this is Harvard psychologist Robert Rosenthal and in 1968 he found a phenomenon called the Pygmalion effect which could be the thing holding you back in life now with the help of a school principal Lenore Jacobson Robert conducted a study about how teachers expectations of a student can actually influence the student's performance at school they found that if teachers had higher expectations of certain children then they would perform better and if they had lower expectations of certain children then those ones would actually do worse now when the study was released this phenomenon grew in popularity as people realized it wasn't just limited to the classroom but that expectations could influence behavior at work and at home and more importantly with our own selves having low expectations of our own abilities can cause us to underperform so there's two main things that we can do to take control of the Pygmalion effect the first is to shift our mindset to believe in our own abilities and the second which is arguably even more important is to surround ourselves with people who believe in us and who support us and want to see us succeed because spending time with people who have low expectations of you and low standards can actually be really damaging so it might be worth asking yourself are you spending time with the people who want to see you succeed
