what's up everybody coach Mills here and today we're going to be breaking down the ultimate OverWatch 2 beginner's guide now this is primarily targeting beginners or those of you who haven't played OverWatch in a long time so this is a huge refresher but of course for those of you who are Advanced OverWatch players you're still gonna learn something in this OverWatch 2 beginner's guide about the differences between OverWatch 1 and OverWatch 2. also if you're a former top 500 doomfist player this is the perfect guide for you because you finally get to learn the game now starting off OverWatch 2 is a 5v5 first person ability shooter it's gonna have a combination of MOBA and first person shooter elements now OverWatch has over 30 unique Heroes with all different abilities and weaponry and each of these heroes are going to be separated into three roles DPS or damage per second tanks and supports now in competitive or roll lock play which is the standard play mode in OverWatch there is one tank two DPS and two supports on each team player players will prematurely lock in their role in ranked and they'll have a separate rank for each role furthermore no two characters on the same side can be picked meaning that if they oink your tour you gotta lock in that symmetra now in OverWatch 2 characters are gonna have passive abilities that are automatically applied they could either be activated such as Genji trying to wall climb where it automatically activates or it's going to be a passive on your character that adds some sort of element we'll get some more examples of those later you also have cooldown abilities that have a set cooldown learning each of these for different characters is going to be a great way to improve your skill level because then you know exactly when to expect an enemy ability to come up and knowing when you have your own is going to allow you to properly time your engagements next up there are earned abilities typically ultimates where you can earn it by doing a certain amount of damage but there are some abilities that you can earn by accomplishing a certain thing and it's pretty specific like Genji's dash for instance which is Technic a cool down ability where you will get it back after a set amount of time however if you get an elimination you get it immediately off of cooldown now last up is the ultimate and ultimates are gained through damage dealt to players healing done or over time think of ultimates as powerful super abilities that can shift the tide of battle if used correctly ultimates can be various types like large amounts of direct damage a ton of information like widowmaker's ultimate that gives you full information about where enemies are through walls healing and protection like an ultimate like Lucille's beat that protects your entire team and prevents them from dying by giving them an overshield or a large amount of CC or crowd control like zarya's graviton surge a common impactful strategy is actually combining powerful ultimates together with the teammate to get multiplied impact and typically multiple kills and a one team fight which is another term that we'll talk about later on in the video now hero swapping can be done at any time if you go back to the spawn so after you die AI or if you walk back to spawn you're going to be able to go and swap your hero and a change from OverWatch 1 to OverWatch 2 to encourage hero swapping is now you get a refund of 30 of your olds on hero swap so if you had your ultimate and you swap to a new hero without using it you're gonna get 30 of your old back now every role in the game has a standard passive that is applied worldwide while this is subject to change these are the current role passives on each roll DPS get a 25 movement and reload speed increase for 2.5 seconds after a kill this does not stack but it does refresh this gives the DPS a burst of power after they secure that kill whether they want to use the movement and reload speed increase to going for more or run away altogether the choice is up to you now supports get a passive heal after taking no damage for a set amount of time 15 HP per second after one second goes by of taking no damage this means if you can run away safely you don't need another healer or even to exhaust your own abilities to heal yourself up you just need to wait for your health to regenerate keep in mind though characters that already had a healing passive get this boost on top of their previous one like Mercy for instance now last up is tanks and tanks have a reduction to knock back or crowd control CC and they also generate the enemy Less Old charge when they're dealt damage this is a 30 reduction to both so they're gonna fuel enemies ultimates far less and they're not gonna be able to be knocked around or displaced anywhere near as much now these passives give each role a unique identity they share with each other and it's important to understand each one because it can change how you play a fight or an engagement as an example let's say you're chasing down a support as a DPS but they get away from you for a little bit too long you can realize that they will probably be full HP now because they're passive kicked in and if you continue to pursue them you're gonna run face first into a full HP support now every rule has a job and for tanks it's space creation which is a really Advanced concept but to summarize it it's basically the areas on the map that you want to push through occupy deal damage from and heal from basically all the areas that you want to control and a tank because they have more Health they're less likely to get cc'd and they can play on the front line while getting healed they're much more capable of taking space than any other role however completely separate video in the future breaking down space and an advanced tanking guide but for now this is a summary of what a tank's supposed to do next up is that DPS and damage dealers are supposed to deal damage and get picks I will note that there are certain differences in certain supports while a character like Widow is less likely to deal damage she's more likely to deal picks and some characters are more likely to deal damage as pressure like junkrat but picks are kind of a secondary but it's a little bit more complicated than that this is just a primary level and ultimately you're the damage dealer you're the pick and play maker and that's what a DPS is last up is support now supports are meant to support your team and heal and I want you to notice how I don't call a support A Healer and I also don't say their job is is to heal it's very easy to get into that rut with a support where you think your job is only to heal your team and while that definitely is an important part of being a supporter there's so many other things that you could do to help your team whether it's damaging enemies yourself or setting up optimal situations where your team can capitalize on a huge opportunity it's also damage boosting your team potentially or trying to make a cc play yourself there's so many different things that a support can do to not only help your team but make solo impact that calling a support just a Healer or reducing a support's job to only being a Healer doesn't paint the whole picture of course I can have separate videos breaking down the tank the DPS and the support roles in detail and exactly how you should play them if you're interested let me know down below I also want to note that just because one role has a job doesn't mean that there is an overlap with other characters and overlap within the roles for instance a tank's job is to secure space but honestly a lot of DPS help you secure space as well because they're dealing damage to enemies on The High Ground and on the off angles it allows the tank to push up and that claim space in a very similar way there are other jobs as well like peeling that can be done from tanks DPS and supporting roles which peeling is just going back and helping an ally get out of danger that could be in the form of healing or in the form of protection or damage dealing to get the Target off of your ally there's a lot of overlap within the roles and it's important to not think about them too linearly or you'll put yourself in a trap where you only think characters are supposed to do this one thing and you get mad if they don't do that one thing which is another thing we got to talk about later on in the video now for True beginners when you're starting OverWatch 2 if you're playing it for the first time I highly recommend you trying every role and every character at least a little bit now when you're really trying to improve You're Gonna Want to buckle it and specialize playing a select number of characters in each role or just playing a select number of characters in a specific role but that's more for players that are really trying to improve very specifically in general when you're starting it's better to just have fun with it try to learn everything you can try out everything you can and don't feel any pressure to try to improve all at once and honestly you're gonna have to learn what every single character does at least somewhat if you're ever gonna be truly competitive next up let's talk about maps and modes now OverWatch has many diverse Maps where you'll need to slowly learn the flank Roots High Ground perches and health pack spawns You're Gonna Learn these with time and repetition playing the maps so don't feel like you have to learn them all at once typically after playing a map for a certain amount of time it will become second nature to you now I will go over an advanced positioning guide in the future so that you know how to properly route and properly fight around many of the very difficult maps to play and in the most efficient way but I can't get into that in this beginner's guide now OverWatch has four primary modes koth which is King of the Hill basically there's a point where if you clear all enemies off of it when the point activates you capture that point a timer takes up all the way to a hundred and if you clear the enemy completely off the point by the time it ticks all the way through you're gonna get that map and cough is typically three Maps where you try to get best two out of three next off is escort or payload where you're gonna run a payload all the way throughout the map the certain checkpoints where if you get your team to these checkpoints you're gonna respond at a further up location and of course the enemies spawns are gonna move as well if enemies are touching the escort or the payload you're not going to be able to progress so you have to fight them off of it to proceed the cart and then you swap sides to see who could do it faster and if there's extra time you run it again until there's no more time left and the furthest team wins next up is hybrid which is an objective that you have to capture and open first in a way where it's a set location and then a payload opens up and then you have to run a payload the rest of the way through it's kind of like a combination of a cloth and payload or a 2cp and a payload don't worry about 2cp though because that got replaced by push and pushes the new mode where you're literally pushing a bot along a single track if your team controls the bot the bot pushes in One Direction and if the enemy team controls the bot it pushes back towards your spawn there's a timer and if you run at a time it goes into overtime where the team that pushes it the furthest just has to clear the enemy completely off of it in order to win but if the enemy that is losing somehow manages to win enough fights to push it all the way back further towards the enemy spawn they will win so a pretty exciting new addition now while all of that seems a little bit complicated the most important thing that you need to understand is that every single one of these modes actually center around one objective not all these objectives just one and that's the team fight a team fight is the overall fight between 5v5 think of it as full fighting of a group killing all the enemies and sending them to spawn and then capturing the objective is the correct General strategy energy regardless of the mode now that being said there needs to be a balance made between fighting the enemy and contesting the objectives but as a general takeaway if you win the fight but the enemy captures the objective fully it doesn't matter you lost but if you capture the objective temporarily only to die and get wiped it could mean a much bigger loss in points time or objectives and it would have been better to actually fight the enemy rather than fight for the objective now let's move on to some more General game info now headshots are gonna have a special sound and for characters that can headshot which is most precision based weapons and most hitskin weapons it's gonna deal double damage now some characters actually just go against that rule like Widowmaker does 2.5 times the damage but for the most part it's double and when I specify projectile and hit scan weapons certain types of fire like beam fire for instance will not headshot so just keep that in mind now as far as team composition is concerned we're definitely working on some older data from OverWatch 1 and traditional styles of thinking but I'll give you three really easy ones dive which the idea is sending your entire team to jump an isolated Target and kill them very quickly with burst damage before moving on to the rest of the comp think of it like surgically targeting one thing and then the composition falls apart and that's how you get kill after kill after kill next up is brawl where you're trying to literally run at the Enemy Fight them close range or mid-range where you're really getting into the action and really trying to find either picks or overwhelm the enemy and there's certain instances where this is a great strategy and then the last one is a pick oriented strategy or a strategy centering around snipers trying to see key pickups and get opportunity to get a pick on the enemy get that numbers advantage and then press that Advantage but these are kind of compositions at a basic level next up we do got to talk about the difference between armor health and shields armor is going to be an orange is brown hell is going to be red and shields is going to be a light blue now armor reduces damage by 30 percent flat but if you have even a little bit of armor the entire chunk of damage if it's dealt in one chunk that 30 reduction is going to be applied so let's say an enemy has 200 health and 50 armor if they still have armor remaining then any damage dealt to them will have a 30 damage reduction and if they have no armor left you're gonna do the full amount of damage but if they have 201 Health one of which being armor and they take a giant chunk of a hundred the 30 reduction is going to be applied to that whole 100 meaning that it's far better for you to break someone's armor first before hitting them with a giant chunk of damage if that is relevant to your situation now health is in the red and takes damage as normal but if your support it will passively heal and there's Shields which is blue that will heal after two seconds 30 Shield HP per second next up we gotta talk about competitive ranked and and I know many of you will want to jump right into rank to see how you stack up now if you're someone who's already played OverWatch and you're on the same account you can jump right into competitive have at it but if you're new to OverWatch for the first time you will have to unlock competitive after 50 wins and I know that seems like a ton but I promise you if you're truly new you will only have enough time to barely try each character before you unlock rank so it's not really that big of a deal you're gonna have a blast just enjoy the game before you enter the nightmare that is ranked now there are ranks bronze silver gold Platt Diamond masters Grand Master and top 500 and they're doing it a little bit differently than they did it in OverWatch one each rank will have five divisions five being low one being high and top 500 is gonna have no divisions now you're no longer gonna see your number but you're going to have your division number instead and keep in mind it's about 100 Sr range now after seven wins or 20 losses is you will get a competitive update showing your new ranked Division if you have moved into a new one you will be unranked until you get your first competitive update so when you start playing you need seven wins or 20 losses before you even know where you're gonna Place AKA no more placements anymore now what this means is that you could hypothetically move visually reflected like if you won seven straight you could jump up two divisions and if you lost 20 straight you could fall down like five divisions so pretty scary stuff now there's no MMR reset from OverWatch 1 meaning your MMR will carry over somewhat and you will get placed slightly lower than you were previously in the game now they are imagining you to potentially be moved around depending on how recently you've played or if you played the OverWatch 2 Beta so you're more likely to move around at the start even if it's carrying over your MMR if you're severely over performing for instance or underperforming hopefully not now there is skill Decay from OverWatch 1 to OverWatch 2 but the system will move you quicker if you are returning and playing well now each team now has a scoreboard and no more metal system this lets you see stats like kills deaths damages healing and a lot more I would suggest though that you don't directly compare these to your counterparts as different DPS Heroes deal differently and different supports provide value not necessarily centering around healing so for instance there are some healers that heal a lot more and some healers support a lot more and some DPS Heroes like Widowmaker won't necessarily have gold damage even if they're fragging out because they deal all their damage in a burst rather than consistently outputting damage so it's good information to know these things and it's good it's transparent but don't use this information unjustly to be toxic especially if your reasoning doesn't make logical sense like a junk rat complaining to a widow that the junker has gold damage obviously you would let's talk about some of the key changes from OverWatch 1 to OverWatch 2 just as a sum up and some new additional information so remember there's five characters now instead of six so kills are gonna have more impact and you are going to have more Solo Carry potential but you're still gonna be better off working with your team and trying to coordinate rather than trying to do things all by yourself all the time now you are being changed down to one tank which for you tank players are definitely going to need some adjusting but I do think that you're going to be pleasantly surprised by how powerful the tanks feel and how fun a lot of the reworks are on top of that roll passives change the game huge and it fundamentally changes how a lot of characters are gonna play for instance Genji is all of a sudden incredibly powerful because after he dashes in and gets that kill not only does he get his dash off cooldown he gets that 25 speed increase and fast reload and that's just nuts like the momentum is crazy and that's just one example of many now those of you who have played OverWatch one especially if you played it back in the goat Sarah or around that time and before this OverWatch is gonna feel a lot more fraggy it's gonna feel a lot less like a MOBA in that there's less spam and there's less ability grind and attrition and more pick potential fast engagements and sporadic fights a little bit bit different than it was before with less emphasis on CC and more emphasis on skill based abilities this game also has a different philosophy where it's dramatically stepping away from having characters that just counter completely other characters and instead having soft counters where every character has characters that are decent against them but that doesn't mean that you have to swap if that character is in the game like it was before you add that to the fact that you get a 30 refund on your ultimate if you swap characters means that you are more incentivized to swap characters but it's in a more positive way like here's what you get if you swap not this character completely makes you do nothing you have to swap you see it's a little different if you haven't played OverWatch since OverWatch 1 every single character is changed in some way because of the passives but some characters are changed way more than others like doomfist for instance who has been moved from the DPS roll to the tank roll and plays entirely different but also similar it's actually kind of interesting and there's a ton of characters that have changed in very unique ways so don't expect every character to be identical to what you remember now let's actually jump into some quick tips and tricks for beginners so the first thing is working together in a 5v5 game working together is one of the most important things and I know doing it with complete randoms is difficult but duoing or trioing and setting up with your immediate team is one of the best ways to get more guaranteed value imagine three people versus one instead of 1v1 1v1 1v1 it's a lot better right on top of that as a general rule of thumb push when you have advantage and Retreat when you have disadvantage it seems simple but if you notice kills are happening in the top right on your side it's time to push the hell in another thing that you need to understand is the concept of respawn Advantage knowing where the enemy is respawning versus you and that will better help you understand what trades are favorable if you have a better respawn than the enemy like it's much closer let's say it's half the distance if you trade with an enemy you'll be back there at that same spot before the enemy is even close which if you just have to capture one objective playing to get trades might actually be better or not being afraid of potentially dying however if you're in a situation where you're very far away you have to think about how you're using your life because if you die you're not going to be back in time to help your team again so it's a little bit different of a situation of course the number one thing that you've got to make sure that you don't do is you never die for free and what I mean is dying without getting any value if you didn't die while either setting up a kill saving an ally killing an enemy making a play then you didn't do enough to justify your life and you need to look at what caused you to die in the first place don't look outwardly at what your teammates are doing look inwardly where were you sitting how are you playing did you hit or miss a shot these are the ways in which you can improve yourself by really asking if you got enough value out of your life and what you can really do next time time to prevent that death or get more impact another thing that you need to understand is that tier lists are incredibly overrated there's a huge skilled Gap in OverWatch meaning that if you're skilled enough you can make nearly any character work unless you're at the highest of skill levels like in Grand Master or probably top 500 maybe not even there you could probably get whatever you want to work that doesn't mean you don't know the meta and that doesn't mean that you don't take note of what these tier lists are saying but don't treat them like that at the end-all be-all and don't not play a character because your favorite streamer says it's bad and don't play a character that you don't like just because you think that an S tier character is going to get you free wins it's not now the last tip I want to give to you is leave your ego at the door I know it's really easy to blame your teammates many of you might be playing OverWatch for the first time and you've never played a game where you not only have teammates but you have teammates that all do very different things in a shooter and you have to rely on them to do those things and it can get pretty frustrating at times I understand but the only thing that you can do to truly improve is hold yourself accountable for what you can do and the impact that you make don't just blame everyone else because truly the only person that you're hurting is yourself because the only person that won't improve if you do that is you now the last thing that you need to really take home is that OverWatch is a hard freaking game there are gods of other shooters that come to OverWatch and they never really get that high rank OverWatch demands a ton from you there's a ton of knowledge of the characters their abilities and the maps and on top of that OverWatch could be very mechanically demanding you shoot and move and everyone's moving so fast there's no slow or recoil or shot in accuracy also game knowledge can be very demanding like positioning and when to pressure and when to push and when to retreat and teammate awareness and coordination there's so many different things to learn it's important not to be too hard on yourself to learn this stuff so quickly now there is a unique beauty in OverWatch where if you are someone that has played other games whether they're non-shooter like a mobile or maybe even an MMO or just completely different games entirely you can find what you like to do and your strengths and you can find that into OverWatch whether you're finding a role or a character that fits those strengths and you can even improve and adapt your strengths to become good at other characters as well that might be outside of your box OverWatch could be that beautiful stepping stone where I've seen League of Legends players for instance find a character that really fits them slowly overcome many of their weaknesses mechanically and then eventually they become a god tier FPS player through OverWatch as sort of a stepping stone into the FPS World which is really cool to think of now also when you're starting think of not only what you're good at but what you want to play there's no reason to put yourself in a box and if you want to Rebrand yourself as a god tier Widowmaker there's no one that can tell you you can't and let's say in OverWatch one you were like a hardcore support player and you always wanted to be a DPS man you can do whatever you want you can lie walk in that Genji no one will say a damn thing and of course I'm gonna be doing a Genji guide so if you want to master that character I got you covered but let me know if you found this helpful I definitely want to push out more guys at other entertaining OverWatch content so if you like it please smash that like subscribe and let me know what you want to see down below thank you so much for coming by I absolutely love each and every one of you and I'll see you next time
