a few weeks back for the first time on this channel i took a professional pottery class learning the expert tips from the best of the best and of course i was a natural and in fact i made some of the most impressive pottery that anyone has ever seen that's not true i it was rubbish i made this now look yeah i bite off more than i can chew as a habit as a person as who i am but that doesn't mean i give up so when i saw the small pottery wheel advertised to me on tick-tock i thought you know well there's bloody chance for redemption so before we experience it for the first time together let's let's see what experience is promised to me here the small wheel look at it oh it's quite small incredibly strong torque that just won't stop look at that little vars oh that's so freaking cute i'm gonna make adorable pottery today i'm so excited oh my god easy cleaning if i need anything i need that remember the mess i made peter was a great host but i don't know if he's forgiven me by the way i appreciate the set my team has prepared for me i think they themed it around my skill level of pottery the small wheel oh my god it's 3d printed little filament bumps and stuff hey i shouldn't i shouldn't smack talk this is basically their prototype it's all about how it works and you know credit to credit to a small business for kicking button making something cool oh this is what i also bought extra tools because i have some sculpting tools so we have these little silicone tools to help shape our clay little sponge so they're the directions clockwise anti-clockwise and then that must be our speed all right let's start by using the wrong type of clay off to a good start yeah this is most people's type of clay this is what most people have available uh peter uh showed me how to how to wedge the clay when we did the cla the clay video a couple weeks back he was really impressed by my technique nice oh there you go it's just not scented okay so step one we got a cone so meaning pull pull it up like this oh this is actually working what look at them coding this actually feels like a tiny version of the big thing that i was bad at so we're pushing down i'm gonna make a bowl i'm gonna start with a bowl we'll start simple a little bit of water so i'm pushing down this is so fun it's working what the hell this is so cool this is adorable and very fun it's funny because the clay is acting like it did when i bit off more than i could chew on the big wheel so i'm sort of trying to shrink it and make a bowl but if there's anything we learned from our pottery class it was two very important words do you remember what those were gareth barbie perfect because of its imperfections [Music] and look at that oh my god i have an adorable little bowl oh it works all right it's time to get to work now that i know that i'm working with professional material it's time to make some professional pots let's do pot i opened up the other video it's worth doing twice all right let's go so as it turns out this teeny tiny pottery wheel is actually deceptively powerful and accurate to using a large full-sized pottery wheel and if that's the case i have to try and just follow all the same techniques just at a fraction of the size starting off by the first task to cone and then dome or flatten at least a couple of times to enable the clay to be more workable and moldable turns out eases have been done not only on a big pottery wheel but also a teeny weeny one [Music] so i got a smaller amount of clay and started a little simpler i coned my teeny mound of clay and then started to mold it into a bowl which immediately fell apart all of this was really telling me this this is very accurate to the large full-size pottery wheel experience just it's small that's it there's no difference except for the size but wait a second i actually started to get a little bit of momentum and of course all of a sudden everything fell apart and that's the tricky thing about using the pottery wheel even if you have something really good happening it can all be ruined in a matter of seconds due to something becoming unscented or of course due to some of the structure becoming unsupported by accidentally thinning it out too quickly but this was it everybody this next one this is the one that you're gonna feel incredibly satisfied watching just wait till you see what it turns into satisfying isn't it especially the part where it all falls apart again oh my god yeah i'm not gonna lie this happened again and again and again it just keeps just i'm not good at this am i but it wasn't all failure i was learning as i was going kinesthetically of course and even though i continued to fail as i attempted as you could see my structures were getting more complex and i was figuring out how to keep it together more often than not and also how to shape it while it was sort of mid shape i don't know if that's a good way of saying it but you're basically constantly evolving the shape and you're trying to work with what you've got to get to what you want to get to i'm basically a scientist [Music] all right i think it's safe to say i'm a master i've got a nice big bowl here uh the lovely little bowl and then my first ever vars so now that i've done my double i think it's time to dive some hero pieces some vases that would be fitting in a museum a very small museum but you know i think it's about time we had a small museum and i think i'm the one to fill it i just talk i just talk so much crap let's make some weird funny little pottery things all right it's business time just because this thing looks like a children's toy and just because i'm a big child and because i'm filming this and basically a children's television set doesn't mean we can't take this artwork seriously as professionals and as artists i've taken every lesson i've learned with every mistake i've made and i am going to attempt four beautiful museum-ready pieces of ceramic starting on the simpler end and working my way up first a plate you might think a plate simple just because it's flat and round and from a spinning thing and with very the most basic shape you could make but no it takes a genius in the hand of an artist to craft something truly magnificent and uh i think you'll agree i did just that on to creation number two and if you thought a plate was epic oh you might wait do you get a hold of this i'm doing a bowl yeah that's right you think you think a plate's good at holding things and and eating off of just have you even heard of cereal you need a bowl for that and uh only the elite could ever enjoy cereal off of something as exquisitely created as this and as you can see this is truly a dive though we're not in dabble territory anymore i've got little details happening as it's being on using my little carving tools to get those sharp edges and really nice indentations and artistic patterns here this is work of art [Music] if you thought it couldn't get any more intense just wait till you see creation number three now to be completely honest i really think my skills have evolved even if it's just exclusively with a tiny pottery wheel i'm a lot more confident and i actually think i'm learning that that is actually one of the elements that makes you better frankly like not hesitating because it's the hesitating and lack of strength and swift movement that creates asymmetry and makes things lose stability but learning that if i want to trim the top because it's wobbly or asymmetric that i can do that just by really briskly and firmly pulling in the wire having that quickly trim off a layer and then i could just smooth that out and really re-stabilize and refine the shape super quick working with confidence gave me more confidence because it was working and as my skills developed i was able to get even more refined with the shape concaving the bottom of the pot going with a nice rigid two-part sort of lean out and then a lean in with a lip at the top and of course some artistic details creation number four is a vaz yup that's right this could hold more cereal than you're even able to eat it's probably more appropriate to hold flowers or in this case a single flower but the tricky part about this is the fact that in going for a taller shape and trying to create a narrower bottom for a really slender and appealing aesthetic the form lends itself to losing stability warping or randomly or very quickly becoming asymmetrical as i'd try and come in and smooth out maybe narrow down the lower sections the top half would start spinning a lot more wildly then when i travel into the top to smooth that out or trim the top off the bottom starts to lose a symmetry and stability it's a constant push and pull of balance while trying to work towards a shape that you find beautiful this was absurdly fun and i have to say way more educational than i expected like i fully think that if i came back to a full-size pottery wheel i'd be able to do so with double the expertise than i did last time simply because miniaturizing the process has really helped me understand where my flaws were in the larger form and it was really fun to just let loose and zone into doing nothing but create simple and organic shapes living on the edge a little bit because i always felt like it might fall apart and it often did but because it's small expectations and waste and challenges were also small all in all i had a lot of fun and i actually learned a lot and they actually ended up looking really cool and i didn't expect all of that [Music] and as a result i actually have four adorable and tiny pieces of ceramic that i really like so let's get them colored starting with a lovely golden and orange sun effect on my plate so that i can feel sunny and warm when i wake up in the morning for a piece of toast [Music] next a lovely mix from green down to blue in a gradient on my bowl for when i eat my greens so i don't feel blue [Music] next we get a little more arty fartsy with a bit more of a copper look on my pot adding a layer of a crackle medium allowing that to dry and putting a blue on top so that i can activate that crackle effect and end up with something that looks a little more artisan-y and aged artisanny is a word i've just invented by the way and uh you can use it i'll give you permission let's make it a thing artisanny and last but not least let's bring it home with the most refined piece of beautiful art we possibly can an homage to mario on my vars my son will love this i can put a little flower in it for him and bring it home and it'll put a smile on his face and look great in a tiny museum here they are all four finished together a delightful result for a playful video i hope you've enjoyed coming for this little romp with me into the world of teeny weeny ceramics [Music] ah yes here we have the exhibit from the renowned artist jazza known for his small
