we think that we know every ship in the rebel fleet but the original trilogy actually has a number of completely unexplored ships check out my other video on the topic because I've extrapolated a few of these based on extensive research and my own artistic sensibilities but there are still more to cover this time around I tackled this ship from The Empire Strikes Back and I'll take you through the process of turning this indistinct blob into a fully functional starship now from the on-screen blob we could extrapolate our own shape or retcon it into some variety of numidian shuttle or something but actually the original shooting miniature for the ship still exists which shows us exactly what this ship is supposed to look like and I'll just say I think it's pretty hideous I can only give you a sketch of what I saw but I assure you it's quite accurate the thing is a slapdash kit bash of all sorts of disparate parts airplanes racecars a truck a British patrol boat it's a miracle that it looks like a spaceship at all but the Star Wars is no stranger to strange ship designs after all this thing shares a shot with the Nebula on B and G r75 transport now originally I was gonna adapt this ship pretty much verbatim but as I worked I got increasingly disenchanted with the design it's unbalanced and it's strangely asymmetrical and slowly I found myself reworking and replacing elements the original ship was created only as a visual filler and didn't even appear as a uniquely shot element in the film that is it looks like it's a cutout photograph glued to a pane of glass and I thought it would be fun to bring some additional love to the table to interpret this ship into something that feels intentionally designed rather than quickly assembled out of the spare parts been looking at the ship now I felt that it lacked balance and while a lot of that could be visually fixed by flipping the design I figured the ship was flying upright in the film and I thought of alternatives adding a ventral fin fit the ticket perfectly and suddenly this clunky underwhelming design became something I could really imagine in a starring role from here it was just a matter of details this area here is actually a deep depression it's the open roof of the patrol boat that the part is based on and from an early point I really wanted to adapt this space into a hangar bay unfortunately the orientation wasn't quite right but I made it work and I scaled the ship so that it could hold at least a few fighters inside and thus the g58 transport was born and I've come up with a little backstory for it the g58 was originally designed to specialize in the transport of hazardous radioactive materials usually this sort of dangerous job would be relegated to droids but the G 58 s robust radiation control system was deemed effective enough to keep organic occupants within safe levels of exposure the two large fins act as radiators for the ships cargo hold in carry radiation harmlessly away from the ship considering it was a vessel found on the civilian market that g58 had unusually strong armor and shields as every precautionary measure had been taken to ensure that nothing could penetrate the transports cargo hold and potentially scattered dangerous material across an entire star system these safety measures made the g58 ideal for wartime conversion as it required relatively few modifications to engage military grade vessels this particular g58 named the queen mola was donated to the war effort by a small business owner who was put out of a job when he refused to join the Imperial backed mining guild it was soon retrofitted with heavy laser cannons and anti Fighter quad laser turrets and a half of its cargo bay was converted into a space of vision hangar system holding a total of six a wing interceptors the remaining half of the cargo bay was largely converted into the service space and fuel storage necessary to field half a squadron of fighters consequently the Queen mola typically operated as support for fleets with otherwise sparse fighter support such as this one which consisted of largely undefended gr 75 transports as well as vulnerable tanker ships and utility vessels I absolutely loved bringing light to these neglected ships of the rebel fleet and there are still a few more to tackle in both the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi if you have suggestions for ships I should look at or if you want me to flesh out in more detail ships I've already done let me know researching modeling and rendering these ships takes a lot of time and on their own these are not particularly sustainable videos to produce so if you want to see more videos like this and want to support me and help the channel continue to grow it would be awesome if you considered supporting me on patreon just a tiny bit there goes a long way to all of you thank you so much for watching and I'll see you next time
