don't start together has been getting some rather interesting updates I am of course talking about the from Beyond line of updates which include the recent taking roots and the very new Terrors From Below update of which introduce some pretty neat World updates and Concepts and I have some pretty mixed feelings about the new updates and I want to explain my thoughts and opinions on the whole series of updates because boy howdy do I have a ton of things that I want to say let's start with covering the taking Roots update and the things that it introduces the update introduces a new world mechanic in the form of Rifts these become active after both defeating Celestial champion and handing Wagstaff an enlightened Shard doing this will start riff spawning in the world and these will spawn in random locations throughout the world trying to avoid structures walls and transplanted plants as best they can the rift spawns new enemies and items which include the Grazer which is a hostile enemy that will force the player to fall asleep after enough time being around it and it'll then damage a player dealing a total of 50 damage an additional 10 planar damage planar damage is an effect damage that ignores most types of armor with only a couple small exceptions this is not affected by traditional damage modifiers so things like Worley's garlic powder or pepper flakes will not affect these and the Grazer itself cannot be killed and only stunned in a similar way to the centipede in the archives bristles take a while to mine with a normal pickaxe and opulent pickaxe and they're spawned outside of the Rifts using a normal or an opulent pickaxe on these will cause an effect that pushes back the character a bit every so often and the bright shade Smasher and the pickaxe will lower the amount of hits it takes to mine it significantly and will also remove the character being pushed back there are two variations of it with a small and a big one the small ones will yield an at most one but require fewer swings from the pickaxe and the big ones will always give two bright shade just stalls spawn in groups of three and will make their way to any replanted plant in the world infecting it with a deadly bright shade the deadly bright shades are enemies that will deal 100 damage with an additional 130 planar damage without armor But first you have to attack the root to get the bulb itself to open up then you need to attack the bulb for 1000 damage if you attack the bulb without attacking the roots then they will attack back with an AOE damage that knocks you back it will always spawn on replanted Plants usually in groups of three if there are enough plants around and it prefers planting itself on Garden crops the update also adds new items using the resources dropped from both the rift souls and the deadly bright Shades which all include the bright Smithy which is where you craft all of these items the bright shade armor which gives you an 80 damage reduction and -10 static damage from planar as well as an additional 10 planar damage reduction the bright shade Helm has the same effect as the armor except it also works as goggles for Moon storms and sandstorms when the armor and helmet are worn together they do provide a buff to the damage of weapons that deal planar damage they also have an increased defense bonus against planar damage and the bright shade staff weapon will bounce six times as opposed to the usual four the bright shade bomb does 200 AOE planar damage the brightshade staff throws a projectile that deals 10 planar damage to enemies 20 to Shadow creatures and bounces four times between enemies the bright shade sword deals 38 damage and 30 planar damage and it deals more damage to Shadow creatures the bright shade Smasher is a pickaxe and Hammer combo which is pretty nice it deals more damage to Shadow creatures if you choose to use it as a weapon and the bright shade shovel shoe shovel shovel it's a hoe shovel you know probably the least useful of these upon being honest I'm just going to refer to it as a shoevel because it sounds funnier you know but that covers the first wave of the new update line and with the newest one coming out relatively soon currently it's in the beta stage at the time of me recording this called tears below this adds a lot of new content tied to the shadow Rift which is located in the caves and includes similarly to the lunar equivalent a bunch of new game mechanics as well as some new items and features the shadow Rift starts spawning if you choose to give 5 dreadstone to the shadow hand once you defeat fuelweaver these riffs have the same spawning parameters as the lunar ones those being not being near a structure wall or transplanted plant this Rift also spawns new enemies which drop a new item that's used in crafting some of the newer crafts as well as present new threats and dangers starting with the miasma miasma is produced from the shadow Rift and will damage the player for 2 Hp every 2 seconds it'll slow them down as well as cause a filter to appear on the screen to obscure your vision acid rain has a couple of effects it forces wormwood to bloom which is rather interesting it causes nighter to grow in pawns and it costs more durability from protective clothing that isn't the newly added umbrella new Shadow gear also protects from acid rain and this makes bats drop knighter on death it will also deal damage to the player if they're not protected from it the fused shadeling is a basic enemy that spawns from Shadow riffs and it drops pure horror and a shadow might the shadowmite is just an enemy that runs up to you and explodes dealing a bit of damage there's not really much else to say about the shadow mites other than they are another form of attack ink blights are new enemies whose main purpose is to drop tattered robes there are three of these so let's go over each one the first one being a big squid-like monster kind of like guzzlord from Pokemon if you guys know the designs I know grab you and deal damage to you while you're trapped the second one is a two-legged monster which does seem like a weird descriptor of being too legged but it's very apt when it comes to this thing because when you see it you'll get it it rolls around and stops nearby enemies the third one is a flying enemy that just chases you and harasses you similar to a battle disc the two newest items are the void cowl and robe they both give you 80 damage reduction and a static plus 10 planar damage resistance as well as a 10 damage decrease to planar damage if you equip both the cowl and the robe then equipping the shadow Reaper and attacking with it will deal more damage the more you attack with it within a short amount of time the shadow Scythe is a new weapon which yields 55 damage as well as harvest things within an AOE range the umbrella provides full wetness protection as well as full protection from acid rain and will steadily drain your sanity now with all that covered let's go over what I think about it now call me a dragon punch input because boy howdy I'm not gonna sugarcoat it I don't like these updates I think these updates are very close to being good but they just don't reach that point both of these updates currently suffer from the same issue in my opinion which they are more trouble going through than they are worth getting the items of and I think that's not an uncommon sentiment let's start with the first of these two updates the lunar stuff the issue I have with the lunar riffs isn't so much with the items themselves honestly the contrary I think some of the items are pretty handy and neat I like the easy access to a football Helm alternative that doubles as goggles I like the aesthetic of all the new items and enemies and I think everything looks really cool and I think the bright shade Smasher is probably one of my favorite items now if I'm being honest but with all that being said let's go into the downsides and trust me I have a lot to say about this Don't Starve has always been amazing at managing its risk versus its reward you've always been rewarded proportionally for the amount of work effort and skill you show in most every mechanic I've seen for this game the new update is not that though after playing with this new update I've come to the conclusion that enabling the new content while it does open the doors to really a good item for the most part all the items are just things that you can ignore easily the one exception to what I'm about to say in my opinion is the bright shade Smasher the bright shade Smasher is a combination tool that you would actually use in the day-to-day because of when it's useful hammering down structures skeletons any piles in the ruins and Mining rocks stone fruit makes it really good to have this item really does excel in the ruins though because it covers basically everything that you would need in one combination tool but let's move on from my favorite item and go into the other ones the bright shade armor itself is whatever you know it's fine armor but armor is already something that exists and can be gotten way easier than the bright shade options the only thing this armor really provides is planar resistance and a set bonus that is pretty negligible all things considered the main purpose of this armor though is its planar damage resistance but the issue currently with that is why would I bother activating it in the first place when the only thing that deals plane art damage is the things that spawn after activating the events you're basically causing problems for yourself to get the thing to solve your problems so why bother starting the problems to begin with but there's no reason to enable the events if you're trying to get planar damage resistance because the only things that really deal damage is the events themselves then there's the new weapons let's start with the bright shade bombs which I think is really the only things that you can argue or maybe worth using as a weapon because there isn't really anything else that feels AOE damage at such a giant number on demand other than bombs which sure you can use gunpowder but that takes a bit of wind up and execution to do and it's a whole process bright shade bombs however you just throw and you're done the items required to craft it though namely the infused Moon shards are a bit difficult to farm tons of if not just outright tedious to do so now let's get on to the bright shade swords I'll say it the bright shade swords aren't really that worth it because they could just be treated as dark swords and I know I know dark swords are op but like hear me out the bright shade swords only deal as much damage as a Dark Sword to begin with the only exception being against nightmare creatures which by the time you enable the event you already have the celestial Crown so you could just ignore most nightmare creatures altogether it's really easy to deal with them to begin with if not just keeping your sanity up to never deal with them at all in any impactful moment but let's address the big factor that really makes them not great and that's a planar damage because the sword is split between planar and normal damage any damage modifier that you have will be rendered basically useless Wolfgang's double damage for example is gonna be the thing that I frequently refer to because you know it's really simple to calculate damage that's what you think of whenever you think of damage UPS Wolfgang's double damage the bright shade sword is only gonna deal 102 damage because it doubles the initial 38 as opposed to the plus 30 planar the Dark Sword however will deal the full 136 damage with his double damage buff the same thing applies for things like wig Fred pepper flakes and any other damage modifier you might have there's also the factor of the Dark Sword resources being arguably easier to get and definitely easier to farm just because you have the option that is the shadow piece Farm the bright shade staff is also something that is horribly underwhelming not dealing nearly enough damage to justify a fuse the bright side shovel is just kind of bad there aren't many instances in which you were post Celestial Champion where you would find yourself needing both a hoe and a shovel so desperately that you would need to use the new resources on it or start the new content to begin with for that matter but the long and short of this update is it's more trouble than it's worth then moving on from the items there's also the deadly bright Shades themselves these are incredibly annoying to deal with after basically three days with them they're incredibly threatening for what they are and you need to deal with three of them at once most of the time and they deal about 130 damage without armor and even with armor they're still gonna hit you for at least 30 damage without the armor that they provide the fact that they spawn frequently and on your base more often than not makes them incredibly annoying to deal with I think this is probably the biggest issue that everybody has with this update that I've talked to and it's just the bright Shades get so annoying dealing with them like every three or four days it's like three nerfed Hound attacked except significantly worse because they always stay on whatever it is that you're planting if you're Mega basing this makes replanting things basically not an option which is incredibly lame I have seen some people talk about just equipping the armor and the weaponry and killing them that way with the additional planar damage and damage resistance but the issue that I have with that is even then it still takes quite a bit and you have to do it so frequently that it just doesn't outweigh the pros in my opinion like it's so much easier to just disable the event altogether like I I just really don't see any reason why you would want to deal with bright Shades after the initial wave that being said there is a cool stop Gap measure that I cover in a YouTube short if you want to check out that Strat on how to in order to make them not as much of an issue but still something that you kind of have to deal with every so often but you know that's my thoughts on from Beyond out of the way let's move on to the newest branch of content which is the Terrace From Below beta you know beta at the time of me recording this the new content is all tied to the caves which right off the bat I think is a great thing the caves prior to this update was rather lackluster only having a couple biomes that you really wanted to go to those being the archives and the ruins now there's an added Flair to the caves in the form of the Shadow Rift and the things that the shadow Rift brings are pretty unique and interesting I want to talk about my experience with them even though in comparison with the lunar content it is comparatively more limited let's start off with the miasma which I think is a pretty cool aesthetic you know I think it's a it's a neat mechanic it's really easy to deal with but not something that you can't and should just outright ignore which I really like how they implemented that acid rain is pretty annoying if you ask me just dealing damage with it basically just one means to really counter it is pretty annoying unless you want to go through a bunch of either tape or sewing kits just constantly I know that wicker can stop it with her book but since it's character specific I'm not counting it as a consistent enough solution but having another source of nighter is pretty nice for those who use gunpowder frequently and because after the event is enabled giant Boulders spawn basically provide extra rocks which is something that I'm never gonna complain about the new items however are where I get critical of this update the new armor and weapon seem fine for what they are they're just kind of new weapons and armor but the issue is They Don't Really outclass any of the items that we already have whether that be in how they're obtained and their overall usefulness dark swords are still easier to get and deal enough damage to cross over the ever so important 50 damage threshold and the new site's ability to gather things in an AOE is kinda well it's not great like the reason that you would usually use something like that is because you don't really have any good alternative to gather things in large quantities but the item is only obtainable post fuel lever at which point you already have access to the Bone Helm and probably a lure plant meaning that you can easily Harvest things in a lure plant by just swapping to Wicker the armor damage increase is fine but the issue is that if you want to tight things then you're not going to be able to consistently maximize its damage output and ultimately this just means that all of them are kind of just okay now let's get to the umbrella which I think is the perfect representation of these updates the umbrella primarily exists to protect from acid rain while the other items are somewhat mediocre All Things Considered but you know what else protects from acid rain not enabling the Rifts to begin with like here's the fundamental issue that all these updates have there's very little incentive to actually go through and enable the events because the downsides aren't bad enough to get due to doubt enabling them to begin with while the upsides aren't really enough to put that aversion to the updates at ease this isn't really an unpopular opinion from what I've seen and heard either most people who play this game to the late game stage tend to start the event run it for a couple days you know get the items then disable the Rifts outright after the fact with the exception of the Shadow race because a It's relatively offensive in comparison to the lunar stuff and B I haven't really seen anybody do the new content because you know still beta at the time of my recording is still pretty new but the biggest Defender is definitely the lunar riffs with the deadly bright Shades being a constant issue and overall just harassing anybody who's replanted things at all whether it be in their base as a functional option as decoration or just randomly replanting things because you don't have the inventory space to grab it I think the new updates would be fine if there was a way to keep the deadly bright Shades out of a desired location or lock them in a desired location bright shade spawning as often and in as large a number as a tend to in Worlds that go on for a long amount of time can be a huge annoyance and they tend to be more trouble than the Worth to begin with now with that being said I've kind of been dancing around a somewhat important factor these two updates aren't the whole picture clay said time and time again that they have a bigger plan for this line of updates and that the new content is going to be seemingly supplemented by even more content in the future the issue that I have with that is what we currently have is simply more trouble than it's worth which isn't a great indicator of what the future updates might end up being to understand this in its totality I think it's important to cover what clay seemingly wants out of these updates and like they said in their roadmap it's to introduce new challenges and features to people who are already experienced in the game this is a really good sentiment and as somebody who falls under that umbrella it also makes me really happy to see that Clay is throwing us a bone so to speak what the intention Behind These updates seem to be is to make post fuel lever and Celestial Champion sort of a hard mode like what Terraria has for example the issue with these two comparisons however is that Walteria hard mode does make the game a lot harder it also introduces super cool and unique items that you could strive for the new items and don't starve though are just kind of okay right now and my concern is that if we don't get items or features that are good enough or unique enough to carry the downsides that are introduced with the updates then the updates are just not going to be received positively the fact that some of the content also doesn't really have much counter play that's sustainable over a long period of time means that this update is questionable to even get into I do hope that this changes eventually though with the possibility of new updates making up for the downsides of currently dealing with the content and also still incentivizing you to go through with upgrading the items I do think that Clays let themselves with tons of room to improve and I just hope that they include more incentives to commit to enabling the new content that's all I really wanted to say this has kind of been a rant about me just complaining you know it's something I really wanted to get out of my system but let me know what you guys think about the updates because I've definitely seen a ton of differing options I've definitely seen a ton of differing opinions just on the subject as a whole but that's all I have to say I've said my piece I really hope that they get better and I actually do look forward to what comes in the future so until next time bye bye
