hi it's katrina from a secret society that may have changed history to strange ancient technology here are nine archaeological mysteries that scientists can't explain number nine the unknown men formed around 226 bc the nine unknown men was an alleged secret society that possessed vast collections of advanced knowledge that was inaccessible to the average person it's even believed that the group used what it knew to gain political power and manipulate society at large for the sake of advancing its own agenda well that is the purpose of a secret society isn't it according to legend the organization was started by emperor ashoka the grandson of chandra gupta the emperor who unified the indian subcontinent after engaging in a brutal war against a neighboring region he swore of violence and vowed to use knowledge for good part of that goal involved collecting and documenting as much knowledge as possible a task that one mad could never accomplish on his own especially an emperor who had other things to do ashoka commissioned nine of india's best thinkers to help him carry out his vision for security reasons he never publicly exposed their identities they gathered all the information they possibly could about science technology and other important topics with each man being tasked to update a certain book containing specific knowledge at the end of his service each man was supposed to pass his book and his mission to learn onto a new member with the group's membership always remaining at nine members the nine unknown men have supposedly persisted into modern times making the organization over 2000 years old the contents of their books remain a mystery in 1923 english writer talbot mundi published a book called the nine unknown men containing what he claims are the titles of the nine books propaganda physiology microbiology alchemy communication gravity cosmogeny light and sociology but not everyone believes that the nine unknown men ever existed in the first place and even if the group was real it may not still be around today plus who knows if mundy's list of the books is correct apparently nobody because the mystery is still considered unsolved number eight disc in the 1930s british egyptologist walter bryan emery unearthed a strange-looking disc on the upper plateau of north sakhara in egypt near dozer's step pyramid he found the alleged prehistoric artifact known as the schist disc or the egyptian trilobe disc in the tomb of prince sabu which dates back to sometime between 3100 and 3000 bc nobody has ever determined exactly what the object is some speculate that it is a wheel and it certainly resembles one but as far as experts know the wheel did not appear in egypt until 1500 bc if the schist disc is in fact a wheel it has the potential to rewrite history others believe that the 5 000 year old artifact which measures roughly 24 inches in diameter is part of an advanced device of some sort that has not been discovered yet a more practical theory suggests that the object is simply decorative in nature or perhaps had religious or ritualistic significance in addition to not knowing what the disc is archaeologists are unsure how it was made schist is a delicate material that is difficult and time consuming for even today's best craftsmen to work with both the item itself and the skills required to produce it seemed to indicate that the ancient egyptians were more technologically advanced than we give them credit for and for now the truth about this artifact remains a mystery number 7. whale fossil graveyard cerro vallena or whale hill is a site in the middle of chile's atacama desert the driest desert in the world it contains dozens of fossilized whale skeletons that were discovered accidentally by a construction crew in 2011. all of the 40 or so skeletons date back between 6 and 9 million years and the collection includes a penguin an extinct sperm oil species an aquatic sloth a strange prehistoric dolphin with a walrus-like tusked face and two seals including a species previously unknown to science most of the creatures are a species of rorqual the same family that includes modern day blue whales fin whales and humpback whales scientists believe there are hundreds more skeletons buried nearby researchers noticed that the fossils were found in four discernible layers indicating that there were four mass strandings that washed the creatures ashore during a time when sea levels were higher and what is now a scorching arid desert was much closer to the coast answering the question of why four mass strandings happened in the same place was a bit trickier scientists ruled out tsunamis which would have killed more species and epidemics which would have been more species specific prehistoric marine mammal expert nick pionson explained in a national geographic interview that the only logical cause for these mass strandings is algae poisoning harmful algal blooms known as red tides release deadly toxins in the water when they receive an unusually high influx of nutrients these toxins can kill whales dolphins turtles and other animals by choking them to death and animals at the top of the food chain like whales are especially prone to algal poisoning by way of their diets adding to this theory is the fact that none of the remains found at cerro bayena bear signs of bite marks or other injuries the bones also contain orange blotches which pines and thinks are algil remains he believes the area was especially prone to red tides due to iron minerals that periodically washed into the water from the andes when it comes to how confident pienson is that he's figured out the mystery in his words it's the closest we get to a smoking gun number six plane of jars located in modern day laos the plane of jars is a seemingly surreal landscape of thousands of megalithic jars scattered along the central plain of a plateau they are arranged in clusters numbering anywhere from one to several hundred they were originally dated back to sometime between 1240 and 660 bc but their true age remains a source of debate among scientists and so does their purpose some experts theorize that they were associated with prehistoric burial purposes while local legends claimed that the jars were used for storing food alcohol rainwater and other things one reason these mysteries remain unsolved is because it is difficult to study the jars which sit among thousands of unexploded bombs left over from the vietnam war consequently less than 10 percent of the jars have been thoroughly investigated in recent years however excavations have started to pick up as researchers identify sites that are safe to explore new findings that were discovered using advanced technology traced some of the jars back to the late second millennium bc the sites contain evidence of various mortuary practices including human skeleton burials as well as bundled and jarred collections of bones which were all dated back between the 9th and 13th centuries a.d in other words the jars predate the human remains potentially by thousands of years researchers do not know why but they theorize that the jars were reused over time and that the sites maintained ritual significance throughout the years previous research has dated other remains to around the same age as the jars themselves serving as possible evidence of their continued use while scholars try to figure this out they are also tasked with determining how the jars which weigh as much as 33 tons each reached their location from the quarry they were sourced from which is located five miles away number five rama's bridge rama's bridge also known as rama setu or adams bridge is a chain of limestone shoals between india's southeastern coast and sri lanka's northwestern coast some geologists believe that when sea levels were lower these formations acted as a land connection between the two countries which are now separated by 18 miles of water but some alternative historians argue that rama's bridge is man-made citing nasa satellite images as proof that at some point humans constructed the land connection and that it exists now as a long broken and mostly submerged bridge according to hindu tradition rama's bridge was built by the deity rama hence its name and sacred status this is mentioned in the hindu epic the ramayana a detailed chronicle of rama's life many researchers have written off the ramayana as just legends and mythical stories since it speaks of gods flying through the air on ships and monsters and giants roaming the earth but others believe that some parts may have an element of truth while most mainstream scholars do not consider rama's bridge to be of supernatural or human origin there are still believers out there and they have no plans to stop pleading their case the debate has even gone to court in india where the country's archaeological survey ultimately found no evidence that rama's bridge is anything but a natural formation number 4. mount nemrot sitting at 7001 feet above sea level in southeastern turkey mount nemrut is home to a series of large limestone statues surrounding what archaeologists believe is a tomb dating back to the 1st century bc one of the highest peaks in the taurus mountains it's where king antiochus the first theos of comagine chose to build a shrine to himself in 49 bc and where he's thought to be buried although his actual tomb has never been found the site contains statues of antiochus himself measuring 26 to 30 feet high as well as statues of his relatives and animals the site also features sculptures of various greek armenian and iranian gods archaeologists don't know how the statues were built without modern technology for reasons that remain a mystery some of their heads were removed from the bodies at some point and scattered throughout the site based on the damage it seems as though they were destroyed as an act of iconoclasm which involves the destruction of icons and monuments for religious or political reasons but the plain and simple truth is that we may never know what went on here or where the remains of the notorious antiochus might be hiding number three the lone cave woman in 2015 archaeologists discovered the skull of a stone age woman deep in a cave in northern italy the skull was 5 600 years old it was situated in a vertical shaft that requires special climbing equipment to access and no other human remains including hers or anyone else's were found nearby begging the question of how and why her skull ended up there researchers pondered over the mystery for several years before finally concluding that natural forces must have moved the skull to the place where they found it in a newly published study they claimed that floods mudslides and sinkholes could have all played a role in relocating it throughout the cave system over time the woman was 24 to 35 years old when she died sometime between 36 30 and 3380 bc during italy's copper age and that she suffered from an endocrine disorder nutritional deficiencies and possibly tumors she also had underdeveloped tooth enamel indicating that her health problems went all the way back to her childhood some of the woman's ailments could perhaps be explained by the shift to an agricultural lifestyle amid the region's rising population at the time which exposed people to more pathogens and parasites livia gershon noted in a smithsonian magazine article the cavities in her teeth suggest that she ate a high carbohydrate diet also pointing toward an agricultural subsistence post-mortem damage to the skull may have resulted from the removal of her flesh a common practice during that era as well as the effects of natural processes number 2 vegetational pompeii nicknamed vegetational pompeii or the pompei of prehistoric plants a collection of fossilized plants preserved in ash known as noegarathialese puzzled scientists for years after their discovery they were found in china in a volcanic ash fall deposit frozen in time but what the heck are they although they were officially classified as a distinct plant during the 1930s scientists struggled to agree on whether they were an evolutionary dead end or if they had a relationship to other plants and if so what that relationship was for decades experts did very little to try tracing the plant's lineage and they more or less just sat there without a proper taxonomic identity a new study by an international team which consisted of members from china the us the uk czech republic and austria examined more recently discovered better preserved specimens and claimed to have solved the mystery noegar at the alleys are highly evolved members of the lineage that came from seed plants these peat-forming plants lived between 325 and 251 million years ago and are more closely related to seed plants than other fern groups this means that they are no longer considered an evolutionary dead end noe giraffialis had modified leaves that developed complex cone-like structures as advanced as they were however they could not withstand the climate and environmental changes that destroyed the world's swamp ecosystems and wiped them out of existence number 1. ancient massacre victims around 6 200 years ago in what is now eastern croatia over 40 men women and children were killed and dumped into a mass grave when their remains were discovered in 2007 archaeologists theorized that the individuals were an extended family who were targeted for execution measuring seven feet across by three feet deep the pit containing the remains was discovered accidentally in the modern day village of potochani archaeologists initially assumed that the skeletons were more recent perhaps belonging to warfare victims who died during world war ii or in the 1990s balkan conflict but no signs of bullet uniforms tooth fillings or any modern evidence was found a new study found that the victims were mostly unrelated ruling out this long-standing theory and leaving experts even more puzzled and with more questions than answers who killed these people and why unfortunately unless more evidence is found near the site researchers may not ever know the answers according to archaeologist mario novak who spoke with national geographic stating i don't think we will ever find out radiocarbon dating determined the victim's true ages and experts concluded that they were from the little studied ancient lasignia culture only one other lasignia burial site has ever been found in croatia and researchers know very little about them other than they were pastoral nomads who migrated seasonally with their cattle and who mined copper for tool making they also now know that the victims ranged in age from 2 to 50 years old and that they died violently by deliberately inflicted wounds but the academic community is no closer to answering the long-standing questions of who killed them or why thanks for watching remember to subscribe if you haven't already for more archaeological videos see you next time bye
