[Music] [Applause] [Music] simply unbelievable on february 24th of 2019 a 16 year old athlete from trenton new jersey ran one of the most astonishing races in indoor track and field history at 1 minute 23.57 seconds the teenage phenom a thing mo broke the american record in the 600 meters and even though the announcer stated that she had just broken the world record over this distance this was actually the second fastest time ever achieved falling only 0.13 seconds shy of the world record heading into this competition this high school junior was already running some of the most incredible times in prep running history but despite her previous performances that same season this 600 meter race was far and away the most impressive moment of her high school career fast forward two years later and she was finally set to run in her very first track and field season as a collegiate athlete [Music] given her previous performances in the 400 the 600 and the 800 even before entering college the expectations were extraordinarily high for a thing mo but despite the previous record she had already achieved and the never-ending pressure on this once in a generation talent her 2021 season was still one of the most shocking campaigns in athletics history and standing far above any other moment was one exceptional performance that many of us didn't even realize now before we unveil this pretty mind-blowing performance let's take a closer look at what a thing mo already achieved in 2021 during her indoor campaign she broke a total of three collegiate records and her personal bests during this time were absolutely outstanding throughout this indoor campaign she won every single race except for one but moving into her outdoor season she would go on one of the most legendary winning streaks in track and field history upon reaching the outdoor track and field season mo immediately started crushing any other competitor on april 17th she broke the collegiate record in the 800 meters hitting a time of 157.73 and she did this with a huge negative split [Music] following this record-setting race the insanity of her racing only continued as she proceeded to run well under 50 seconds for the 400 meters on three separate occasions ultimately ending with another collegiate record in 49.57 seconds a time that was fast enough to win the ncaa championships by well over a second by the time her freshman season had ended mo had won three collegiate titles she had broken numerous ncaa records and she had gone completely undefeated during her outdoor racing season and even though she had already raced in 28 separate races this season she somehow took her speed to a completely different level upon reaching the olympic trials after reaching the united states track and field trials a thing mo was considered the pre-race favorite in the 800 meters at this point her season's best was 157.73 but upon reaching the 800 meter finals she completely destroyed the entire field with yet another jaw-dropping time of 156.07 this time actually broke the olympic trials record and now placed her at number two all time in united states history and don't forget she was only 19 years old for this race this olympic trials victory was but a prelude to the dominance that would ensue in the olympic games as once again she took home a magnificent victory in tokyo winning with a new american record time of 155.21 this american record was astonishing but following this performance mo actually managed to break her 800-meter record yet again on august 21st for this year's prefontaine classic mo brought out her fastest race of the season and with brilliant racing unrivaled strength and a very solid finish she hit a time of 155.04 taking down her own american record once again and ending her 2021 racing season with an unbroken record over the two lap distance this was clearly one of the greatest moments for track and field in 2021 however if we go back to august 7th in the olympic games we can see a thing mo drop one of the most legendary performances in track and field history in the olympic finals for the women's 4 by 400 meters we can see the united states run one of their greatest relay races to date with a 4x400 meter team that packed a huge punch of speed this was almost a guaranteed gold if they could successfully carry the baton around the track and over the following four laps this united states team would make history up to this point a thing mo had become one of only nine athletes ever to break 50 seconds in the 400 meters and also two minutes in the 800. with personal best times like these mo was definitely world class in both events but after her olympic gold in the 800 it seemed as though her future was in the 2 lap race not in the 400 but ladies and gentlemen after you watch this one relay race you very well could change your mind on a thing mo over the first three laps sydney mclaughlin allison felix and delilah muhammad all managed to run incredibly well and upon giving the baton to a thing mo she had close to a 15 meter lead at this point in the race she could have run close to 52 or even perhaps 53 seconds and still earned the gold medal for the united states but in one of the greatest moments in four by 400 meter history a thing mo dropped an astonishing split of 48.32 seconds far and away the fastest relay split of these olympic games this 48.32 is not just fast for 2021 because this time would be remarkably quick in any racing season this split is fast enough to be ranked number six all time in the 400 meters but there is a little bit of a catch here because with relay races athletes do get a running start through the beginning stages so in reality this 48.32 is approximately 0.4 to 0.6 seconds slower than her actual abilities but even with this time adjustment this means that mode just ran the 400 meters well under 49 seconds which would incredibly place her as one of only 12 female athletes to ever run under 49 seconds this incredible anchor leg resulted in the fifth fastest 4 by 400 meter relay time in athletics history only falling 1.68 seconds away from the world record and in large part this time was achieved with the historic speed of a thing mo at just 19 she has already achieved some of the most impressive times in track and field history and on top of her speeds she's won multiple ncaa titles she's won an american title and she's also won an olympic gold medal all before the age of 20. with her combination of incredible speed and amazing strength perhaps a thing mo is the one athlete to challenge the world records in both the 400 and the 800 meters and if she can have a similar season like this in the future she will be extremely difficult to beat thanks for watching everyone and as always until next time [Music] you
