It's a weird thing to watch and feel like I have some sort of secret black box knowledge and know more than most people when literally ALL I do is VTWAX n' chill. Focus on income. Dump every cent you possibly can into one ticker. Never panic sell. Crazy how easy Bogle made investing.
I enjoyed this documentary so I thought I would post it here
i watched this in college sitting in my dorm room at like 1am (back around the time it aired) when i should have been sleeping and it freaked me out. i later that week called my parents and found out they're in just as bad of a situation as most of the people in this documentary. from then on i resolved to not be totally screwed and actually try to invest for retirement.
Iβve watched this a few times and always enjoy it in a morbid kind of way. The dude shilling active management is so slimy.
The key take-aways:
1) Don't depend on a company for your retirement
2) Don't depend on Government for your retirement
3) Invest in low cost index funds across an entire investing career
4) Always work to better yourself income wise, which can include establishing other sources of income outside of your W-2 salary, preferably sources of income which are treated favorably by the US tax code
thank you for posting this...just watched it and it really pisses me off because I fell into this trap for most of my working life and now regret not being smarter than that!
I'm only a few years from retirement and am now in a good position with a balanced, low cost portfolio with Vanguard but hoping I was not too late in doing that!
Just trying to make sure my children don't make the same mistakes I made!
Thank you for the post - I had not seen this before.
I ended up with AXA (Equitable) when I started my job at a public university 2 years ago as they were first to approach me. I had no knowledge whatsoever of 403(b) plans and its funds in overall. All funds they offer are 100 basis points or higher in expenses. Now I am starting new position at a different university, I wanted to move my savings to rollover IRA or new employer's 403b. They said to wait for five more years or pay 10 % penalty upfront. Unfortunately i can not escape that 10% fee. I totally can relate to few people's story in the documentary
Legit question - if you have a ROTH, Trad IRA, and HSA - do you pick 1 of the index funds in, for example the basic 3 fund, for each of the accounts - or break up each individual account into say the 3 fund portfolio leading to what looks like 3 individual 3 fund portfolios?
I seem to think its the former right - but i'm not 100% confident in that and to be honest I can't find any information about how to actually construct one's profile and just info about what funds to target and the percentages.
