okay i started making this video just to show off that you can mod a ps class to add more games on it and that's really it but after spending some more time with it i realized there is so much more you can do with this thing things that i never even considered possible so i want to walk you through all the cool things you can do with a modded ps classic because this thing is awesome once it's modded especially since you can grab one of these really cheap nowadays okay so remember the ps classic it sucked mainly because when we heard a ps classic was being released around the same time nintendo was coming out with their awesome nes and super nes classics the ps classics seemed kind of lazy it came with 20 pre-installed games but the games were kind of lame where's crash where's spyro where's gran turismo where's the games that actually made the ps1 popular instead we got stuff like mr driller and intelligent cube don't get me wrong there are some really cool games installed here but it could have been so much better plus this thing was a hundred bucks okay well what if we could fix that what if we could add literally any ps1 game we wanted to this thing add more emulation options and even run things like psp windows and a bunch of other stuff well now you can let me show you how but first let me take a moment to celebrate and to thank everyone that is watched up to this point [Music] a hundred thousand subscribers is not a small milestone and i recognize that i would not be here today if not for the people that are watching right now these past two years have changed my life in ways that i never even considered possible and in spite of so many things changing there are a lot of things that also stay the same yeah there might be a hundred thousand people watching me now but i'm still just the guy in a room making videos on my desk like that's it when i first made this channel i really only made it with the intention of showing off to my friends what kind of projects i was working on when i was still in college and i would have never considered the thought of me being able to do this on youtube full-time at some point ultimately the goal for this channel was always for me to be able to make videos that i would be interested in that i would want to watch and this award represents a hundred thousand other people that have the same interests the same hobbies as me and i could not be more thankful for that thank you all so much for watching and giving me the opportunity to inform and entertain you guys there are so many other channels on youtube you could be watching right now and i'm just thankful that you decided to take your time to watch me instead so thank you and here's hoping that 200k gets here a little bit faster right okay that's all i wanted to say thank you let's get back to the video now so i'm going to be honest you've been able to monitor ps classic for quite a while now but modding this thing has gotten a lot better and more importantly a lot easier with the release of project eris which unlocks a whole bunch of other features for the mini console i'm going to quickly run you through how easy it is to install this thing it really just takes less than five minutes to get this entire thing set up okay first we got a nail on the mod itself now there's two different mods that people use project aeris and autobloom now i would be crucified i didn't at least mention auto bleem but for our case project aries is just a lot easier to manage just click the link in my description or search up project arius on google or whatever and you should find the complete download here download it extract the files and you should see three folders okay we're gonna need a flash drive i'm gonna use this low profile samsung flash drive because it's small and it doesn't stick out when it's plugged into the ps classic plus it's guaranteed to work i'll link it in the description right by the like button if you want to buy it all right let's plug it in we're going to need to reformat this to a fat32 file system windows can't do that by itself so we're going to use a tool called rufus to format it again link is going to be in the description we just select our device boot selection is set to non-bootable volume label is just going to be called sony in all caps this mod won't work otherwise file system is going to be large fat32 and just leave everything else alone and hit start okay it's formatted now you can just delete all this stuff off the flash drive don't worry now we're going to take our three mod folders we downloaded and drag and drop them into the flash drive just give them a sec it's its first day okay the flash drive is ready let's plug it into the system and turn it on at this point you should see a new splash screen which means it's just installing project errors and creating a backup of your system just in case something goes wrong just give it a few minutes all right now once we see this the system should shut down automatically now let's plug in that flash drive back into the computer make a new folder and just drag and drop all the stuff into the flash drive to this folder it'll be good for safekeeping in case you mess something up okay now we gotta reformat the drive one last time but this time to ntfs this part is a bit easier just right click on the drive hit format set it to ntfs and you're done now drag back all the stuff onto the flash drive and once it's done you can finally plug it back into the ps classic and check it out you should see three brand new menus on your console and congrats your ps classic is officially modded i know you guys see that red shark icon over there we'll get to that soon don't worry okay let's start with the main app project eris now if you just want to have the best ps1 machine ever and keep everything looking stuck on your ps classic but with just more games you can just use this at this point loading new games should be really easy and simple on your flash drive you switch to a folder called transfer open it and drag and drop your legally obtained physically owned ps1 roms then when you plug it back into your ps classic and open up project aeris your new ps1 game should pop up like normal here's me running gran turismo which is one of the best games on the system in my opinion and arguably should have been there from the start and the original crash which again it's like who was running the team over there when they're making this like did no one bring up crash and that's it it's really that easy to add more games to your ps classic and the best part is you can absolutely load this thing up with ps1 games i've seen people load up to 650 games on this thing which you know assuming you legally all and all of them and stuff okay so we modded our ps classic and have tons of games on it now cool awesome but here's the thing one of the big reasons the ps classic was criticized was because the emulator they used for it wasn't that great it ran at 50 hertz instead of 60 hertz it was super bare bones it didn't have any options and worst of all since the games are a bit older they used this terrible 2x bilinear filter that just stretched everything up and blurred it which made it look really bad fortunately that's where retroarch comes in retroarch for those who aren't familiar is a front end for a bunch of different emulators so you can use a better more robust ps1 emulator that not only runs better but has a bunch more features for example you can remove this terrible bi-linear filter and use enhanced resolution which will double the resolution of native ps1 games making them look much better check out some comparisons not all games are going to be able to run this way though it's going to be on a game by game basis just experiment and see what works for you you can also add crt shaders to the game if you're into that since these games really benefit from them since they were designed with them in mind you can also buy one of these adapters by 8bitdo that lets you pair up any controller you want to use with the ps classic and it just works with no need for drivers or installation or anything just pair your ps4 or ps5 controller and off you go and since this is a completely different emulator that means you can play dual analog games that weren't originally supported on the ps classic for example ape escape is one of those games that straight up cannot be played with the included controllers but using a modded ps classic and the 8bitdo adapter you can suddenly play one of the best games made for the ps1 and yes this works on ps4 controllers ps5 controllers and xbox controllers too if you want to be a degenerate i guess these things are really cheap i'll leave it in the description if you want to grab one best part is if you want to just keep the same ps classic ui but just use the superior retroarch emulator there's an option in project errors to have your games automatically boot using project ares now right out of the box retroarch will only come installed with only one core psx rearmed which funny enough is actually the same emulator that sony used for the ps classic just with no options however there is a way to install a bunch of more cores to your console which will let you play games from a bunch of other systems so you can play not just ps1 games but also nes super nes genesis game boy advance and so much more and before you ask no it can't do ps2 it's not that powerful i'm sorry it's very simple there's a link in the description that has a download to all these cores and it's just simple as just dragging and dropping them into your flash drive besides you're going to need them anyways for the third app emulation station now emulation station is a very fancy front end for all of your chords you just downloaded so when you want to play a non-ps1 game on your console you can just come over here and it'll have a wonderful layout where you can see all your games later all nice and pretty and using a wi-fi adapter like this we could add a bunch of more features to the console now at this point you're probably going all right all right jeff this is this is cool and all but i'm running out of usb ports here i only got two and the other one literally has my games on it so what are we gonna do here don't worry i get what you're saying so check this out this is an otg adapter which acts exactly like a usb hub but it taps into the ps classics power cable to be able to power it giving you an extra three usb ports so you can plug in your flash drive and wi-fi adapter in the back and still have room for your 8-bit doe adapters or your original controllers in the front oh well can i just use a regular usb hub uh unfortunately no sony power limited these ports are just five volts so it really can't power anything so buying an otg adapter like this really comes in handy again i'll leave this one in the description if you want one anyways back to the wi-fi adapter yeah with one of these hooked up you can finally connect your ps classic to the internet that means you can ssh into your ps classic now and drag and drop files over wi-fi so you don't have to keep plugging in the flash drive to computer every time you want to add something best part is on your flash drive there's already a games folder that already has the folders all laid out for you you can just drag and drop your games in here and emulation stations should be able to see it and play it through retwerk and now that you're connected to wi-fi you can use emulation station's built-in meta data scraper which will fill out all the information for your games including the box art release dates developer and little descriptions of each game making your emulation station look really sleek it's kind of neat right okay let's talk mods there are other standalone mods you can dial into your ps classic most notably are the standalone emulators for example drastic is a nintendo ds simulator and it works phenomenally well on this thing i haven't found a game that it can't run upscaled and at full speed plus it looks and plays fantastic on the ps classic if you have one of these i highly recommend you install a drastic on this there's also ppsspp or for short which is a psp emulator and while this does run some games comfortably at double internal resolution and at full speed uh more than half of the games fail to run at full speed even at native resolution but the games that do work work really really nicely mostly the games that just came out in the early lifespan of the psp games like daxter is running at full speed at 2x revolution and runs and looks great and metagear solid looks fantastic on a monitor like this also running at full speed but some games no matter what you do will just not run at full speed making for really really unplayable experience at the very least the possibility is there though and it just brings a few more games that are playable on your ps classic compared to the 20 that were already pre-installed here are a list of games that have been deemed playable uh the list is long enough that i feel like it justifies at least downloading it and giving it a try but what do you think is there anything on here that would make you wanna install pps's pp on your ps classic there's also a bunch of different native ports for the ps classic for old school games everything from brutal doom to half-life to quake can run on here and you can even run a full copy of windows 3.1 with mouse and keyboard support and everything i personally don't ever see myself using this but apparently there are some people that miss these old games i would want to play them on here either way it's more of a novelty thing and it's just kind of neat seeing this run on something that it was never really designed to run off so on its own the ps classic is honestly a big fat loss it really feels like there was a lot of wasted potential here even as just a throwback to the original playstation it just feels unfaithful to the original console and all that stood for back in the day but you know how people used to buy a raspberry pi and then just load retropie on it and then just make a little mini retro console for cheap well i mean before the whole chip shortage thing happened i honestly feel like these mini consoles are gonna be the next best way to make one of those mini stations with just a flash drive a computer and five minutes of your time you can turn this thing into a mini retro station that can run all the best ps1 games nes games super nes games nintendo ds game boy and a bunch of other stuff and it's far cheaper than a raspberry pi i'll leave ebay and amazon links if you want to pick one up for yourself super cheap all the mini consoles ever released are moddable and some sort of way too like the nes classics snes classic genesis classic so i'm considering making videos on this too if you guys are interested let me know in the comments if that's something that you'd like to see anyways check out the next big project that i have going on over here and thank you for watching [Music]
