[Music] ladies and gentlemen welcome to that's right late Maine Colorado and behind me are three of the most off-road worthy brand-new cars you can buy and we brought them here to a heart Colorado off-road trail to help explain the brand-new TfL off-road index what is the Ori well by the end of this video we're gonna let you know and for all you not off-roaders we're also gonna drag race these three cars but before we do any of that let's meet the cars and the guys we're driving [Music] hey guys first of all I can't believe I left Canada to come down here to more snow but here we are so I brought along the 2019 toyota 4runner TRD pro now the 4runner here is the most off-road worthy toyota you can buy that isn't a pickup truck and toyota really hasn't changed the recipe here in quite a while this is probably the most old-school off-roader of the bunch and i can't wait to see how it does right so it's been 75 years since we won the war and it looks like the good old fashioned Jeep is right back in it this is the brand new 2019 Jeep Wrangler jail and yes it's changed a lot since I'd original Willy's but I still think we can take down the Japanese and the Germans over a hundred and forty thousand dollars I'm driving by far the most expensive car here the brand new g wagon and this is believe it or not the second generation of the G Wagon it has all the off-road goodies what does that mean we go up to trail well I'm wondering if I will run out of courage before the car runs out of capability the TfL off-road index or the TfL o RI is based on a scale of 0 to 100 with 0 being a NASCAR with slicks on its ability to go off-road and 100 being the perfect off-roader so let's kind of break down how we get to those numbers first and foremost we assign 20 points for either having all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive if they be a classic transfer case that's an additional 20 points if it doesn't have a transfer case but it has terrain management then we give it five points all-terrain tires get you ten points if it has nine inches or more of ground clearance and that can either be from the factory or with air suspension that gives you over that amount you get an additional five points diff locks five points for the front five points per Center five points for the rear very similar with armor except that if you have front center and rear armor you only get three points for each of those now let's talk about approach departure and breakover angle if you meet a 25 degree minimum standard then you get once again five five and five for approach break over and departure now finally if you have rear facing cameras then you'll end up with nothing but if you have front facing cameras because we're facing camera they're big you mandate it now you get five points and finally we're allowing one point for subjective opinion in other words what we think of it and that is a total of 100 or the perfect off-roader and to put that in perspective we've figure that a score of 30 or so gets you the ability to go up Goldline hill if you get a score of 50 or more it's basically an over landing ring it's something that's dirt worthy and can be used regularly offroad now if you reach 70 that means that your vehicle is probably Moab ready so you can do things like Hells Revenge these are very serious off-roaders now we're talking about actually Boulder bashing and not just going over fields and streams and such and finally if you get to 99 points you're probably ready to take on the Rubicon Trail and as far as we know there is no vehicle that gets a hundred points or a perfect score that is at least from the factory you probably get there if you lift or at the end bigger tires and wheels but this is only applied to vehicles that are fresh from the factory okay so you said it's the most off-road worthy Toyota car you can buy for sure yeah I think you're forgetting about the rav4 Adventure oh sorry how could I forget about the ground for adventure but I got the bluest car here which makes it easily the most off-road worthy yeah yeah for sure all right guys before we hit the trail let's cut to the studio and find out what the RI score is on the Mercedes and then let's hit up the trail and see how these bad boys do well in the snow that's rock let's go over the Ori score of the mercedes-benz g-class together so first and foremost it gets 20 points for having four-wheel drive it gets 24 points for having a transfer case but this is important right here from the factory it gets all seasons so it doesn't get 10 points for having all-terrain tires now it does have more than 9 inches of ground clearance of 5 points there it does have diff locks in fact front center and rear so a full 15 there it does have armored front and center 6 points approach is good five points departure is good five points but the break over doesn't meet our 25 degree rules so it gets a zero there no front facing cameras and let's get to the most important part which is what I will score it subjectively and I have exactly one point to give out and I'm gonna give it a point five of a point in other words half a point and that's because there are two things that are critically lacking in the g-wagon number one the diff locks unlock when you turn the engine off and that is not good when you're off-roading because you could be in a potential situation where you need all four wheels to have traction and yet when you start up that vehicle you have to pit those buttons again and start moving before they lock and that is a critical issue with it and of course number two which is very frustrating is every time you turn the vehicle on it turns the lane keep on them and so the total score for the g-wagen is seventy six point five on the TfL our eyes scale alright here we go a very difficult especially in the snow Colorado Trail and let's get real guys most people will never take a g-wagen off-road they'll leave it on Sunset Strip where this has become a status symbol for the very rich in a way that has become I think even a surprise for Mercedes because the most status you can get from a vehicle is by having a car in this case a g-wagen that is incredibly off-road worthy and never using it as such I mean how much more status you need than that I can spend a hundred and forty thousand dollars on a car that will never see dirt now for me the problem of course comes in the fact that we don't own this car and you may be thinking to yourself if that means you should drive it like you stole it that's great but we want to review other Mercedes I really don't want to get on the phone with Mercedes and tell them that I did a lot of damage to their very expensive and very cool brand new G Wagon [Music] we've reached our first obstacle it's a pretty big ledge now normally we could probably go around but since we're testing these cars to their limit I'm gonna put the g-wagen in low range lock all three discs and see how it'll do but I'm really afraid that it's not the core capabilities of the g-wagen that they're gonna cause it to not make that the ledge it's those tires now of course you could change tires but we test the vehicles with the tires that come on them to keep it fair because that's what you're buying from the factory so let's give this bad boy a try and hopefully no trail damage alright so I'm gonna put the g-wagen in low range it's simple just push the button and it goes going into low range low range shift to neutral briefly so I wants me to shift to neutral you see my neutral now here's neutral low range okay now let's lock the dips why not here's the center diff there is the rear diff and there is the front diff now this red light means that the dip is locked so so far the center dip is like I have to start moving before it'll lock this second or rear and front dips so you think I'd be enjoying this but I'm not and that's between the problem when you have a car that's this capable and yet this expensive it's just a little terrifying actually because you know that your next stop might be to the Mercedes dealer where it's going to get very expensive very quickly all three discs are locked Oh you're gonna tree next to me guys so while I've got the most under the hood I've got the least on these 19-inch wheels these are scorpion off-road tires I say that with quotes there 275 55 our 19's and they're what many of the European manufacturers consider a all-season off-road tire but if you look at the sights if you look at the tread pattern it's at best all season worthy probably not Colorado worthy [Music] [Music] this is nerve-racking cars more capable than I am oh yeah you did it huh just a little tire slip yeah alright there you have it the first obstacle safety negotiated thanks to my three locking differentials so now let's run over the score for the TRD pro so just like the g-wagen 20 points per four-wheel drive 20 points for transfer case unlike the g-wagen I get 10 points for some proper altering tires I get the 5 because I have nine point six inches of ground clearance now diff locks here the TRD pro has a rear diff Locker and then it has a transfer case which is essentially splitting your power 50/50 in the center so it's basically a center diff lock but no front diff lock here on the 4runner now for armored I have a front and a rear skid plate so I'm getting six points there my approach angle of 33 degrees is good enough 26 good enough for five points now break over is interesting Toyota doesn't publish it and we even called them and they basically said we don't have that number so they don't have the number so we don't have the number so break over the question mark and we can't give it points and then when it comes to cameras you only get a rear camera here which brings our subtotal to 81 and then of course I have to add my subjective and I'm kind of split because I do sort of like the 4runner but it's definitely lacking it feels old I'm gonna give it point 4 and I'll tell you why it's mostly in my eyes powertrain that the 4 liter v6 is just feeling really tired really old five-speed automatic what else has a 5-speed these days I mean Toyota just really needs to update this 4runner and I gotta say that 0.3 out of this point 4 is just for voodoo blue alone cuz the color is amazing the other point one is just for what a cool badass old-school off-roader it is so we end up at a total if I knew how to draw an eighth of 81.4 on me Oh RI now it's getting a little more serious so let's go ahead and put this 4runner down into low so we still have a nice little manual handle here I'm already in four high so you go over and all the way up and that locks are into four low now up above me here is a few more things so traction control which is automatically turned off I can lock up my rear diff and I can also turn on Toyota's a track system which is essentially a brake base traction control system which should also help me split power evenly to all the wheels and I gotta tell you guys this is kind of gutless when you're knotted low so now that I got in low range I'm expecting it to be much much better so here we just create well there's some slip come on baby there it is Edo's are nothing more than I expected for sure that's not gonna work yeah I'm amazed out the knit O's man I'm all for spinning okay yeah yep okay actually that's a great idea this is a situation where Carl control could really help us because again it can split power in ways that I just can't so I'm gonna put it on low speed for all control activated and now let's see I'm just gonna lift my foot off the brake and let's see if this toy can do it by itself the wheel and tire package here is unique to the 4runner TRD pro so we get these blacked out wheels and then we get these Nitto Terra grapplers which are a fairly aggressive set of all-terrain tires and they measure in at 265 70 r17 so see if basically took the same line that I took and he's got great articulation as you can see but the problem is he doesn't have blockers so now he's doing it doing it with car control that's actually really impressive so turbo strong control system I'm not touching the gas or the brake right now oh there's another little snag and it certainly doesn't sound good but you know what we're I couldn't find traction there crawl control found the traction so you know what good on you Toyota that's a really good demonstration of why that system can actually be really useful so the g-wagen was able to do that with everything locked basically all four wheels with power didn't slip but Steve was able to do it only after he engaged in track eight track the Toyota version of that but it did it yeah all right your turn Tommy in the Jeep what are you gonna lock both NIF's sure same line see those same line we all took the same line let's hear the g-force let's go for it okay 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4-door Rubicon and of course we're scoring the vehicle we have here so four-wheel drive is 20 points transfer case obviously 20 points all-terrain tires those K of twos are worth 10 I'm well over 9 inches of ground clearance of 5 their diff locks all around front and rear and of course that Center transfer cases listed torque 50/50 so 15 in diff locks armored we have actually middle there's a lot in the middle and toward the rear but because we have the plastic bumper group we actually have this kind of thin crummy front skid plate so only six for armored approach departure break over angles we have five five for approaching departure but because it's the Ford or not the two door that break over doesn't meet to 25 degrees so zero there no front facing camera on our particular tester so nothing there so the subtotal is 86 out of 100 now of course I've got one point of subjective and I'm gonna give it to a here we go point six because yes it's amazing off-road and yes it's pretty good on-road but it's a lot of money for what you get I mean we still don't have LED headlights at 51 grand we don't have lane departure warning so it's a little bit pricey and it's also a little bit big on the trail so point six for a total of eighty six point six it's time to engage low range in the Wrangler so there's four wheel drive high into neutral and then for low good old-fashioned lever now it's time to engage the peace Daisy Stoltz which of course are my front and rear lockers I do that with this toggle switch here up and I'm also gonna disconnect my front sway bar because why not if you have it why not I am the only vehicle that has solid axles here today so let's see how this goes right I'm gonna take the same line that the other guys did just to give it fair I'm all locked up in the rubicon now if you have a long-wheelbase in some limited Wrangler and I can see where Steve put his tires here so I'm gonna try to replicate the same line as best as I can so into the hole and you can really feel that's part disconnect working there [Music] [Music] now [Music] yeah Dyson oh yes silent but deadly I have the biggest and the most aggressive tires of the group today these are two 75 70 are 17 BF Goodrich all-terrain Khao twos they've got a lot of grip they've got a lot of saiping they've got a lot of snow capability which will probably need today I think this is a regular fender dude really really this tree took a victim yeah look it's definitely a Chrysler simple I think that that I like I'll be like this huh that's probably where that ended up what do you say we take it back to the other trail yeah it's always a good idea all right guys next obstacle gets a lot tougher believe it or not so let's keep going I know the answer well I know the answer because it's it's got the Chrysler right so that's got to be a Lisa why do let's get decodes to 9601 oh so it's a - yeah yeah that's a feature first obstacle over with I'm really impressed by this key wagon my only concern my biggest concern is of course damaging it you know that already but the tires I think I'm gonna retire before I run out of ability just not enough grip on these tires it's also very comfortable I'll throw that amazed at just how well this independent front suspension soaks up these bumps of course the g1 from having the solid axles in the last generation look just like Tommy's Jeep it's an independent front suspension and a lot of people don't like that for off-roading but so far I gotta tell you I'm not seeing any detriment to performance okay so we're cruising down the trail now and I gotta say I was a little surprised at that little rock section that these Tara grapplers we're slipping quite a bit more so than it seemed like both together tires here which should not be the case but it was so you know what DeNiro's we gotta wait till we get in the deep snow for a full verdict but so far not the greatest the other thing that's honestly not the greatest with the 4runner is the v6 it's a little gutless it makes its power high up in the rev range so you really have to rev it putting it in low mind you really does solve that issue but when you're not in low you're on a nearing red line just to get the thing to climb up over any obstacle full disclosure guys this is actually our TfL Wrangler a brand new Jo Rubicon we bought this weekend half ago and we're out here on the trails comparing it against the foreigner and the g-wagen today and for jeep people it's often easy to discount the 4runner and crawl control but man that truck is capable and its really capable and its really impressive but this is a little bit more capable and it's a little bit more impressive solid axles more ground clearance bigger tires more aggressive tires this connectible front sway bar it just can kind of do it all and it's really amazing what it can do out here [Music] guys check this out this g-wagen its shekel approved now that's a mountain in Austria where they torture test a Mercedes to make sure that it could handle all kinds of train Tommy what is yours torture tested on yeah well it's trail rated which means it's been down the Rubicon Trail because we're in America and how about you Steve Rubicon shop oh I'm sure this for wonder could take it I just don't need any of those fancy badges to tell the world about it you got this big TRD badge well also the you know it's capitalized Toyota but none of that special stuff maybe it could be Mount Fuji rated full disclosure guys we were hoping to do this video on a summary beautiful Colorado day with dry conditions to actually show you know the ability of the vehicle not the ability to tire the problem of course are you doing this in the snow as it becomes a snow tire test but you know we are playing the card that we were dealt and in Colorado in May you can get snow so it is what it is so under the hood of the Mercedes is the biggest and by far most powerful by turbo four-litre v8 here in fact it's the only v8 here puts out 416 horsepower and 450 pound foot of torque and is made it to a 9 speed automatic transmission that powers all four wheels via not one not two but three locking differentials alright here we go let's see if I run out a grip before I run out of tech feeling like starting to feel a lot of sliding going on but it's finding its route it's doing it now tell you how I'm impressed maybe yeah these tears aren't as bad as I thought they were Oh I am completely stuck [Music] I'm working it oh I'm gonna hit a tree I think you're digging a pretty good sized hole here I think I'm stuck huh um I have no doubt that you AG could do this yeah but Mercedes why'd he put on such terrible tires I was afraid of running out of tire before I ran out of capability yeah exactly I know I know I'm gonna try one more time but I think I'm gonna back up and call it a day huh yeah I think I'm stuck here I'm done guys guys I think I've done well the g-wagen ran out of tires my tires are certainly more aggressive and I'm hoping I can get through the snow although Roman chewed up the trail yeah I know you yeah so let's give it a shot [Music] so here in my Toyota I've also got a four liter just like that Mercedes but I'm down two cylinders this is a four liter v6 that makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque sent through a five-speed automatic yes I'm also kind of down some gears but there is a saving grace this is the cheapest of the group here coming in just around forty-seven thousand dollars now for off-road gear I do get a two-speed transfer case and a rear diff lock get a slip so far feeling pretty good so far feels pretty good alright that was no issue now I'm coming up to the spot where the G got stuck I don't want a momentum bit too much so let's see come on 4runner come on 4runner come on 4runner same spot same spot come on baby claw she's crying well not quite though close now go okay so now once again I'm stuck everything's locked up we're gonna do the same thing we did last time we're gonna try crawl control and we'll see if crawl control can actually pull me out of this in a situation where I am stuck and then we've had to back out so crawl control lowest speed lifting off the brake so not even crawl controls doing it alright I can do that let me just get back on the dry stuff and let's do it beautiful well it did take a hair of momentum but he did it took a little bit little bit of speed I'm gonna try and slow it first just like the other two and then well hopefully that's all I have to do you know I think the Mercedes to have done that with a little bit of momentum I'm sure these guys are thinking that but I gotta tell you I think there's an inverse correlation between how much money you spend on a car and how much pain tolerance you have I mean there's a tree there you know and you're risking a lot a lot yeah yeah okay leave your comments I'm a wuss like I'll take that I'll take that but when you get a hundred and forty thousand dollar g-wagen then come up here do it and we'll publish the video because I'd love to see it cue the easy-breezy classical music not gonna take any different line I'm not gonna take it any faster and yes this public isn't as capable adds the tudo Rubicon who s be honest most of you guys out there are buying from the Ford or that's the one we bought that's the one we're testing today so far no issues okay so this Jail Unlimited Rubicon comes in at fifty one thousand dollars it's got front and rear locking differentials and it also has a smallest engine and the smallest number of cylinders that's a two-liter four-cylinder 270 horsepower 295 pound-feet of torque it does have a turbocharger and it also has an exhaust note tune by Dyson very rare fact there but seriously you got a listen to this engine like what happened it's all locked up okay I'm gonna take this with no momentum just like they did just absolutely creeping along [Music] you'll master that that's real freakin oh there it is there it is enough momentum for you guys alright boy I think come on back dude like I think you did that easier cuz we blazed the trail for you this is percent destroyed it is the word you're looking for what do you say we need the G wagon parked over here yeah it's gonna just look beautiful in the Colorado snow like almost like you know like somebody is doing a photo shoot up here yeah and then we'll keep going yeah we'll keep going hit the receipt power part we need to find something that looks hard for this right yeah so far the regulars didn't look too easy yes true let's go [Music] especially with this snow getting a little slippy slide a out here tonight especially all this light sideways and some of these trees on this trail lots of loose rocks here the snow lack she makes it tricky because it's hard to judge you know yeah a snow-covered tree looks alright Tommy come on you're good [Music] [Music] j-rok [Music] all right so now we're in the slick rock section let's see how these tires on the left some rear-end slip not bad better straight now to get some little picture here section nice yeah no big deal yep [Music] [Music] yes yes dear Depot he almost got stuck all right your turn Tommy [Music] [Music] okay we're almost at the top section now and I'm gonna build up a little more momentum here because this thing keeps them getting stuck in the snow so just champion yes really got out of sorts there nice there we are done with that not bad hey Steve you know the higher we go the more snow we got you have a deeper cat and the rest of this trail is it's all snow so I'm really worried about you getting it stuck going up here but give it a shot you can always back down right exactly we got to give her a try and then if it doesn't go we'll see if the Wrangler can really go further yeah because this part now is completely snow so there's no you know dirt that's all snow yeah all right dry ground to save right go forward let's do it I wanted I fade in the 4runner on this section because we are in the deep stuff the snow has been coming down all day long it's just getting deeper and deeper and it's certainly sucking me in but actually I might be okay I might just be okay and right now I'm not really momentum in it this is just creepy this is just creepy right now which she's good she's good for runner keeps on keeping on [Music] almost to the top in the Wrangler Singh has been unfazed by everything so far and yes his trail may not be you know a 10 out of 10 on difficulty in the dry but when it's wet but it's snowy it certainly gets a little bit more challenging make that a lot more challenging see how the Wrangler does Wow Steve really tore this up bad here take it nice and slow what it's like there's no drama whatsoever anger doesn't even care absolutely doesn't even care all right Stephen well we both made it up to the top of the ironclads here we definitely both made it but not quite in the same way right and as you guys already saw the Ori scores on both of these SUVs is a little bit different and the Wrangler scores higher and the Wrangler made this look easier right so that score I think really did translate out here to the real world yeah and of course I do have better tires but I also have that front locker which definitely helped out here today for sure [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so tell me how did you enjoy your time at the very top of the trail today yeah the top of the trail was great how was your time dad ah yeah so my tolerance for trail damage gave out long before the car did but that's what happens when you have a car that's over 140 thousand dollars but you know what let's cut to the drag strip and see which one of these bad boys rules the day and I think I'll know which one I'm not that excited [Music] boys when it snows in the mountains it rains on the plains but before we do this traditional drag race what do you say we do a little untraditional drag race yeah I've got an idea so before we go fast let's go slow we're gonna put these things in 4x4 low and we're gonna see which one actually has the slowest call ratio yeah and I'm definitely gonna win this I don't know the 4runner is pretty slow always slow okay you guys are compared to the g-wagen you guys are always slow [Music] [Music] [Music] whore low ready I'm ready hey the drive in 3 2 1 [Laughter] and the G is actually slower right now than the Rubicon is now I just upshifted my transmission actually up shifted on me I just manually different shifted back to first I can't believe that in drive this thing actually just up shifted the transmission started to be on Louise see you later Venus oh yes good job Wrangler like it's pretty quick I was about to say no I'm gonna win the regular race but also the traditional race but oh well now in the real world yesterday on the trail the low range here in the 4runner felt pretty formidable but it's obvious based on how bad I'm losing that they have much lower low gearing than I do so okay top tip you ever going to drive in a Wrangler low range I'll start you out in second gear then I had to manually go down in the first well it looks like the order of the finish is for runner last g-wagen second Wrangler number one or in other words the ring lives its lowest we're gonna have the force limiter ball race to e6 cylinder in the first race and then the winner of these two vehicles is going to take on the big old Biturbo v8 and the Mercedes I say that with a smile because I think I know which one's gonna win the other thing that I have which these two don't have is I have permanent all-wheel drive whereas these two guys have to shift into four-wheel drive on a rainy day like this so boys are you ready are you ready all right they're ready let's do the first race okay so drag race now I don't have high hopes but we're gonna try everything we can so we're in four-wheel drive for high because I know I'll get some serious spin if I know oh I got a jump on Tommy oh honey doesn't matter there goes a Wrangler [Music] it's a gun man I got you off the line you got a good lunch boy you took off yeah yeah hot dang well I guess you gotta go see how he do against the Mercedes no runner didn't do so great but that's okay now we're on to the main event g-wagen versus wrangler turbo vistas turbo v8 vs. 4-cylinder let's see what happens I've got it in sport mode which is something I don't think the other two vehicles have and I've got of course the biggest engine here with the most horsepower now the engine hits pretty hard in the first two gears and by third gear kind of Peters out a little bit quickly outpacing God look at that big bowl to go wowser and I got a zero to 60 time a five point nine four five point nine four actually kept up with him not bad I was surprised off the line it looked good but the G had it dude five point nine four Wow zero to sixty holy cow that's incredible for big-ass heavy off-roaders AMG version it's yeah it's just the 550th not the 63 yeah that's awesome my point I'm impressed [Music] okay go for it okay Jeep Wrangler two-liter turbo zero to sixty brake torque it 8.5 - all right everybody time for a zero to sixty run here in the forerunner so now we're just back in two-wheel drive so just rear-wheel we got her in Drive there's nothing else I could do to make it faster here there is no sport mode or anything like that I could shift it myself I guess but I'm just gonna let drive do its thing and yeah let's see what happens so let's preload a little bit and take off come on 4runner and there [Music] I didn't even quite hit 60 before I ran out of balls on this track poor runner take two here we go and go come on baby I'm going it for her booth [Music] alright gentlemen let's sum up our individual vehicles what do you think of the foreigner so in this group the saving grace of the 4runner is that it's the cheapest right you're gonna save money on it that's definitely starting to show its age that five-speed Automatic the v6 is just feeling kind of old kind of heavy so foreigners good but I can't wait for Toyota to redesign it you know the G Wagon is straightforward it does it all but it does it all at a hundred and forty thousand dollars what about the Wrangler well the Wrangler has always been great off-road and now it's new JL it's actually pretty good on road too and the cool thing about this video I think is that the TfL are ice core actually represents what the vehicles can and cannot do so I think from now
