the production companies determine what you do and how you do it you don't do it they build the story [Music] you know it's really funny in vegas if you look at how many reality tv shows but let alone automotive tv shows and me being in vegas for almost three decades 30 years i've built a lot of relationships with automotive community and funny story is uh danny from county cars who has been a friend of mine for a long time and kevin actually you know kevin's partner with the bald head wears glasses in the chopped off shirt him and i used to work out in the gym for years with injury attorney glenn lerner one call that's all i've seen his campaigns all over the country and we were a crew we all used to hang out we were working on cars or gym or riding motorcycles so danny comes to me one day and he's got this old cat he wants me to work on when we had her shop on spring mountain jones in chinatown and he says hey you're never going to believe this you know you know how i go on as a special guest on pawn stars with rick and they bring me as an expert well the production company really liked me and said hey let's shoot a pilot for your cars because you know danny has quite an interesting background his dad um had a dracula show which i wasn't around when that was in vegas because he grew up on the east coast and he had this cool collection of hearse i mean like really weird hurst you know but anyway danny says to me yeah so they want me to do this show do you have any interest in it and i said not really and so who's the cast and he said well you know kevin he's my partner so kevin's gonna be in the show and you know ryan my painter and horny mike wasn't around at the time and then there was rolly and what's funny is a rolly from europe moved to america with nothing had a van a really shitty van at that and would sleep in his van he was like a mobile car wash guy and he would just kind of like cling on to danny and hang around and danny felt kind of bad for him see that's fine you can watch my bikes in my cars and one day rolly comes up to me all excited and says i sign an agreement you know this tv show that it's going to be called counting cars and i said come on man really and he's like yes he's like can you help me out because i have to detail cars on the show so you would hang out in my shop every morning waiting for us to get there because he was going to be on the show and he didn't know anything about detailing he said i know how to watch cars and at this time we were already running classes and coaching people in the industry so i said sure rolly we'll help you out and of course you saw rolling on counting cars right he's kind of the weird guy with the ponytail and the glasses and the heavy accent and i did have the opportunity to be on counting cars as an expert twice two episodes they brought me in as an expert i work with uh matrix paint whose manufacturer was also a sponsor of the show and i came in and you know i've always been an expert in paint and you know color sanding and painting so you know we were on the show and we worked on this really cool 71 corvette for a country music star and it had this american flag and eagle running down the side because you know horny mike on the show had done this graphics and airbrushing we colored and polished it and that was one of the episodes danny came in talked to us and we kind of did a cameo appearance going into that conversation we met steve from welder up who's a good friend of mine he builds those really cool diesel rat rods i don't know if you've ever seen them they're badass what's really cool about vegas is that you would think that if this place in the middle of the desert with casinos would just be the life but honestly it's like everywhere else in america you go four or five miles off the strip it's got suburbs and communities that are beautiful and it has an amazing car culture so when we were shooting the first episode for counting cars we spent about three or four days what i learned is is that the production companies determine what you do and how you do it you don't do it they build the story and a lot of what you see behind the camera in fact danny does amazing work but when he's put under these strict timelines they just want it to look good for camera because if you saw some of the finished work in person it's not good you're told to do x and make it look like x in x time and that's what you need to do and there's a lot of pressure there's a lot of weird hours the production company are the gods you do what the gods tell you to do and you know danny told me when we showed up that and kevin hey listen this is not what you think okay in fact we're not making any money on this job we're doing this job for free people think that we're getting paid uh we're not getting paid okay this is free the sponsors are paying for the cars to be built for the customers and we don't always finish them 100 and i was quite shocked i mean i was like wow i mean this is a lot of money for these cars not to look perfect and they weren't and i was disappointed because i wanted to do more on the cars and i was told stop it's good enough for camera so everybody has to understand that reality tv shows are about like van wicky telling cool stories but you guys don't see behind the scenes you don't see and there's a lot of drama behind the scenes okay and it's not my place to share what i saw as far as the cast and what happened because that's their business but i respect the fact that i don't know necessarily i mean we've been offered to do a reality tv show called the king of gloss several times by a couple production companies i just shot one i'm gonna test it but i think what i'm most concerned about is i don't want it to take away from what i love and what i do and what happens is when danny says he gets into tv he has no control and it controls you so people out there that see these reality tv shows it's not that easy and it's very stressful and it's weird hours i mean we were three or four o'clock in the morning colorstand and bluffing a car because that's the only time frame we had that day and then we had to stay awake for eight hours and then do it again that wasn't fun you know we weren't getting paid we were just doing it because we wanted the exposure we wanted people to know who we were when i talked to steve from welder up now the rat rods steve lives about three miles from where i live cool property uh actually his property has this pole where he put like this old country bar on top of the pole and then there's an old 56 pickup with its lights coming out of the ground steve's a very cool guy but very different and obviously he's not married single but he can do this we talk you know i see him at starbucks in the morning and now he's doing training for welding he's a coach and mentor um he asked me a lot of questions because i've been doing the classes and coaching for the detailing industry for over 15 years and uh he asked me do you guys have online training do you guys have live classes how do you set up your pricing and you know we wanted to help him so him and i sat down a couple times and he's doing quite well now with the training but he stopped doing the tv he said he doesn't want to do anymore so it interrupted his passion for what he loved he's glad that he had the experience but he didn't want to pursue it and they wanted to keep going and he said i'm out this is taken away from what i love to do and very genuine and humble guy we're you know pretty good friends through the automotive circles but there's just a lot of tv shows coming so whether glossa does one or not will be determined we're focusing a lot on youtube right now in
