throughout the vast and deep history of athletics very few world records ever truly stand the test of time some last for a few years others last for perhaps a decade but then there's the other type of world record that endures for an entire generation on august 7th of 1995 jonathan edwards from great britain accomplished one of the most historic feats in all of track and field in the very first round of the men's triple jump world championships he soared to an unbelievable distance of 18.16 meters making him the first athlete to ever jump over 18 meters this leap was already magnificent however when round two came around he somehow managed to outdo himself with a nearly flawless jump he completely crushed his own world record with a legendary leap of 18.29 meters by this point in the competition only 20 minutes into the world championships the meet was all but over in his first two rounds he had already achieved two marks far beyond what anyone else had ever attained and as you can imagine he easily went on to win the gold medal for these world championships to this day over 25 years later this record still stands as the official world record and it also makes edward still the only human to ever triple jump beyond 60 feet this was clearly a very special moment in world record history but believe it or not this is not the farthest jump in edward's career on june 25th of 1995 just two months before the world championships edwards took part in the 16th installment of the european cup at the time this was only his third competition of the season however in round two he did this [Music] tremendous speed [Music] with an absolutely epic jump he had just jumped a distance of 18.43 meters making this one moment far and away the longest triple jump to ever occur [Music] from his speed down the runway his poise through each jump and of course his perfect landing this truly was a nearly perfect triple jump it was almost as if he was flying during this attempt and when he was later interviewed about this moment he said that it was the single most amazing day of my career it changed everything now it is important to mention that the wind reading was 2.4 meters per second which is just beyond the allowable limit of 2.0 for world record consideration which meant that moving forward this monumental leap of 18.43 could not be considered the official world record for his entire 1995 campaign he went completely undefeated and he managed to jump beyond 18 meters on 13 separate occasions in all of triple jumping history only seven athletes have ever gone beyond the 18 meter mark and yet in 1995 edwards achieved this more than 10 separate times after completely obliterating the record books in 1995 he went on to win the olympic silver medal in 1996 and then four years later he finally managed an olympic gold medal at the sydney olympics in total edwards has won two olympic medals five world championship medals and his world record has now stood strong for more than two decades indeed this man's career has been full of incredible moments however this one jump of 18.43 meters was truly unforgettable thanks for watching everyone and as always until next time [Music]
