i invite you to stand my eyes are always on the lord for he rescues my feet from the snare turn to me and have mercy for i am alone and poor in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you um as we begin to celebrate these mysteries today um march 7th is one of my nieces sophia's birthday it's actually on her birthday it's her re-birthdays this is the day that she was baptized a bunch of years ago and um so obviously i'm praying for her i obviously i don't know if you know this we offer up this mask for all of the virtual front few folks but today just and this i just can't remember the the when i baptized her and i reckon that moment when she went from a beloved creature of god into a beloved daughter of god that by her baptism she has been transformed into one of god's children just like you have been transformed into one of these children if you're in rcia on this third sunday of lent is a day where um there's that next step if you haven't been baptized yet that next step even closer to the day to the moment when you are going to be transferred into god's kingdom it bar be made part of his family and be adopted by the father in heaven of course for all of us who have experienced that baptism experienced that adoption experience the father saying you are mine and you're my daughter forever you're my son forever so often um we keep forgetting that we give so often we forget that we have god as our father not only when we turn to sin but also even just when we walk in fear when we walk in uncertainty or when we walk in our own weakness we forget that god has made himself our father and he has made us his children and so at the beginning of this mass we let him remind us of this thing that we will never never ever forget he said god is our father you are his son you are his daughter and because of that we now cry out for his mercy [Music] [Music] [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen let us pray oh god author of every mercy and of all goodness who in fasting prayer and almsgiving have shown us a remedy for sin look graciously on this confession of our lowliness that we who are bowed down by our conscience may always be lifted up by your mercy we ask this through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen invite you to be seated as we hear from god's word a reading from the book of exodus in those days god delivered all these commandments i the lord am your god who brought you out of the land of egypt that place of slavery you shall not have other gods besides me you shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth you shall not bow down before them or worship them for i the lord your god am a jealous god inflicting punishment for their father's wickedness on the children of those who hate me down to the third and fourth generation but bestowing mercy down to the thousands generation on the earth on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments you shall not take the name of the lord your god in vain for the lord will not leave unpunished the one who takes his name in vain remember to keep holy the sabbath day six days you may labor and do all your work but the seventh day is the sabbath of the lord your god no work may be done then either by you or your son or daughter or your male or female slave or your beast or by the alien who lives with you in six days the lord made the heavens and the earth the sea and all that is in them but on the seventh day he rested that is why the lord has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy honor your father and mother that you may have a long life in the land which the lord your god is giving you you shall not kill you shall not commit adultery you shall not steal you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor you shall not covet your neighbor's house you shall not covet your neighbor's wife nor his male or female slave nor his ox or ass nor anything else that belongs to him the word of the lord lord you have the words of everlasting life lord you have the words of everlasting life the law of the lord is perfect refreshing the soul the decree of the lord is trustworthy giving wisdom to the simple lord you have the words of everlasting life the precepts of the lord are right rejoicing the heart the command of the lord is clear enlightening the eye lord you have the words of everlasting life the fear of the lord is pure enduring forever the ordinances of the lord are true all of them just lord you have the words of everlasting life they are more precious than gold than a heap of purest gold sweeter also than syrup or honey from the comb lord you have the words of everlasting life a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters jews demand signs and greek greeks look for wisdom but we proclaim christ crucified a stumbling block to jews and foolishness to gentiles but to those who are called jews and greeks alike christ the power of god and the wisdom of god for the foolishness of god is wiser than human wisdom and the weakness of god is stronger than human strength the word of the lord [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to john chapter 2 verses 13-25 since the passover of the jews was near jesus went up to jerusalem he found in the temple area those who sold oxen sheep and doves as well as the money changers seated there he made a whip out of cords and drove out all of the temple drove them all out of the temple area with the sheep and the oxen and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables and those who sold doves he said take these out of here and stop making my father's house a marketplace his disciples recalled the words of scripture zeal for your house will consume me at this the jews answered and said to him what sign can you show for doing this jesus answered and said to them destroy this temple and in three days i will raise it up the jews have said this temple has been under construction for 46 years and you will raise it up in three days but he was speaking about the temple of his body therefore when he was raised from the dead his disciples remembered that he had said this and they came to believe the scripture and the word that jesus had spoken while he was in jerusalem for the passover many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing but jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all and did not need anyone to testify about human nature he himself understood it well the gospel of the lord [Music] jesus christ so there's this man his name is um dr ricardo castanon he was born in bolivia became a physician he is a an accomplished neuropsychophysiologist which basically means he is an expert in relating the physical and chemical activities of the brain to our behavior so how our brain and how we think and how that all works translates into how we live how we behave um dr castanon was an atheist and he was a scientist and as a result of like just his training he said that basically all the people all the intelligent people most of the intelligent people that he met were atheists and so he just thought yeah that's how life is that's how the world is and in 1999 dr castanon received an invitation after spending his entire life as a pretty staunch atheist in 1999's dr castanon received an invitation to look through a microscope and it changed his life forever which we'll come back to that in a little bit but um before we do i want to bring up a kind of a difficult topic actually it's a difficult topic in minnesota it's kind of a sensitive topic um we have in minnesota we have this thing they're not in all states across the country but they're called whiskey plates and so what whiskey plates are is on your on your on your license if you have a w before all the other numbers that means that the owner of that vehicle has gotten a dwi it actually means that they've gotten at least two dwis within 10 years or they have multiple over the span of any time or it means that even their first time offender if they blew a blood alcohol of 0.16 then they get these these plates that have a w on them and so the idea behind the whole thing is they're kind of controversial obviously but the the idea behind the whole thing is to identify police and to identify the public to the possibility that behind the wheel of this vehicle there could be someone who is willing to drive drunk um obviously it's controversial because um one of the things one of the things it does is it kind of basically freezes a person's bad decision in time and can be really difficult to get out from underneath that also you don't know if this is the person driving or if it's their spouse or it could be their their kid it could be any one of those things and so it's kind of easy in some ways to see the positive like maybe that could help you know clean the streets but also seeing the negative in that sense that it just can be just this brand right this mark of shame it's interesting whenever i see whiskey plays whenever i see the w uh my thought is always that always goes to hmm that could be me always every single time not that i've driven drunk but like but i i look at that and i think i know that i have that in me that i know that i could as much as i hate like really hate the idea i know myself and i know my heart i have a friend who's he's going on like 20 years sober right now and he once told me he said that when he was drinking he said all of his what he would call all of his i will never he said well actually if i was really honest about them we're simply i haven't yet so he has all of his i will never i will never smoke drink and smoke and then we're just like no i haven't yet drunk and smoke or i will never a drink and hook up with a random person and then it was just i haven't yet drank and hooked up with a random person hell his i will never ever get drunk and then drive he even kept a sleeping bag in the back of his car so that when he got drunk he wouldn't he wouldn't drive he won't be tempted to drive but he then realized that even that massive big i will never was simply a i haven't yet and it was when he got to the end of all of his i will nevers and realizes realize that they were just i hadn't i hadn't yet because he'd already done all of his i will nevers that he realized that he had been lying to himself he'd been deceiving himself and he remember his time at aa he said it was the first time he got the chance to be honest and he said to be able to say okay i now know myself i have it in me to do the thing that i hate i have it in me to do the thing that i hate and i think we all have this this capacity all this ability you know um someone the other day had said father mike what did you hear about kim and kanye and this is maybe like a month ago i'm not sure how long ago it was here about kim and kanye i'm like what what about kim and kanye well they're getting divorced and it was one of these situations where they what do you think about that and gosh i don't know i mean it's easy to say well if it's because of him i mean he's kind of like this strange guy or it's kind of her because she's kind of a strange guy maybe it's just them or maybe because of our culture maybe it says you know they're a classic celebrity couple and i would say that i know i don't think so i think the reality is the problem is the heart the problem is all of our heart because i realized i'll get myself and realize the problem is my heart because i don't need to pick on whiskey plates i don't need to pick on celebrity divorces or even non-celebrity divorces to know that i look at them and i see me and i look at them and i see you because i have this thing in my chest that can't be trusted that i have a treacherous heart i remember years ago when um when lance armstrong was was busted for for doping right he had performance enhancing drugs and for years for years i would watch these interviews where he would look at the interviewer who's looking who was saying do you use performance dancing drugs and you would look them straight in the eye and say i never have i never will they're disgusting i hate them i will never participate in this and i would defend lance armstrong like so much like no i saw him in the interview he's more tested than anyone in the world right now and then when he went on oprah and said yeah actually i have done that and i realized again same kind of thing it's not like i need to pick on lance armstrong it's in that i saw i have the same capacity i have the capacity to look someone in the eye and say something that i actually know isn't true i have this thing in my chest that can't be trusted i have a treacherous heart and and i i i think you do too you know in this it's we're doing we we've been doing this series for uh for lent and it's called to the heart and we've said we want to make this lent life-changing what would make this life-changing not just extra penances or extra prayers but trust but what if what if the question wasn't so much can i trust god as much as it is the question can god trust me and that's the question for today not so much can i trust god but the question can god trust me because i look at the gospel today and you know it's john chapter 2 and there's those haunting final lines of john's gospel where it says that many began to believe in his name they began to believe in jesus name and then it says but jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all and did not need anyone to testify about human nature he himself understood it well he would not trust himself to them why because he knew the human heart here's jesus he would not trust his heart to them why because he knew the human heart there's a there's a psychologist his name is uh pierre carlos valdisola he works at claremont mckenna and he's done numerous experiments on the topic of honesty and trustworthiness he reported that time and time again the results have come back to their chagrin to he and his partners chagrin that ninety percent ninety nine zero percent of people most of whom identify themselves as upstanding people they identify themselves as good people ninety percent of people will act dishonestly if they believe if it benefits themselves and if they believe they won't get caught 90 of people will act dishonestly if it benefits themselves if they truly believe they won't get caught in fact i remember a canadian canadian psychologist had pointed to some other studies that indicates that the most powerful determinant of crime is not steeper penalties or harsher punishments but the most powerful deterrent of crime is when people think that they'll get caught and so the verdict for me is i realize this is true about my heart too if i think that i can a get away with it and be i want it badly badly enough then i'll do it or at least even if i don't do it it's an option it's on the table why because i have a treacherous heart i have a heart that ought not to be trusted like i can hear people right now saying wow father mike well i thought you were positive i am positive i am positively convinced that this is all of our hearts i'm down positively convinced that this is your heart too that i i wouldn't i wonder how many of us are actually surprised by this who are praying right now or joining us right now how many of us are actually surprised by this or how many are in denial we're in denial because we have this pet list of things that we would never do we would never ever do that but we have this pet list of things that well these are the things we can get away with these are the things that like sure i'll give myself a free pass on these kind of situations and then we have to just have to go back to the first reading if we go back to the first reading in exodus we have god's ten commandments which are not his ten suggestions my mom had a bumper sticker that said the ten commandments are not suggestions and we recognize that where where do the ten commandments come from they just they're not just rules they come from a relationship they're not just commandments they're part of the covenant and so the recognition is that here is god who says listen i'm going to be your god you're going to be my people and so this is this is our relationship and this is what's going to help our relationship and this is what's going to harm our relationship and this is so about so much about relationship and so little about rules that actually god likens breaking the rule to committing adultery we can look around and say oh my gosh i can't believe that person cheated on their spouse i can't believe that someone would do that kind of situation that kind of thing and yet we recognize that every single one of us has the temptation or the tendency or at least it's an option for us if we want it badly enough to cheat on the lord again which he considers adultery and i have to acknowledge that i am capable of looking someone in the eye and deceiving them i am capable of looking god in the eye and lying to him and the fact is he ought not to trust my treacherous heart again i just wonder if a lot of us are are blind to this because we're so used to it we're just like that's how people are you know that's just that's just how it is or that's just how i am or or or maybe we've even tried to change and we feel i i can't i can't change this and maybe i hate it but i'm afraid because i have that question is is there hope for me if i acknowledge that in my chest there is this thing that can't be trusted that in my chest there's this thing called a treacherous heart is there hope for me i think it's so incredible we're reading we read exodus today that's the first time that god himself gives the law but you know what happens is is that the children children of israel are immediately faith faithless to the law and so moses has the ten commandments he shatters them and goes back to it some more um and then they're they're led out into the wilderness and at the end of 40 years what happens moses has this big speech and the big speech is called deuteronomy so that's the mean second law it's not a whole new set of laws it's basically moses is saying to a whole new group of people here is the law that your forefathers and foremothers had received but they couldn't live up to it and so he gives deuteronomy and the crazy thing about deuteronomy is moses is giving the law again these commandments right but he's saying the whole time the lord god says this is the law this is the commandment this is how i'm calling you to live and then he says i know you're going to fail. this is so so strange but here's god who knows our hearts right he says here's the commandment and i know you're going to fail but i'm still calling you i know you're go here's the commandment and you're being covenant with me relationship with me and i know you're going to deny me i know you're going to cheat on me i know you're going to betray me and when you turn from me you will fall but then when you fall you'll look up and cry out to me and i will come to you see here's here's god who knows our treacherous hearts here's god who knows the ways in which we are so weak and we are so faithless and he's saying but i declare to you that when you are faithless i'm faithful that when your heart is treacherous you can still trust me even when you're not trustworthy he declares i am there's something so powerful about this when it comes to hear it in john's gospel chapter two he would not trust himself to them he would not trust his heart to them because he knew them all and that's the truth is that he knows everything there is to know about you and what does he still do you think about the incarnation god who knows we're faithless and he's like no i'm faithful i'm coming after them god who knows where treacherous and he says no i'm trustworthy i'm coming after them god who knows we're going to fall and he says yes just call out to me and i will be there and he gives himself to us not only in the incarnation he gives himself to us on the crucifix in the crucifixion when he gives everything but also think about the night before jesus died we're going to celebrate the holy thursday in three weeks from now the night before jesus died what does he do to a bunch of people who he knows are not trustworthy to a bunch of people that he knows these apostles he knows one who has betrayed one will deny all will run away except for john he says to them with all of their treacherous hearts he says take this all of you and eat of it this is my body at the last supper when jesus takes bread and wine and transforms that bread and wine into himself to a bunch of faithless and treacherous hearts he gives his own sacred eucharistic heart what does he declare in that moment he declares this the truth he declares that you will be unfaithful but i am faithful that you won't love me back but i'm going to continue to love you even when you fail and even when you when i can't trust that thing in your chest i will give you the thing from my chest this is the truth about the eucharist um we believe that at every mass you know this at every mass that the bread and wine by the power of the holy spirit working through the workings of the priest it actually becomes jesus himself this is the last thing it's a little long-lasting but it's a last thing still it becomes jesus himself it's not a symbol of jesus it actually is jesus and so here's jesus himself who comes to us in our treacherous hearts and he gives us his sacred heart in fact this is crazy um you know over the course of years every mass jesus is truly present right in every mass bread and wine become his body blood soul infinity but in some masses over the course of the last 1500 years there have been some incredible things that have happened a miracle has taken place in 750 a.d there was miracle in lanciano italy where as the priest was offering mass the host became flesh actual flesh and the wine became actual blood you can see it in latino italy italy right now they've been done scientific experiments on the 1970s and 1980s um they've done other places in poland in the 2000s and mexico in the 2000s but also there was a place called buenos aires in argentina in 1996. there was a host that was found in the back of the church someone had dropped it and so the this woman said father here's the host and so he picked up the host and he put it in an in a container of water because what you do if the if the horse is discarded you put it in a container of water and put in the tabernacle lock it up and then what happens is after a number of days so it dissolves it ceases to be the eucharist and then you can pour it into sacred ground you can pour it into the earth after a few days they opened up the tabernacle and they saw that this host appeared to be bleeding and so he reported to his bishop archbishop bergoglio who now is pope francis and the archbishop said okay we'll keep it safe a little longer so for a month it was just in this water and it continued to transform from bread into what looked like blood and flesh and so after a month they put it in distilled water for three years kept it locked up and after three years in 1999 they called a doctor dr ricardo castenon who is a neuropsychophysiologist to lead a team of scientists and physicians to examine what this is at one point dr castenyan put a sample of whatever this was and brought it to new york city to a team of physicians one of these physicians was a guy named dr frederick zugaba who is a well-known cardiologist and forensic pathologist with over 100 professional and scientifically vetted journals publications as well as being a full fellow of the american college of cardiology when he was filmed analyzing the substance he looked through a microscope and he concluded immediately that this was real flesh and real blood containing human dna he said he looked at it for a while studied it and as a forensic pathologist and cardiologist he says this is my this is my i'm an expertise expert in this he says i can tell you exactly what this is he said the flesh is part of the muscle of the heart found on the wall of the left ventricle it's the muscle that gives the heart its beat and the body its life so here's this man who has no idea what this is what he's looking at all i know is he's looking at a sample please identify this they tried not they didn't want to buy us his response and he says i tell you exactly what this is this is a human muscle from a human heart in the left ventricle that pumps out oxygenated blood for the rest of the body he goes on he says i can see infiltrated through this tissue white blood cells and that tells me two things that this heart was alive at the moment this sample was taken because white blood cells die outside of a living organism and secondly he says also these white blood cells they go to address injury and so this heart has suffered this is the sort of thing i see in patients who have been in a car accident have been having a heart attack or been beaten around the chest the the there was a lawyer and there was a journalist there and they said how long can white blood cells live outside of a living or living tissue and he said only for a few minutes and they said well this um this this sample has been in was in tap water for a month and then was in distilled water for three years leading up to this moment and dr zugabel looked and said there is no scientific explanation for that the white blood cells should die within minutes if not hours and it was only then that they told him that the sample actually came from a consecrated host at a catholic mass and he said i have no scientific explanation for this you know dr ricardo castanon he compared this with the other scientific examinations of lanciano italy from 750 a.d from poland from mexico from the other eucharistic miracles around the world and that day he looked through a microscope after having been convinced that his own heart was unlovable after having been convinced that there was no one out there to love his treacherous heart but he looked through a microscope and became convinced that what he was looking at was the heart of jesus is the heart of god himself he is now a practicing catholic who has said so many times if we just realized that any idea of who it is in the eucharist that this is the heart of our god the faithful heart that comes to meet our faithless hearts this this powerful heart that comes to meet our our weak heart this this heart that's been beaten to come meet our broken hearts this eucharistic and trustworthy heart that comes to abide in our treacherous hearts i need you to stand as we profess our faith i believe in one god the father the almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen confident that our father does love us and gives everything for us we now come to him with our needs [Music] that the church may continue to courageously proclaim the gospel message in response to the needs of the world we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer that the bishops pope and the whole church leaders may continue to remind us of the needs of the poor and the ways in which we can serve them we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all those who are preparing for baptism on easter night we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer that in obedience to the command thou shalt not kill all nations will abolish the practice of abortion infant side and euthanasia we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that our virtual front pew family may be faithful maybe a faith-filled community where all are welcome and strive to imitate christ in word and action we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that those who have died may rest in the peace of the messiah we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for the grace this week to allow jesus to entrust his eucharistic heart to our treacherous heart we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we continue to lift up our prayers an increase in religious vocations and holy marriages in our diocese help us to be generous in our response to your call choose from our homes those who are needed for your work and strengthen us with the courage to say yes and to follow you help us as a diocese as a parish as families to encourage and foster vocations to the priesthood permanent diaconate and consecrated life we commend our prayers to our patroness mary queen of the rosary and ask this through jesus christ our lord amen as always as we make this transition from the liturgy of the word to the liturgy of the eucharist hopefully our hearts and minds are drawn to the reality of of who it is that we're offering and to whom we are offering the sacrifice of jesus the sacred heart of jesus the eucharistic heart of jesus i know that as you're as you're participating in this mass you're not able to physically receive the eucharist in the heart of jesus but in a special way i invite you to unite your prayers to that act of spiritual communion that we always make and if possible at all what a gift to be able to get back to mass as soon as possible in person and also to be able to go into the church and just get close to the tabernacle get close to jesus in the monstrance recognizing that just like he does right now he is entrusting his eucharistic heart to our treacherous hearts blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink bring my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father remember the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good good of all his holy church be pleased o lord with these sacrificial offerings and grant that we who beseech pardon for our own sins may take care to forgive our neighbor through christ our lord amen the lord lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ o lord for when he asked the samaritan woman for water for to drink he had already created the gift of faith within her and so ardently did he thirst for her faith that he kindled in her the fire of divine love and so we too give thanks and with your angels we praise your mighty deeds as we acclaim song tools [Music] [Music] shall cease you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and graciously grant that in recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary the mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all your saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own [Music] listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion or merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom he bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and [Music] ever at the savior's
