don't mind the updates i'm just like super passionate about the store that we have okay so without further ado let's get right into this video first i'm going to talk about the babadook movie the babadook is an australian horror movie that came out in 2014 about a single mother that is plagued by the violent death of her husband while also battling with her son's fear of a monster called the babadook lurking in the house i remember when this movie first came out in 2014 every single person around me and on the internet was saying it was the scariest movie they had ever seen i remember kids everywhere becoming so terrified of this fictional monster even the director of the exorcist movie which is also said to be like one of the scariest movies of all time the director said and i quote it was the most terrifying movie that he had ever seen so that's definitely saying something so of course when i found all of this out i went to watch it and yes it's definitely an amazing movie if you want to feel completely unsettled and freaked out it's the movie for you and as you know i love doing this series looking at horror movies and looking at the real like truths behind them like where the inspiration actually came from and the babadook is no exception by the way the babadook's chant is literally like that's the scary noise he makes of course i don't make it that scary but it's scary in the movie alright so let's talk about how the babadook is summoned in the movie because he comes from a children's book the babadook appears as a towering shadowy boogeyman wearing a black coat and hat with long claw-like hands and a pale frightening face the spectre is almost completely shrouded in shadow and also could take the form of everyday objects there's this one scene where the mother sees a coat and hat hanging in the basement of her house and it looks just like him and the babadook haunts whoever reads its poem and hides inside a pop-up book that mysteriously appears in random homes and basically as its prey becomes more and more frightened the babadook then becomes more and more monstrous so it almost sort of feeds off of your fear so when this single mother in the movie reads this book to her son samuel they both become increasingly paranoid that this monster is now lurking in their house so here's how the book goes because i think if you haven't seen the movie it's important to like know how this thing comes about if it's in a word or it's in a look you can't get rid of the babadook if you're a really clever one and you know what it is to see then you can make friends with a special one a friend of you and me a rumbling sound then three sharp knocks that's when you'll know that he's around you'll see him if you look this is what he wears on top he's funny don't you think see him in your room at night and you won't sleep a wink i'll soon take off my funny disguise take heed of what you've read and once you see what's underneath you're going to wish that you were dead i'll wager with you i'll make you a bet the more you deny the stronger i get you start to change when i get in the babadook growing right under your skin come see what's underneath did i just awaken the babadook in my house so it's obvious that it's a very strange book to read to a child because especially the illustrations are very creepy and in the movie as the mother is reading samuel this book he's literally screaming and crying like that's how afraid he is so eventually like i said the mother becomes so paranoid that she tries to destroy the book but to her horror after she gets rid of it the book shows up at her front door the following day totally intact and with the book there's a poem and the poem tells her that the more she resists it the more it will haunt her so she begins going insane eventually the babadook possesses her and she ends up doing some pretty horrible things you would have to watch the movie to find out but in the end you find out that the babadook symbolizes grief because as you know she lost her husband and the babadook entering their house is supposed to be the darkness of her grief and hurting and there's a lot of symbolism with it so let's talk about the true story and also the inspirations behind the movie so apparently the director her name is jennifer kent she had this best friend who had a son that said he was being plagued by an imaginary monster in his house and his mother often had to pretend to talk to this monster to calm his concerns like she would go like under his bed or in his closet and be like excuse me monster can you not bother my son tonight he's trying to sleep like she had to talk to it in front of her son so her son thought that it would be okay but the little boy was so sure that this monster was living in his house that his imagination just spiraled out of control and it was really affecting the household with him and his mother living there things got stressful things got paranoid so jennifer kent was hearing all these stories from her best friend and she thought that it would be an amazing movie concept so let's also talk about the inspiration for the design of the babadook because this monster has a very distinctive look a man named lon chaney actually inspired the design of this monster he was a silent film actor remembered for bringing some of the most terrifying early film monsters to life for example he portrayed the original phantom of the opera he portrayed the hunchback of notre dame and the specific role that inspired the visual look of the babadook came from one of his films called london after midnight and cheney's hulking shoulders mass of hair and tall top hat looked shockingly similar to the infamous babadook now let's talk about the name of the babadook because also this is a really strange name it's a very unforgettable name and it's so weird and specific that it almost sounds like it came from the mind of a child it sort of has this like gibberish feel to it now the specific name origins are unknown but apparently babadook is a word in hebrew which means he is coming for sure which is actually really creepy now there's no proof that that is what jennifer kent had in mind when she came up with this name but if you look at the meaning in hebrew it is sort of unsettling so there's actually a real life legend that the babadook was also inspired by and this is a legend of a creature called baba roga and this creepy legend and creature comes from serbia and babaroga literally translates to old woman with horns it is said that she spends her time finding children and putting them in a sack and bringing them to her cave and eating them or sometimes instead of just putting them into her sack she will literally pull children through small holes in the ceiling which is creepy so if you see a crack in your ceiling she might just reach down and pull you through it and like most boogeyman stories babaroga is mostly used as a tool for parents to try and scare their children into good behavior such as ensuring they go to bed on time respecting their elders etc but i did think it was interesting to see the actual like legendary creature that the babadook was inspired by even though they don't look that similar right anyway so guys that is the end of today's video if you want me to continue doing this series talking about horror movies and the true stories or inspirations behind them give this video a thumbs up and let me know and don't forget if you would like the new crescent moon plushie i have linked it down below but i hope you guys have an awesome rest of your day and i will see you in my next video [Music] [Applause] so [Music] so [Music] you
