so hi folks it's not the nicest day to be out today but we're not going to call it bad weather we're going to call it good atmosphere and this is where i'm taking you today see here we are at the wallace monument in sterling oh look who we find hi now there is like a courtesy bus that will take you up the hill i think we'll just walk yay nobody checked your tickets no because they don't check your tickets so the top oh so you've been here before tell me about your memories so i was here before walked up the hill stopped here seen like loads of buses and people and then they asked me to pay 10 quid so i gave up it looks like you have to go through the coffee shop and souvenir shop so because they ask you to pay 10 quid i thought that you have to pay to actually have an access to the store okay but you don't you can just walk around the grounds i didn't know that it's called it's it's cold today the feels like's about minus four it said it was going to be snowing so you can walk around all these grounds for free it's only going to cost you a tenner against the monument still not worth it but we'll see where's our thumbnail oh look at that wood carving that's um the sterling bridge i think that's where william wallace had his greatest victory i think it was his only victory but that's one of the things with all the myth and legends william wallace is someone i know nothing about he's meant to be our national hero but i know nothing about him was he a good guy was he a bad guy that depends who you ask very true so you can take the shuttle bus so you can take this little ziggy zaggery path all the way up to the monument oh who's that it's not robert the bruce king robert the bruce ah robert the bruce and mr burns himself they're talking to robert the bruce i'm sure it was him that was called braveheart and not william wallace the movie's all wrong folks but it's a catchy title yeah here's the wee path you can take if you're not taking the shuttle bus but we don't take shuttle buses do we [Applause] that's a very nice carving you're a giant ah there's my flag i feel so patriotic when i come up here oh it's good actually doesn't it yeah the view is amazing and remember folks you come up here for free oh here we go so on a good day these are the things you can see not today from up here just outside the main entrance you've got sterling castle on that mound over there beneath you've got the river forth that's still winding its way up into the hills and over that way that'll take you on towards crayon lara and glencoe and on the other side you can't really see the hills over this side but they're all covered in snow and also covered in clouds just now i'm afraid see there is this shuttle bus that will bring you all the way up and just over to the right is throwing castle that's the location of the battle of stirling bridge that was the battle that william wallace won the whole reason this monument's here at all and the whole reason he's famous i think he was famous because of the movie all right let's go ahead and get you out the cold so we'll have 246 steps to get to the top of the monument but we can stop in each room and there'll be some more information in each of these places before we get up to the roof let's get going first stop the hall of arms [Applause] edward's forces march north to crush the thread slowly and stone bridge collapses the scots gain ground and chaos breaks out in the english right against odds the scots are victorious that was a nice little film but even as a scotsman i would say that was a weave at one sided i could even lift up such a big sword the exhibition's a nice mix of information interactive displays replicas and even the odd original pieces you'll see in a moment with the lubeck letter stephen i have this picture in here original picture in color amazing [Music] hi i know look at the windows ah we haven't been counting these steps but here we are at the hall of heroes this impressive hall celebrates scottish heroes throughout the centuries from the likes of adam smith david livingstone and james watt to more recent heroes like maggie keswick jenks and of course this fella once again [Music] see the frontal battle lower see approach proud edward's power chains and slavery for scotland's king in law freedom's sword will strongly draw do you like to choose explore our tour art which is like dog which color you like best purple if you take another name a book sometimes you like best unicorn mastermind inventive creative and resourceful like margaret mcdonald macintosh she was an artist just like you the royal chamber [Music] things got a wee bit more interactive up here on the top floor and it was fun comparing now and then as well as designing our own coat of arms [Music] oh that's cool look at these these long spears that's like the hedgehog defense against the english and braveheart [Music] how many steps have we done i'll count one will be going down we've made it to the top look there's snow on the brick [Music] i must have passed a stunning monument a thousand times so it was well overdue a visit and stepping out on the exposed roof area was a pleasure even in such increment weather look at the fog oh the fog is slower right just climbing the last few steps to the very top of the wallace monument it's freezing up here how are you get over here with the clouds over the trees [Music] hey [Music] the view from up here doesn't stretch very far today but it's still beautiful oh boy this is definitely my favorite viewpoint with a big bend in the river and you've got the castle just in the background i didn't expect he could get right up to this platform but it's certainly time to leave again let's get out of here are you hiding away yes because it's so windy scored out of ten eight out of ten yes yeah yeah strong gate i'm gonna go one higher i'm going nine out of ten it's dropping a point only for william wallace's sketchy history only for mel gibson pictures it didn't feel like 247 steps today no my head is almost spinning this is the keeper's lodge very cozy nice yeah how cool is it that they give you this just to hang a button just rest [Music] this is amazing [Music] despite us having a good laugh at mel gibson as william wallace nobody actually knows what he looked like there were no sketches done of him or anything there are some notes saying he was a big strapping lad but nobody really knows maybe he looked exactly like mel we need to go to the gift shop this was a cracking wee gift shop with something for all ages there's also one at the bottom of the hill but this one's better [Music] drowning people in the locks and the rivers [Music] [Music] [Music] bye do you enjoy it yes very cool that was fantastic there's lots of little trails here as well that you can go on but i'm not sure it's the day for it you can take our lives but you'll never take her [Music] [Laughter] oh man that's brilliant good benches on the viewpoint enjoying the view chilling look at everything you can see from here wow i can see it i can see it yep here okay oh that was good but it's absolutely freezing so we've popped into the cafe and we'll give that a wee review as well hold on just for the camera what did you just say i left my wallet in a car but i'll send you money after okay wow hello hello what have we got here so that's cauliflower soup and the cinnamon bun and drinks very nice and i couldn't have anything but an iron brew today yeah [Music] oh boy this is good do you like it very very good i'll just see how good was that cafe that's all for today folks we'll see you soon bye [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] oh no they've all lost their heads stephen
