[Music] titanic had three separate propellers one at the center with four blades and a diameter 17 feet and one of the port and starboard sides each with three blades and a diameter of 23 and a half feet this photograph shows titanic screw shafts these three enormous propellers were attached to these shafts [Music] the object you see on the left is a clocking inboard with fifteen thousand workers coming through the gates at harlan a wolf clocking in boards were used to show which men had come to work daily and to calculate their pay each board had a number assigned to a specific worker the worker would collect the board at the beginning of the day and return it at the end moving just to the right you'll see three blaze these three blades from the thompson graving dock represent the different styles of rivets used to harland a wolf a blade is a piece of steel that is expelled from a sheet of plating when a hole is punched for a rivet they also serve to record the plate thickness to ensure they met builder specifications continuing on to the right you can see two rivets the titanic's hole was built from thousands of one inch thick steel plates secured to its framework by more than three million rivets due to the vast number of rivets and the high cost of skilled hand riveting teams titanic's builders adopted the new faster and more consistent technique of hydraulic riveting the bulky machinery could not be used on all sections of the ship however hard to reach areas particularly in the bow and stern still needed to be riveted by the old hand hammering method the long rivet scene here is from titanic's hull the shorter one is from the bulkhead the bulkhead rivet is embedded in loose site and was used to analyze the steel used for the rivets here we have a harland and wolf brick this brick was once part of the flooring in the harlan and wolf offices and buildings it was made by the annadale brickworks in belfast [Music] [Music] here you can see a fuse plate an electrical outlet and plug this six circuit slate fuse panel represents the electrical capabilities of the time however electrical safety was not fully appreciated in titanic's day as almost every piece of metal on this board was live and carried 100 volts dc exterior and interior elements to an electrical outlet were probably spares held in the ship's stores the electrical plug would have been used in a cabin and here we have a lidozolo and glass fragments lidozolo is a lightweight slurry of sawdust binder that was used as a subflooring for interior rooms the grand staircase reception area was made of lidozolo and then covered with decorative tiles this glass fragment from one of titanic's windows shows the thickness necessary to protect from wave damage the large l-shaped piece you're looking at is a toilet flush handle valve toilets were available to all passenger classes this handle used to flush one of titanic's toilets is large by modern standards because it operated three different valves in the flushing operation large piece on the left is a pulley blocking hook made of iron with the wood sheath this pulley block and hook was used for hoisting equipment and provisions on board as we move just to the right you can see a deck lamp electrical deck lamps such as this one lit titanic's upper decks many were fitted with metal screens to prevent the bright lights from appearing crew members night vision this lamp still retains some of its electrical wires but is displayed inverted the three feet would have been bolted to the ceiling at 7 15 pm on april 14 1912 first officer murdoch ordered titanic's lamp trimmer samuel hemming to close the forward forecastle hatch to prevent glare from the deck lights below interfering with the vision of the lookouts above [Music] [Laughter] [Music] we have pictured here original artifacts recovered from the wreckage swimming pool and bathroom tiles an engine wrench and coat hooks along with two items that were not on the titanic but the deck boards on the olympia and a fire extinguisher these items would have been used on the titanic and here we have luggage tags every piece of luggage going to a titanic state room or cabin was issued a sticker or tag such as these these vintage tags were used to tell the crew which bags went to cargo and which went to the state rooms and therefore wanted shown here are two first class and two second class tags this white star line baggage ticket would have been attached to luggage stored in the cargo hold during the trip this ticket is for a boston crossing of the white star line perhaps left over from an earlier trip it was recovered from the suitcase of edgar andrew a second-class passenger [Music] many of titanic's first-class suites were vented with utterly oval portholes these portholes were an extra-large size and designed to pivot in the middle to catch the sea breezes [Music] [Music] so level 5 am captain smith walks down the port side of the boat deck to the wireless shack inside marconi wireless operators jack phillips and harold bright are busy with a large batch of telegrams after devoting hours of work to a damaged transformer phillips is now trying to catch up on a pile of passenger messages to be transmitted to the shore station in cape race he is exhausted and as bride is preparing to believe him the captain enters and announces we've struck an iceberg and i'm having an inspection done to see what has done to us get ready to send out a call for assistance but don't send it until i tell you moments later he returns send the call for assistance is the order as he hands phillips a slip of paper with the titanic's position on it phillips puts the headphones over his ears and begins tapping out the international signal for distress c q d cq all stations and d distress followed by m g y titanic's call letters the signals radiate into the night like invisible words floating from their fingertips but only a small handful of vessels are in range the german steamer frankfurt responds from hundreds of miles away also heard from her baltic mount temple burma yaparanga olympic and a coonert liner carpathia some of the ships don't seem to understand the urgency of the calls bride suggests send sos it's the new call and this may be your last chance to use it s-o-s so a few ships near enough to respond to their calls phillips and bride become increasingly aware of their desperation of their task as they work they're ever mindful of the devastation that awaits this personal dosage size bottle of bromo shelter was one of many medicines carried by passengers and crew bromo seltzer claimed to cure nervous headache brain fatigue mental exhaustion and alcoholic excesses hangover by the early 19th century a strict etiquette had evolved around the practice of calling or visiting a friend or acquaintance central to this practice was the calling card which could be conveyed by a servant to the master or mistress to the house so they may decide whether or not to receive the caller the card displayed here belonged to howard irwin and is typical of the type carried by gentlemen at the time men's calling cards which were carried in the breast pocket of their jacket were smaller than those used by ladies who carried their cards in visiting card cases that were often made of silver or ivory the wooden portion of these tool handles recovered from howard irwin's trunk have survived though the metal implements are missing since howard irwin worked as a trimmer one who installed and repaired upholstery in carriages and early automobiles it is likely that he traveled with all the tools required of his trade this ornamental grill was used in first class spaces its elaborate pierce design and gilded surface reflects the sensibilities of first class it would have most likely served to ventilate areas between rooms or to ventilate bathrooms to prevent the buildup of steam over 100 postcards were found with howard irwin's belongings some were mailed to him others he collected as souvenirs on his travels around the world one is the village of feyani on the island of bora bora in french polynesia the other postcard is addressed to howard irwin in sydney new south wales australia [Music] this 18 karat gold grand prix paris 1900 hunter case contains a long giant's pocket watch with crystal hands stem and missing crown a hunter case has a spring-hinged circular metal lid or cover that closes over the watch dial and crystal protecting them from damage [Music] this vintage white star line cloisonne pen is original to titanic's time period it would have been available with other souvenir items in the ship's barber shop recovered from inside the purser's bag this is one of two similar keys impressed with the inscription ratner london it is likely that this key opened the pursers safe on board titanic passengers were encouraged to deposit money stocks and jewelry in the purser safe until the end of the crossing passengers would first place their valuables in a special safety envelope and then seal and sign the flaps to prevent tampering in order to provide sumptuous meals the galleys were equipped with a variety of gourmet cookware this large cooking pot and nickel saucepan each had specific uses in food preparation the blue and white enamel wear pot may have been part of galley equipment tobacco spittoons were still an accepted part of life in 1912 and could be found in all three classes on board they become much rarer in the 1920s when public health campaigns drew attention to the habit of spitting tobacco as a means of spreading lung infections this spittoon probably came from one of the smoking rooms [Music] titanic carried hundreds of products in her cargo hold for delivery to the united states several barrel shaped mustard bottles such as this one have been recovered the original content was thin mustard matar defon produced by luis ferrers and company of france the mustard is still in production in a similar packaging this stoneware jug was used to ship some of titanic's provisions for use in the galleys it probably contained a type of cooking oil chamber pots were kept in passenger cabins on board titanic in case of a sudden bout of seasickness and here we have fleur de lis floor tiles in french meaning lily flowers they're designed in an alternating red on white and white on red pattern these linoleum tiles were used in public spaces in second and third class on titanic what you see here is very similar to what we see in restaurants today this galley floor tile fragment is made by jc edwards these ceramic floor tiles from titanic's galleys feature drain grooves and an anti-skid texture to prevent slips in case of spilled foods or liquids [Music] wall-to-wall carpeting was a rarity on board ships at the turn of the century the meager cleaning resources available left carpets damp and odorous and were no match for seawater plumbing accidents and dispelled food and drinks resulting from choppy seeds in order to give a more refined setting to the first class dining saloon this linoleum tile pattern was used to suggest an enormous colorful persian rug what you're looking at here is the edging of a floor tile from a first class smoking room linoleum tiles were used throughout passenger accommodations on titanic because the flooring needed to be highly durable and color fast tiles found in first class tended to have more exotic collars and more elaborate patterns in order to produce his movie titanic james cameron had to accurately recreate numerous ship elements as props this folding deck chair is a prop from the movie the original deck chairs were made of teak wood with cane seating the deck chairs could be rented for one dollar per day from the purser's office located next to the grand staircase on a deck it is believed that only seven original deck chairs are in existence today having been recovered from the ocean surface by rescue ships howard erwin and his friend henry seutel were working their way around the world both were musicians howard played the clarinet and henry played the violin several pieces of sheet music were recovered from a suitcase kiss me honey kiss me is a ted snyder in irving berlin song written in 1910 william henry allen was a birmingham machinist who was immigrating to america recovered from his well-packed suitcase was this pair of knit one purl one wool socks [Music] this bow tie is constructed of irish poplin with warp of silk and a weft of wool the fabric mixture would have made it durable but soft it was recovered in william henry allen's suitcase with a mixture of business and work clothes and accessories howard irwin was well prepared for his musical travels this leather case contained a sheath which held six bamboo clarinet reeds [Music] so one hundred years ago both private banks and the u.s federal government issued paper money banks in various cities printed these promissory notes in proportion to the national debt they underwrote the large number of obscure u.s banks issuing money made many european banks reluctant to accept american paper currency as a result american travelers often carried british pounds shortly after 1912 u.s currency laws changed and the right to print money went to the federal government alone these steamboat playing cards were found among the personal effects of howard a irwin cards like these were most likely used for playing poker while on board many first class gentlemen thought of card games as a pleasant social distraction there were however several card sharks on titanic waiting for an opportunity to challenge a naive gambler captain smith advised his wealthy passengers to use caution when sitting down to gamble and instructed his stewards to break up games in which a known shark was cleaning out his opponent's wallet large-sized silver certificates were printed by the u.s treasury from 1878 until 1928 this 1899 one dollar silver certificate was nicknamed the black eagle for the center image of a bald eagle clutching an american flag in its talons with the capitol building in the background the coins displayed here are from the united kingdom in the united states the majority of coins recovered were found in a leather gladstone bag most likely from the purser's office other examples of coins found include french franks belgian sentiments turkish petrus and a russian ruble titanic's first class ladies place great importance upon looking their best these toiletry items may have helped one of titanic's female passengers prepare for a gala evening some women brought six different ensembles one for each of the shipboard dinners one brush back and the hand mirror are made of a synthetic material that resembled ivory in 1912 pocket watches were the standard timepiece for most people although designed as a pocket watch this is actually a stemwind desk watch with round beveled glass crystal and jeweled swiss movement the delicate design and length of the watch chain with pearls suggest it was used by a lady [Music] in 1901 king c gillette and william nickerson formed the american safety razor company to market their new disposable safety razor design by the time titanic sailed a decade later the gillette safety razor was quickly supplanting the straight razor as the instrument of choice for men's shaving needs looking now at a cosmetic bottle this opaque milk glass bottle may have held a cosmetic cream some of the contents remain inside men's attire in 1912 relied upon buttons and cufflinks to complete their appropriate attire this purple enameled set of gold cufflinks and studs were part of a set of three intended to resemble amethysts emeralds and sapphires the synthetic four hole button and silver best or waistcoat button as well as the copper cufflink show the range of design and materials used on different types of clothing [Music] third class dishware carried the white star lines logo to discourage theft the name titanic never appeared on any of the china on board allowing its use on other white star line ships if necessary the dishware was clean and attractive but very durable this here is the third class dining soup bowl and cup found in the wreckage decorated with traditional blue and white stylized flowers this particular blue delft china pattern was registered in 1871 it has remained so popular that it is still available today the refinement and decoration and quality of this restaurant grade china is attractive but inferior to service used in first class the center of the plate featured the red burgee flag of the white star line it can now only be seen in raking light the squared bowl and glass butter dish would have been used as serving dishes in the second class dining saloon note the etched burgee and ribbon on the butter dish [Music] the copper sugar bowl was used in the third class dining saloon on rms olympic similar ones would have been used on titanic these white star line items are typical of service wear on board titanic most silver plated by elkington and company these vintage objects serving platter creamer dessert bowl and plate serving spoon fork fish knives and spoons were all used on a white starline ship all service wear had an insignia indicating they were property of the white star line the star the flag etc but none of a ship name on them so that common items could be interchangeable between the ships the serving spoon is stamped with em indicating it was used in the engineer's mess several different flatware styles were used in the various eating establishments few silver plated pieces have been recovered and many are in poor condition shown here are a fork and a teaspoon recovered from the wreck site with a simple raised star at the tip of the handle titanic carried over 1500 bottles of wine as part of the ship's provisions anticipating the varied pallets of its passengers champagne still remains in some of the bottles recovered from the wreck site the best champagnes of the period included kliqua 1900 pomeray nature 1900 moet and shandong dry imperial of 1898 and mum's gh extra dry 1900. both candy dish and craft were probably used in first class areas both had the white star line flag etched on the surface although some of titanic's cabins had running water passengers could not drink the ship's tap water instead stewards supply drinking water and crafts the quality of the glass used varied depending upon the class for which it was intended immersion in ocean water for more than 70 years caused much of the decoration on ceramics to deteriorate and fade seen here above is a bullion saucer from olympic while below is another saucer recovered from the wreck site also recovered from wreck site there is a bullion cup with traces of the gold trim and a discolored white star line flag [Music] during this period napkin rings were part of the table setting holding a cloth napkin that could be washed and reused each napkin ring had a number engraved on it which corresponded to a passenger's place at dinner shown here is a vintage napkin ring with the number 38 on it compared with the napkin ring from the wreck site which is lost at silver plating due to corrosion this marble sink splash fragment came from one of titanic's first class suites even on a ship the size of titanic fresh water was a precious commodity and the sink valves are sprung to shut themselves off this gilded chandelier collar came from one of titanic's numerous chandeliers and light fixtures the woods support probably back to wall sconce and shows traces of decorative gold paint titanic's opulent furniture in public rooms cabins and suites were fitted with several grades of beds and ornamentation intended to match the cost of passage for the state rooms this bed frame with painted uprights and small brass decorations would have been used in one of the less expensive first class cabins the furniture feet perhaps from a chair would have been bolted to the floor some of the original wood remains within the brass socket [Music] this is one of many embellishments bolted on the handrails of the first class grand staircase once in place gold leaf was applied to make them stand out against the wrought iron if you look at the previous photo closely you can tell the care they took when replicating the grand staircase garland these are two of the many cut glass prisms used as decoration on chandeliers in first class [Music] [Music] these three plates have a freesia floral pattern in brown and pink but are not stamped with a manufacturer's name 16 pieces of the set were recovered it is possible that they were part of a personal china service or cargo [Music] [Music] oh [Music] titanic's engines and pumps were complex this artifact is the lid from a strainer box used to trap waste and prevent it from choking the pumps this is one of several thermometer backings with various boiling temperatures identified these thermometers were probably used in preparing or monitoring foods as titanic broke apart coal from its huge bunkers descended randomly to the seabed these two lumps of coal were intended to propel titanic across the ocean when titanic left southampton she had a total of six thousand tons on board wow folks do the math there that's 12 million pounds of coal stick around to the end of the video for your opportunity to purchase a piece of history on board as well as on land metal speaking tubes were used to communicate between decks or floors this speaking tube was recovered from the aft decking bridge it was a simple intercom system used to help coordinate tugboat efforts on both sides of the ship while docking [Music] this is one of two main engine telegraphs that once stood on titanic's bridge the night of the iceberg collision as soon as he received a warning from the crow's nest officer murdoch threw these handles to hardest stern to signal the engine room crew to reverse the engines [Music] over the third class and he was 75 our first time [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you're looking at a personal diary and copy book this copy book was recovered from edgar andrews luggage andrew used the book to record his activities and expenses while attending a collegiate school in bournemouth england the book is open to pages where he practiced writing his name and address using different handwriting styles being at school in bournemouth andrew probably had to assign a laundry mark to various items at the top corner of this towel he wrote his name e andrew in inc next to his name is a swastika which in 1910 was considered a good luck symbol [Music] several different types of footwear were recovered in andrew's suitcase the pair shown here is an oxford capped toe style with laces the sole insert is stamped with the name of a shoe store morton's 42 commercial road bournsmouth morton's was located across the street from the london hotel at the junction of commercial road and avenue road in the heart of an upscale shopping district andrew carried with him a small group of postcards from his home in cordoba argentina this postcard shows plaza roca in the city of rio cuarto an agricultural center for the region the plaza was named after president julio argentino rocco before embarking on titanic andrew visited london and purchased a packet of 77 souvenir postcards which were recovered with his belongings this one shows the new london bridge which was opened in 1831 and served as a main thoroughfare for london traffic until the 1970s this version of london bridge was later sold to an american who reconstructed it in lake havasu city arizona in 1971. the current london bridge was opened in 1973 what you see are a few personal items belonging to mennonite missionary annie c funk including a hairpin a personalized handkerchief a fragment of her perfume bottle annie was on her way back home from a missionary journey overseas to pennsylvania when she never reached her earthly destination but perhaps she made it to her heavenly home i can't help but think that annie felt some comfort as she heard the musicians playing on the deck near my god to thee [Music] [Music] this beautiful silver watch was made by waldem and hallmark birmington 1910 it belonged to turkish bath attendant annie catan and was in her pocket the night of the sinking she added engraved on the back rms titanic annie catan annie continued her career on other ships until she married and immigrated to australia here we have three victim recovery photographs the top photo is from the morning of 26 april 1912. it depicts some of the cs mania crew retrieving a deceased titanic victim from the water the center photo is of the coffins and hearses that were prepared for bodies that were recovered by the mackie bennett the lower photo is of loved ones and family of the victims gathering on the grounds of the mayflower curling rink on angrakola street halifax nova scotia canada where the victims were kept for identification here you see a kaiser dictionary as a new immigrant to america pullbam would have found this kaiser brand german to english dictionary invaluable copyrighted 1901 the pages are still legible hairdresser guillaume lothric established the house of laundry in paris during the late 19th century his perfume salon originally catered to the french aristocracy which led to the creation of exclusive perfumes specifically for some of his honored patrons this perfume card was used to advertise his perfume leolion first produced in 1905. today lottery is a thriving business with offices in many cities around the world a number of postcards of different genres were found in pulbum's luggage this is a souvenir postcard of paris showing the garden of toilet king louis gardener lenoter designed the luxurious jardin de atewelli garden atole located on the right bank next to the louvre museum you're looking at dom au chapul pool balm also collected a number of art postcards this one woman with a hat is signed xavier sager xavier sager 1870-1930 illustrated paris life in the first few years of the 1900s creating wonderful images focusing on the decadence and the fun of the era this certificate of discharge was presented the crew members that survived that fateful night it was an official way of notifying crew members that they were discharged from service aboard titanic [Music] cool first class cabins were fitted with prometheus electric heaters to allow extra warming in the cabin if required by individual passengers this provided them with the opportunity to maintain cabins at a preferred temperature over 500 heaters were installed in cabins and public areas all decks on titanic were fitted with a generous number of contoured benches from which to sit and admire the ocean this is the center support which keeps the middle of the bench from sagging the bench of back were made of slats of wood this two-ton piece of titanic represents a tiny fragment of the ship's hole originally from the starboard side the portholes looked into the ship's dishwashing and china storage rooms on d-deck this section of the ship was originally recovered as part of a larger whole section known as the big piece which had fallen away from titanic and lay in the debris field it was later carefully separated from the larger 15 ton big piece in order to ensure the safety of both hall sections [Music] this small piece of hole fragment was once displayed as a touch piece but since it's been sealed off this angled fragment of the still hall was recovered in 1996. note how one side of the fragment has been bent and as i promised earlier in the video here is a piece of titanic history available for purchase it comes with its own certificate of authenticity as it was found in the debris field in the titanic wreckage it's a 55 pound chunk of coal and it's available for purchase in the titanic gift shop if you have half a million you can have your own piece of titanic history as i close this video out i'm just going to show a few items in the titanic gift shop i also want to encourage you if you're down the orlando area to visit the titanic artifact
