and the Oscar goes to Renee Zellweger Renee Zellweger Renee Zellweger after taking a massive break Renee Zellweger made the greatest Hollywood comeback of all time she's finally back in our lives and clearly she's here to stay she gave an award-winning performance as Judy Garland in the movie Judy and much like judy renee is sadly no stranger to adversity and heartache in Hollywood how did Renee Zellweger go from English Lit major to an award-winning actress well it all started on April 25th 1969 in Katy Texas where she was born by the time Renee was in high school she took an interest in acting when she was working on the drama club when she went to the University of Texas in Austin she was leaning more toward a career as a journalist so she chose to study English literature but the acting bug resurfaced so she took an acting class at the University as well after graduation Renee realized that her big Hollywood dream wouldn't happen overnight so she decided to stay in Houston at the time an audition for roles there instead it wasn't long before she starred in the box-office hit Jerry Maguire I will go with you according to Renee the whole experience was like a real-life fairy tale she told manatee fair it was a pivotal moment not just professionally but for me personally but although she's a major household name now Renee is still very private about her life by now anyone who's anyone in Hollywood is on Instagram even those who claimed they would never join insta and yes we're looking at you Jennifer Aniston but Renee is still a no-show on the platform and it definitely has a lot to do with the way she was raised her parents led very private lives the actress believes that our generation is the last to have some expectation of privacy my parents are very private people and we didn't talk about family things out in public and I just feel uncomfortable with it but that isn't the only thing that our parents who immigrated from Switzerland taught her Renee's father came from Switzerland and her mother from Norway Renee's father worked as a mechanical engineer while her mother was a nurse and Midwife who eventually moved to Texas after a horrible childhood in Norway during World War two although Renee herself has never experienced what her mother went through she told people that she recalled visiting a World War two Museum in New Orleans as soon as she walked in her mother started pointing to the hand-grenades behind glass cases and reminisce about playing with those as a child Rene believes that she and her brother Drew benefited from the values that her mother learned from her difficult childhood experience being the child of immigrant parents Rene is well aware of the tense political climate regarding immigration in the United States but she's still hopeful that a better future is coming she still thinks her life story as a dream come true and she's definitely not wrong she told Vanity Fair I'm the American dream at first all Rene wanted was to make a name for herself in Hollywood in 1993 her wish came true when she landed an uncredited role in dazed and confused but that was only the beginning after starring alongside Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire in 1996 the beloved Texas actress achieved a high ranking status in Hollywood society then came the blockbuster hit Bridget Jones's Diary in 2001 which not only turned her into an icon but also earned her a first Oscar nomination the film was followed by the 2004 sequel Bridget Jones the Edge of Reason and then came another sequel in 2016 called Bridget Jones's baby and although Rene has no idea if there will be a fourth film in the franchise she's certainly open to reprising her role as Bridget if the opportunity arises she certainly owes a lot to her quirky on-screen character which helped her break out of her shell and embrace fame but then as it often happens the pressure of being famous started taking a toll on the young actress Rene was living in the limelight a lot more than in the real world which ultimately forced her to take a break from Hollywood one day she simply seemed to vanish Rene is as down-to-earth as it gets and that's one of the secrets to her success the other is the fact that she believes that not playing seductive roles is what cemented her career in Hollywood but when she was first starting out she had a lot to learn about the industry so she accepted all kinds of roles she landed about four roles that required her to play a one-night stand the other woman or as she described it herself the girl with the cutoff shorts [Music] but after playing those characters Rene realized she was done playing those roles if she hadn't she feared that this would have taken her on a path that would have been impossible to steer away from so instead she opted for portraying characters that women could relate to and even gained about 30 pounds for Bridget Jones's Diary to prove it and although she lost the weight she was comfortable gaining it back for the 2004 sequel she didn't want to have to stop being an actress later down the line because she couldn't fit into a pair of cut-offs Rene's career was at an all-time high and while she had two men fighting for her love in the Bridget Jones saga the actress was dealing with the kind of epic heartbreak that someone like Judy Garland could have related to Renee met grammy-nominated country singer Kenny Chesney at NBC's concert of hope in 2005 it was love at first sight for Renee so much so that the actress wanted to be introduced to him real bad Kenny heard that the lovely actress intended to pass him a note hoping to meet him so after the telethon ended he approached her and the two of them hit it off right away by April of the same year the two of them went public with their relationship when Renee walked onstage during one of his concerts and gave him a kiss and a margarita and then just over a week after that they got married in the Virgin Islands but only four months after their wedding Renee filed for an annulment claiming fraud as the reason for the break-up it wasn't until 2010 that Chesney told Oprah Winfrey that he wasn't ready for marriage and he panicked which is why their union ended the only fraud that was committed was me thinking that I knew what it was like that that I really understood what it was like to be married not really didn't but marriage wasn't the only thing that had rocked Rene's personal life in 2010 the pressure of living under a microscope started affecting her mental health that's when Renee decided to take a break from it all it's not so much a complaint it's just not natural and I like to just love that that no one could have imagined that her time away from the cameras would end up lasting 6 long years in the blink of an eye the talented actress went from being unknown to being pretty much everywhere once you get your big break it's pretty hard to stop so Renee kept going and going she received her first Academy Award nomination for her role in Bridget Jones's Diary in 2001 her second Oscar nominated all came after her performance in the musical Chicago in 2002 where she played Roxie Hart but her portrayal of Ruby Foos in Cold Mountain in 2003 won her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress I am overwhelmed I am overwhelmed and in 2020 she won an Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Judy Garland Judy but that huge win almost didn't happen in 2010 Renae felt really insecure about some bad reviews she got for the film case 39 which made her doubt herself Judy Garland would have definitely sympathized as she too struggled with insecurities herself life had simply become too hectic she later told vulture I wasn't healthy I wasn't taking care of myself I was the last thing on my list of priorities Renae was having a hard time separating her personal life from her public persona she felt she was always acting even after the director yelled cut like most of her fellow actors she was playing a role 24/7 for the media and her fans unfortunately she had kept up the act for so long that she forgot how to separate the famous Hollywood actress from who she really was so she was only living a fraction of her life as her true self and it wasn't healthy I just felt like a phony and I felt like I could need to stop she told New York magazine my therapist recognized that I spent 99% of my life as the public persona and just a microscopic crumb of a fraction in my real life in order to fix this her therapist helped her focus on her own health and happiness and the only way to get this was by taking a much-needed break and it worked her time away from Hollywood helped her detox from it all not only that but renee is in control and stronger than ever she told vulture I had a good five-year period when I was joyful and in any chapter that no one was even aware of but when she briefly returned to the spotlight she was met with a lot of criticism about her appearance and it really hurt her in 2014 Renee took a brief break from her time alone but her return to the spotlight made her wish she had stayed away it all started when Renee made an appearance at the Elle women in Hollywood Awards people noticed she had undergone a major transformation as many reporters had a hard time recognizing the actress as soon as the media laid eyes on Renee all they could focus on was how different she looked the rumor mill speculated that she'd gotten plastic surgery to a lot of folks she didn't look anything like her former self even doctors weighed in about the type of procedures she may have had done to change her face this forced renee to break her silence and speak with People magazine she called the rumors silly and later wrote an op-ed for the Huffington Post where she said not that it's anyone's business but I did not make a decision to alter my face and have surgery on my eyes she also told vulture that the level of scrutiny she sustained was so overwhelming that she had to set the record straight like Judy Garland she isn't the kind of actress that wants to become something she isn't an empowered Renee returned from her self-imposed Hollywood exile in 2016 to play Loretta in the whole truth that same year she reprised her role as Bridget in Bridget Jones's baby she even proved that she wasn't afraid of taking on the small screen by playing Anna Montgomery in the 2019 Netflix series what if but to get ready for her role in judy renee took an emotional journey to discover who judy garland was this included listening to her music every day and watching footage of her before she went to bed the film takes place during 1968 a year before Judy's untimely passing it was a very turbulent year for the late actress something renee could definitely relate to Judy was dealing with ongoing battles with managers and stressful bargains with ex-husband Sidney left and future fifth husband Nicky Dean Renee wanted to pay true homage to what the star was going through at that time so she studied Judy's voice her mannerisms and the vulnerable moments in her life Renee wanted to embody her every move her prowess and her charisma and all her hard work finally paid off in 2020 she walked on stage wearing a stunning white sequined Armani Prive gown as she accepted her Oscar but she couldn't have done it without the help of two very special people Renee had made it big in Hollywood once again and she had a lot of people to thank in her acceptance speech she mentioned Judy who inspired her to believe in herself she told the audience our heroes unite us they inspire us to find the best in ourselves and like the tragic movie star she never lost hope but there were two people she really wanted to give a shout out to an emotional Renee said my immigrant folks who came here with nothing but each other and a belief in the American dream how about this Rene had always been grateful for her parents sacrifices and everything they taught her along the way she had also thanked them when she won her first Oscar in 2004 the actress believes they provided her with a window to the world and now that the limelight is shining on her she's finally in control Rene will have the freedom to play different roles choose the directors the actors and the project she wants to work with going forward but the actress hasn't just paved a way to success for herself but also to all the aspiring actresses that are sure to follow in her footsteps Judy Garland would definitely be proud do you think Renee's life parallels Judy Garland struggles let us know in the comments below and as always thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe to the taco
