Text: This Week at Justice
July 7, 2023 Attorney General Garland: No one in this country should
have to live in fear of hate-fueled violence that they will be targeted because of what they
look like or where they are from. The 90 consecutive life sentences announced today guarantee that Patrick Crusius will spend the rest of his life in prison
for his deadly, racist rampage in El Paso. We are grateful to the victims and their family members who
have spent the last three days bravely sharing the devastation and pain they endured
because of Crusius’s horrendous crimes. The Justice Department’s commitment to
combating hate crimes is unwavering. Assistant Attorney General Polite: The Justice Department’s newly appointed
U.S. Special Prosecutor for the Crime of Aggression, Jessica Kim will represent the United States at the centre,
and she will have unfettered access to the substantial body of expertise and resources
that the Department has amassed in response to Russia’s unlawful war
of aggression against the people of Ukraine. Attorney General Garland: Stealing from Gold Star families
whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation is a shameful crime. As alleged in the indictment, the defendant in this case
used his position as an Army financial counselor to defraud Gold Star families, steal their money,
and enrich himself. Predatory conduct that targets the families
of fallen American service members will be met with the full force of the Justice Department. Deputy Attorney General Monaco: In sum, our adversaries
are not content with the status quo they are increasingly creative, brazen, and malicious
in their efforts to weaken democracies to sow discord, and to spread corruption across the globe. Only by defending the rule of law, protecting civil liberties,
and holding fast to the values that underpin our countries can we defeat
these autocratic regimes and we can and must do so by working together. Assistant Attorney General Olsen: The government of Iran,
through its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps remains bent on smuggling weapons of war to militant groups
in violation of U.S. sanctions and international law. As this seizure demonstrates, the Department of Justice
will work in lockstep with our U.S. Government partners to deny the Iranian regime the means to undermine our
nation’s interest and threaten the security of our people. Deputy Attorney General Monaco:
This sentence sends a clear message the Justice Department will be relentless in
bringing to justice those responsible for smuggling illegal firearms and
ammunition across our southern border. We will continue to take aggressive action to combat
the gun violence that endangers law enforcement and devastates communities in both Mexico
and the United States. Announcements of arrests, indictments, criminal complaints, charges
or similar which may be described in this video are merely accusations. Each defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Licensed Music: ”Light Tension” by Daniel Burrows,
