once upon a time there was little me prancing around a bookstore I see this book series called the Royals everywhere not able to constrain my curiosity I read the summary on the back and come to the conclusion this sounds like trash a book about a girl who is adopted into a family with five hot sons this sign on the back of the book that sounds like a setup for total disaster flash forwards to a few months later I am reading the book why you ask did I make such a horrible decision well let me explain I was in a bit of a reading slump and in those moments I longed for a fluffy romantic read with addictive qualities that you know will not be good but it will at least be entertaining this book has raving reviews on Goodreads from people claiming that it is fun and addictive it is a New York Times number-one bestseller so I got no royalties from your library hoping that it would be the book that I was looking for that was a huge mistake hi guys welcome to a video in which I talk about what may well be the worst book that I have ever read in my entire life so let me preface this by saying that there is nothing inherently wrong with books that solely revolve around having a romance because let's not forget that is what I was looking for but if the only goal of your book is to be a steamy romance then at least do it well like this book did not just miss the only mark that it had it just it shot right past it this is the least romantic book I have ever read it is the most problematic book that I've ever read so buckle up because this read it's gonna be a long one last thing I want to mention is that this rent review is obviously going to be full of spoilers because I want to give you the full immersion how terrible this was the spoilers should not matter because I highly discourage you from reading this book unless you hate yourself so you can just keep watching and enjoy the ride this book paper princess the first book in the series called the Royals written by Aaron once it's out in whose parents are deceased and she is unexpectedly adopted by this dude this super rich dude called Calum royal and she is introduced into this family of Callum roll his mistress and his five superhot sons that's the only thing about plots nothing else happens in this book other than people desperately trying to get into each other's pants so let's start with our main character our main character I did forgot her name her name is Ella I forgot her name which is always a good sign you know if you're really stuck with me Ella is a stripper which when I first read that I thought you know that could actually be a very interesting setup for a young adult series because that's not something you see very often it could offer a new perspective who maybe break some taboos but no no no no no I was expecting too much so our main character is a stripper but she also makes it abundantly clear to you that she is just the stripper she never does anything with her clients she's not like all those other dirty girls who do she it's constantly judging other girls who want to sleep around who dress in short skirts she makes it very clear to you that she's a virgin and that that is a great thing because again she's not like those other girls that actually sleep around which I've actually just surprised that a book that is so clearly only about people sleeping around still manages to slut-shame constantly I honestly just perplexed that these authors because everyone is a pseudonym for two authors whose name I forgot that they decided to write a book about this like they just thought oh you know we're just gonna we're gonna write a book for all those teen girls about all these teen boys that are super hot and they all want to sleep with each other but you know we're also gonna make it very clear to our readers that of course that sleep around is bad and wearing short skirts is very bad and preferably you would always be virgin like if if that's your will for you maybe don't write a book about a bunch of people sleeping around that's just a suggestion I don't know I did make notes so now let's just go through my notes I cannot really make a very well structured review because this book has no plot that I can talk about the entire book is just about our main character Ella who is supposedly part of this huge intrigue of this royal family she goes through the super-rich High School where people are super mean is basically Mean Girls but with super rich people and the entire plot of this book just surrounds around her falling in love with one of the sons called Reed who is terribly rude to her but she still falls in love with him and she just wants to sleep with him basically that's kind of difficult this book and then she goes to high school where all sorts of ridiculous exaggerated high school stuff happened like people in cliques and people in rivalry with each other people just trying to like this one is kissing that person and this one's in this relationship with that's that person they tried to break up that other couple and they tried to sleep with each other and there's like these parties and there's drugs and there's alcohol so our main character Ella she falls in love with this guy Reed for absolutely no reason there is at one point in a book an attempt and emotional connection between the two where our main character breaks down because she misses her dead mother so she cries in front of this dude agreed and it I have never read such an unemotional scene like the writing in this book is just the driest thing that you have ever read like I just want to give you an example of one of one of the lines that is used in very like tension-filled moment and it's kind of a very good example of how everything is written in this book so our main character Ella and Reid are talking to each other they're facing each other and it's a moment full of tension the beautiful line that is given to us to readers to really feel the atmosphere of the moments loosely translated because I got this in Dutch his eyes become darker and his tongue comes out and brushes his lip and that is very sexy I have always been so confused by all these books that write lines like Oh his his tongue brushed his lip and I just I never understood it I just couldn't understand how someone could brush their lip with their tongue because your tongue is inside your mouth so how would you brush your tongue and I'm so glad everyone if you explained to me but first his tongue came out of his mouth before he brushed his lip thank you thank you so much also thank you for explaining to me that what he did was very sexy because otherwise I would not have noticed at all and also isn't that common knowledge that the least sexy way to describe something sexy is by using the word sexy and this is how everything in this book is written in this dry prose if I'm reading a book where the narrator is constantly explaining to you how hot everything is that is happening that is a clear sign that it's not hot do not worry that you will forget how hot these characters are because our girl Li will remind you constantly at one point she even describes read as the following he looks sexier than should you know you might you might think hey girl maybe you should maybe you should leave because he is announcing you you just said that yourself then we get to a point where they are both in the car and they are having banter a very sad attempt at banter first she starts describing how because she just staring at his face from the side and she starts describing how beautiful his ear is okay then here's an example of the just so snarky banter that these characters have when read notices that Ellie is staring at him he says you like the view don't you and she says oh no I was just taking a look and what a donkey looks like you know just in case I ever have to draw one for school then I already have some inspiration what a bird what a bird it's from all the things you could have said you said oh you know just in case I ever have to draw a donkey for school I was looking at you because that happened so normal this what what a burn what a burn in this scene there was also this other thing that bothered me and I I don't know maybe I'm just nitpicking but it's so I just wanted to explain it to you and maybe you can give your opinion so the plot twist at the end of the scene is that Reid turns out to be beaten up and half of his face is completely like covered in bruises and she like Ella did not notice the entire ride she was staring at his face but because she was looking at it from the side she didn't see it and she only noticed it at the end of the car right like you wouldn't know but is that right if you're just staring at someone's face from the side you would still see a little bit of this make Aaron what do you realize that the world is three-dimensional oh oh you didn't oh well that explains my only work Eric Turner so flex because then I mention how flat these characters are I really enjoy main characters that are strong characters but if that is their only personality traits you are still a flat character like I'm sorry not to mention that our love interest read I'm not exaggerating he has zero character I honestly cannot think of anything that makes him him except for the fact that he's beautiful and hot and rude not exactly very attractive if you ask me so we have five sons three of them you can immediately forget they are no importance to the story and they might as well not exist our main characters love interest who is absolutely completely rude to her but then we also have Easton who is just a whole other level in comparison to Easton Reid seems to be like a very sweet guy now that we're talking about Reid I guess we can also start talking about how this book is full and I mean full of people harassing each other and intimidating each other sexually every single person is making crude comments to each other especially Easton when he first meets Ella he is just constantly talking about everything that he wants to do to her and that she's attractive and then he that he wants to get her in his bed and he's like there's like this one scene where he's like touching himself and looking at her just to taunt her and that was one of the first scenes where something so gross happened now she's reading and I was like it's this happen is this really happening in this book right now because that is just really you and then read our love interest just stands there and Snickers because he thinks it's funny and that is our love interests my ladies and gentlemen someone who laughs when his girlfriend is being intimidated hmm but of course she can't just immediately get with Reid because she hates him right so she can't be with him at all but you know we have this other brother Easton who continuously Timah dates her he is constantly making very crude innuendos that are just so uncomfortable he pressures her into drinking alcohol and then she sleeps with him such a romantic book isn't that oh this book is a number one New York Times bestseller guys you think that's bad well we haven't even gone into the worst part yet like there's so much more to come ooh here's another just like so a little later in this book our main character Ella is like you know what I'm gonna do I'm gonna date this other guy so I can make jealous so she starts dating David a very rich charming and actually nice guy and then Oh his name was Danielle not David's sorry I guess you can tell that my memory of these characters names is absolutely terrible and that may be because none of them are memorable so she talks to read about the fact that she's dating him and then Reed tells her I would be an if I told you that you shouldn't go out with him bare and then the next line no I think to myself that would mean that he cares about me no it doesn't it obviously does not stop Ella from dating this guy Daniel who is super nice you know she goes through a party with him but as you may have noticed by now not a single male character in this book can possibly be not an Intimidator and he drugs her at the party with Molly so he can sleep with her he just drugs her with Molly and the result is that she gets all hot and bothered and just really wants to like sleep with someone so he's like uh yeah I got this going this girl's gonna sleep with me but then of course Reid comes to save the day and takes Ella away from this terrible guy Daniel you might think ah that's good he's safer that's where it stops no no no no the thing that happens is Ella is still like completely under the influence of Molly so she's still like super hot and bothered so the conclusion is well you know someone has to satisfy her needs now Bree just has to sleep with her because someone has to do it what like this is a big that actually happens in this book I I just I can't believe the authors broke this end up that's a good idea so they do it because someone has to do it right breach does multiple times say to Ella no I can't do this I can't take advantage of you now that you're drugged but you know that's a good thing to say in those moments but Ella just keeps pressing on it so that is like well well if you say so like the whole point of there not being any consent when someone's on their influence it's because if you're on their influence even if you say yes you're not thinking straight because of the substance you should have just said no girl go home you can deal with this yourself but no no no it wouldn't it wouldn't be this book if we didn't have a terrible reason for two people to hop into bed with each other now let's just get to a point where you know there is this rare moment of real emotion in this book okay you can tell that the authors were like yes we need to make these readers feel something in their hearts Reed feels terrible you know it was his fault that Ella got dropped so he has this moment where he says I'm angry at myself this is my fault I did this to you I am read the destroyer didn't you no it's just I can just imagine these authors sitting around the table like yes Reed the destroyer this is what the teen girls want to see this is the emotion that they're looking for her basically we get to the end of the book she's going through all these things together with her half-brothers those five sons including her love interest they've been through so much things together like high school drama and rich people fighting each other this is the conclusion things are always happening here they're not always fun things but I wasn't alone and now in this moment of loneliness I realize that I don't like being alone it is better to be with friends and family around you even if their family is functioning really bad yeah you could assault it multiple times by members of this family why are you not running away you know it's better to just have people around you that are terrible than being alone right that that's the conclusion of this book that actually is the conclusion of this book actually no that is not the end of the book because at around that point Reid and Ella do get together but that's not where the book ends obviously because the last fifty pages is solely revolving around Reid and Ella working up to the moment they're gonna have sexy pounds for the first time and it's not even done well like again they're really making a point of defective our main character as a virgin even though she did actually do a lot of things with other guys but for some reason that's become very weird heteronormative ideas around what it means to do stuff together which is a little sad but you know at that point into the book I wasn't even surprised anymore at the end they finally do it everything is great except the biggest plot word is that then in those final ten pages Ella realizes that Reid has been sleeping with his father's mistress and it breaks her emotionally because she finally thought she could be together with him even though she knew throughout these a book that he was an she's still surprised that he is also sleeping with someone else who is his father's mistress did I mention that's and this is another thing that really bothered me or about this book in the you know if this is the plot you know like this is the book and this is the plot in this tiny bit of plot this book manages to combine subjects of alcoholism gambling addiction death assaults diseases and they're all just thrown into there for trauma without giving the serious attention to those subjects that they need it's just it's just terribly disrespectful to use those things for tragedy and drama I screamed out loud multiple times when I was reading this book luckily I was alone but that doesn't happen very often I'm just sitting there thinking you deserve that I think the reason that it effects me so much is that I know that this is gonna be probably one of the very first books that a lot of teen girls are gonna be exposed to that are about relationships and all sorts of adult things and it's just gonna set such a bad example and I really don't like that so I really want to make this video if you want to read a book that's just like romance there are better books out there hope you enjoyed it and I will hopefully see you soon goodbye [Music]
