hi this is brownsville heritage center um i hope that everything will go well on your tina turner's day and i have great wishes for you when i think of nut bush the first thing that comes to mind is the country store because when my father would go to shop i would go along and i would have baby with candy and peanut butter candy bars and a pepsi so i always look forward to that and um the the country stores there were two of them so that is my mental image of nut bush there's a little bit of a story behind me finding out that my school was being honored there's a magazine in switzerland called bilan's and it was written there that tina turner's school is being taken to the heritage center and before that there was a school in actually nutbush that was a white school and i thought they were just putting my name on the white school and then after bilan's i realized that it was actually flagro school which was the grounds that belonged to my great-grandfather and so it's dealing with a memory so immediately then i i became excited and got involved my memories of attending the school there was my teacher her name was as we called her miss o'valley her name was ovally sea crew also the memory of the school i remembered exactly what it looked like and the horror part is there was a schoolmate his name was booby and he threw rocks so booby threw rocks and we had to break in school and he was also a neighbor of ours so after school walking from school we were always dodging rocks all the time from booby and that was a fun memory there was only one teacher in those times in the elementary school and she taught actually four to five subjects which was reading writing and arithmetic my favorite subjects were would have been i think at the time english and of course recess for sport and my least favorite was arithmetic [Laughter] and those times i don't particularly remember classmates i wouldn't remember their names particular particularly but my sister and i were really quite close and in those times uh i would have to say that she was the closest that i that i actually remember the biggest influence in my life was jane pittman she was a black woman that stood against uh segregation in mississippi actually she made the walk to the fountain and had a drink that had nothing to do with my singing career but it showed determination to move forward when all of the odds are against you everyone has a dream i think but i have to say that your dream cannot work without education uh it's essential that you must it goes hand in hand because these days you must communicate with people and if you want to run your business you would need to have education or you have to depend on someone else and that is not always comfortable i think i stand for an example for poor children for their future to to show them that it is possible if you just go straight ahead stay on course you can achieve success with determination of hard times not letting it stop you i hope that as people walk through the school they see that i set an example for a hometown girl that grew up in hard times that made a good life for herself and follow by example i'm very proud that it's there i hope that people will leave taking the importance of education actually now i would like to take time to thank a lot of people that was involved with the nutbush school starting with sonia outlaw clock which is the director of the tennessee delta heritage center also jill and pam stevens they were the the they donated the school actually they were the ones that are part of the ones that brought the truck and also to the former mayor who arranged the heritage center and many others that are listed here as we give credits thank you very much for this honor and i hope that everything goes well you
