(music) Text: This Week at Justice June 30, 2023 Attorney General Garland Issues Statement on Supreme Court’s Ruling in Students for Fair Admissions Inc v. Presidents and Fellows of Harvard College and SSFA and University of North Carolina June 29, 2023 The Supreme Court’s decision undercuts efforts by universities across the country to create a diverse group of graduates prepared to lead in an increasingly diverse nation. It will significantly set back efforts to advance educational opportunity for all Americans. And it upends nearly 50 years of precedent. The Department of Justice remains committed to promoting student diversity in higher education using all available legal tools. In the coming weeks, we will work with the Department of Education to provide resources to colleges and universities on what admissions practices and programs remain lawful following the Court’s decision. -Attorney General Merrick B. Garland Four Arrested for Tractor-Trailer Smuggling Incident that Resulted in 53 Deaths June 27, 2023 Human smugglers prey on migrants’ hope for a better life – but their only priority is profit. Tragically, 53 people who had been loaded into a tractor-trailer in Texas and endured hours of unimaginable cruelty lost their lives because of this heartless scheme. Human smugglers who put people’s lives at risk for profit and break our laws cannot hide for long: We will find you and bring you to justice. -Attorney General Merrick B. Garland One year ago today, an unthinkable crime perpetrated by human smugglers at our southern border caused the death of 53 human beings. But today’s arrests demonstrate that those who seek to profit from desperation will be brought to justice. Working with international partners, the Department of Justice is striking back at international organized crime and sending a clear message that there is no safe haven for trafficking in firearms, deadly narcotics, or human beings. -Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco National Enforcement Action Results in 78 Individuals Charged for $2.5B in Health Care Fraud June 28, 2023 These enforcement actions, including against one of the largest health care fraud schemes ever prosecuted by the Justice Department, represent our intensified efforts to combat fraud and prosecute the individuals who profit from it. The Justice Department will find and bring to justice criminals who seek to defraud Americans and steal from taxpayer-funded programs. -Attorney General Merrick B. Garland Justice Department Launches Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons Regional Outreach Program June 27, 2023 This new program mobilizes the Justice Department’s resources to combat the crisis of Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons, which has shattered the lives of victims, their families, and entire Tribal communities. The Justice Department will continue to accelerate our efforts, in partnership with Tribes, to keep their communities safe and pursue justice for American Indian and Alaska Native families. -Attorney General Merrick B. Garland These new positions represent the Justice Department’s continuing commitment to addressing the MMIP crisis with urgency and all of the tools at our disposal. MMIP prosecutors and coordinators will work with partners across jurisdictions and alongside the Tribal communities who have been most devastated by this epidemic. -Deputy Attorney General Lisa O.
