[Music] whenever you're doing a backsplash one of the things that you want to keep in mind is the pattern and how it relates to where it starts and where it stops whenever you have to more than one wall you have joints where the tile comes together i always start a backsplash by laying the tile out and asking myself what is the most impactful wall where will people see the most things with regard to this area right in here there will be appliances you've got this edge here and this edge here which are nice and you might want to start if you were only doing one wall you might want to figure out how to center that but since we're doing two walls here i took this large wall into consideration and i figured this would be the most visually important wall where i wanted the tiles to start the pack i wanted the pattern to start on one of these two sides and when i looked at this this edge it was a choice seemed to be the most important to me visually so we started this this tile lay which is thirds a whole two-thirds one-third whole two-thirds one-third and that's where the pattern begins and as it comes over here what i did was i took the tiles before i started setting and i kind of laid them out to see all the way across to see where this would end up and i drew lines to see how these tiles would come across here as you can see these tiles this is not a very small tile i didn't want to get it such a small tile that it would be almost impossible to cut or get lost things like that and then as it comes under the cabinet we have a smaller tile but still about an inch and keep in mind while this doesn't look like an inch there's another quarter of an inch behind this tile so this is getting a little small but it's still very manageable to cut and it really wasn't a problem at all the other thing i'm thinking somebody's going to put a coffee maker here a toaster or something like that that's not that important but again if i were setting just this wall with tile i would have probably centered all of these tiles so that on this side and over here would be the same visually the same amount of tile the distances would have matched up on each as we came across here i laid out the tile completely and checked to make sure we had a reasonable amount size amount of tile and as you can see it's almost two-thirds hole one-third it's a little bit it's a little bit smaller but the pattern stays good now there was a happy accident with this as we came across we had the middle line of these tiles or at least one of one of them the intersecting lines hit dead center to the microwave this could be another place where you start your tiles it could be this the center of the tiles could be right here if if that's the visual center point of the focal point of the room and then you can work from there and you can go to the left and right but again if i were doing this whole wall here and not this wall i would have chosen differently i would have had this to where the tile here and over there were equidistant and i would have had a center line and i would have laid them out like that so kind of in closing when you're setting tile plan ahead and lay the tile out to see where it will end and how that pattern will look in each of your intersecting points this is particularly important well it's important in every installation but the place where i pay most attention to this um is is in tub surrounds uh we we always center the tile on the largest wall and then we're looking for that pattern to come out uh and match up nicely where it looks like you have half hope if you're doing a half hole pattern like this the tile makes sense and we'll cut to some pictures to demonstrate uh where where some things weren't laid out quite right and when they got to a point the pattern actually doesn't continue around and you'll notice like right here what i did was i cut this tile to fit here and this tile came here this tile and then this so whatever leftover tile i had from cutting this tile came over here and the pattern just wrapped right around that's all folks you
