What NOT To Wear On An Airplane!

hey everybody it's jen welcome back to joyful living today i am bringing you a video that i am maybe kind of weirdly passionate about and it is all about what to wear on an airplane and i'm really glad that you're here [Music] a bit of background i was raised as the daughter of a commercial airline pilot and i am now married to a commercial airline pilot so i have lots and lots and lots of decades we won't talk about how many decades lots of decades of flying under my belt and i am very passionate about what i wear on the airplane i just find that certain things are great other things are not so great and depending on the length of the flight and actually if i'm going to be honest even on shorter flights that outfit really can add a lot to my comfort level to certainly how my temperature feels and also to how i feel when i get to my destination so what i have behind me is actually three separate outfits that would be great for travel these are things that i actually would wear have worn um one of these outfits i'm wearing next week for a flight and i'm going to talk about why they're perfect for air travel what i love about each outfit we're also going to talk about shoes and all kinds of stuff so let's dive right in to some don'ts some things that i don't want you to wear on the airplane no matter what i see this almost every time i fly and i typically am in coach sometimes i'm in first class sometimes i'm in comfort plus but i have seen this same mistake regardless of the level of service i'm receiving on that particular flight and that is don't wear short shorts um there's there's a bunch of reasons why uh hygiene is one of them uh to me i don't really want certain parts of my body easily exposed to germs and i'm not going to go any further than that the other thing is temperature airplanes are classically very cold and scott tried to give me some technical explanation as to why they are very cold but i got bored and i'm not exactly sure what he said but there's there's a reason why but it you really want to be prepared for the cold so don't wear shorts do wear layers and do wear something that where you feel kind of covered and comfortable this first outfit i'm gonna show you we're gonna we're gonna come over here and we're gonna get a little more specific so yeah come on okay come on so this very first outfit is actually what i am going to be wearing on a flight in just a few days and it is a pair of very comfortable jeans you don't want tight jeans certainly but if they have a little bit of stretch to them and they're kind of your go-to's which is what these jeans totally are for me very soft very comfortable another benefit of wearing jeans on the plane is because they do tend to be one of the more bulky things that you will pack so wearing something that's more on the bulky side instead of it taking up space in your luggage as you guys know if you've been watching the channel for a while i am a carry-on only girl so if i can wear bulkier items and they aren't in my suitcase that's always better for me so i've got these little jeans then i've got this blue and white striped top and what's funny is this is the exact same outfit i wore uh to disney a week ago and that i'm wearing to california in a week so clearly i'm very committed to this shirt on the airplane this one is by pink clover almost everything i'm showing you today i got from stitch fix some are from some other places i will link below what i can some of the items are kind of old um one of them's from nordstrom so i'll do the best i can with the links but this one has some cute little detail in the back very very soft and it is longer i really really like to have my booty covered you know mid-flight when you need to get up and go to the bathroom if you're walking all the way to the back of the plane i don't really want my butt hanging out as i'm walking past everyone's faces is it just a me thing i don't think it's just a me thing i think it's a thing so really love this top by them and then i'm going to wear another layer now this is kind of a big deal this one is by barefoot dreams it can't i did buy it during the nordstrom sale i'm not sure it's still on sale but i love this cardigan it is just so comforting and for those of you if you're like me and you know flying even as often as i've done it it can feel a bit inhumane so having something that's a comfort item a little blankie if you will is very helpful for me and this sweater fits that bill beautifully now of course i also love it because it has pockets and i think pockets are good but you don't want too many pockets okay you don't want to have pockets that are going to be like a security problem or whatever but having a few pockets especially with masks and hand sanitizer and things like that i find super helpful so this is just again longer so my booty isn't hanging out so soft so comforting and almost like serves as a blanket if you decided you wanted to take a little nap now let's talk about what shoes i would wear with this particular outfit hold on these are kind of my go-to travel shoes these are sapergas it is an italian brand you can buy them online i prefer to order them directly from superga because i find that when you order them from other companies there are a lot of fakes out there so do try to buy them directly from superga but i love these they are very comfortable i like having shoes that are super comfortable to walk in now i live in atlanta so our airport is ginormous so i'm doing a ton of walking before i ever even you know get to my flight i also like to walk the gates if i have a little bit of time i find that since i'm sitting for a long time getting some steps in helps me have a better flight i don't get like restless leg syndrome and all of that so i'm always going to wear shoes that are really comfortable to walk in now i will wear these with socks and that's my other tip especially if you are not tsa pre-check i find it really gross when people are walking through security without their shoes on and in bare feet i just that's just not my scene i don't like it so having socks on is a very big deal to me okay let's move on to this next outfit now this one i might wear if i were traveling say to europe if it was a little bit longer flight and also this outfit is a little bit more dressed up i really like to dress up for the flight but also for my destination now in the case of that outfit i just showed you obviously when i got to florida i did change clothes i changed into shorts but this outfit you know when i travel to some place like new york or europe i'm getting on public transportation right away and i just like something that makes me feel a little bit more put together so um what i've done with this outfit is i've got these black pants now these pants are from jjill i don't know if they still make them they are the best i bought these when i was going to europe a lot and i did like a capsule wardrobe i'll put a link to the video i did on that i think it's still relevant um because i did have an absolute capsule wardrobe for the whole year that i traveled and these black pants were a huge part of that they are stretchy but they have a little bit of like flare at the bottom so they look stylish and super super comfortable so kind of like the same comfort level as leggings but a little upgraded and a little more in in my view a little more age-appropriate and a little bit more dressed up and then i've got with this outfit this little black and white striped market and spruce very lightweight sweater again with the layering now this one again a little bit on the longer side i love the style here um just absolutely love this top because it's it's a it's a knit but it's not a super thick knit so this works as a base layer and this cute little scarf um this is from jjill from a long time ago but it is kind of nice to just have something around your neck so i love this little scarf now the jacket i would wear with this this actually still has the tags on because i had another one of these this is my favorite travel jacket the reason it still has the tags on is my husband washed and dried it by accident and it shrunk so i immediately went went to nordstrom and ordered another one this is not terribly expensive i want to say yeah 69 for this now here's why i love it number one it has very nice style to it i like this little collar here it also has pockets and it's a little longer now this item it has some little detail back here i don't know if that will read on camera but it's it's just a really nice little jacket without being too heavy or bulky and it's really easy to move around in for years i would travel with a like a denim jacket i stopped doing that because i just found it was kind of stiff and especially if i'm in economy as you guys know we're crammed in there so tight that you really want things that are very easy to move around in this is an amazing jacket for travel good price point good quality highly recommend wish my husband hadn't shrunk the first one i bought but i loved it so much i just bought another one now for shoes with this outfit i could go one of two ways if it was spring summer or early fall i would probably go ahead and wear the same supergas however if we are moving into winter months and i want something a little more substantial um these are by clarks these are my little booties they are unbelievably comfortable to walk in they're suede but i actually scotch guarded them and wore them in the rain several times in france and had no problems with them they're just a really good style i love that they have a little zip up here because sometimes especially on a long-haul flight my feet will tend to swell so having the option to kind of unzip these is a very big deal and i just love these little boots um however if i'm going to wear these boots on the plane i'm going to show you what i'm also going to stick into my carry-on bag so hold on okay believe it or not i have a pair of shoes in here now i know a lot of you are teex fans um but i love them for long haul flights because i can slip them on on the flight and just wear these to go to the ladies room or whatever and they literally fold up they are so comfortable i have worn these all over the place they last forever and it's just nice to have a little bit more you know easy to pop on and off shoe so normally what i will do for a long haul flight is the boots will go off and i'll kind of stick those under my seat and i will put on some travel socks and then when i go to go to the restroom i will stick these on my feet because you obviously don't want to go to a restroom on an airplane in socks because gross so i will pack these as well um again because my feet tend to swell a little if i'm in the middle of trying to sleep i certainly don't want to put on bulky shoes so i will stick these into my carry-on and i just love them for that okay now this third outfit is going to be if it is actually winter time um now if you watched my again those travel vlogs from when i was traveling to europe a lot i typically only pack a packable down jacket and i will put a link below to the one that i love i never travel with a big bulky jacket uh you know typically i'm not going to places that are below 20 degrees if you're doing that then obviously that's a little bit different but i'm usually traveling to places that you know yes it might get into the 30s but the packable jacket works beautifully but i do like to layer just a little bit more so these are those same pants from jay jill but this is this little houndstooth pattern i love it again the style is just elevated a little bit and these ones are a little bit thicker um for some reason like it's the same line but these are thicker than the black ones and i love them they're very cozy they're very warm they keep my legs nice and warm on the plane elastic waist again the same comfort level as like leggings but a little more updated style and then this black sweatshirt is by who's this one by lou and gray love this sweatshirt again on the longer side like we talked about um nice style it has a fleece lining super comfortable and this is i might actually throw a t-shirt on underneath this because planes can be freezing cold but they can also get warm but if you're traveling in the winter that's less likely to happen and especially on like an international flight it's going to be cold so i love having a little bit thicker layer in the winter time i love the length on this love the style and again with the theme of things being so incredibly soft how things feel uh you know really any time but especially on a long-haul flight that's a game-changer and then i'm going to wear my burberry scarf i love this scarf love this scarf this was one of those like holy grail pieces for me that i wanted to own forever i didn't want a copy i wanted an original one actually bought it at harrods in london it was a whole thing you can watch my london vlogs they're kind of old now and i'm not i'm much better as a travel vlogger now from a technique standpoint but i do love the one where i got this scarf and then this black jacket i don't even know who this is okay this is by 41 hawthorne and i got this it's still got the little dry cleaning thing on it from last time i had it dry cleaned but i got this from stitch fix a very long time ago so i don't know if it's still available but it's a coat but it's like a sweater so it's kind of just a little bit thicker than a cardigan and it has these great panels very easy to move around in but when you're wearing it it's got this double-breasted detail to it and these amazing pockets this jacket i wore all over europe and i don't even know it's kind of like a cardigan coat like i'm not even sure how it's not really a jacket but the style on this is amazing and it looks very put together again i would wear those little black clarks shoes with it uh you just feel i don't know like like you fit in as soon as your plane lands and i love this outfit i wore this exact outfit multiple times um so yeah it again i you can feel a little bit less than human when you're traveling so if your outfit kind of elevates all of that just a little bit super helpful now obviously if it's a long-haul flight and i'm going to sleep on the plane this is going to come off this is going to come off and i'll just have these two pieces but very comfortable to sleep in like these two pieces as put together as they look on really kind of feel like pajamas when you have them on so you know absolutely love it okay so i went over and grabbed my packable jacket this is from eddie bauer it folds up like this but it actually opens up and i'll show you guys to a full size jacket and i can tell you i have worn this in paris in the winter i have worn this in london in the winter i have worn this in new york in the winter it is surprisingly warm it does have a hood which is nice and this is what it looks like it's longer so it gives you good coverage and it also is a rain jacket so this jacket was such a find for me it goes on all of my trips in the fall and winter months and yeah i absolutely love it and it keeps me from having to pack a really big bulky coat which again if i'm not traveling that somewhere that's going to get below like 35 degrees i really am not going to need and i cannot say enough good things about this jacket now this would go in my carry-on obviously so if it got really cold on the plane i would always have this as a second option but yeah just uh i just love this packable jacket cannot say enough good things when you are trying to determine what it is you want to wear on the airplane i think you really do need to give it some thought in my view you really want to pack for the plane as opposed to packing for the weather when you get to your destination because whether you're traveling to you know florida or california or wherever the plane is going to be freezing no matter what and you're still going to want clothes that give you some coverage that you're very comfortable in and i find that having a good flight really sets the tone for my entire trip so i hope you found this you're traveling especially now when we have so many other challenges that we're facing that make it feel even a little bit less humane than it did before it's good we all need to be complying with
