welcome back troglodytes to your daily dose of guitar information the trogley's guitar show today we unbox four guitars but most importantly we learn what happens when you buy something off of ebay so ebay recently has kind of been trying to fight back against reverb i know we've talked about it before in the fact that they kept their three and a half percent fee but i still stand by my theory that people that don't know a lot about guitars usually sell on ebay simply because they just never heard of the musician's market reverb but yeah unfortunately uh this is what ups delivered so i'm just hoping and praying that it ends up okay because essentially they just wrapped our case in really thin cardboard and my handle is now all destroyed so here's hoping for the best because ebay resolution not always the best but then again i have not bought a ton of stuff from ebay recently so maybe they've gotten better but the story behind this one is i think it was uh slightly after a guitar hunting episode i saw this guitar on ebay and it's like okay that actually looks pretty nice it had absolutely terrible photos though so i kind of took a risk i made an offer and i saw that there was at least one other competing offer so it's like yeah i'm probably not going to even win this but hey lo and behold they did accept my offer now does it sound okay it doesn't sound like any detached headstock that would just really put a damper on this whole unboxing episode so let's just go ahead and open it up and hope for the best at least the handle's already been replaced so the fact that it's all beat up that's not that big of a deal oh wow this is actually really nice so i decided to go for this one because i like this large center seam and by center seam i meant the middle piece it's nice and wide and it kind of had that weird strange one area of flame figuring on it and these tobacco burst customs from the mid 70s to the late 70s they're kind of hard to find but i prefer them because that's back in the era where they still did the burst on the back they bursted the sides you've got it on the neck as well as the headstock because i think it's around like 1982 they switch it to just bursting the top and they don't do the backs anymore which those ones they have their own vibe as well but i definitely prefer these because i feel you get a little bit more special attention as far as the finish goes so first issue i'm seeing is the nut has been knocked loose as you can see it's a little bit further over here but that should just slide back into place unless somebody glued it back wrong but thankfully uh no brakes cracks or repairs i mean it's a three-piece maple neck so they usually don't break but kind of a cool top and this is not a tp6 tailpiece this is uh a different variation on it that gibson did not make and sweet looks like we have the original tailpiece in here too it might not look too bad in the gopro footage but it took me a good two hours to clean this guy up after a quick little polish job changing the tailpiece back to original this thing really came to life so i found not only does that centerpiece have that weird flame stripe right there but it also has bird's eye right here especially if you take that pickguard off so this is just such a fascinating 79 les paul custom i'm glad i took the chance on it because this is just beautiful but then again i love these tobacco burst late 70s customs because they are beautiful the frets definitely needed some cleaning there was a bunch of finger gunk on this one it ended up being pretty much all original you've got the original t-tops in it the frets show very little to nowhere it's mainly just the gold hardware that's tarnished a bit but there have been other pickups in here at one point in time but it's all conditioned and ready to go you can check it out on my reverb shop okay let's go ahead and check out this one this is a new gibson guitar here from the original collection not a whole lot of backstory to this one i just happened to find a good deal on it so i was like yeah okay i've already reviewed this model but let's go ahead and check out uh the 2020 gibson quality control because these have changed quite significantly from early 2019 when i did my first reviews of the original collection it looks like our case is about the same but one thing i am worried about is this was shipped during really cold weather like unseasonably cold or i guess seasonably cold but every other day has kind of been warm and this finish is kind of prone to finish checks gold top another 50 standard p90 definitely need to condition this fretboard but i'm really happy with what i see so far you've got some nice streakiness to this one that's gonna look great once i get done with it and now the back reveal that's pretty nice not a whole lot of figuring to it or anything super special but hey take a look at that serial number this is actually fairly new so 2020 275th day of the year that looks a little bit goofy having that double zero but you guys remember in my original reviews for these we kept getting dings under here slightly after that they started to add that black felt washer i'm not sure if you guys can see that right there or not but that prevents that so if you want to take the pick guard off you're still good to go and i am happy to report no finish checking on this one even being shipped in the cold weather the nut actually looks pretty good we've still got some tooling marks around the fret nibs but nothing a little razor blade scraping won't fix two left and two great stories to wrap up so you guys remember how i keep importing japanese guitars and whatnot and sometimes i have help with a friend that happens to live over in japan well this time he needed my help so it's like naturally of course i'll help you man because he won't take any payment from me despite offering him to help me you know get those guitars into the us hopefully one of these days ems japan will open back up for the us just uh you know so i don't have to keep bothering him but this is the guitar that he purchased that he needed me to forward to him over there in japan and this just happens to be a really big and popular model that i've been wanting to do a review on anyways so as long as time allows we should be able to get a review on this model while it's here but then again if it starts taking too long i guess i'll just have to buy my own eventually but if i remember correctly this was a late 2019 model potential early 2020 that is kind of controversial and that's why i want to review it but it's one of the few super popular modern day artists guitars that actually got a reissue anybody who's familiar with this little symbol do daddy thing there already knows what's in here but first thing i'm noticing is just this all white really pop and gibson logo inside here sleeps something to break out of your rusty cage with so this is the chris cornell signature es335 the newer one anyways they also did a different run of these i think it was about back early 2000s something like that the first thing i'm noticing is it's kind of like a matte finish and wow loller pickups in here filtertron style i really like those but this thing still smells like brand new but yet at the same time it looks very old and aged yeah there's our serial number early 2019 they did another 250 of these and this one was number 82. so maybe we'll check this one out in a couple of weeks and our last story i purchased this on a live guitar hunting episode and i was really excited for it but man dhl what a pain in the butt i can't really blame those guys because it's more so the paperwork didn't get filled out properly for this guitar so it was sitting under dispute for about a week or so because they were trying to charge me a bunch of import duties and taxes and it's like man i already paid what i wanted to pay for this i can't really pay that on top of that because technically i mean i keep telling you guys this if you're bringing something back to the us that was made in the u.s you shouldn't have to do that but they'll still try charging you every single time anyways so if you didn't actually know that you weren't supposed to pay that you just pay it and then you'd be out another couple 100 bucks but thankfully though i was able to get out without paying too much more just a couple of normal fees that you get with these things so inside here man it's been i think two years since i've had one of these things [Music] oh man it's still purple the modern flying v one of 33 made in the ebony prism so we found this thing in japan thanks to an ebay broker and i contacted them directly and just bought it from them for much cheaper than that but the price on this was really attractive they actually uh sent me an email and said hey there's like a really small impression up here if you get it in the light like somebody left one of those snark clip-on tuners on there it's like yeah i i really don't care i just wanted one of these modern flying v's again because even though there's a whole bunch of things that i wish i could change about these things to make it closer to the original roswell roads at the same time i really think this is a sleeper model it'll take you know 10 15 20 years before these things become ultra cool but i'm still going to stand behind investing in a modern flying v because yeah i really don't see gibson doing this again i think it'd be fun to like modify this one but the second time buying one of these things knowing what to expect that it will be a little bit purple that's kind of cool so i don't think i will re-review this guitar i just bought this for another reason which will be tomorrow's episode it may or may not be in that case over there but enough being ominous let's go ahead and do some boxings here's one that we haven't seen in a while the slash less ball standard this has to be my favorite color of all of the signature slash guitars and it really does not show up on camera very well it always looks really yellow here but it's more like a pale natural color this one just has such a spectacular top to it and it's going to somebody who says that this is his absolute dream guitar and he's really happy that he could finally afford it but unfortunately despite packing this up having it ready to go for him because i knew he was excited he ghosted me on payment so i've marked this thing way down on my reverb shop because it's sitting in a box instead of unpacking it i would rather send it to someone that does want it so definitely check out my shop for that next one to pack up here this did not take very long to sell at all the mysterious 125th anniversary les paul supreme so essentially the story goes for this buyer that he thinks gibson's going to continue to make these and that they just made a bunch of necks back in 2019 but i don't know it appears that whenever one of these does show up in the usa it's not at the big retailers it's at like unknown mom and pop shops you know for a lack of a better term they're usually the smaller stores that got these in stock so i really do not know what's up with these but maybe one day we will be able to tell the full story of these but for right now it just appears to be a very strange model that has not been 100 completed yet this guitar it's the one we ended trade tuesday season three with you know i kind of regret selling it i would love to keep the trade tuesday guitars but at the end of the day you know every day for me is you gotta look at a new guitar make a video on it i never have time to play my favorites and things like that but the interest in studio customs and studio standards it never ceases to amaze me how like the market on these are just exploding i remember when i first ran into these things people were paying maybe 12 up to 16 but now you know it's very easily 2 000 to 2500 bucks some people with like really nice custom color ones are asking like up to four and a half now i don't think they're quite getting four and a half i think a really rare mint condition one with a custom color maybe three and a half these were such cool sleeper models that i think are finally getting the recognition they deserve this took literally minutes to sell and after that i had a whole onslaught of people going i want it i still want it is it available is it available nope i'm sorry we haven't seen this guitar in a long time man i think i reviewed this back in what march maybe slightly after that this is the 60th anniversary 1960 les paul i thought it was a beautiful example i love the fretboard on this one the way that it's all streaky like that and it's got a super wide and active top it doesn't photograph very well but in person it's just such a sight to behold but i like it still smells brand new it's been sitting in its case and a super early serial number that was why i chose this one in the first place one of the first 50 of the 60th anniversary run now this guy he's not staying in the states he's going down to costa rica so he's got a little bit of a journey let's go ahead and pack him up thank you troglodytes for tuning into this boxing unboxing episode i hope you enjoyed getting to see all these cool guitars don't forget to like comment and subscribe and we will see you tomorrow on the next episode take care [Music] you
