We're in Istanbul and we just crossed the  European side and come over to the Asian side   So you might think that you know what Turkish food is I thought I knew what Turkish food was  We've come here on a street food tour to  find out exactly what is traditional Turkish food So we've hired ourselves a guide for  the evening who's going to take us through   and show us some of the local cuisine  some of the traditional food   Yeah we are really looking forward to it I'm super excited Alright our first stop is right here So here we've met up with our guide Onder   and he's taking us through on the food tour this evening He's brought us to a pickle place  Turkish people love their pickles  So we will grow strong You use to do this as a boy? Its a couple of weeks process  they pickle them in the barrels So it's the chickpeas is what ferments it Okay there you go Alright shall we give it a go let's try some pickle juice That's good that's yeah it's  like pickle juice it's great I don't know why I wasn't expecting it to taste  like pickle juice when its pickle juice It's good capsicum, okra Come on Timmy Try the pickle juice go go go It's not super sour Not as bad as I thought  I was expecting to do the old But it's not too bad, yeah not too bad Pleasantly surprised actually My parents are German so I grew up with lots of pickles but he didn't grow up with pickles You can find here also German pickles Black olive Really taste that one  So grilled olive grilled green olive That's really good So we're trying a few of these different olives here and Mama Mia they are so meaty and tasty   those big Kalamata olives and then the Beldi olives Wow they're just so meaty and the oil and the flavor in it is just so tasty This is my kind of shop cheese upon cheese upon cheese   love it with a bit of olives So here now we're trying some cured beef and   Also some stuffed vine leaves stuff with rice  The Greeks do something similar obviously dolmades One difference with the stuffed vine leaves here in Turkey A common style the way they do it is that they  have rice with sour cherries inside the vine leaf Obviously dolmades in Greece  usually have like a bit of a lemon sauce  Often at times they have a bit more lemon flavour  These sour cherries are a little bit sour a little bit sweet   So you get that bit of a fruity flavor  as you bite into it it's really delicious   and something that's unique to Turkey So a lot of the fish shops here they open the gills of the fish and that way you can see you can  see how fresh they are from the gills inside   They put them out open like that  so customers can see ah it's fresh just recently So Onder where have we come to now? So this is the acquired taste So I do like my cheese but as Timmy knows I'm not a fan of strong cheese But I am going to try it It's an acquired taste apparently so we'll see I'm going to go for the little tiny piece I'm a chicken oh yeah okay It's got that real sour kind of sheepy milk  kind of taste to it but yeah it's not bad  So İçli Köfte it's like bulgar wheat  on the outside and inside it's got minced beef   I'll just open it for you so you can see  look at that it's like a little parcel smells good It's like a pie just need some  tomato sauce and I'd be back in Oz So we're going to sit here and watch the world go by...people watch Okay so here we're having some lahmacun It's traditional in the southeast of Turkey  To have this for breakfast so whereas in the west they more have the pide  Which is like the boat shaped it's a bit of a thicker bread with some meat filling or vegetable filling This is a really thin bread as you can see A really thin bread that's got minced beef and lamb on it Yeah they would have this for breakfast This here is a super popular drink It's basically a salted Lassie It's a drinking yogurt so thin down yogurt with some salt in it they call it Ayran Everybody here drinks it Apparently it's the perfect accompaniment to have with this so we'll give it a go Well that one was yummy that's one of my favorites so far  That fresh bread was so good You can see all the locals at the front there all enjoying eating   Watch out for the bikes  They're not going to watch out for you so you need to watch out for them One of the interesting things you know  with these food tours often times there's no way you can eat all of the food you know it's small bites but as the evening goes   you just get full and full and full  and like it's just too much  So one interesting thing that they do here is that any of the leftover food You don't have to feel like you have to eat everything because any of the leftover food  They actually feed it to the street dogs and street cats so it's not going to go to waste   And there's plenty of them around you see them everywhere  You don't have to feel bad Just take a bite or two enjoy it I know you're going to want to eat it all  because it's so delicious but save some room   Believe me save some room Yeah we're contributing to feeding the animal population here in Istanbul looking after them Ok this is what I've been looking forward to We've seen these muscle street vendors everywhere right throughout actually Turkey This is a real famous one they open the muscle up they put rice and a few things inside It's so popular there's people everywhere that are trying it too but anyway Bit of lemon on it, I love me muscles and seafood and I'm looking forward to trying this So use one like a spoon to scoop into your mouth Lovely flavour you can really taste all the rice that they stuffed inside it the muscle just compliments the rice Time for number two Yeah good What's this soup called again Ezogelin or Ezobride We have got some famous lentil soup which you can see is served quite often around Turkey How good does that look It's just like a really wholesome hearty  lentil soup it's really actually quite tasty And this is your favourite Onder Yes I can say my favourite   So the place behind me Ciya  If you've ever seen on Netflix Chef's Table  Go to episode 5 and you can see this place on there There's a series about the head chef in there   It became super famous for its kebabs Some time ago a New York journalist came wrote an article about it, became very famous lots of foreigners tourists came here to eat their kebabs Look how thick that yogurt You could just about cut it with knife Let's try this You're not going to like it Timmy No Timmy wont like it  That's all-mine no stay away I've been looking forward to all these doner kebabs You see how much Serena got You don't do like that you get a good size like that  How good is this and this! That butter melted hot butter just adds that extra element of flavour through the meat  A secret recipe they may share it with us if I ask but I cannot give it to you If I tell you I have to kill you So a great way to wash down all the food we've been having is with a one of the oldest breweries Or the oldest brewery in all of Istanbul under the Ottoman Empire This is called Bomonti beer it was back in the early 19th century old recipe that they have still going today  so looking forward to trying that Here goes enjoy me beers Wow it's lovely flavour very hoppy We're just leaving the Asian side of Istanbul and now we're catching the ferry back over to the European side  and try some European style Turkish food We've made it back to the European side of Istanbul Well the back streets of Istanbul here on the European side are alive  We are going to try those fish sandwiches Absolutely famous here Everyone says so beautiful to have the fish wrap and this is the most famous one The lineup is huge sometimes it can be over 100 meters long   Even now it's 10:00 at night and there is still that line up One of the unique things, it's mackerel  grilled and they put lettuce onion and tomato but the little secret they put on is pomegranate sauce It gives that real sourness to it as well Sounds delicious maybe tomorrow or the next day Next place the last place before dessert Well that's a little bit fancy Look at that very fancy Wow look at that This is eggplant kebab So I'm peeling off the skin because the eggplant Kebab has been obviously grilled over coals   So the skin has burnt so it's best to peel that off You got to chop it up so that you can eat it Then we get a little bit of this minced lamb and beef Chop that through it as well Now I'm going to put some of these dips Now I'm going to roll it up That's what you call an eggplant kebab Beautiful and smoky roasty.....delicious This here is known as the most famous baklava or place to get the most famous baklava in all of Istanbul As you can see dates back to 1843 the same family  have been operating it since then same recipe People come from all over for their baklava It's pretty popular people here love their baklava Have three different Turkish delight one more popular fruits and the pistachio Next more pistachio and small Turkish delight   Next all the fruits Tim and the nuts This is almond and the halwa all together with pistachio I'm sorry my English very bad  No your English is good, better than my Turkish Okay my first taste of kunefe in Turkey Looks pretty good want to make sure I get a bit with cheese and pistachios Packed with pistachios not too  sweet buttery it's really good  It's so different to what I've had in Australia After a good night's rest digesting all of  that food we ate on the street food tour  We head out to check out some of the suggestions  Onder made and to explore more of this amazing city Trying my first fish wrap  This is probably one of the most famous   As you saw just the other night the lineup can be quite big The smells amazing and it's well known one of the most popular fish wraps or fish sandwiches here in Istanbul Come to the best Fisher Here it comes looking forward it it's going to be very tasty Teşekkürler (Thank you) They always give you wet wipes around here which is awesome just clean up your fingers after food Oh man yeah wow It's a mackerel and it's been fried they put all these other spices on it don't know what they are and a few different oils  but have a bite what do you think? Tastes pretty good just a small little bite That's not a small little bite  Flaming heck, I should have got two Good? You can tell from all the fish  around the side of her mouth Beautifully grilled fresh mackerel really crunchy fresh salad not wilted or anything  Yeah it's good you got to get here and try this The bread is so thin and like crispy because it's been finished off on the grill Wow that's really good Sokak Lezzeti is the place I got another one I gave Serena a bite  and it all disappeared I didn't even get bite So I got this time a double oh man it was so good That one bite was just like I'm getting another one of them
