hi guys before we start the video i just want to quickly let you guys know that i have updated my etsy store i now have new bookmarks bookplate stickers that you can write your name on and a cute little art print so if you want to check it out and support the channel the link to my etsy store is in the description now let's get on with the video i want my bookshelves to be a representation of me so that when people come into my room and look at my bookshelves they immediately get a sense of the things that i like that means two things one mostly books on my shelves that have value to me and to as few unread books on there as possible so that means i'm gonna do an unhaul and get rid of a bunch of books okay so officially scripted intro aside um i am filming this intro after i've already done the unhauling because the original intro that i filmed is not accurate anymore because i like changed my ways throughout the process of unhauling um so just so you know that this video is gonna be a journey okay i'm gonna go through some ups and downs all the way from deciding that i want to unhaul some books to eventually getting rid of them and selling them to a secondhand bookstore so this is that part in the story where the character does something and you think it's about the thing that they're doing but actually it's just about the character development that happens to them while they're doing the thing that's this video yes it's an unhaul i'm gonna show you all the books that i'm gonna get rid of and why but it's mostly just my personal character development arc that you see happening in this video so i really hope you're gonna enjoy this let's just get started [Music] so today we're going on a journey to unhaul some books honey you've got a big storm coming it's gonna be germany these are my bookshelves we're just gonna go through them and then i'm gonna take a look at which ones i want to unhaul you know taking you through the process i really hoped that by filming this process i'm gonna be able to be a little more strict knowing my history and probably not gonna be but we'll see also there's definitely gonna be a bookshelf reorganization coming soon after i've unhauled some things but first we must establish the unhauling system that we're gonna use whenever i start unhauling books i ask myself three questions one what is the goal of my bookshelf i want my bookshelf to become a reflection of who i am as a person and the things that i like so that means as little unread books as possible and also my life goal is kind of help me another goal that i have for my bookshelves is to be able to fill up two of these daily bookshelves like completely and i'm definitely not there yet so i don't have a space problem which means the only goal right now for me is to get rid of books that i haven't read or will never finish that means there's no need for me to get rid of books that i have read and instead i want to get rid of books that i have not yet read second question is when to unhaul so based on my answer to the previous question i'm gonna unhaul a book if i haven't read it yet and i don't think i'm gonna read it in the next year and question number three is am i allowing myself to get rid of gifts i um personally i feel very bad about getting rid of books that i got as a gift so i'm not doing that but that's just something you have to determine for yourself so the first one that i immediately see is this little book it's dutch it says the art a tutorial to better art understanding i got this as a gift when i was a board member for my student association so i kind of want to have that memory of oh that this was a gift that i got when i was a board member it says leiden 1983. i love it when you get a secondhand book and there is something written in it i get attached to unimportant items or very very easily it's one of those books where i'm like this sounds really interesting i would love to have better art understanding but there are so many other books that have priority like sometimes you have those books that you really want to read but at the same time you just know there's always going to be another book that you want to read more badly so my thought for this book is please don't get mad at me but i recently watched a video by leora from books with leo and she sometimes uses second-hand books for art journaling and there are some pretty cool pictures in here she uses them in her art journal and i was like i just recently got an art journal i could either keep this and then never read it and it wouldn't you know be used or i could actually use it and have some fun with it um then the next book that i already made it is an essay by jean-paul sartre but look in here there's also a really cool thing it's a letter that i can't read because oh my gosh old people's handwriting i really like continental philosophy and starches philosophy so i thought i'm definitely gonna read that one day but the truth is i will probably not read this again because there are so many other books that will have priority of this book this is one of those books that you keep on your shelf because you hope you will read it one day realistically speaking you know you're not gonna read it then i have um a book that i never actually finished and that is fairest by marissa meyer even though i really like the lunar chronicles then what else do we have oh right public speaking that's what it says like handbook for public speaking which i got because i was like that's cool i want to learn how to do public speaking but the truth of the matter is i never actually looked into it i still really don't like the way it looks inside it's very like well text bookie i have so many books on my shelf that were like books that i enjoyed maybe they were three star reads but i feel like zero attached them to them like sorcery thorns but i don't really want to get rid of them yet because i feel so bad about getting rid of books that i've read so i think i'm just gonna hold on to these kind of books for a little longer so now we move on to my tbr shelf but the first one that i see that i'm probably gonna get rid of is thomas harris's hannibal this was actually a gift it's gonna be the only exception to my rule of not getting rid of gifts but this was gifted for me for my birthday by friend because i love hannibal the tv show so much but someone commented on one of my videos to point out that um this is actually a third book you know how i am with finishing series the chances of me reading the first book and then wanting to continue with the second book and then still wanting to continue with the third book are like they're this i'm just gonna use the konmari method so i'm just gonna take all the books out and then see which ones i want to put back where am i gonna where am i gonna put this over here so you can see them it's a graphic novel that has been on my tbr for such a long time which makes no sense because i could finish this in an afternoon so this one's definitely going back then we have a night film since fall is coming up i feel like a thriller is something that i'm really gonna enjoy at that time then we have what is i think the book that has been on my tbr for the longest and that is all the birds in the sky by charlie jane anders let me tell you the story of this book i got this at my first booktube meetup so i was very sentimental about it later later i realized you know what i got other books at that booktube made up that i did read so i can just have my memory be attached to that so i don't need to be that sentimental about this specific book so it's ready to give it away but then but then i read the fifth season trust me this is related the fifth season won a hugo award the same year that this book was also nominated for that same hue award so it's like well if it was nominated for that award maybe it's actually really good and maybe i would actually really enjoy it because i loved the fifth season so much which won that award so then i was like you know what i'm actually gonna read it but right now again i'm just like i've just been really trying to practice this idea instead of asking myself the question do i want to read it asking myself the question is this like one of my top books that i want to read because there are so many books that i want to read so there's always going to be other books that are going to take priority over me reading this one and that's going to cause me to never read it you know what i mean so i think it's time after about five years of having this book on my tbr to just let it go [Applause] and then we have neverwhere which um i started and didn't finish because i actually wasn't enjoying it but i i put so much money into buying this beautiful illustrated edition look at this wow and i know this is one of the swaps favorite books so i still want to finish it someday okay this looks neat this looks very neat i only took down two books i only took down two books oh and i have some other books that i'm gonna unhaul wait let me show you uh about half a year ago i did a book swap here in this room and there were just a few books that were left over that no one wanted and i had to go of bringing them to the charity shop but i just never did so i'm just gonna get rid of them now the fault in our stars some random dutch book that i don't know because it was also from someone else and then for me uh city of ashes so that brings me i had a pile and it just fell over okay oh i completely forgot i just completely looked over this one but i have here the rose and a dagger by renee ajay i really loved the wrath and the dawn but i never got around to reading the second book if i wanted to read this i'd have to reread the referenda dawn and i'm not a really big rereader so i'm gonna add that to the pile as well which brings me to nine books [Music] nine books unhauled next step what am i gonna do with these books i'm gonna go to the charity shop wait i don't even know the charity shop is open right now better look that up oh it's only open on fridays it's sunday today is there anywhere else that i can bring my second-hand books so the thrift store is also closed on sunday i did not think this through i could have known that on sunday these kind of places are closed stupid other places maybe well it seems that pretty much every single handbook store is closed so i guess this video is not gonna go up today i guess we're gonna have to wait until the tuesday to sell them to the second hand bookstore and then the rest i'm gonna try to get to the thrift store i've never done this we're just gonna go through it together [Music] um hello so we're back here i've come to the conclusion that i have a puppy and i should really get rid of more books i've been cleaning up more of my stuff i've been getting rid of some clothes i've been watching way too many minimalism videos i've come to the conclusion that i really do only want to keep books that really have value to me i know that i said at the beginning of this video that i didn't want to get rid of books that i've already read despite what i thought of that and i realized that that way of thinking just wasn't what i really wanted so the reason that i didn't want to get rid of these books first off is because i was afraid that i would forget that i read them you know i wanted to have like the physical memory but the thing is i also get a bunch of my books from the library where i read them on audiobook and there are a ton of books that i really enjoyed that i don't own and i'm surviving that so there's really no need for me to worry about getting rid of books that i feel like lukewarm about and also the second thing like i said at the beginning of this video i had this goal of filling up two shelves of books you know so that's why i didn't want to get rid of any books that i had already read because you know it would help me get to that goal of filling to billy bookshelves with books but the thing is i am in no hurry eventually i will be able to fill up many bookshelves with books that i love i don't need it now so i shouldn't keep books just so that i can have books so i got rid of all of my books no i'm just kidding i just took them all off the shelves in the you know murray condo method where you take the books off you put it back again and then you decide which ones you want to keep instead of deciding which ones you want to put away because that's a better way of like getting rid of things so i'm gonna put my books back and then see if there are a bunch of books in there that are just not holding any failure to me also i've decided i'm gonna allow myself to get rid of gifts and i've got a lot of messages from people who very rightfully pointed out that if someone gives you a book it is then completely in your own right to do with it whatever you want so if i'm getting rid of any of the books that maybe you've given me i'm still very grateful for that book it's just that right now it's not really adding anything to my life anymore so let's get these books back and see if i can get myself to rid of books because i still feel very anxious about it [Music] okay so the first book that i think i'm not gonna put it back is the dark days club by alison goodman i actually really liked her other books the eon duology and i also enjoyed this one but not enough for me to continue the series i don't really hold any specific memories to this so i think i need to just let it go i think i need to just let it go yes it's okay it's okay i still love you i enjoyed you while i read you but i'm never gonna continue this series and someone else is probably gonna be more happy with it okay decision made sometimes you open a book that you haven't opened in like years and you're just immediately transported back to that time when you read the book oh so wonderful i also think i'm gonna let go of the bone season by samantha shannon i really enjoyed this book when i read it i gave it four stars i think but i never continued on with the series and if i would i would probably read the english original language this is a dutch translation you know if i had gotten this from the library and not owned a book it would have been fine as well i just don't really feel any particular attachment to this physical book it feels weird to get rid of a book that i enjoyed more than other books that i'm keeping but it's just that sometimes you have a book that you gave two stars but you do have like a very specific memory attached to it and then i do want to read it and then sometimes you have the three a four star books that you know has served its time on your bookshelf and now it's time to move on another book that i'm going to let it go is glass sword by victoria aveyard i actually really loved red queen so i'm going to keep that one but i was very disappointed by the second book and it caused me to not want to continue on with the series so i really think it's better for me to just keep red queen as like a positive memory and then just pretend this book doesn't exist this book is even signed because i pre-ordered it on time to get a signed copy but it's just not something that i want to hold on to okay here i have a bunch of books that are going to go this is alice by christina henry one of the only horror novels i've ever read i enjoyed it but honestly every time i looked at this on my shelf i kind of knew if i ever don't have space on my shelf anymore that's probably a book that i would get rid of by then so why wait if i could just get rid of it now so i enjoyed this but again no feelings there's just no no joy sparking here and then this one was a bit difficult but i really held on to the port of thorns and roses books for quite a while because they were so popular i don't know why that made me want to keep the books even though they were both like three star rates from i didn't even finish a court of mist and fury there's still a bookmark in there that i'm gonna take out right now but i just kept them because they were so popular as to kind of i don't know to like show people that i did in fact read these books i don't know what my logic was but it was flawed and now i have this really pretty bookmark that i can finally use again in another book the batman stacks by natasha pulley i just really didn't care about i don't know why i felt this need to keep holding on to books that i didn't really care about i want my bookshelf to be full of books that i do care about i should just get rid of them okay it's fine to give these things away the next book that i'm gonna let go of is carefulness this is a really cute book that i got as a gift mindfulness based on cat behavior it was a really cute book i'm still i'm really grateful for the gift but it's just not something i'm ever gonna reread or look into again and yes i am now deciding to get rid of sorcery of thorns anyway and now i realize that not having a specific attachment to the story is a perfectly good reason to let it go the library of the unwritten is another one of those books that i'm very grateful that i got as a gift but i just didn't really love it as much as i thought i did so there's no need for it to stay on my bookshelves you know i kept talking about how i want my bookshelves to be a reflection of what i like and who i am and it's not gonna be that if it's full of books that i didn't really care about so i already now have space again to face the books open with the cover so that's great i think i've now mentioned all the books that i'm getting rid of so these are them it's another nine books i'm pretty proud of myself because that means that now a total if we add to that the books i got rid of yesterday i'm getting rid of 18 books and i know that most people when they do on hauls get rid of like 20 30 books but for me 18 books is quite the achievement especially because i'm so bad at getting rid of books and since i only own 100 books in total that means i got rid of almost a fifth of all of my books and if i say it like that it sounds like way more of an achievement i'm gonna oh wait i missed this one oh 19 books in total i'm gonna go to the second hand bookstore see if they wanna buy some of these from me and then everything that's left i'm gonna bring to the charity shop together with like the other clothes and jewelry that i'm gonna get rid of let's go so [Music] okay after a whole afternoon of biking and walking everywhere i ended up being able to sell 15 of the books to the second hand bookstore and they could give me 25 euros for that which i don't know why that disappointed me it's just that it's not that i wanted to make money of these books like my original plan was to just give them to this big book charity store but it was close so i was like well if i can sell them to the second hand bookstore then i'm gonna it's just that i know that they sell these books for 10 euros in that secondhand bookstore and i understand that that's probably like service costs and stuff costs and bookstore costs but it's just that now i'm like maybe i should have just given them for free to the thrift store so that other people would only have to pay like two euros for my books instead of now it's kind of my fault that people are gonna have to pay like 10 euros in a secondhand bookstore for my books and i also didn't really get much for it i don't know maybe i'm overthinking this it's sometimes i get like i kind of feel guilty that i didn't just bring them to a thrift store i don't know i immediately was like i'm gonna spend the money that i got for the books and i got myself a scented candle it's gonna make my room smell really nice i'm very pale oh my god i'm just proud of myself for getting rid of 19 books and cleaning up and getting over my fear of letting go of books that i didn't really like on the one hand i kind of feel that you know this evening i'm gonna lay in bed and think oh my gosh i should not have gotten rid of these books but probably it'll be fine and then for next time i know that it's okay to let go of materials because it really doesn't add that much to your life i really hope you enjoyed this journey of me trying to unhaul books i'm sure this is the most chaotic unhaul video you've ever watched if you enjoyed it give it a like maybe subscribe if you want to i really hope you enjoyed this video and i will see you soon in another one goodbye
