The Reality Of Ranching In -40 Degrees F.

[Music] good morning folks welcome back hope you're all doing well staying warm it is currently about 20 below last couple days have been 25 below so today feels pretty warm but uh yeah they say the real feel is like 43 below that's what it feels like whatever that means but it's just it's cold but um yeah just left the tractors running for the last 3 days so we can just get going feeding calvs not have to worry about trying to start them um right now my Dad is feeding the cow some hay and I'm going to go around and give everybody some cake which is a protein supplement and break up all the ice so there will be some ice to break for sure this cold but yeah come along it'll be fun so maybe you guys can help me I got to do some quick Cowboy Ma so every cow is going to get about 3 lb cake today and a Full Bucket weighs about 25 lb so let's see number of cows well we can go bu groups so first group 120 * 3 would be 360 and divide that by 25 about 14 so 14 buckets took Me 2 and 1/2 Scoops to fill a bucket it's 14 * 2 1/2 28 by 36 Scoops in there all right 36 and we got five groups of cows so we're going to need to scoop about a couple hundred couple hundred Scoops I did the math that was really close about 200 scoops okay but I'll be breaking that inload stuff it's going to keep me warm this morning which is good morning girls come get some cake [Applause] a pull ahead a little bit [Applause] all right the first group is fed you're welcome girls I know some of of you have asked why we don't get one of those automatic cake feeders set on the back of your pickup don't have to get out you can pull under a bin load it up with cake go out to the field turn it on drive along and put cake out yeah it would be nice but uh I don't know how I'd get my exercise otherwise her deal is I don't know if she broke her hips or what but I just showed up to feed this group of cows and this cow is stuck on her side I think she actually broke her hip she's not great she's an older cow we might have to just shoot her but I'm going to try and get her up if I [Music] can come [Music] I'm going to have to get somebody to come help me she only weighs 13400 lb maybe I can roll her over the other way [Music] doesn't look good her hips are in bad shape she's probably an old cow old her and slipped and fell and probably broke her hip I'm sure she's been laying like this all night but I'll get my dad over here we'll try and get her up she's not even trying to get up so probably going to have to put it down to be honest the rest of the cows in this group are all in great shape so I think she's just one of those older ones that when they go downhill they go downhill fast so probably just happened overnight see the rest of these cows they look great but I'm going to keep giving them [Music] Stak hey hello yeah did you see that cow that's down yeah I did she C oh she she just looks tough so yeah just is that the one you were talking about going downhill yeah that's the one I noticed before that was kind of looking rough yeah I'll bring my pistol back and shoot her yeah I figured she'd probably just put her down y she's not even really trying to get up or anything anything no she's not she's not going to make it anyways no she probably an old cow she just sold her but right it's hard to get them all well it [Music] is take a c off of them but sometimes they don't make it right yeah you think she's has anything or is just old just just old she might have heard her hi too you know once kind of like a person that H to that's the end of it yeah just kind of like geriatrics yeah they just go downhill and they die yep it's kind of the last thing y hips start going out and stuff yeah yeah I don't think you could even get her up she she wouldn't stand I don't think she's too skinny anyway she's yeah so all right down but the cold weather takes a lot it takes so much energy to she might not be eating enough too and she's not drinking probably so yeah I suppose going to make it right y I'll I'll just put her down now okay put in the dead okay sounds good um what do you have to chop ice i grabed a pickaxe oh yeah don't put any holes in T I know I'll be careful okay all right I just got the yearlings to give cake to so all right be done those all right sounds good okay all right okay talk to you later how crisis well my dad's just going to put her down I did notice one kind of going down the hill a couple days ago and yeah you heard him talking the hard weather's just hard on him and she's older it was getting kind of skinny and we probably should have sold her when we were cooling our cows earlier but it's just hard to know she she probably looked good back then just the last few weeks last couple weeks started going downhill so there nothing you can really do it's just the way it is it's cycle of life [Applause] so in this pasture the cows actually just drink out of the creek the creek is all froze over as as well so got to make a spot for them to be able to come in here and [Music] [Music] drink there we go [Music] [Music] thing [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well that should work we got a big enough hole five or so can drink at a time there's not many many in this pasture anyway Ice is like 6 in deep 8 in well guys I want to say thank you for coming along today hope you're staying warm wherever
