all my good friends know i'm a huge fan of any camaro 1le especially the ss well there's a new competitor the new ford mustang mach 1. this ought to be interesting atlanta motorsports park is located about an hour north outside of atlanta also known as amp or amp great winding track a really nice facility it's members only you join and they've allowed us to come today to do our testing and they've got garages they've got a golf green they've got a pool area place where your kids can hang out and inside they've got workout rooms offices meeting rooms i mean everything today we're here with the mustang mach 1 a brand new model of the mustang and my friend here kellan goins has offered to let us test his camaro ss1le it's a 2018. [Music] there's a v8 camaro manual transmission only in the in the good old days and compared to this mustang mach 1. it belongs to my friend jack goldie it's an automatic now kellen thank you very much for letting me try your car out it's there no problem no problem so you told me that you've only had this car a short time yes sir that's correct how long um i would say about a month a month yes sir so you're just getting to know it yes that's great [Music] now why did you choose a one less i wanted basically a track ready car for around the price range from 30 to 40 thousand dollars something i could just hop in hit the track straight away no modifications needed it could take the abuse it could withstand it and put together some fast laptops so with the help of your reviews and the internet this is what i chose great well i'll tell you you have a great choice yes sir i love the 1les and you're right they're track ready yes sir you can go straight down and run them flat out that's right and i bought one too the little force yes sir well kellen thank you we're going to take a look at both these cars and we'll start with the mach 1. [Music] [Music] [Music] okay we're rolling out on the amp and a brand new 21 ford mach 1. the mach 1 does not have the flat plane engine which is fine by me i'm not a big fan because it's not happy long term on track i'm over the top love the brakes got a fat power man around the carousel turn six taiwan apex lead oh it puts power down i level on the chassis puts power down down to the town my favorite corner really apex a trailbreaker got the loose down the hill there then the third team floated over the top hooks oh all right nice balance little pushy through the middle of the corner it wants track alignment we're on sport cup twos the engine is powerful normally aspirated the transmission is the 10-speed automatic and it's really good on track always picking the right gear and just snapping off those ships boom boom boom easy car to drive fast the stability control is off ford calls it advanced track that's off i'm the stability control the suspension has amazing ride i mean it soaks up the bumps even in track mode very impressive lap after lap this car i think it might even be faster after about five laps because the tires are gonna hold up longer depends on the track really pleased with the handling a lot of understeer mid corner that's going to need uh track alignment i should have had jack do that two and a half degrees boom perfecto all right let's go get that camaro ss 108 and give it a shot my good friend jack goldie races the flying moose with me in fact we won last weekend overall and this is his mach 1 and he's good enough to let me try it out for this video jack has had a mustang boss 2013 boss laguna seca and he's also has had an ss1le exactly like this now you're back to a mustang jack why the mach one well before i bought the camaro i test drove a shelby at sebring and i really liked it i wasn't crazy about the flat crank that platform oh so i bought the uh one le it was just like that one partially i was ready to try something else it wasn't just a track car because i drive it all the time that had a stick shift and i've been shifting gears for like 50 years that's kind of over it i like high revs i mean it excites me to hear a ford engine riff the camaro is i think it revs like a thousand less maybe yes it's bigger and it runs less tell me about the automatic why'd you go from a stick to an automatic it's a daily kind of driver and then i'm hoping my wife can you know have drive this oh yeah and yeah i think she's gonna like it frankly it's comfortable and that transmission is smooth on the street it's a little busy it's shifting gears a lot but on track i think you're gonna love it in the old days you had to control the car more you know with the gear shift because the brakes and all that weren't as good i don't think we need the gears the the automatics used to rob a lot of power i think also yeah and the new transmissions they're just really good they're way better way better jack thanks for sharing your car i appreciate it man love you brother [Music] all right here we go kids are good thanks joshua off we go we're in track mode kellen says everything is off i don't believe him we'll see big thanks to kellen for letting me borrow his car we put a set of sport cup twos on it that i had laying around so they're the same size as what's on the mustang mach 1. these tires were on only did three laps this ls is it's a 6.2 liter but it revs oh yeah let's go 73 in second gear it's my first lap in the 1le so we're going to be a little careful all right let's see what we got so thanks for the throw out kevin that was a good idea it's like the mustang stops a little better camaro's a little bit assy here and there nope stability trash control coming on i could feel it carry speed through ten through eleven use the curb this thing is geared high let me tell you oh we need second gear over the top there still soaks up bumps but not as compliant as the mach one reached certain limit i think the pads may it may be the first time they've ever been hot we'll cool them off the slap while we catch the boxster brake zone where i'm trying second gear around the [Music] carousel woo stick shift baby getting to be really old school having that use all of it people that's a better run through 11. we need second gear up here in 13 just for that squirt she will break them in the middle of third i got it i got it i don't know about you folks but that was exciting brakes uh get a little soft which is unusual for an ss i think they've just never been hot before or they need better uh fluid you know brake flush we'll talk to kellen about that he's only had the car a very short time i think the mustang's more powerful uh it definitely has more gears the automatic in the mustang is a 10 speed and it just really is close ratio in those lower gears and rips off the shifts really quick and close together this car has a little looseness in the middle of the corner that i haven't noticed in 1les before i think because of the track alignment it's got a lot of front negative camber boy we had a good run through 11. bottomed it out i could feel the suspension we didn't hit anything but it was definitely on the bump rubbers and we were in track mode there's still a little bit of stability and mostly traction control which i don't like i like driving on track though mustang definitely stopping better than this one le is i'm not used to feeling that kind of fade this car has 40 000 miles on it it may not have the one le pads in it i'm a little suspicious but i'm dying to see what the lap time is i think the mustang was faster i think we were probably up around a 30 with this and we had a 28 with the mustang but we'll see [Music] so [Music] we took these cars both on track and getting here we prepped the camaro by putting the exact same tires on it that are an option on the mach one they're big michelin sport cup twos 305 front 315 back 19 inch wheel here 20 inch wheel here kellen takes his car over to a place called global tire in the lawrenceville area outside atlanta and global tire put a track alignment on it the mach 1 is straight from the dealership first thing i noticed is that quite a bit of understeer mid corner and it would no doubt benefit from adding more negative camber and the camaro really impressive grip with the track alignment and these big fat sticky tires but something that i found in the camaro that was unusual was mid corner over steer it had a little power over steer right in the middle of the corner which is something the ss1le doesn't normally do on a track at higher speeds you need stability and you need to be able to put that power down the mach 1 puts the power down better the mach 1 is a little bit heavier the mach 1 has that automatic that is so easy you don't even really have to put it in sport mode it figures it out and then just rips off those gears all performance mustangs especially shelby's and this mach one have a very strong brake pedal quick response and a lot of bite i really like that i got no fade whatsoever the car stopped really well the camaro on the other hand had a fair amount of fade by the second or third lap the pedal was getting quite long now this car has 42 000 miles on it it is not brand new and we don't know what kind of drama these brake pads have been through before i would say a lot they might not even be stock so in the end the mustang turned a lap of a 128.6 here which is fast at amp i was impressed in fact in their downforce car session you have to be able to get under a 130. so we're in the downforce lap time speeds which is pretty impressive we're 30 750 pound streetcar the camaro on the other hand a little bit oversteer had that brake fade still a super track focus 1le and one of my favorite cars on the same big fat michelins 129 zero four tenths people four tenths for a set of brake pads you might turn that right around track alignment you might get further ahead but today the mach 1 was a little bit faster the mach one's a little more comfortable the mach one has the automatic there is an automatic version of the ss1le available now with the same transmission typically the automatics in today's world are faster because they shift so fast and in the case of the 10 speed they have so many gears they keep the engine in the power band my choice today i go with the mach 1. it's more stable it's got that super fast automatic transmission and it stops better but look at this camaro even with the brake issue and a stick shift right on its heels these two are a good match next time out it's just going to depend on the setup across the line [Music]
