I feel like for Chihiro it was more than fear, it was self doubt. I was the same way. I didn't fear jumping from one stone to another in a shallow creek, I was doubting whether I had the balance to land without falling. I didn't fear or hate doing chores, I doubted whether I was strong enough or smart enough to do it right. It wasn't the task I was afraid of, it was me not being good enough to do said task.
For me personally, I saw myself mirrored in Chihiro as she was full of self doubt and anxiety. I saw her believe in her strengths and talents inspite of so many saying otherwise (Yubaba saying she was a lazy spoiled brat, "bad" Haku saying if she doesn't last to eat her, even her own parents brushing off her concerns instead of validating her feelings and helping her overcome them). Spirited Away was not just about a girl who enters a magical realm and has to save her parents, it was about a girl who learned how to trust and believe in herself and it helped me find that within myself as I was growing up.
Ooooo, I can't wait to watch this! I love Spirited Away!

This film wasn't my first Studio Ghibli film - that was the excellent Laputa: Castle in the Sky, but this is one of those movies I cherish because it's just something that no other studio could or would have made in the way this was made. There are so many elements that work together so brilliantly.

One of the characteristics of Ghibli movies that you both pointed out - about there not always being a strict plot or message - is so unique to Miyazaki. Very often, he starts thinking about the LOOKS of a movie, the colors and what emotions he wants to try and evoke and only then do plots start to form and it makes his stories so special!
I could recommend all the movies but I secretly hope you might do some of the "less cute" ones like Nausicaa or Princess Mononoke
This film is definitely bananas. I always appreciated how they made a young everyday girl the protagonist, as opposed to like seeing someone with perhaps more glamour, charisma, or someone with some obvious chip on their shoulder that they are going to fix during the film, etc. Chihiro's kind of ordinary in the best way possible. AHHH I'm so glad ya'll are doing Ghibli flicks!
Please, pleeease do Princess Mononoke at some point. It might break one of you, it's a complete 180 from Cozy Ghibli. It's Dark Ghibli, and so so good. It's PG-13 but feels R at times lol, pretty violent. The music is also f***ing phenomenal, and I cry every time I hear certain songs.
I'm told Grave of the Fireflies is worse though, one of those "don't need to see it twice" ones, but I haven't had the chance to see it yet. I mean, I'll do it if ya'll do it ...
Spirited Away, while AMAZING and one of my favorites, is not the trippiest dream-like movie.

fr though, shoutout to our king Hayao Miyazaki for creating all these phenomenal films with strong female leads who didn’t need to be rescued. he understood the assignment from day one while it took Disney forever to figure it out
