The Real Work Begins on Restoring This 1970’s Sand Rail

that oil looks good that is clear oil no crud in the bottom all right today we are giving this buggy Sandrail thing a bit of a makeover we need to replace just about every hose it has on it for fuel oil all that good stuff we need to fix the tires fix the seats put a shifter on it put a new headliner get the air cleaners on there it's it's going to be work but I think it'll be worth it in the end and yeah it's going to be a good day to begin we're going to get started on the engine in the back just make it make it run good make it run better make it run how it's supposed to be anyway let's get to it what hoses are you going to replace first we're going to start with this one that runs from our switch going from our two tanks we'll put a new line here and then obviously these fuel filters need replaced there was one right there once upon a time we need oil lines running from this filter all the way back here while he does that I'm going to get the starter out and uh figure out what's wrong with the one we do have and then put a new one [Music] in [Music] yeah wow oh my yeah that's that's broken that's broken broken wonder if I could TIG that back together probably could that's horrible news that means our rivets are probably coming loose okay so red and white are the only ones I need to keep in mind I think they're using the positive post of the of the starter as the positive for all the switches and everything all right so we have a rebuilt starter here um we're going to put it in if it breaks the nose cone again we'll know we have other issues and we've got to drop the engine and transmission so hopefully that doesn't happen all right new starters in looks great there it is boom we're just fighting every hose on this thing they're like Rock Solid um I already pulled off an oil line and took it to the store to get new hose so I knew what size it was but I got I got one more to take off and man I used a hammer and a chisel to get a hose off it'll be off soon yeah okay oh oh there is crap coming out of that that's she feel it she's doing it all right so we were having a hard time blowing the fuel out of this tank and that's why we pulled the bottom thing off disgusting see that all sorts of gelled up one I don't know if gelled up is the right word I got the hoses new hoses on for the oil Zach's working on the fuel still right it's not that bad cuz I've only put two on two hoses so This Is How They Run now there's one there's two run over here so the oil filter looks good I'm going to call it good next I'm going to hook the air filter up to the carburetors down to them I guess and uh see if we can figure out something there cuz I kind of don't know what I'm going to do I went and picked up these I guess couplings I don't know what these are called I should be able to run a PVC pipe up from these up to the air filter well that's how it looks that's one of them we need to do three more and it will be good to [Music] go [Music] d [Music] that looks weird there's enough Flex in them though so if I roll I don't know not going to roll we're going to have to do something different cuz I'm not I'm not digging the vibe of that I think we need to just change the oil really quick uh Zach needs to finish this Fuel and then we'll be ready to start her up and see what she does that oil looks good that is clear oil no crud in the bottom so we're calling it quits for the evening because the Sun is going down and uh that's when I like to call quits usually things are going good a little slower than I anticipated but good good morning and it is a weird morning at that come look at all the fog out outside it's worst I've ever seen it here you can barely see anywhere this is the kind of fog that you walk through and you just get wet that's that's too wet for me too humid at least it's kind of cold so it makes up for it but anyway yeah last night we ended up getting the fuel system all done got most of the oil figured out got the air cleaners on but they don't look right so today we need to get the tires figured out the front tires need to be replaced they both leak they both have holes in them the seats are too far forward for me my legs are too long they hit the pedals and it's kind of sketchy to drive kind of like a go-kart so we just need to move those back a little bit and I think it will be okay and then I think we're we're good to go I want to I want to check and make sure all the lights work and figure out why they're not and whatnot we have the starter done fuel lines air cleaner kind of I didn't say oil change but we can cross it off it's over there like this we'll do tires seat we'll make sure the seat bels work and roof perfect we'll probably actually get those pulled out of the shop today and start tuning some of the things on it but the shocks also need to be replaced but I have those coming in the mail so we'll figure that out when the time comes this is the tire that has most of the issues um there's no lug nuts so what we have to do is we have to pull this cap off undo the nut for the spindle and then just pull the whole wheel off as one unit and then we can work with it so we took the cap off and it's just full of sand now that one's pretty clean that one is nice okay not as bad as I thought they might be definitely a bad seal though I would say we're going to try to break the bead on these tires by driving on top of them holy crap all right so those tires are on the rims way more than I thought they would be and that didn't work so we're just going to take it to to the local auto shop where I usually just have them pop the bead off anyway say it might be a couple hours before they get the tires done so we decided to fuel this up and get gas for the sand rail anyway that was fast this was empty and it only took five gallons so Rudy's out for just a minute um while he's gone I'm going to be pulling both these seats out because they are super tight and you can't hardly sit in [Music] there problem was I was too close to the pedals so we're going to have to slide the chairs back and this bar is in the way so we're going to have to cut that out and then I think I'm going to take this bar here that's already yellow I'm going to cut it off probably probably right there somewhere is well weld the old bar to here and then use this bar as the new bar to go back so that's too narrow so we need to bend it see what that did we got to go a little more [Music] [Music] okay all right let's see how we do [Music] close I think we need to cut about 4 in off [Music] [Music] I like right where it's at like right there I don't care if we have to push like like that's where I want the back of this to [Music] [Music] I don't think you've ever like properly measured and marked anything I have aate measure look at this hold on hold on let's let's do math okay that's my first one eyeballing little little bit off not bad and my second one dead on yeah M what what do you mean the angle's a little off but the length is the same I don't know what more you want from me Zach that's perfect all right let's grind uh we'll grind these tubes off get that tube fitting better and then weld it up [Music] a [Music] all right so the other day when and I was taking this around the block um that it doesn't have a shifter so the threads were cutting my hand every time I shifted like look at that that is not great and while we were at the part store earlier today uh I found something that's going to be perfect it even matches like the color and everything like look at this that is quite the perfect color yeah all right shifter's on fits the vibe I I think now we actually just need to get the seats bolted down seat covers on I've got new seat covers right here I think they match the rig pretty good something close to that you'll have to just imagine it put on and then we just need to wait for the wheels and tires from the auto shop and we'll be good to go all right so I wanted to get the tires on um so we could drive it around once we got it started but TI still aren't done but we can start it up and start kind of adjusting the carbs and stuff like that and then Mount the seats get it warmed up while we still wait for those front tires but other than that it's it's pretty close to getting ready to go so I'm going to start up real quick see what it needs look at that that is a pro move right there [Music] little more it'll it'll go oh yeah that was a little bit great now it's flooded only that bank is and I guess that Maks too here we go [Music] yeah you're going to have to Prime that fuel system did you move any that went down I don't know what that means [Music] [Music] though [Music] [Music] all right so I need to fill you in on the other day with those front tires we got them back from the shop but they they weren't able to mount the tires on the wheels so I just did it um that night and it was kind of a pain in the butt but it just got it done anyway but um still waiting on a couple parts but at least it's drivable now and tomorrow we're going to go with Colin in his Sandrail buggy thingy right Sandra buggy thingy yeah and we're just going to go for a drive and and uh see what they do so on mine we didn't have brakes um lines weren't hooked up things were leaking so I fixed all that and then went to put fluid in it and my what is this called it's master cylinder started leaking is that the one that started leaking no this was a good one so this one I pulled off of one of my dad's parts cars and I'm just going to go swap it out so this was the old one all nasty like and this is the new one so that one's got a bad piston in it this is the new one cleaned it out put a new sealer boot on [Music] it I'm excited Rudy smart and got the brakes working this is great okay let's go hit the RO Jack okay Rudy you ready for the ride of your life I don't know depends on if the brakes work I guess let's roll baby oh
