welcome back even if you haven't seen it you would have heard of the oscar-nominated film lion and the incredible story of the aussie woman who adopted a little boy from india now sue briley opens up on her own difficult childhood and the untold story behind lyon i never gave up hope or trying to find home it was something that i'd longed for for so many years the world fell in love with the extraordinary tale of sarub really the five-year-old little indian boy separated from his brother birth mother and tiny indian village after falling asleep on a terrifying train trip he ended up across the other side of the country scared lost and alone finding himself stranded on the streets of calcutta i figured out after sort of searching for a long time by catching trains and um and walking around this uh massive labyrinth of uh of a city calcutta um that you know i came to a point where there's no way of finding home after enormous trauma suru ended up in an orphanage and was adopted by his australian parents sue and john brealy we saw his little picture said yes there in and after that was the process of bringing him to australia saroo's new life in hobart was perfect but he still yearned for india after 25 years relying on childhood memories he searched tirelessly on google maps meticulously tracing every railway track out of calcutta finally pinpointing his birth mother i think the thing about it is that if you're determined enough to find something and you have a vision and a view then you're bound to to find it it was pretty special it was really one of the highlights in my life that incredible reunion inspired hollywood his life immortalised into the film lion nicole kidman started sue saroo's adoptive mother we really connected quite closely we related as both being adoptive mothers and she really is just a gorgeous natural person and i was so glad that when um sue saw it she was um so embracing of it because obviously it's very hard and to see yourself interpreted on screen by somebody else and probably the most important thing is that she feels embracing of the portrayal i'm really happy and grateful that um it's become a motion picture um it's like uh you know an accomplishment that i never thought i'd uh you know be be at that sort of stage in sue's new memoir lioness this famous tasmanian mother reveals for the first time it wasn't only her son that had a traumatic childhood saroo didn't know about his hardship because it was his normal in a lot of ways what i was dealing with was my normal so it was a very violent aggressive domineering father with three daughters that ruled with an iron fist when i read the book i really understood how everything that mum sort of went through the trials and tribulations and the sorrows i think overall my story is of hope especially to young people who are living a difficult life because you can make that decision to move forward and go in a different direction it was her abusive childhood that shaped her attitude towards motherhood and the reason why she decided to adopt sue hopes that other australians can experience the same joys she has as a mother without having to endure all the red tape i think it's virtually impossible to adopt from overseas now in australia i hope that my book will re-awaken the possibility that there is another way to form a family but the people who decide to go down that path are going to have to be pretty pushy to succeed it's going to be quite a battle to bring a child to australia from overseas suru a motivational speaker lives in spain now far from the streets of calcutta and the comfort of hobart the story of my life is always movement you know the world is my playground and a home is wherever i sort of make it hobart australia will be will be where the heart is really and sue's book line s is available now
