I want my money I save I said no not get out of [Music] here uhoh you went and did it I need that money tonight I've never had pains like this before oh this the worst one I ever had son oh it's the worst one this is a big one I'm dying you get that Elizabeth I'm coming to join you honey one of the most disheartening experiences for someone who has tasted wealth after enduring hardships is the prospect of returning to a life of scarcity this is why many individuals who have risen from impoverished backgrounds work extra hard to ensure they never regress to such unfavorable circumstances unfortunately for comedy Legend red fox renowned for his portrayal of an irritable crude junkman in Sanford and sun he fell victim to the nightmare of many people after leaving this world penniless despite amassing Millions during his iconic lifetime how did red fox go from riches to rags let's delve into the comedian's twisted and sad tale humble beginnings red fox left the world 68 years after his birth on December 9th 1922 he was about two months away from his birthday when he slumped and passed on the set of the popular TV series he was known for on the 11th of October 1991 Fox was christened John Elroy Sanford but like most TV stars and entertainers preferred to go by his stage name red fox which in all honesty kind of stuck more than his actual name in fact many still have no idea what his real name was to this day Fox was an American stand-up comedian and actor who Rose to success with his runchy nightclub act before and during the Civil Rights Movement he quickly became known as the king of the party records as he went on to perform on more than 50 records in his lifetime Fox's most iconic portrayal to date is Fred G Sanford's character on the television show Sanford and Sun however he's also had some pretty interesting roles such as starring in his own show the red fox show in the royal family where he played the husband of delar Ree and grandfather to actor Loren Tate there's a lot to uncover in Fox's story so let's kick off with a little bit of a backstory Fox was raised in Chicago's impoverished South Side he'd been the third child and Son of a union between his father Fred Freddy Sanford and his mother Mary Hughes sadly Leonard the family's second son died shortly after his birth in 1921 Freddy was a lad from Hickman Kentucky who served during World War I in the 823rd company of the US Transportation Corps he worked as an electrician and auto mechanic but sometime after 1930 he left his family and never returned leaving his children to be raised by Mary and her mother growing up was a bit difficult for Fox as the family not only lived in an impoverished vicinity but they were literally poorer than Church mice so much so that Mary had to take on several menial jobs just for them to get by Fox was able to attend ducible high school in Chicago's bronzville neighborhood with future Chicago mayor Harold Washington but he knew he had different dreams from chasing an education and barely getting enough food to eat in a day he'd always had a knack for comedy and at the age of 16 on July 27th 1939 he performed on the major Bose Amateur hour radio show as part of the jump swinging six Fox had Big Dreams of the big city he'd heard about the blinding spotlights and Camera flashes in New York and wanted that for himself too most of all he wanted to establish himself as a comedy icon and help his family out of their desolate neighborhood Fox was undeterred by the long odds of achieving this and this character trait was a major reason for both his successes in life and his losses as you'll find out shortly after sharing his plans with a couple of his friends in the 1940s all three of them decided to Hitch the next train to New York where they believed they'd get a head start on life sadly both of his friends were caught trying to hitch a ride on the train and only Fox made it all the way to New York upon his arrival Fox felt so brand new to City Life as it was all so different from what he'd grown used to it took a while to get used to especially because he had no money and had to perform tasks like dishwashing at Jimmy's Chicken Shack in Harlem to make some money it was while dishwashing that he met and became friends with a fellow worker Malcolm little who would later become known as Malcolm X the duo quickly became Inseparable as they bonded over their shared impoverished background and future Ambitions it also helped that both men had distinct reddish hair so while Fox was nicknamed Chicago Red Malcolm was known as Detroit Red their friendship soon culminated into something a little less carefree as they soon began to deal with illegal substances chase women and commit Petty crimes together together interestingly in Malcolm's autobiography he refers to Fox as the funniest dishwasher on this Earth which is honestly not a stretch considering to evade drafting during World War II Fox gobbled down half a bar of soap before his physical resulting in heart palpitations that ensured he didn't get selected from a young age Fox embodied the mischievous Persona he would later portray on stage and television often finding himself in trouble he once got expelled from school for retaliating against a teacher who had thrown a book at him after just one year of high school he dropped out to form a washtub band with Lamont Oley and Steve tremell the two friends with whom he left home they formed a group called The Bon bonds and performed on New York City street corners and in subways until they disbanded during World War II during those challenging years Fox's primary concern was mere survival after honing his craft in East Coast nightclubs Fox ventured to Hollywood in the 1950s where he began recording his Club routines by 1960 he graced the stages of Las Vegas signing a lucrative three-year contract guaranteeing him 32 weeks annually at $10,000 per week yet Fox's perceived Pinnacle proved Emeral in 1969 a modest role in the film cotton comes to Harlem caught the eye of Television producers bud yorin and Norman Lear who aimed to replicate the success of All In The Family the beginning of Fox's career Fox had been a member of a band back in Missouri however upon moving to Harlem the band ended up splitting but not before they performed on a national radio show it was here in Harlem that fox got the nickname foxy according to him this was because he was always sharply dressed and was a ladies man well well we'll just have to take his word for it anyway Fox was also surrounded by amazing people who would go on to be some of the most influential black people in the entire world The Shack where he washed dishes also employed the great jazz musician Charlie Parker granting Fox a front row seat to an unimaginable Talent even though moving to New York was a very challenging and terribly unplanned move it was honestly the best decision Fox made as by September 1946 Fox recorded five songs for the seavoy label under the direction of Teddy R after leaving Harlem for Baltimore in 1945 Fox demonstrated his mcing prowess at a club in Baltimore Maryland it was here that he fully embodied his new stage name red fox for him it was a combination of his two nicknames with an extra consonant behind the original spelling of the names and homage to famous baseball player Jimmy Fox whom red was obsessed adorned with his new catchy name and a fresh will to make his Mark in the industry Fox was ready to absolutely body this role thankfully he was approached to record a set of comedy albums in Newark New Jersey and this was where he met Evelyn kerw whom he later married unfortunately the records flopped but Fox wasn't too distraught by this instead he formed an act called Fox and white with fellow comedian Slappy white this time around they found success as the first comedic black duo in the country touring the National chitlin circuit in the late 1940s and early 1950s sadly their Union would not last long as after moving to Los Angeles in 1952 to open for singer Dina Washington their act as well as Fox's marriage broke up La was good it was unfamiliar territory but it was good for Fox and it was good for business here Fox soon became assistant to the radio DJ Johnny Otis through this he got the opportunity to act on Otis's local television show it was here that he also began to explore stand-up comedy as a solo act and soon enough he kickstarted his solo comedy career sadly this was at a time when segregation based on race was very widespread and as a result Fox was restricted from performing in the clubs that were perceived to be mainstream and frequented by white people nonetheless this turned out to be a good thing for Fox as it allowed him the opportunity to experiment with edgier material at least he knew he wouldn't be arrested for breaking obscenity laws surely enough his experiment became a hit and his runchy new act soon became popular in Los Angeles's black clubs in 1955 Fox freshly divorced and ready for a new Union married Betty Jean Harris a singer with whom he recorded a hit Comedy album laugh of the party Fox finds Fame Fox was making quite good recording success and this was thankfully helping his standup career flourish by the early 1960s he was performing at massive clubs in Las Vegas and he even had homes in that City Los Angeles in St Louis in 1964 Fox appeared on the Today show with a censored act and eventually performed on several other nationally televised shows including the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson if there's one thing you should know about The Tonight Show it's that the celebrities invited were often a-listers who had a lot more to gain from being on the show than Johnny Carson himself naturally Fox's Fame began to spread Nationwide due to these appearances and soon enough he became a sensation however it wasn't until his appearance on the television sitcom Sanford and Son that red fox truly achieved Nationwide Fame portraying the lead character fr G Sanford who interestingly shared the same names as his father and eldest brother Fox starred alongside Demon Wilson who played His Son Lamont in this adaptation of the BBC series step toe and Son naming his character Fred G Sanford in honor of his late brother Fox was at Liberty to infuse the role with elements inspired by his own life including naming his onscreen Son Lamont after a former bandmate despite Fox's real age being considerably younger than his character stated age of 65 his vibrant personality and hard partying lifestyle lent authenticity to the role the character also Drew inspiration from Fox's mother Mary who was incredibly known in her Turf for feigning illnesses for attention set in Watts California the sitcom centered around the humorous escapades of the fatherson duo who operated a Junk Salvage store the show became well known for its bold racial humor and candid portrayal of prejudices it is usually said that Sanford and Sun redefined the landscape of black situation comedy Sanford and Son premiered on NBC on January 14th 1972 with Fox's stand-up comedy background allowing him to improvise before the live studio audience resulting in aborus laughter particularly during scenes featuring Sanford's trademark fake heart attacks the show preped for a total of six seasons before concluding with a final episode Broadcast on March 25th 1977 Fox's Stellar performance earned him a Golden Globe and Sanford and Sun concluded its first season as one of the top rated shows on television the sitcom not only broke new ground in terms of humor but also provided a platform for showcasing talented African-American performers by the end of its second season Sanford and Sun ranked second in the ratings throughout its run the show featured several recurring comedic elements Fred's catchphrases such as you big dummy when expressing his frustration with Lamont and his exaggerated fake heart attacks often accompanied by exclamations like this is the big one I'm coming to join you honey directed at his late wife Elizabeth became iconic additionally Fred's complaints about his arthitis to evade work added to the show's humor interestingly Fox leveraged his leading role on Sanford and Son to advocate for job opportunities for acquaintances like leanda pagee Slappy white Gregory Sierra and others following the conclusion of Sanford and Son in 1977 Fox departed to star in a short-lived ABC variety show leading to the cancellation of the NBC series he later reprised his role as Fred G Sanford in the short-lived Revival / spinoff Sanford in 1980 subsequently in 1986 Fox returned to television with the ABC series the red fox show which faced cancellation after 12 episodes due to poor ratings FOX also made guest appearances such as portraying an Obi-Wan Kenobi like character in the Star Wars special of the Donnie and Marie show where he humorously mentioned the planet Sanford at this time Fox had gotten so big that even even Elvis Presley was wowed by him it is widely believed that fox was the only artist Elvis invited to his 1967 wedding at the Aladdin although not much is known about Elvis and Fox's relationship in an interview Fox admitted that he had indeed met with Elvis and had confronted him about a rumor that was brewing back then the rumor gave a definitive reason as to why most black people did not like Elvis at the time which was that Elvis had once said that the only only thing black people were good for was to shine his shoes and buy his records as one would expect this made the black community furious with Elvis however when asked about the validity of this news by Fox Elvis allegedly denied it saying that he didn't remember ever making a statement like that anyway the relationship between the duo didn't seem very groundbreaking but Elvis did give Fox a very expensive gift now the reason for the gift is relatively unknown but it had to be really good considering it was a customized Elvis Presley watch a rare collector's item long before the iconic TCB necklaces became synonymous with Elvis Presley's Inner Circle there existed custommade Elvis Presley watches reserved for a select few in his closest Circle these exclusive time pieces were gifted to family members friends trusted staff bandmates and other privileged individuals granting them special access to Elvis's concerts and tours Fox was fortunately among the recipients of these prestigious watches this particular watch presented as a gift from Elvis himself Bears the distinctive design commissioned by the legendary singer from renowned Memphis Jeweler Harry levich in 1969 crafted with a bezel featuring raised circular letters spelling out Elvis Presley this watch is a symbol of exclusivity and PR pres it is estimated that only a limited number between 24 to 50 of these Exquisite watches were ever produced adding to their Rarity and collectibility the premium time piece is a maty tsot model boasting self-winding functionality water resistance a sweeping secondhand and a day date display its stainless steel Underside ensures durability while the Striking brown leather cuff style band adds a touch of Elegance despite its age this watch remains functional and Exhibits minimal signs of wear preserving its value as a coveted collector's item accompanying the watch is a black and white snapshot capturing a momentous occasion red fox posing with the Pressley on their wedding day at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas in 1967 this snapshot serves as a little bit of a reminder of the friendship between Fox and Elvis which culminated in the presentation of this Exquisite time piece sadly Fox lost the watch to an IRS auction after he was riddled with debt moving on in 1989 Fox appeared in the film Harlem Knights written directed produced and starring Eddie Murphy he later enjoyed a Resurgence with the short-lived series The Royal Family co-starring alongside delar re during the late 1970s and early 1980s Fox ventured into business on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood offering a service known as red fox car velvetizer this unique process involved adding a fuzzy velvety texture to the vinyl tops of cars particularly popular among owners of vehicles colloquially referred to as pimp mobils during that era for someone who wasn't exactly money Savvy Fox sure knew how to make money as his success led to lucrative endorsement deals but his biggest problem wasn't making money it was keeping the money he made financial and tax problems there's a common dilemma with some wealthy people they struggle with Wealth Management in the twinkle of an eye it could all be gone in the blink of an eye fortunes can vanish that's why many celebrities opt to enlist the services of financial advisers to oversee their finances however trust issues prevented Fox from delegating financial responsibilities to others having fallen victim to scams early in his career he developed a deep-seated trust that led him to insist on receiving upfront cash for all his deals even on the Sanford Show he made sure to request that he be paid in cash before signing any deals with the company anyway after appearing on so many TV shows and comedy albums Fox had racked up quite a lot of money reportedly he once enjoyed a staggering income of $4 million in a single year however he wasn't exactly very Savvy minded with his wealth and soon enough his extravagant lifestyle and mismanagement of funds swiftly depleted his fortune plus he didn't exactly have the happiest marital home he jumped from woman to woman to the extent that most of his financial woes were a result of multiple divorces Each of which entailed significant financial obligations Fox faced substantial expenses during his divorces including over $150,000 in legal fees while awaiting the dissolution of his marriages following his separation from his second wife Betty Jean in 1974 he was required to make monthly support payments of $10,000 similarly during his separation from his third wife joy in 1979 Fox was also ordered to pay $2,500 a month culminating in a $300,000 divorce settlement in 1981 in 1983 Fox was completely out of money he filed for bankruptcy a process that extended through at least 1989 the Internal Revenue Service IRS was also all up on him for unpaid income taxes which resulted in tax leans totaling 755,000 to 1986 subsequently on November 28th 1989 the IRS seized Fox's home in Las Vegas and seven Vehicles including notable items like a 1927 model T and A vesa motor scooter in an effort to settle his tax debt which had rocketed to nearly $1 million including penalties and interest agents also confiscated cash firearms and other possessions leaving Fox with minimal belongings seeking help and perhaps some sympathy he lamented the dehumanizing treatment by the IRS sharing how they stripped him of personal items including jewelry and cash he'd been so deep in debt that at the time of his passing in 1991 Fox reportedly owed over $3.6 million in unpaid taxes depicting the extent of his financial downfall Fox had always shared how he was perceived to be a ladies man well he took it very seriously as he was constantly in and out of marriages like it was going out of style on July 5th 1956 Fox tied the knot with Betty Jean Harris a showgirl and Dancer who later became known as leanda P's TV rival Aunt Esther on Sanford and Son they had crossed paths at a nightclub where they both performed following their agreement Betty Jean left her show business career behind to become a dedicated Homemaker she'd had a daughter from a previous relationship and fox was happy to formally adopt her she was a 9-year-old named de braa who then took on the surname Fox Betty Jean managed the majority of Fox's business Endeavors including red fox Enterprises which oversaw a chain of record stores in Los Angeles however their marriage hit Rocky ground in 1974 due to Fox's infidelity after 18 years together Fox initiated divorce proceedings in May 1974 citing irreconcilable differences he also secured a restraining order against Betty prohibiting her from tampering with their Assets in Las Vegas and she was required to return $110,000 withdrawn from their bank accounts while the relationship between him and DEA is a little Unknown People noted that he was surprisingly absent from her wedding in 1975 following the AIT Fox once again exchanged vows with his third spouse Joy yun chi Chung at the Thunderbird Hotel in Las Vegas on December 31st 1976 he had met Joey who was 20 years his Junior while she worked as a cocktail waitress at the Las Vegas Hilton shortly after arriving from Korea however their Union soured leading to Fox filing for divorce in October 1979 after only a couple years of marriage with joy counter suing him for cruelty reflecting on his marital history Fox expressed his disillusionment with marriage stating during their divorce proceedings that I've been married three times and I'm out he emphasized his preference for having children reasoning that the financial aftermath of divorce should benefit Offspring rather than spouses their divorce was eventually finalized in 1981 with Fox agreeing to a $300,000 settlement however the lady's man wasn't satisfied with his failed marriages he wanted to give it another go after all he was supposed to be excellent at keeping a marriage long story short in July 1991 he once again exchanged vows with Kaho Cho from Soul South Korea whom he met at bal's hotel in Casino in Las Vegas despite his prior aversion to marriage following his third divorce Fox disclosed that he chose to marry Cho because of her unwavering support during his legal battles with the IRS he expressed gratitude for her loyalty and joked about his financial status stating that she saw him with a nickel and hopefully she would see him with a dollar and if she did he'd give her 75 cents of it the couple's wedding took place at the little Church of the West in Las Vegas followed by a reception at the hasienda hotel Fox's tragic death just like any other day Fox made his way to the set of his new show the royal family on October 11th 1991 he was really excited about this series and not just because he had lots of debts to settle but this was one show that he'd put so much time effort and energy into but perhaps too much energy Fox's years of hard living had finally caught up with him but it sadly culminated in tragedy when he collapsed on the set of the royal family ironically his character on the show often feigned heart attacks so when Fox himself collapsed those around him initially mistook his collapse for one of his trademark fake heart attacks delaying the urgency of seeking medical assistance his co-stars knew him to be a prankster so this wasn't much of a surpris to them but after noticing he wasn't responding to their laughs and remarks they knew something was up and immediately flew into action however it was a little too late as later that evening Fox succumbed to heart failure at the Queen of Angels Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center at the age of 68 the Fatal incident occurred at 4 10 p.m. during a rehearsal for the networks's the royal family show at a Paramount studi Sound Stage upon collapsing Fox was transported to the hospital albeit a tad bit late as the entire cast and crew were present during the distressing ordeal but hadn't thought of his situation as much of a big deal at first following his passing Fox's remains were transported to Las Vegas for interment Brandon tarov of Paramount Pictures a co-producer of the show praised Fox's talent for bringing laughter to audiences worldwide emphasizing his Swift Ascent to fame with the royal family although Fox is best remembered for his iconic portrayal of Fred G Sanford his involvement in numerous comedy Productions remains a standout achievement in Fox's illustrious career while Fox was also most famous as a comedic actor he enjoyed a lengthy career on the black theater and Cabaret circuit earning the title of the dean of x-rated comedians years before Richard prior and others began tackling social tabos about intimacy race and other sensitive topics Fox was performing in nightclubs and producing 54 party records spoken comedy without music a genre he claimed to have pioneered in 1956 in a 1982 interview he noted that no one expected him to appear on television because of his reputation from the party records as x-rated but that's the kind of humor he enjoyed in his words that was the humor he heard in the ghettos what he was used to they didn't hold back and they didn't want to hear about little boy blue and Cinderella so he gave them what they wanted he let loose the impact of Fox's death on the series slated to resume taping a couple of days after his funeral remained uncertain at the time however news went around that the producers of the show were not exactly sorrowful when informed of Fox's passing and if at all they were it was more so because of what they stood to lose according to sources they were instead more concerned about having to rewrite the show now that one of the lead characters was eternally unavailable nonetheless it didn't stop audiences from celebrating and mourning the icon having entertained audiences for over five decades Fox was renowned for his portrayal of both cantankerous and beloved television characters and for delivering R routines in nightclubs before the television debut of Sanford and Sun Fox was primarily known within the confines of smoke field nightclubs and among purchasers of his numerous explicit recordings rather than by the broader American public following the success of the show Fox's life took a tumultuous turn rising from poverty to wealth then facing bankruptcy and legal issues with the Internal Revenue Service before staging a comeback as a prime time star in the fall in his latest television Venture Fox portrayed Al Royal a retired Atlanta mail carrier whose life is disrupted when his adult daughter moves back home with her three children yet for some observers his character bore a resemblance to the iconic role of the grumpy Fred G Sanford Fox's generosity extended Beyond his onscreen Persona he named his character Fred Sanford in homage to his brother and Drew inspiration from from various individuals he encountered throughout his life Sanford and sun was especially loved because it defied conventional black stereotypes on television and entertained viewers for 5 years on NBC reflecting on the show's impact in a 1973 interview Fox remarked that he was convinced that Sanford and Sun shows middleclass America a lot of what they need to know the show is light-hearted and doesn't drive home a lesson but it can open up people's minds enough for them to see how stupid every kind of prejudice is known for his outspoken nature Fox famously declared in the same interview I don't want no black takeover black power and white power are meaningless I want green money power however the comedian and actor known for his distinctive voice like into coarse sandpaper or the deep growl of a Blues singer was acknowledged for influencing a generation of black comedians who followed in his footsteps Brandon tarov chairman of Paramount Pictures and a co-producer of the show remarked in a statement that fox was gifted with the ability to evoke laughter endearing himself to audiences everywhere in a short span red and his royal family endeared themselves to millions of households and hearts and that all of them at Paramount mourn the loss of such a friend and a talent like no other sadly with Fame and wealth came a sense of under appreciation for Fox and in 19 76 amid a contract dispute he departed NBC for ABC embarking on a comedy variety show slated for the 1977 to 78 season which found little success the Revival attempt with NBC in 1980 proved feudal marking a major decline in Fox's popularity thereafter he returned to Los Angeles and Las Vegas clubs where he retained a devoted following in 1989 Fox once again tested out the movie scene by jumping on a feature alongside Eddie Murphy and Richard prior in the film Harlem Knights although the movie received mixed reviews Fox had been there to support prior during his early career where he offered good inspiration advice and encouragement while Murphy and prior have been likened to Fox for their risque performances the veteran comedian asserted his influence stating that there are no new jokes it's just that they speak a little broader they're Geniuses and I'm dirty we recall that in his later years Fox faced financial hardship leading to a portion of his earnings being allocated to the IRS due to unpaid taxes which eventually resulted in the seizure of his assets red was so penniless that someone else even had to pay for his funeral that person was none other than Eddie Murphy who shared the experience in an interview Eddie recounted the challenging experience stating I buried red fox I literally had to bury red fox Eddie went on to express that he had buried so many people over the years acknowledging the issue of bankruptcy some previously wealthy celebrities usually have to face Eddie shared that he was unsure why for some strange reason a lot of people in Show Business when they die don't have their stuff in order he went on to once again say that he' buried a lot of famous people if we only knew when asked if he served as a paw Bearer Eddie was quick to clarify that he didn't all he had to do was physically pay for their stuff and bury them looking quite emotional he once again shared that for Fox he had to physically pay for his funeral buy his headstone and do everything related to funding the funeral he admitted that he and fox were indeed close and he truly loved him and gave him a shout out in his role in the 2019 film Dolomite is my name throughout his career Fox remained true to his roots in stand-up comedy captivating audiences with his wit and Charisma however he faced setbacks such as arriving late to a Las Vegas performance in 1975 which ultimately led to a disappointing turnout despite the challenges Fox's resilience and dedication to his craft never wavered in the entertainment industry where success often comes with its share of trial and tribulations red Fox's Journey serves as a testament to the resilience of the human Spirit his legacy continues to live on through his Timeless humor inspiring future generations of comedians to fearlessly pursue their passions and leave an indelible mark on the world of Comedy following Fox's death his financial debts left no resources for a proper burial prompting Eddie to intervene Eddie who began his career as a standup Comm comian and his teens Rose to prominence as a cast member on SNL and starred in numerous successful films including 48 Hours Beverly Hills Cop Coming to America Shrek and a variety of other comedies dramas and family films discussing Fox's tax debt Eddie speculated on whether the IRS managed to recover all outstanding dues but suggested that fox might have found satisfaction in passing away before settling his debt to the IRS while Fox is predominantly remembered for his iconic portrayal of Fred G Sanford his career left an indelible mark on American Comedy Fox was among the first black comedians to achieve mainstream success and his unfiltered style helped pave the way for others who tackled edgy material Sanford and Sun's success spurred the creation of several sitcoms featuring predominantly African-American casts providing Fox with a national platform to promote black performers he played a really important role in launching the careers of numerous black comedians including Richard PRI and Bernie Mack and has been cited as a significant influence by luminaries such as Eddie Murphy Chris Rock and Jamie Fox who adopted his surname it might Delight you to know that his hard work and contributions will never be forgotten as he's even commemorated on the St Louis Walk of Fame and the renowned Apollo theat Walk of Fame do you think
