The Problem With The 4-Day Workweek

the year is 1926 Henry Ford F-150 just proposed an outrageous idea that his workers should work less and get paid more what who is this guy 14 years later the McDonald's Brothers created what is now one of the largest real estate companies in the world and just in time Congress established the 40-hour work week promising that if you work more than 40 hours in a single week you'll get 20% off your Happy Meal wait no you'll get overtime as in kaching and a half you get time and a half since then productivity has increased by about like 90 90 what I don't know like out of 200 maybe we now have robots Ai and unpaid overtime one person does what 12 people used to do I don't really even know what that means and now a few little experiments and a man who needs your support are leading the charge to get Gamers to work even less and get paid get this the same amount the 32-hour work week act try saying that 10 times on the surface this looks amazing and in enticing and delicious how many ah yes uh I'll have two please but will everyone actually benefit from this I made a PowerPoint about the false promises of the 4-day work week the idea is simple 40 - 8 = 32 hours say goodbye to meetings checking emails and saying the phrase did you hear what happened to Deborah autonomy from the United Kingdom did a study where they threaten 61 companies into doing a 4-day work week get a load of this it's their findings uh it's it's actually pretty neat I mean look at this one over 50% of the participating companies have made it permanent wow what about this one from South Africa or this one from Australia and I know what you're thinking Alex what about Ireland baby we got Ireland and the US 2 I guess looks pretty good I mean just one more won't hurt ladies and gentlemen we got them so there's a catch disclaimer I know that there's like a bunch of different types of jobs and bosses and situations I get it my intention is just to point out some of the flaws in the proposed 32-hour Work Week act so it can be you know enhanced and fair I'm not an economist I'm just an idiot with a green screen salary boys are otherwise known as I will do everything in my power to get no work done and still collect my paycheck oh thank you some of these salary jobs have a lot of downtime where you have tasks that you can complete in less than 40 hours but because you have to be there for 40 hours and you don't want more tasks karate chopped on your desk you end up spending your sweet time at the water cooler jobs where if you lower the number of hours the output will not change so it won't really cost the employers anything accountants engineers bookkeepers copywriters and other office jobs could successfully implement this I mean if you tell someone they can leave once they get their work done some people will bust everything out in like 2 days and if it does not affect the output why not with the new plan they would work 32 hours but get paid the the same amount so in a sneaky way they would be getting more buckaroos per hour or in the industry we call this a raise but not really because if your boss gives you more than 32 hours worth of work you're kind of forced to hit him with the classic guess I'm working late tonight Chief later that same evening per my last email the proposal does outline in like a very confusing way that salary employees would get overtime after 32 hours but a large chunk ofoo of salary employees are actually exempt from overtime hourly Gamers or the backbone of our society they would get paid the same hourly rate until they swerve past 32 hours then they would get overtime doing some very Advanced calculational analysis of the mathematics if they worked 40 hours they would get an extra 4 hours of pay on this new system which I guess could be like a 10% raise or they could work 3 hours less and get the same pay but they're going to be working more than 4 days a week currently some slum employers will dead Sprint into hourly employees when they hit 39 hours grab them by the back of their neck and yank them away from the cash register because they don't want to pay a few extra dollars per hour even though they're pocketing billions of dollars every year the new plan would have employers Naruto sprinting at 31 hours so some employees might need to find two jobs to actually be able to make enough money to afford life's basic necessities like food rent and like 14 different subscription Services I need a subscription to manage subscriptions the majority of the US is hourly and the majority of that majority is lower and lower middle class so implementing this act is kind of like saying you're doing a good job I guess um here's a little treat be grateful yo what up my guy do I have something for you you are going to love it I mean you got to start somewhere right but to make it fair you got to give everyone a 20% raise this proposal does that for the salary folks well what if the hourly Norm has got 20 cents more for every dollar they made well if you a sudden said the entire country could work 20% less that'll come with its own pile of oh who did not turn on the fan I keep telling you people turn on the fan that could mean Gamers would be loaded with more work or less Services would be provided yeah good luck getting some of that delicious Baja Blast freeze at 2:00 in the morning production could decrease or maybe even be moved to other countries and uh something something inflation GDP economy if it means workers would be happier and have a better work life balance then maybe it's worth it psych get out of here you s we are America we make burgers and billionaires so I guess my complete unbiased opinion is someone who's on salary with paid overtime let's get this thing going if you like what you saw like And subscribe thank you the rat goes like this like this like this you are now a normal rat [Music]
