The Tequila Sunrise - which one is better?

[Music] welcome back friends it's anders today we're making a tequila sunrise most people will think that this drink has tequila orange juice and grenadine and i'm actually going to make that but the original one also called a tequila sunrise has different components so i'm going to make one of those kind of forgotten about but i've never had it so i want to try it so i'm going to grab oz we're going to compare the two it'll be great and i have no idea if i'm gonna like them if you're new to the channel hit that subscribe button for more tips tips and recipes and let's go have a tequila sunrise to the bar [Music] the tequila sunrise has been a part of pop culture for many years in 1988 there was a movie called tequila sunrise in 1973 the eagles put out a song called tequila sunrise on their desperado album but it was actually the rolling stones a year earlier in 1972 that popularized the tequila sunrise at the trident bar in sausalito california the story goes that mick jagger went to the bar and ordered a margarita now one of the bartenders it was either bobby lozoff or billy rice both of them are credited for creating this drink they recommended the tequila sunrise made with orange juice and grenadine and mcjagger took their advice and drank it and loved it and then he gave it to the band mates and they loved it so then they went on around the country on their tour ordering it at every stop this was huge if you came up with a cocktail and the rolling stones are going around the country ordering it a year later in 1973 jose cuervo printed the recipe for the tequila sunrise on the back of their bottles but that is not the original tequila sunrise for that we have to back up 30 more years to the late 1930s early 1940s to a man named jean sullet at the arizona biltmore resort and the story goes that he created it for one of his patrons who ordered a refreshing drink they could drink poolside and it was very simple it's just tequila lime juice creme de cassis and topped with soda water nothing like the orange juice grenadine concoction that bobby and billy came up with in the 70s but i think it's fair that we compare them so for the tools i've got my boston shaker [ __ ] hawthorne strainer i've got a bottle opener because i've got a bottle that needs opening and a knife to cut some fruit for garnish i also have a cherry to put on the original tequila sunrise now the booze for the original tequila sunrise you're gonna need reposado tequila creme de cassis lime juice and soda water for the 1970s tequila sunrise we're gonna need blanco tequila orange juice and grenadine the tequilas i'm using are siete legos blanco and reposado the creme de cassis is jules 3a and the grenadine is monen as for the creme de cassis this is the first time i'm using this on the channel and it's really nice it's a black currant liqueur that comes from france now there are a number of different brands out there you can pick your favorite but i would look for one that is a little bit thicker in texture and wants to coat the side of the bottle some of them can be a little thin and i just like a nice good creme de cassis as for the tequilas you could swap these around if you want i'm using the reposado for the original recipe because all the recipes i looked up called specifically for reposado as for the grenadine i'm using monen because i have this bojumbo bottle of grenadine now if you've watched any of my past videos i don't use store-bought grenadine typically in my cocktails but i'm trying to recreate what the rolling stones fell in love with i'm going for that bright red sunrise so that's why i'm using the store-bought grenadine let's build all right the first one being the original tequila sunrise i'm going to build in my shaking tin so let's start with the reposado tequila i'm going to do an ounce and a half of reposado tequila the creme de cassis we're going to go three quarters of an ounce half an ounce of fresh lime juice [Music] and that'll do it we can grab some ice and shake now i'm going to be topping this off with soda water so just a quick shake five to eight seconds that's enough grab a collins glass and fill it with ice pour it right into the collins glass [Music] and then top it with soda water kind of want to pour this lightly so that the soda sits on top [Music] yeah it's just kind of split right in the middle look at that but let's garnish it i'm gonna do a lime wheel and a cherry look at that that is the original tequila sunrise so i'm not going to drink it yet because now we have to build the 1970s tequila sunrise so we're gonna start with the collins glass fill it with ice now two ounces of blanco tequila or silver tequila the recipes that i was looking at said four ounces of orange juice i don't know why i'm gonna measure this but i think you pretty much fill it up with orange juice [Music] so grab your grenadine and i'm gonna do half an ounce sorry i'm thinking i'm thinking maybe i should stir this up just so that the tequila and orange juice are incorporated and then pour down the side of the glass your grenadine it just wants to sink for a garnish i'm gonna do half an orange wheel there we have two tequila sunrises the original and the 1970s i'm going to get my tasting expert i think we should start with the 70s one okay we'll try it [Music] honest opinion um you think about what you just tasted and i'm gonna try it myself [Music] okay okay i will say it doesn't taste bad i don't think it tastes good honestly orange juice is one of my least favorite things to mix with very sweet it's really sweet and then on top of that you're pouring grenadine which is pretty much straight sugar right into that i feel like if we sat down and just drank a bunch of these we'd be hurting the next day i'm hurting right now okay i want to taste this one yeah please it's better it is better it needs something how can we improve that because i think this one is very close to being delicious uh-huh i feel like it could use a little bit more lime but then also like something like angostura bitters what if we did that you want to try it i'll make it yes okay all right tell me what to do let's do an ounce and a half of reposado together ounce and a half okay wow this is kind of a heavy bottle here [Music] half an ounce of the creme de cassis half an ounce of grenadine i just happen to have some homemade here fresh lime juice three quarters of an ounce yeah a little bit more is that good a little bit more let's do a dash of angus syrup bitters right in there good now we add ice and shake 2.0 [Music] it's pretty good that's pretty good the doctored up version tastes the best we like this one the 1930s original version second best the 70s version
