in this lesson we're going to talk about toefl reading time management but we're also going to find out why people get questions wrong because of the way that they read this lesson will have seven equally important parts number one we're going to look at the challenge of toefl reading number two i'm going to give you a quick overview of toefl reading number three we're going to look at the three different reading types that you need to do on test day number four we'll find out why people fail toefl reading or run out of time number five we'll look at what makes a fast and accurate toefl reader number six we'll look at the ultimate toefl reading process number seven we'll finish with some critical time management tips cool now we know what we're going to look at and how important this is let's look at number one the toefl reading challenge in your reading test you will get three reading passages 30 questions and you'll have 54 minutes so if you have 30 questions and 54 minutes that means that you need to complete a question every two minutes but that doesn't really tell us much about how many words per minute you need to read according to ets each passage has around 700 words and you get three passages so that means you have about 54 minutes to read 2 100 words plus another say 400 words in the questions so that's 54 minutes to read two and a half thousand words to read two and a half thousand words in 54 minutes means that you need to read at an average speed of 46 words per minute for argument's sake let's just say 50 words per minute words per minute is slow this is not fast reading at all in fact let me put it into perspective for you the average native english speaker reads at an average rate of 250 words per minute by analogy that's the equivalent of driving a car at 100 kilometers per hour so if you only have to read at about 50 words per minute well that's the equivalent of driving at about 20 kilometers per hour so what is the problem here you have enough time to read everything you could read all the passages and all the questions in about 12 minutes so why is it that so many people have trouble with the accuracy and time management in toefl reading there are a few critical things we need to iron out because it's not necessarily how fast you read it's not just about speed or pace it's actually more about how you read and what you do with your mind and your eyes on test day before i show you why people fail toefl reading we need to look a little bit more deeply at the test number two a quick toefl reading overview so you get three passages of about 700 words each and each passage will have 10 questions and the passage will be sort of semi-academic it's not like reading a scientific journal article it's more like reading a magazine article on an academic topic there are 10 different question types you might see on test day you get vocabulary questions sentence simplification questions reference questions factual information questions negative factual information questions inference questions rhetorical purpose questions insert text questions pro summary questions and fill in a table questions now if you need help with any of these different question types which you probably do then you should check out the methods video lessons on e2 test prep you can click the link in the description below these methods lessons will take you through each of the different question types and then you can apply the methods to actual practice questions okay now we know what we're looking at let's take a closer look at how we can improve our reading accuracy and our efficiency and to do that we need to talk about three reading types so reading is not just reading on test day you need to actually use three different types of reading to maximize your scores number one speed reading number two search reading number three careful reading let's understand speed reading so first thing you should do on test day is a speed read through the first passage you should read this at about 500 words per minute that's the equivalent of driving at about 200 kilometers an hour or in other words you should read from top to bottom in about 60 seconds imagine that you are driving through a country town at 200 kilometers per hour don't worry there are no police or pedestrians on the road if you're driving this fast what information can you pick up about the town what can you see when you're driving at 200ks an hour you certainly won't see much you're driving way too fast to read street signs or house numbers but you can get an idea of what's in the town as you drive perhaps you notice a school a cinema a supermarket or even a football field this is speed reading we're not reading for detail we're not even reading for meaning we're glancing our eyes across the text just to get a basic idea of what it's about and hopefully pick up some key words let's do a little bit of practice what i want you to do is just scan your eyes very quickly from top to bottom in a zigzag fashion you're not reading for any details you just want to get an idea of what this paragraph is about and what the whole passage is about let's go first paragraph go second paragraph go third paragraph go fourth paragraph go fifth paragraph go sixth paragraph go final paragraph go cool so this is speed reading again you're not reading for meaning you're not reading for detail in any way you're scanning your eyes across the text in a zigzag type of fashion really to pick out keywords and to possibly get an idea of what the paragraphs and the passage is about okay now i need to talk to you about something important the order of the questions follows the order of the passage the good thing about toefl reading is that it's easy to follow so the paragraphs in the passage are all numbered from 1 2 3 4 etc and the questions will actually tell you in which paragraph you need to read to find the answer and the questions and the paragraphs follow the same order so you should complete the reading test question by question paragraph by paragraph so you've sped read the passage at 200 kilometers per hour you've then turned your attention to question one i'm going to carefully read that but we're going to talk about careful reading in a second before we do that i want to talk to you about search reading search reading is different from speed reading speed reading we just pick out keywords to get a basic idea of what the passage is about when we search read we're looking for something like if you're driving your car and you're looking for a street sign if we go back to our car analogy it's like driving at about 60 kilometers per hour you want to slow down because you are looking for something but not driving too slow because you're not yet worried about details the reason why we search read is because we're trying to find information that was mentioned in the question in the passage in a particular paragraph now it might be the same word mentioned in the question and in the paragraph or it might be a synonym or a paraphrase and i want to talk to you about that so take a look at this table here it shows you the same word a synonym or a paraphrase that could be in the question and the passage for example we have the same word almond milk mentioned both in the question and the passage or a synonym purchase and by or a paraphrase watch out for or be cautious of very rarely will you see the same word used in the question and the passage itself but sometimes it might happen most of the time you'll see a synonym or a paraphrase so for example you'll see the word purchase in the question and maybe you'll see the word by in the passage or you'll see the phrase watch out for in the question and you'll see the phrase be cautious of in the passage this is what we're looking for when we search read so we identify a key word or key phrase in the question and then we turn our attention to the particular paragraph and we're going to search read the paragraph for that particular word or phrase that will probably be a synonym or a paraphrase let's do a little bit of practice some of the questions in tofu will be very straightforward they actually do the search reading for you by highlighting the particular word in the paragraph so you can go straight from the question to the particular area you need without doing any search reading other questions however like this one do require you to search read a paragraph for a particular section to find the right information to answer the question okay so we've talked about speed reading we've talked about search reading now we're going to talk about the most important type of reading you'll do on test day and that is careful reading when you carefully read something you read it word by word phrase by phrase sentence by sentence for a full and maximum understanding of what's being said it's the equivalent of slowing right down in your car to about 20 kilometers per hour to find a house number you really have to slow down and concentrate you might even stop for a little bit is the house number on the letterbox or is it on the door wait was that it no that was number 14 and i'm looking for number four let me reverse my car and take a closer look let's do a little bit of practice on a single question and what i want you to do is slow right down and do some careful reading what i want you to do is go from the question prompt to the particular area of the paragraph then to the answer options i'm going to give you 60 seconds but feel free to pause the video and carefully read as much as you need to okay so read the question then the particular part of the paragraph and then carefully read all of the answer options see if you can eliminate them see if you can find the right answer you have 60 seconds go so how did you go did you get the right answer the answer is d people are largely unaware of how much water is used to grow almond trees the other answer options are incorrect this is an inference question and the inference made is that because people have an alarming realization they were unaware of how much water almond trees consume okay so that's a bit of a tricky question inference questions can be tricky remember to do some practice on e2 test prep okay let's recap our reading process number one you want to speed read the passage at 200 kilometers an hour and you do this once just to pick out key words maybe to get a basic idea of what the paragraphs are about number two you carefully read the question at 20 kilometers per hour number three you'll need to search read for the right section of the text at about 60 kilometers an hour it'll usually be a single sentence in a paragraph number four you'll carefully read the sentence then you will answer the question so that's the process that you need to follow speed read and then you go from steps two to five two to five two to five all the way through the ten questions for that particular passage then you'll do it all again for passage two and passage three wait a minute okay i kind of wish it was that easy i wish you could just speed read read the question read the section of the text check the answer options get the right answer and then move on that is theoretical that's not what really happens in reality what happens in reality is that you're going to go back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and this is where i want to show you a tip that might change the way that you do toefl reading and hopefully really maximize your scores number four why people fail and run out of time in toefl reading take a look at this image here this is from a scientific study that used eye tracking to see how many times an effective reader a good reader looked back and forth from the question to the passage this is from an ielts test but it's a very similar test to toefl both are computer-based english reading tests bear in mind two things this was a good reader and this was a single question and their eyes went back and forth that many times here's a different way to look at it you can see from this heat map that the reader has spent a lot of time looking at the question and then read very widely in the second and third paragraph to find the answer and that was a good reader now let me show you what a bad read a slow reader an ineffective reader does with their eyes on test day yikes this is for a single question their eyes went all over the place up down left right looked back and forth quite literally 406 times they even looked at the timer six times their heat map looked like this and you can see why they got this question wrong they're looking everywhere imagine how much time this is taking this is question two and they're looking in paragraph four they clearly don't understand that the questions and the paragraphs follow the same order and they're spending way too long in the wrong place so on test day please do not move your eyes 465 times all over the testing screen that is not what makes a good reader let's actually look at what actually does make a good reader number five what makes a fast and accurate reader so a good reader reads with minimal back and forth and as such they save time when effective readers read they move through a text from left to right from word to word or phrase to phrase with minimal re-reading if they do move their eyes to re-read a word phrase or sentence it's to re-process the meaning to make sure they have fully understood what was said sometimes an effective reader will stop and they'll focus or fixate on a particular word or phrase to make sure that they've fully understood it but then they'll continue to move through the text from left to right importantly effective readers can memorize where in the text they need to re-read so they can try to find an answer they remember where things were mentioned in the text so let's compare a good fast accurate reader with a slow inaccurate reader good fast readers continue from left to right moving through the text understanding the meaning slow bad readers read up down left right all over the place good fast readers don't often re-read single words or phrases slow bad readers do lots of re-reading of single words or phrases or entire sentences or even paragraphs good fast readers sometimes re-read a section of text slow bad readers do lots of re-reading of whole sections and most importantly good fast readers concentrate and focus on meaning slow bad readers lose focus and do not concentrate on meaning let me now take you through a process i'll walk you through a process so you can approach any passage and any question in toefl and do it accurately and efficiently number six the ultimate toefl reading process number one speed read the passage only do this once zigzag your eyes from top to bottom very quickly to get an idea of what the passage is about and pick up some key words as well number two read the question carefully make sure you understand it fully number three search for the right section in the paragraph a particular sentence or phrase in the paragraph keep in mind that the order of the questions follows the order of the passage number four carefully read the important part of the paragraph it'll be a sentence or a phrase re-read it again and again if necessary number five try to answer the question now more than likely because of your memory just like my memory you need to go back and forth and back and forth but try to do this as little as possible and stay focused on the meaning that is absolutely critical okay before we wrap it up i want to give you some last minute tips on time management number seven critical time management tips so when you prepare for toefl reading and on test day a remember that you have enough time if you don't waste your time b don't move your eyes all over the place relax and let the meaning sink in c if you can't find an answer to a question skip it and come back to it later or at the end don't waste time on answers you can't find or are unsure of d answer every question even if it's a blind guess there are no points lost for incorrect answers e relax i know it's hard but relax and breathe you have plenty of time cool hopefully you found that helpful and hopefully you found the part about people moving their eyes 465 times around the screen helpful as well please don't do that on test day that will result in a loss of time and probably an incorrect answer now that you know how to approach these questions you should do some practice [Music] you
