Fraud* not Failure
It's not that hard to fool people if you tell them what they want to hear.
There is also a six part podcast made by abc called "the dropout" that is pretty good.
Not wishing to be negative, though this is essentially a summary of the story as told by Bad Blood, the book written by John Carreyrou. It's a great read.
They tried to recruit me in 2015. Thankfully I had taken a new job with a company that already involved a cross country move to Austin, because it sounded soooooooo perfect. I'm really glad they didn't contact me 6 months prior.
While it is fascinating story, the whole thing was just a classic swindle; in that it works best on people who are greedy.
Everyone closed their eyes, and the deceptions were so idiotic that these people seemed to want to be deceived.
It ticked all the right boxes at the right time.
Super woman millenial CEO, grandiose plans and ideas, ruffled the feathers of all those kooky old male boomer CEOs.
It's almost as if it marketed itself to a sympathetic media that practically fell over itself to carry the banner for this company, and helped sell it to an increasingly misinformed and mislead public...
I'm in tech and work in Silicon Valley alot. Many knew she was a fraud, just the wrong people didn't.
It was kind of an inside joke in the area.
There's a great podcast about Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes called Drop Out. All based on the research in Bad Blood. Also there's a movie coming out, J Law is playing Holmes.
