeup point of view because i'm sort of interested in all that stuff from the makeup point of view yeah the uh you know the appliances that they put on your face we've got a clip to look at where we kind of see a glimmer of of some of the appliances but not a full-out wolf why don't we play the group okay i've always been amazed when actors can make their blood vessels lurch and stuff but how do you get your forehead to do that well it took a lot of work uh no uh that was just a foam piece that they put on my forehead with a couple of bladders underneath it nothing some guy behind me you're um everybody knows your sister is also in the best business and uh she once said recently that um the having a role on family ties and getting to go to work where it was so much fun and on top of that they paid you money was just unbelievable isn't that what people generally think of what what you do that basically it's just a whole lot of fun for a whole lot of money it is for the most part and it is a lot of money but what people really usually don't realize is that uh work the hardest work i think for me at least is is after you leave the the studio you know you've got to um if you're not in a good mood you've you've well you know you've got to be in a good mood for your your public and you're always jason bateman you're never just this exactly yeah you can't you can't leave it at the set a guy with the the tv career you've had at such a young age have there been um if they have they've escaped my notice but have there been disappointments well sure um uh people don't don't know when to deploy when the disappointments were because you know for readings for films and stuff like that the jobs you didn't get exactly but you can't look at that um like you know you're a bad actor what about ratings do you have to worry about ratings and and if the ratings aren't so good does that reflect you personally well there was a show a couple years uh that i did called it's remove uh where i was the lead and it survived for that 18 shows so it was a short-lived series but it was fun and it and it did go down the tubes and it got the axe but people don't really come yelling at you because there are so many people that they go into a product well especially when they turn around and they give you a role on another show means that somebody's still got confidence i guess yeah yeah well let's whatever brings you back next time we'll look forward to it thank you regards to the family all right and we'll be back after this [Music] tuesday the boy who had to become a man the man who had to create a miracle the movie that became a legend the karate kid tuesday in boston so many of the season's most beautiful gifts come from only one place copley place [Music] many celebrities have won the fight against breast cancer find out what they're doing to help others cope on friday's evening magazine at 7 30. [Music] jordan marsh super sale 20 to 50 off selected items store-wide now through sunday hurry our customers are going fast flying the bay state tonight at 6 on tv 4. heart disease remains the number one killer in the united states but experts say the death toll could be reduced with earlier diagnosis and treatment our doctor art your lean agrees today he reports on the ultimate diagnostic test for heart disease good morning eric good morning bryant we're talking about cardiac catheterization most of the cardiac deaths are related to atherosclerosis and blockage of the coronary arteries those are the blood vessels that feed the muscle of the heart today we're going to show you tests that literally let us look inside the coronary arteries cardiac catheterization and coronary angiography 45 year old dennis sullivan has had three heart bypass operations already when we taped him at the arizona heart institute he was being prepped for a cardiac catheterization because he had suffered severe chest pain again this procedure would tell his doctors if the bypasses were still open dr sam kinerd will perform the cardiac catheterization by inserting a tiny hollow tube the catheter into an artery in mr sullivan's arm slowly threading it up until the tip of it reaches his heart then a small amount of dye which shows up on an x-ray is injected through the tube the flow of the dye which appears dark on the screen outlines the coronary arteries their appearance is recorded in the form of a moving x-ray called an angiogram by studying these images doctors can tell if the coronary arteries are narrowed down or open at all in mr sullivan's case the pictures will show if the bypasses that were put in earlier have narrowed down or stopped functioning as the test for his left coronary artery begins the dye flows only a short distance and then stops as if it has hit a dead end that's because only a small twig of that artery remains open in mr sullivan the artery has been closed down by atherosclerosis as dr keinert moves the catheter from the left coronary artery to the bypasses he explains what he is seeing the large portion of the vessels or the bypasses and when it enters a small vessel that's his own arteries so the bypass is the large part that begins at the tip of the catheter and then end in the small vessel after finding several still healthy bypasses dr keinert found one that appeared to be blocked it's just a little nubbin because it's it's stopped up so you don't see the dye go down the bypass before the procedure was over two of mr sullivan's bypasses were found to be blocked however because the major bypasses supplying blood to his heart are still open dr kinder believes that the condition is not life-threatening dr keinert summarizes mr sullivan's test results for us this is a picture of the heart the patient's left coronary artery is completely blocked shortly after it comes off the right coronary artery is similarly blocked down in its middle portion the patient had bypasses using veins and three of these are open there are two bypasses which just look like little nubbins on the aorta these are bypasses which went to other vessels but they've stopped up all the way down and therefore one can only see this little nubbin that's left that comes off the aorta cardiac catheterization has a very definite role in the diagnosis of heart disease it may reveal problems that can be seen no other way but it's not a test to be taken lightly it is an operative procedure that can have serious complications before anyone agrees to have it done you should understand what the risks are and what you personally can gain by having that test done right what kind of risk i mean you make it sound very obvious well it is an operation that goes into an artery and it's possible to have bleeding it's possible to have damage to the artery in the most extreme and i might point out very rare cases death can occur as a result of this test to be fair i should point out that that those kinds of serious complications are much more likely to happen in someone who really has a very very diseased heart who is sort of on the brink to begin with all right you've given us a lot of information all week long and in what was a very compressed time obviously we're not going to digest it all in that shorter time somebody who is concerned about their heart they go to their doctor where there's a lot of options out there thallium scanning ekgs the cardiac catheterization can you just trust your physician to pick the one for you or should you say hey i want to know more about i think you have to be questioning i think you have to ask with respect to each test what do i have to gain from this test how is taking this test going to change the way you care for me if a doctor cannot explain to you reasonably how this will change what he or she would do anyway and i wouldn't go through the test if it came down to a cardiac cath which is a surgical procedure in a sense i'd probably get a second opinion before having it but the objectives are early diagnosis and early treatment that's the key to saving your life arguing thank you you're welcome here's nancy foreman thank you brian today's heart care segment with dr arculene was sponsored by buffron from bristol myers an important message on heart attacks from the makers of bufferin after two heart attacks and bypass surgery i knew my life had to change direction so i follow my doctor's advice i'm on a regimen that includes a healthy diet weight control regular exercise and taking aspirin if you've had a heart attack only your doctor knows what's best for you so follow his advice i did now i'm enjoying life [Music] with the power of an upright in the palm of will be with us in our second hour we're gonna be talking with our gene shower more forgiving normal we're back inside studio 3b on this friday morning here with jane pauley i'm brian gumbel the budget negotiations in the game of beat the clock that's being played in washington is our top story of this morning john palmer is going to give us an update in just a moment you know from the title that a movie called house p housekeeping is not an epic on the order of say the last emperor but it's supposed to be a great little movie and we'll meet the star christine lotte and then later we'll meet john lone star of the bonafide epic the last emperor and father andrew greeley is back with his new novel his 15th what's the name of another film house peak i like that one 801 let's go to here's john palmer brian jane thank you good morning again president reagan says he will order 23 billion dollars worth of automatic spending cuts today mr reagan says he will put the budget balancing graham rudman hollings law into effect even if white house and congressional negotiators do agree on an alternative deficit reducing plan before tonight's deadline the two sides failed again last night to reach an agreement saying they needed more time to work out details earlier this morning on today house minority leader bob michael told jane that wall street and world financial markets should be patient in their reactions to the deficit talks well i think they ought to certainly take some measure of comfort in what we're doing because as we indicated we get a two-year agreement that's going to be meaningful savings and as a backup frankly the see questioning goes into effect and the automatic cuts will take place and with those folks they seem to want the expenditures down with a minimum of taxes and that's what they're going to get either democrats nor republicans like the automatic cuts because they affect programs across the board chief economics correspondent irving r levine is in our washington studio this morning the report on just what will be cut and what won't be cut in the new law good morning irving john good morning government workers in washington and elsewhere should be bracing for the graham rudman hollings across-the-board spending cuts that now are unavoidable the cuts will be sweeping in pentagon spending cuts of 10.5 percent most other government spending from the white house on down would be cut 8.5 percent soldiers pay would not be cut but money for fuel for navy ships in the persian gulf would be recipients of social security and of poverty program benefits are exempt from the cuts workers in the internal revenue service the state department customs and all other government agencies would have less money for everything from travel to office supplies workers would face temporary layoffs even such vital services as the faa would be hit at a time when there is growing concern over air safety the draconian graham rudman cuts don't become permanent until 10 days after the ax hits the heat will be on congress and the white house during those 10 days to agree on a substitute deficit reduction plan that is easier to live with john thank you for that report irving the soviet union this morning confirms that secretary of state schultz will meet soviet foreign minister shepard naza next week in geneva the two men will work out the final details for the december reagan gorbachev summit in washington republican opposition continues to build against a white house plan to ask soviet leader gorbachev to address a joint session of congress white house correspondent andrea mitchell has more more than 75 house republicans including presidential candidate jack kemp are vowing to walk out if gorbachev is permitted to speak to congress do not let that communists come into this chamber house speaker jim wright says the white house wanted the speech the white house denies it but word of it has set off a right-wing revolt the act of addressing a joint session is a honor that has only been granted to a few international leaders in our entire history actually there have been hundreds of such speeches some by admired leaders others by outsiders ranging from johnny cash to dictators such as cuba's batista when it comes to gorbachev the republican leader cannot control his troops they can fear they can sneer there can be derogatory things done that frankly i think are demeaning to the house as an institution white house officials are saying the embarrassing result of all this will be no gorbachev speech not surprisingly they're blaming the mix-up on speaker wright saying that he jumped the gun on the announcement so much for dayton at least between the president and the speaker of the house andrea mitchell nbc news at the white house a search is underway this morning for a missing navy plane over the indian ocean the plane failed to return to the carrier uss midway thursday after a routine flight spanish police this morning rescued a five-year-old girl held hostage for 11 days in southern spain melody nikachian the daughter of a lebanese millionaire was kidnapped while on her way to school her abductors threatened to starve the child to death if 13 million dollars in ransom was not paid spanish police early this morning stormed the house where the girl was being held three men were captured two others escaped no ransom was paid for melody and she was unharmed it's now six minutes after the hour of eight back to brian all right john thanks very much let's take a check of the weather and joe witty's got that in for willard's chat that's right now we've got some good news for you and for you folks out there this winter you're not going to hear the words travelers advisory very often now that's not to say there won't be a lot of snow but there is a recent change in the official verbiage from the national weather service the old terminology traveler's advisory will be changed to snow advisory or freezing rain and slate advisory and here's why meteorologists don't feel qualified as highway engineers moving away from the travelers advisory to a event specific advisory what we're really trying to do is get away from forecasting road conditions and traveling conditions we're trying to forecast now meteorological events uh for example if we have a snow situation coming up let's say for the new york metropolitan area and we don't expect the snow to be heavy enough to really warrant issuing a warning we will issue a snow advisory rather than a traveler's advisory and give specific snow amounts in the in the advisory all right today we're not worried about advisories we're worried about storm warnings for parts of the northeast we have a major coastal storm that will really brush the northeast but we do have winter storm watches posted for the state of maine for tonight and probably for tomorrow meanwhile strong gusty winds across the great lakes some of the lake effect snows there could add up to a foot or more in that section of the country the rest of the country in pretty good shape plenty of sunshine thanks to a cold fair weather high over the south and over the central portion of the country sunny skies and warm temperatures in phoenix but it will be wet in the pacific northwest that's my national forecast now here's what's happening in your part of the world good morning everybody i'm bruce schweigler it'll be rainy and in the 40s today falling back late today as winds shift into the northwest and increase and really frigid air pours in our direction some snow this evening much more coming up in the next half hour and now here's jane christine latte has been nominated for every acting award from the academy to the golden globe but always for supporting actress playing opposite such notables as richard dreyfuss or al pacino mary tyler moore goldie hawn to drop a few names well now she has the lead role the starring role in a film called housekeeping it's a bill forsyth film opening next week is this going to be the movie that makes christine lottie a household name they were all supposed to do that okay this is going to be the one christine i don't know i don't know i think it's um it's not a blockbuster movie uh it's a small movie and um kind of offbeat and i don't know i i really love this movie if if you've seen bill forsythe movies local hero gregory's girl to say a small movie is is a very nice thing to say yes yeah yeah you have a reputation for taking some some off beat roles who are you this time i play sylvie who is um an eccentric uh to say the least some people might call her insane but i think that she's just eccentric she's a transient she rides around in freight cars and um has odd jobs around the country and takes place in 1952 and she's she takes in her two orphaned nieces right she comes back to finger bone idaho to raise her two finger bones and straight down to raise her two orphan nieces yeah and the town can't quite tolerate sylvie's ways the nieces are a little perplexed too yeah we have a clip wherein the nieces are caught playing hooky by their aunt but she doesn't punish them how many takes did that scene take a lot too many you burned up a lot of curtains yeah all right you were i'm supposed to be interviewing diane keaton this role was was originally intended for diane keaton right and then she dropped out and it was at cannon films and then i took over and it was at columbia will she be gnashing her teeth oh i don't know yeah why is it that uh or is it that sometimes actresses are put into a category with others like you might be in the sort of a diane keaton type is it does it work that way yeah i think it's something really profound and complex like tall and brunette who else is in the tall and brunette category with you i guess sigourney weaver is tall and brunette oh poor thing wouldn't mind being in that category myself bill forsyth it almost gives you a co-directing credit what does he mean by that well he's very generous and it's not quite accurate i coached uh one little girl one day really there they weren't trained actresses they were cast because they were so close to the characters themselves and i i just coached this little girl because she couldn't cry very easily and i manipulated her and told her terrible things about herself so that she would cry wait a minute seriously you gave her acting tips or you reduced her to psychological blubber i did that yeah i did the laughing she's laughing i don't know about you are you ready i mean you're not um nobody's ever said you were mad they have always said you were a great actress are you anything like uh sylvia sylvie at times yes i really could identify with sylvia a little touched a little touched i can't quite toe the line you know start to draw my own sometimes and it doesn't quite fit the norm yeah well good it's important for the rest of us to know where the line is by people like you who don't tow it well i guess yeah thank you christine thank you and we'll be back in a moment this is today on nbc [Music] those you're ready to feel that way again then you're ready for the new audi 19 your greater boston audi dealers invite you to test drive the new audi 90s at your earliest convenience on after eight this morning sports blackmail a major league team is good for a city's image not to mention its economy as a result owners often use that leverage to make the kinds of demands no city would ever accept from a normal businessman the los angeles raiders are one of pro sport's most successful franchises for example but the raiders are also one of the most mobile just five years ago the team moved to los angeles from oakland now the raiders are ready to move again this time their destination irwindale california we didn't go into this thing for economic benefits we did it for community recognition and for the challenge of it increasingly city and stadium officials around the country these days are finding themselves facing ultimatums play ball with the owners or else example miami where joe robbie made good on his threat to move the dolphins out of the orange bowl or st louis or even fans have now given up hope of keeping bill bidwell's football cardinals in town or who can forget baltimore where bob irsay used the dark of night to try to hide his shame as he moved the colts for richer pastures in indianapolis small wonder officials say owners are out of bounds we don't have enough money in the county in the cities for law enforcement for street resurfacing and things of that sort though nfl owners are the most frequent abusers of sports power basketball and baseball owners have made similar moves or at least threaten them in towns from new york to san francisco not surprisingly for every city that box and an owner's demands there are dozens of others dozens waiting to jump in and meet those demands because pro sports is big business if i have a football team and you don't i'm going to get more business than you are phoenix is one of the cities currently wooing the st louis football cardinals phoenix mayor terry goddard is that our nbc affiliate kpnz tv this morning he's offered the football cardinals 10 million dollars to move to his city mr mayor as i say good morning why don't you tell me why are the cardinals worth that good morning uh what we've offered the cardinals is basically a an attendance package they're worth a lot to a community and any professional team is as your your segment just showed uh what what he would be getting in this sense is a share of luxury boxes and special seating why why do you say the the cardinals are worth that to phoenix i mean what's what are the cardinals going to do for phoenix that phoenix doesn't otherwise have i mean is is buffalo any greater city than it already had been because it has the bills for example or sacramento any greater a city than it was because it has the nba kings i don't think there's any question there's an enhancement from professional football professional baseball right now phoenix is the largest market in the country that doesn't have either so we're definitely interested and we're definitely in the market but we're not throwing away the kind of sums that you just mentioned that irwindale is throwing out because we do have a lot to offer we feel it offers not only direct economic advantage but it's very important in promoting our community around the country we've gotten tremendous economic payoff from the fiesta bowl in tempe which is one of the new year's bowls and really helps out our our general state and our economy let me add that irwindale is offering to assist al davis the raiders owner in the construction of a 100 plus million dollar stadium that he would then keep after it's paid for let me go out to san francisco where bob luery is the owner of the san francisco baseball giants he is our affiliate kron tv in san francisco where voters recently rejected plans for a new stadium good morning bob hi brian you said you'd move if you didn't get a new stadium you're not going to make good on that threat uh it wasn't a threat brian i'd sure like to clear that up it was just trying to in the form of trying to be honest and said if it doesn't pass what are you going to do i said we can't stay at candlestick park after 1994 when our lease expires so i'm planning and i'm going to investigate the peninsula south of san francisco and communities there to see if we can work out a deal to have a stadium built let me be real blunt about this bob here's the private enterprise right yeah so you could be uh at a form of entertainment but let me add before your question we're also worth a hundred million dollars to a community in economic impact okay but but don't i mean uh plain and simple why should taxpayers help you build a stadium to improve your business because of what for one reason for that statement that i just made that we are good for a community and we bring a lot of business to a community and it's been proven and that's why there are so many communities that have been contacting me ever since that proposition went to defeat in early november you're a veteran of the meat packing business right no oh thank you that was somebody else many years ago i'm in the real estate business in san francisco would would you ever ask the government to assist you in any form of improving that business well you know how you ask for extra stroke sometimes uh sometimes it never hurts to ask so but now baseball has been proven as professional sports how good they are for uh an economy in a community let me go to let me go back to mayor goddard mayor goddard would you ever make that kind of a monetary offer that you're making to the cardinals to any other kind of business well let's bear in mind that the revenue offer that we're making to the cardinals in conjunction with arizona state university is the revenue that's generated by that team we're not putting taxpayer dollars into the pot for mr bidwell the stadium that we're talking about building in phoenix is with private dollars uh and very minor city assistance in terms of relocating the water lines and the sewers okay but you're competing with some other towns for the cardinals among them memphis baltimore jacksonville don't you worry about being used by the cardinals to to up the bid elsewhere well absolutely uh we we don't want to be raiding other communities and we much rather be in a position of expansion uh either baseball or football but uh you know we're interested we don't make any uh disguise about that fact we just met with the commissioner of football yesterday uh to tell him that we were interested and uh so we're in a competitive environment and we're gonna make our best offer bob to your credit out in san francisco you have stated your desire to stay in your area but i mean as an owner who looks out there at what some of the others are doing don't you find it at all embarrassing some of the demands you're seeing uh no well maybe some of them are but i'm just all i can look at is the situation that we have in san francisco and what we're going through and i have made a commitment if all possible to keep it here i know some of the offers that are out there that i've been animated to me by other cities and they're fantastic as you see it the water and owner's obligations to his city to well i think we provide an awful lot of entertainment and a lot of money to a city and i think in my particular case the one in san francisco we were going to try to build that stadium with private funds and uh down the peninsula while the cities will contribute something the the counties or whoever we deal with it will be hopefully primarily done with uh private dollars and so i think that's a good answer to your question mayor goddard final note justice bidwell's turning his back on st louis what makes you think he won't ultimately turn his back on phoenix that's a big concern that's something that we're very very worried about that's why we really are looking for not only saint louis cardinals but also an expansion franchise there's so few to go around but we'd like the the owner uh if they come to phoenix to be a share in the community and in the stadium so that will be sure that they will stay well on that note i'll thank you mayor goddard and as i thank you bob lurie up in uh san francisco let me note that i that we tried to get the pro football owners someone to come in here and talk about their little game of musical cities but they refused what a surprise thanks gentlemen have a good weekend 8 22. we're back after a break this is today on nbc the moment you step on board you'll know you're on a special kind of cruise so please happy anniversary we do more than just serve you our but jack kemp persisted and in 1981 president reagan signed the kemp roth tax cut into law jack kemp was right lower taxes created 14 million new jobs a record in peacetime now the washington insiders are after your paycheck again they say that passage of the biggest tax increase in history in 1982 wasn't enough george bush and bob dole supported that tax increase there's a big difference between southeast moving in this direction it's going to rain all day heaviest in southeastern new england but lighter amounts off to the west that rain is moving in the same direction these clouds are but we also have clouds coming in from this direction there's really frigid air out in the midwest headed toward new england on the heels of this low and frontal system then we have this other ocean storm that's developing the two are going to merge over the maritimes tonight and really pump a frigid flow across this entire region it's going to change our rain to snow squalls and snow late today i hopefully after the homeward bound commute it should be and then it's going to continue through the night with strong and stronger winds blowing out of the northwest rain on cape cod will be changing to snow as well and tomorrow this cold flow is going to continue whipping in here and will cause lake effect snow like they have in buffalo new york to fall over cape cod and still heavy snow squalls to occur in the mountains in fact the potential for heavy snow runs from cape cod up through the eastern portions of maine and on through the mountainous areas of new england it's in the 40s right now storm warnings are displayed along the coast our forecast for boston and vicinity calls for a wild one not so much today rain cool temperatures falling from the 40s winds shifting into the northwest this afternoon maybe a little snow mixing in late in the day the rain then for tonight wow snow squalls windy colder here's your five day outlook calling for a tremendous amount of inclement weather right on through tomorrow and extremely cold 40 below i'm randy price with bruce woodland [Music] nobody does it quite the way that you do on friday life's most embarrassing moment on a um friday morning and looking ahead in this half hour to the star of the the emperor of china it's a bernardo bertolucci film that is getting pretty good reviews in almost every frame is a young man named john lone he'll be with us in the same house as far as we're concerned father andrew greeley is a man for all seasons it seems like he is here spring summer winter and fall to talk about another novel well he's written another novel this new one he calls the rite of spring and he'll be with us to talk richard reifers is a lawyer barbra streisand is his client the movie is nuts they will both be here together for the first time in this half hour here's john palmer to get us started thanks brian the white house is expected to order sweeping budget cuts into effect today 23 billion dollars worth of reductions under the graham rudmund law even so negotiators on capitol hill continue to work on what they hope will be a better plan to cut the deficit on this their last day to do so financial markets overseas are growing impatient with brokers watching the deficit talks going right down to the wire and the automatic cuts about to take effect i think a lot of people are now scared that uh reagan in particular and the republicans are actually going to take the soft option and just take the the simple grand rodman cuts which will be perceived as a failure it's stumbling uh politics are entering into it i think mitchell just sort of stood aside from the market now are waiting to see the agreement when it comes out in spain this morning police carried out a safe and dramatic ending to a kidnapping that began eleven days ago five-year-old melody nikachian the daughter of a lebanese millionaire was reunited with her parents after police stormed the house where she was being held her kidnappers had threatened to kill her unless they were paid millions of dollars in ransom but officials rescued the girl and arrested three people in that raid they're searching now for two other suspects in this country this is a most happy day for another youngster 19 month old jessica mcclure goes home from the hospital in midland texas 35 days after her dramatic rescue from an abandoned well secretary of state schultz leaves this weekend for geneva where he'll meet on monday with soviet foreign minister chevrolet dazza the two men hope to put the final touches on an intermediate weapons treaty they'll also talk more about next month's reagan gorbachev summit in denver investigators have moved the wreckage of that continental airlines dc-9 into a hangar where they continue to look for the cause of sunday's crash federal officials are trying to analyze what they believe is an engine surge picked up by the plane's cockpit voice recorder and in london the british government has ordered an inquiry into the fire at the king's cross subway station there is still no word on the cause of britain's worst subway fire which claimed at least 30 lives and the full senate is to vote today on the nomination of frank carlucci as the next defense secretary easy confirmation is expected it's now moving up on 33 after eight bryant have a good trip thank you very much john we'll from yourself we believe you have a right to expect the same from others coldwell banker expect the best a member of the sears financial network [Music] coming up on 8 35 time for a final check of our friday morning weather and joe woody's got that all right for you lucky folks who are getting away to europe i've got the latest weather map here for you brian it's not bad now but it's going to get colder you have a strong flow coming down from the north let's take a look at that forecast map 72 degrees along the riviera but that will turn cooler frankfurt 53 london 57 and of course cloudy it's going to turn colder i say it's windy very windy there anyway it is windy for you folks around the great lakes too we're not talking about just plain 70s or 60s down into the 50s we're talking about a foot of snow lake effect snows around the buffalo area erie area you folks who live in those bands know what can happen a foot of snow in just a few hours time meanwhile a major storm will just glance maine tonight and tomorrow so keep a weather eye there that's the national weather now here's what's happening in your part of the world hi everybody i'm bruce schweigler stand by for an extremely cold blast of air coming in for the weekend today will be rainy mid 40s falling back this afternoon as winds kick into the northwest and pick up the ingredients to otto jensen of racine wisconsin and he says to try those cupcakes at the brick church fair today in manhattan have a good weekend and now here's gene richard dreyfuss is barbra streisand's lawyer in the new courtroom movie called nuts and they both are excellent in their roles and now for the first time they appear together in an interview and what you are about to see i found both revealing and a rare pleasure it's an understandable arena you know everything is reduced to to uh good and bad and evil and and uh everything is encapsulated in such a way that you can get a grasp of it i would imagine that has a lot to do with it also because the sets are cheap so that earlier in the week barbra streisand was saying how much she admired her character in nuts she liked this person what's your opinion of this character i don't like her as much as barbara liked it well you liked me at the end of the movie i liked her i love him i liked the woman i liked the one i wouldn't have her over for dinner like every week i liked her i admired um i admire her tenacity but uh and i certainly think that she's more than capable and more than uh she has every right to the defense that she gets and that she gives herself as a matter of fact yeah the nice the the interesting tension in this movie is not that you like her but that because you don't like her because you have ambivalent feelings about her you still think this woman deserves this this and this that's part of it and you hope she gets it by the end by the end of it the beginning of the film most people probably you know want to just tell her to keep her mouth shut and behave we have talked and many people have talked about barbra streisand the woman who exists and barbra streisand whom we all think exists so who's the barbra streisand you know and how does it differ from these magazines she's been telling us about i'm putting a new edition on my house i'll put the sprinkles that's a very difficult question maybe i shouldn't be here no it would be wonderful i'd like to hear it he's a man of courage you i mean you you are always preaching the truth here is a chance for dreifus to prove that you can get through life telling the truth i don't want to have to prove this mrs barbara should prove this this truth has never been a big issue to me uh we'll lie about earlier what is the question that's right what is the question who is the barbara streisand you know and is she different from the barber stripes and the public thinks it knows there's a difference between what the public thinks and what writers want the public what the i mean the public wouldn't have such an image because they go and they pay and they like and they clap and they applaud them barbara is a case she's very specific i think if there is one thing that's that you can say is a common denominator to all movie stars especially female movie stars from the time of the beginning of the motion picture business is that they are as opposed to their the other actress they are definite you can see a a clear line around catherine hepburn's personality and betty davis's personality and john crawford's personality and jean arthur and barbra streisand that is what sets them apart and what makes them compelling for us to watch them when you when you observe anything under close scrutiny you can start to argue and say well i don't like that i don't like the way hepburn is feisty or confrontive or sensitive whatever and so people might argue with facets of barbara's personality but the or the personality that she gives off but what barbara is is definite and because she's a woman because she's a woman we take issue with that greater in a greater degree than if you were a man if she were of producer star slash director of the male gender we would accept all of her eccentricities in a much more forgiving normal unquestioning way the fact that she is a woman brings all of those things out in very sharp relief and that's why we're here in a sense discussing barbara's personality we wouldn't be discussing marty ritz personality or mine or yours we would be discussing that doesn't mean that i forgive her eccentricity by the way it just means that's the the phenomena that we're discussing yeah okay that's outstanding do you ever have to resort to a disguise when you go out when i was doing one one part i i put on a blonde wig and it was for a movie called all night long and i went to a country and western bar to study the people in the valley in california and put on a blonde wig and ridiculous clothes and many jewels and all this you know and as soon as i walked into this i was oh hi barbara i don't believe now they think i have this you know lousy taste too it doesn't work because before she walked in the bar she checked the lighting for two hours no i couldn't do anything about that [Laughter] funny funny now you don't take umbrage at richard when he kids you about that i mean she's a perfectionist richard she wants to be barbara's the hardest working person i've ever met in my life thank you and i see the thing is i care as much about how he looks as how high look or any other activation is in the darker first two thirds good question i hear i'm barbara this is richard i just want to make clear to the public that at no time during nuts do you hold your hand in front of richard dreyfuss right now show how that would be had you done that this is barbra streisand that's so familiar though richard dreyfuss and i want to just tell everybody nuts not being a comedy is a brilliant motion picture and you are both outstanding in it there should be a lot of envelopes being opened thank you so much jane will be back with father andrew greeley another book from the good father after these messages she's gotta walk that step to music but some sexy silk is smooth she's a non-nonsense kind of woman you gotta watch her every move no nonsense sharon silky has the same silky look and feel of some department store pantyhose at nowhere near the price but it's never enough and if you're whistling whistle back no nonsense [Music] i switched to fleischmann's after ed's last checkup heart disease my cholesterol test said it was a real possibility so doc suggested a sensible diet turns out a diet low in fat and cholesterol with foods like fleischmann's with no cholesterol can help lower its cholesterol level that's one way to help make his heart healthier took the test again last week i'm down 10 points oh and that does my heart good too fleischmann's part of a head start to a healthier heart champagne is now being served on the promenade deck colombian coffee is now being served in star wars no wonder so many people's preferences lean toward 100 colombian coffee it's the richest coffee in the world and by one valdez gene charlotte calls him a one-man book of the month club so when is father andrew greeley going to be taken seriously as a novelist maybe his 15th novel will do it it's called right of spring and father andrew greeley joins us this morning just so we can keep the record straight you've written a hundred and some books i guess 100 years i stopped counting a long time ago but in novels this is 15 right do you know you are only one novel behind kurt vonnegut well i start a lot later in life than people like kurt vonnegut so i have to play catch-up ball yeah i have to type like the chicago bears you know it's a two-minute drill yeah so answer the question that i raised when is father andrew greeley going to be taken seriously as a novelist has it happened yet i think it's in the process of happening jane there's been some academic symposia in my fiction and scholars are writing books and i'm beginning to get prizes so i guess that's being taken seriously what what really makes a difference to me is the people that read the books take them seriously do you long to be treated as an author when you are here talking about a novel or do you still want to be as the priest well i'm i am a priest and i'm a priest who writes stories so i suppose it's fair enough to treat me as a priest but i'm glad that finally some people are beginning to say hey these are novels that have merit on their own and we can abandon the lead that says he's a priest that writes steamy novels to make money i might prefer gene's line about the book who likes you better literary critics or clerical critics oh i think the scholarly critics are and are much more generous than the questions scholarly critics i mean well professors professors that write scholarly articles to get tenure they have very nice things to say about my voice i'm talking about the the book review critics well the book reviews are more favorable than unfavorable jane i think the ratio is about three to one and that i can live with that heaven knows what are they saying about rights of spring uh they're saying it's a wonderful story and that i i set out to write an adventure story and a love story about rebirth and renewal and make it as as as gripping a story as possible and the critics are by and large saying hey this is this is a great story so what's the story well there's this poor quiet man brendan ryan he's a lawyer in chicago unobtrusive uncombative and he's got a lot of psychic capabilities uh he's he sees things happening in distances and retrocognition but he keeps it all to himself because it's a nuisance that isn't any good and then at one crisis time in his life he falls in love with the perfect woman a woman he's longed for all his life and she vanishes in the face of the earth and brendan ryan says and maybe maybe i created her out of my psychic imagination maybe she really doesn't exist and all the evidence is that she never existed but there's one slight hint that kira kelly might exist and so brendan ryan and his daughter jeannie have to go off to ireland and search for it's a holy grail story if you wish to search a search for the perfect love of search for perhaps for god is represented by kira kelly yeah your readers are predominantly catholic well they're about women about two-thirds catholic about 60 women but then women read more novels than any house so that's not disproportionate how many uh novels have you sold i think it's about 15 million something of the sword maybe a little more than that that counting right of spring would be 15 million so how come you haven't so far i've been made into a movie or a tv miniseries well if anybody nbc is interested i can tell who my agent is i think most of the people responsible for such things say that that they're afraid of the church they're afraid of a catholic boycott and so that's why they steer away from there's talk particularly my next novel angel fire which is about the archangel gabriella a woman angel uh there are people that are very interested in that but i'll believe it when i see it they're really first of all people that make films are not especially sensitive after age fifty five a woman's risk of heart attack triples find out what you can do today call the american heart association friday at nine a salute to brooklyn it may surprise you to know that the last emperor of china died a mere 20 years ago back in 1967. his name was henry puyi he and the history that surrounded him are the subject of bernardo bertolucci's newest movie entitled appropriately the last emperor puya was coronated in 1908 at the age of three revolution effectively ended his reign in 1912 but his life as ruler within the forbidden city walls went on marriage at age 17 provoked his awareness of the outside world yet puyi's ideas of modernization did not agree with the political upheaval going on in china in the 20s and so in 1924 at age 19 the emperor and his family were forced from the imperial palace in an effort to regain the throne puyi sought help and protection from the japanese an error in judgment that guaranteed him imprisonment for war crimes at the end of world war ii he was released as an ordinary citizen of the people's republic of china in 1960. actor john lone plays puyi in the last emperor a role that requires him to range in age from 18 to 62. and good morning good morning congratulations too thank you very much when you were first approached by bernardo berlucci about doing this film what you think and why you well first of all i was just very thrilled to be able to perhaps work with him and to be in china this combination i thought was very exciting and i knew very little about the emperor's biography so bernado was the first one to introduce me to this biography of the story of the emperor and and then um we had a year and a half preparation together before we went to china and shoot it when you get a hold of a role like this one one that is obviously going to require an awful lot of work because the film i should add is about 2 hours and 45 minutes long and you are almost in every frame um what do you do with it where do you start well you start with the obvious the research the written materials and then the script the objective what we're trying to do but all these are circumstantial and it's the given in terms of aging in terms of changing my character from period to period but every row that i do from theater to film is always been most difficult to trying to breathe the character the life into the character and and to be honest and i find that it's accumulative of all these elements to and then you have to put the hearts and the mind into it were you allowed total freedom to define the character uh total freedom is a little difficult to uh to describe but the fact that bernardo does work within the very specific structure but at the same time he like he said making film is like life and sometimes it's full of surprises and changes so there is freedom uh but um so is give and take poi story is is historical but this is not a historical film i mean who who is puyi from your perspective what is he to me puyi is just an ordinary man an innocent and literally got kidnapped by history destiny was chosen for him at the age of three to become the emperor and he wasn't a courageous character he's he he has tendency to be weak and that got cultivated in the process of him in exile in his own country and then the paranoia bills and and then the survivor instinct takes over and somehow he made it and i think that's quite courageous let me show everyone a clip of your work and this this is uh the moment inside the forbidden city when when the emperor is of china is forced to leave the city where he's been a prisoner all his life you're a chinese-american did the locals embrace you as their own or were you as much of an outsider as a man named bertolucci i i think was mutually fascinating of each other because i speak the language very well i grew up in hong kong i'm it's uh even i'm not familiar with the surrounding but i felt possibly were awakened when i was in china because it's all in me so i had a most wonderful time i got a privilege to meet a lot of people otherwise i would not have and i went to their home and um and we speak in chinese of course final question have you considered what the film might do for you for your career
