I heard Grandmaster Flash in the Wheels of Steel that was a person so date the self record from a ena and when I heard that record I was like It was as if all I to do to make music Lisa by some turntables and and and learn how to scratch remember being at school and working through my six week holidays school just to get some technics in a mixer and basically like for the next thing it was about 15 and for the next song yeah I was just stating all the time and just learn how to do that armed with his turntables Liam started DJing and he soon got a regular set at a club in Essex called the barn and it was the place where the prodigy was conceived suppose it was a meeting ground really you know whatever you did you know if he's gone out for a weekend and staff fee that was ever Friday night down at the farm and it was ring and all the people there only so I went down there I've never danced anywhere in my entire life ever not even a wedding reception you know and taught me to down everything that I do the stemming from Dancing with Leroy you know assignment labor told me to dance and some mr. Bassel putting on that play the tracks in the bedroom know anything you know left be right there and you know some dance together that's not at all one thing clearly sticks in my head just was a ton we were on the beach it was about must be 5:00 in the morning there's about friend of people their lungs been DJing at the back of a transit bag and this guy Cantonese you know long long hair okay and it was like I have a junior plane last week tried to sing it out some tracks down some likey and tight so yep cool and then the next week it turns out touch me the tape this is all that tracks on there and a few others are like the beans and on the other side's my stuff so of course I only tap the tape on and listen to the track that one is really cool checked out the other stuff don't expect a know people who can not use it properly you know you've heard loads of like acoustic demo type things that makes of put together and [Music] [Music] mainly one Cape decided that we want to sort Trumper this thing on stage we didn't know what it was gonna be like in this stage and we kind of we had a friend called Ziggy who he saw tried to become a manager and dear friend of course Maxim reality and he's like ah he sees mad you know he's got this little tough to pair his sticks out in front of his head big sucked into I turned up with my friends on the first show which is a delivery in May everybody I'm just got on the stage and just jumped I was just freestyling lyrics and you know it was cool is good there's a good there's a good buzz we turn up now midday or something seventh at midday not Boy Scouts being prepared it'll the equipment will sell time to work out where these leads when we get to the PA and get sound out of it and [ __ ] like that we didn't have salmon line many so you know so we all turned up no one really knew what they were gonna do well they were gonna do it and then we're on stage keeps feeling pretty oh I was doing a sound check on stage and stuff and I just I played Charlie the mix was in the charts and a DJ was also checking his headphones at the time and Keith went up to the DJ and it was like what's this journey playing it's wicked you know and his I always it's not me so man over there and that was me playing playing the record you know and it was the first time you heard it were there and he was it was a huge hits but critics described Charlie as the kiddie techno tune that killed the rave scene it was the repercussions after that record which killed it you know people who copying other artists you know sort of all this kind of crap the follow the Sesame Street they were the real novelty tunes [Music] they were cashing in and what well I what I've done but at once it made Charlie I knew I'd never make another record lie again [Music] in sort of the early days you've got one-hit-wonder thing you know you've got the dance albums don't sell all that type of [ __ ] you know and we kind of everytime we released a record week so you know we sort probe people wrong it just showed that if you feel real when you stick to yourself and stick to what you believe and you do it for yourself and not for the rest of the world you know that was the way to get things to pay off really something that didn't pay off for prodigy was the criminal justice bill the law which put an end to rave parties across the UK I was really disillusioned with the whole rave scene and the final straw was when his when were in Scotland on stage a thing called resurrection and and there was a guy an official standing at the mixing desk eating the bass and the music you know not just one we're on stage and Sal just walked offstage that was it you know I wasn't gonna I wasn't playing the music we put a statement on on the one love AP and that for me was kind of like that was for me the last time I want to play in any rave in England just because it finished you know it gone you know it gone in 93 it wasn't what I was into when I first got into it and it was like we'd already started to make her ways into sort of like small festivals and stuff away and that was kind of more of a buzz for us whether it was gonna kill the band or whatever is going to do we were just into doing that because it was a big buzz you know it's a different thing as the hard work paid off prodigy felt it was time to take the next step to emerge from the shadows of the underground dancing everyone before the dancing was kind of like scared to be like to step out of it because they were worried about not being underground you know which is a stupid thing really we weren't none of us wanted to be pop stardom and still done but it's like he kind of weren't afraid to sort of have our faces in the video wherever bands were like faceless techno artists we were like no it's possible to be credible and to have a face you know and kind of you know and that's why we we wanted to do a video like that and it worked everyone was trying to put a name on the music that the prodigy were making and that prompted the band to come up with their own definition the press spend all year making up stupid sort of descriptions of bands and stuff and we just thought we'd over go just summing the time that we desert you know all of a sudden it's like prodigy are the electronic punks know whatever we just do what we do and other people can make up whatever descriptions they want about what we do take AB and put them in the middle of a jungle on the island of st. Lucia make them sweat and run all over the place and create a mini horror movie voodoo people where the wicked laugh but to be honest I'm it's probably the hardly sub work tonight you know a good ten years since since the library job are bad in the building side [Music] when you try to put effort in terms of you know making something exciting and making it know and you know get at the enjoyment of maybe making a small sort of quick moving sort of thing but not coming across not just cheese masters really you know you want to stay cool and you know you don't look back on it and think it's not cool from character acting to powerful performance poison was the tune mixing deep bass sounds and dark drum beats into a rhythmical remedy that brought Maxine to the forefront of the band maximun really wanted to become at that point a much more versatile you want to get the vocal tip much more you know it kind of didn't want to be just an MC and so we were messing around with vocals and that track helped him develop into what it does now you know it was good because I just thought I just felt like it represented me more you know I've got a poison about the remedy pulsating rhythmical remedy came from my head [Music] if I have a microphone in my hand I'm that I'm not hundred percent comfortable you know you give me a microphone uncomfortable and that's what I'm about it sums up what we do best really just the performance side it's like her you know it is had quite a life feel about it and that's what I mean - really I'm into that whole thing's coming up in part two of the show how Keith got that haircuts now from Red Square and the story of firestarter only in the essential prodigy the tour that followed the release of poisons saw prodigy taking a new direction with Keith Flint developing his character with indie bands having the long hair was a lot a real kind of party ravy thing to do and I suddenly realize that you know I was still a part of that and then I thought and then you getting into snowboarding and you know some warts you know a bit of a sort of street culture type thing going on there you know now suddenly felt yeah I'm gonna cut it all off and just dye it red [Applause] you know one damn so avid it died and I said have you got the Clippers with you and I mean I said yeah I'll just at what took the middle out and thought well I'll make it a bit wider and stick this bit up here and and went man lay ins and then look for its kitchen window it said no man it's cool I like it I mean I'm down with it and men's of the day you know it won't pull it off you don't you don't have it there now something realize I wouldn't I won't the game to work again I suppose when you could win is that like you leave school and got parents be parents are extremely strike you know frightening least right so they're domed it into you like you know you need to be getting a job you need to be looking like someone always wants to employ you and I something with us that I don't afterward I haven't got an employer I don't work for yourself this isn't work I'm having a laugh I'm in a band and I'm just gonna take the peace the others everyone's gone I don't know where they going if there's an award to be won prodigy always seem to go home with quite a few at our annual MTV Europe Music Awards [Music] totally static this song that's alternative and best video very top someone not the only reason we come to the awards is because it's about it caught by the people you know we get the coolest people coming to our shows so we're really lucky you know we don't have to play in front of loaded plums we've got like cool people to play in front of and that's who we respect it was invited by the people then it was more industry type thing probably would be [Music] [Music] prodigy have turned into an essential live act their performances are an event not to be missed and when the boys are on stage they take it to the max I've seen myself as there are two different people the way you see me now and then there's maximum prodigy you know there's something slightly amiss music has brought something out me you saw me on stage emceeing before the prodigy I would have just been walking up and down the stage this emceeing but because over the years the music's brought something out at me inside of me it's just like the part of me which wants to do parachute jumps or wants to drive cars faster that wants to jump off cliff edges and whatever that part inside of me it's been bought out and that comes out on stage I love doing the festival's themself we know all the other bands get to know everyone and you know it's just spending the summer traveling to all the festivals I mean that's probably what most people want to spend their time doing anyway listen to good live music you know you know some soaked in a bit of the summer up and stuff [Music] from the summer to the winter and the ice cold city of Moscow for a very special show live from Red Square and prodigy really did fire up the crowd from the start I remember there was like two sets of barriers because there were so many people there they kind of front stage and so many thousands of people and then another barrier and you know on this barrier there's like lines of sort of military police or soldier or something going on there and they like literally sort of bashing kids telling them to get down and stuff I'm going to just stop running around there and people type of soldiers trying to stop me and me just getting through and security sort so no he's in the band you know but me not really caring too much went to the second barrier and they just pulled tooling soldiers down and used him to climb up into the barrier and you know stirred all these people up that were being told to calm down stirred them up and you know got jumping around and to me that the satisfaction of doing that and the longest nurse of doing that was unbelievable you know in Russia suddenly and it proved to me that when you're on stage it you are lawless what you want to do is what you want to do the buzz that overtakes you is unbelievable that really prove that to me that you almost shot yourself because I don't think he pushed soldiers around in Russia you know something that we here I've been seeing him [Music] [Music] when Prodigy release firestarter it was the tune that took them to number one around the world that's not bad for something that was an experiment with the Firestar he was literally like we were experimenting in studio I'd written the instrumental to be the first instrumental one on the fat of the land you know just a starting point I don't seem to keep I'll come round about this little instrument or working on the moment and he heard him was like I've really like to have a go at Dean's and vocals on this track and get a good vibe out of this track it's kind of doing the right things for me you know and then I want to try it just to experiment so what happened and just took it from there and but not everyone loved the video and angry parents call TV stations saying that keith was scary the scary thing I think that is that is shite really you know I suppose Marilyn Manson sort of scary but in a kind of a proper horror scary kind of way and maybe you know like a twisted kind of way but I think the more you know I'm not scary you know I think that I'm scary to people that are scared of expressing themselves and just scared of life in general and you know just paranoid people really [Music] another powerful cheese and another number-one single in the shape of Brie featuring breathtaking performances from both ki and Maxim the whole the whole idea behind the tune was me it may keep it's quite confrontational and the reason why it works so well in the videos because that's the way it works on stage with us you know 9 percent at the time so basically we took the vibe which we we create on stage and we put it in the studio a number one album followed with fat of the land and a controversial video for the tune smack my [ __ ] up which no one would play except MTV [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] when user is gonna get banned anyway so why not give a video to mute get banned as well even though certain people won't play that video you look at the video and you think what's wrong with it you know I've seen more I've seen worst films on TV [Music] there may not have been immediate plans for a new prodigy album but fans had something to look forward to in 1999 with Maxim solo project [Music] it's gonna be quite a hard album you know it's gonna represent me that's what it's taking so long to do because one game time to do it and 201 I wanted to represent me 100% you know and there's gonna be a few collaborations on it I'll give you one which I've done and that's looking gang stuff there's gonna be a couple more hip hop artists on there [Music] once it comes out I want people just to listen to it as being as being me guys another angle of me Joe and not it's not it's not prodigies because it's not prodigy this Maxim I'm not ready to go back into writing another album I just want to get back to that sort of experimental stage where you can just do what you want and Connor not be under this pressure of having to deliver an album you know writing to order I hate write into order you know I'll just write music because I want to write music now is that point in saying yeah there's going to be another prodigy up until I'm excited about doing one I'm not you know I'm not yeah like fire started was a springboard for the whole fat of the land album you know I need to just find that you know that those couple of tracks that I'm late me on to the rest of the album you know and I'm just not I don't want to do it in a rabble at the moment I don't feel like doing much [Applause] you
