The VORTEX OF DANGER Strikes Again!

[Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] ready oh hey everybody we're at daytona international speedway in daytona beach florida on the high banks running with the world racing league wrl 14 hour endurance race today's practice we've already been out for a little bit of practice i got three co-drivers lars jason and vilas and doing some adjustments on this car it's a porsche gt4 cayman for real it's in the top class it'll be one of the fastest cars in the race and wrl has developed to be like the top level of the amateur endurance race series they have a lot of very sweet insulable cars like an ncgtd and we're going to run later in the day to finish qualifying and get everybody packaged up two of the co-drivers have never run here before so we're getting everybody up to speed at daytona it's very much a break track tomorrow 14 hours we start at 9 00 a.m and we run until 11 p.m lights on the whole nine yards it's going to be another racing good time thanks for joining us we've had a little rain and a forecast for tomorrow 50 chance of rain so i'm gonna get in the uh gt4 porsche here see what it feels like in the wet all right we're fueling up gonna go out on the wet track these hank rs4s are a decent wet tire they got the uh tread for it it's not real sticky but they last forever so let's see what it feels like in the wet [Music] copy 15 minutes got the w2w came in gt4 out in a wet session just to see what would happen because the forecast looks very 50 tomorrow here in daytona it may rain may not probably will at some point so we went out in the wet it was sudden the car would slip out slip out and and had to have real fast directions to catch it and it was kind of dicey very clear rain line on the track i had to go outside the normal race line the normal race line gets polished and it's very slippery wet and so if i go outside that it's more coarse and it grips the tires better we're on hand kugara's floors which are 200 treadwear tire they're not real soft but they're way stickier than a street tire and it was it was kind of dicey but it got a lot better but the track was drying and i talked to cameron lawrence a racer who's also in another car on this team he said he's raced on him in the wet and he thinks that they are very dicey for a couple of laps and then they get better i'm not so sure but i can be hopeful that he's right the track was drying so i wasn't sure how much of that was tire and how much of it was track because it was drying rapidly in fact the sun came out for like the only time today right after it rained florida i lived here for years in the past so tomorrow we race it's 50 50 on rain for tomorrow and the car is going to be a little dicey in the wet it's actually better in the dry and mostly 14 hours in wrl we want to survive well we're going on about two hours since the start of the race here at daytona with will to win racing i'm standing among trophies this team wins a lot but not today it was the vortex of danger strikes again first driver went out doing a great job lap times coming down got close to to my time great job reminds me of uh when we ran with w2w at barber a few weeks ago but trying to go under a car that he was lapping the car was out wide didn't see him came down on him that's exactly what the vortex of danger is about in this series are all these endurance racing series you've got to drive assuming the cars don't see you it's kind of like if you ride a motorcycle on the street you've got to assume they don't see you and that's probably what happened i haven't seen the video yet i think we're going to be able to come up with that the vortex of danger is means that the car ahead of you has begun to turn from the corner or is in the corner and it looks like you have an opportunity but you're in the corner it it's tempting it sucks you in but it's too late that car is probably going to come down because he can't see you when you're back here you're in his blind spot that's the danger anyway it was pretty light hit but the wheels kind of hooked up and threw the car in the air and it broke a shock tower broke the chassis it was a porsche cayman gt4 and we're done we're out of luck unfortunately uh all right good news mark's gonna put me in the 982 car it's running in the top ten there have been some tire issues but it's a good car in a good position we got a long way to go i'm getting in now or in an hour depending on whether co-driver hunter can do a double stint or not we're going to find out [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] foreign so [Music] uh [Applause] uh huh right [Applause] [Laughter] [Music] so come on okay [Applause] so okay [Music] [Music] so so all right i'm depressed and it's all because of the vortex of danger claimed another victim the 981 w2w will to win race car porsche cayman gt4 what a machine well prepared by a top quality team but the guy that started it got tangled with some slow car he was passing there was a little misunderstanding and it happens it's it's uh tricky running these endurance races with 80 cars wide variety of speeds wide variety of drivers so no more spins it's actually very similar to what happened with the corvette that i ran with w2w at barber don't get to have the run don't get to go for the win racing is tough it doesn't always go your way but the car's all in great and owner mark martin was good enough to let me have a shot at it in his car the 982 which ended up finishing six or seven had a great run the whole way through so at least that's something for my driving drug right it's better than way better than nothing i'm gonna drive with this team again at sebring where there's going to be a 25-hour race in the fall and then i'll just stay in touch with mark martin and try to big my way to any more rides i can get if somebody drops out last minute another big day of racing at daytona another victim of the vortex of danger when that car ahead of you sitting in the corner be careful about sticking your nose under it because he probably doesn't see [Music] you so just
