The Presence of the Lord: Empowered by the Holy Spirit with Pastor Tommy Barnett

I'm going to get right in the message tonight I have believe I have a lifechanging message if the Holy Spirit Will anoint it I want to talk to you about living your life in the zone living in the zone Holy Spirit this will not be a successful service unless you come down in your presence and as they were singing a while ago surely the presence of the Lord is in this place it was not just a song it is reality and father this church will continue to be a great church if it lives what I'm preaching tonight in Jesus name amen have you ever stopped to think what makes a church distinct is it the music boy you've got great music every time I come but let me tell you it's the best I've ever heard of tonight it's off the chart these are amazing young people up here give the Lord a good clap off for that a that amazing is it the music that makes a church distinct or maybe it's the marketing of that church or maybe it's the pastor of that church but there's a reason that some churches are blessed and other churches they struggle and the reason is the iding presence of God himself and what's true of the church is also true of you what makes you different than other people what makes you have the Razor Edge on society today as an individual it is the abiding presence of God upon your life so my question to you this morning is how much time do you spend in the presence how much presence do you have going on in your life does anybody know it you see when you're in the presence it hangs on when a person comes out of a Chinese restaurant and you're talking to them you can smell the aroma of that Chinese restaurant it still hangs on them when a person comes out a a Mexican restaurant you can tell where they've been amen when a person comes out of a bar there's a kind of presence that certainly upon them and when a person comes out of the presence of God you know it because the presence is real it's the state it makes a difference it made a difference in moses' life when he came down from the mountain there was such a glow on his face such a glow Ray that came from his face they had to cover it up they could not stand to look at the Joy on his face Moses first experience of the presence of God was at the burning bush and it changed his life forever and when God called him to leave the children of Israel he had one stipulation God said I want you to go I want you to leave the children of Israel out of bondage he said okay I will God but I have one stipulation I won't go unless you go with me and God said now Moses I'm kind of busy right now God loes stuff to tun to but I'm going to send an angel with you Moses said Angel nothing I'm not going out in that desert with some strange angel that I've never even met before I'm just not going unless you go with me and God kind of chuckled and said I really want to go with you anyway Moses you see God's presence was a sing sign of God's presence upon his people and it would distinguish them from all other people now in business we know that the bottom line is success in sports it's winning in television its ratings in politics its votes but in the church success is the powerful strong abiding presence of God's Church of God's presence upon that church and when you find the presence of God you'll receive empowerment you see the people of God were just kind of mediocre people until the day of Pentecost and when it fell upon them they were different and it's amazing things I've experienced going to places to preach they didn't know who I was I felt intimidated I felt weak I felt out of place but when the presence of God Came Upon me I was so empowered I spoke with boldness I squared my shoulder back I felt like God Almighty himself was with me and within me you see when that happens you have an authority it affects the way that you walk the way you talk the way you smile the way you do life because you've been empowered by the awesome presence of the the almighty God now the presence is how God referred to himself with his conversation of Moses in Exodus CH 33 and verse 14 he said Moses my presence will go with you and I will give you rest see I want you to realize that if you're not experiencing rest tonight you're not living in the conscious presence of the presence of God you see if you're not having rest you're living and practicing the absence of the presence of God because in the presence of God there is rest I don't care what you've been through I don't care how we you soul is there is a comforter that comes to you when you experience the presence of God that you could turn to and he will give you rest so the empowering presence of God is to realize that God's presence is now in your life living in you and you really have an advantage now Jackie Robinson the first player to break the race barrier one day in the early beginning of his baseball career 1947 he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers it was a very important game but he made it erir it cost the Dodgers a very important game the crowd turned upon him they begin to boo and a hiss and a howl but in that tense moment an infielder by the name of PeeWee ree who later became a Hall of Famer shortstop and by the way he was born in the South and there were a lot of prejudice at that time he came over and put his arms around around him and the booing stopped Robinson referred to that moment as a turning point in his career and God wants to put his arms around you that's what the presence of God feels like he wants to empower you in such a way that you'll never forget it and by the way I've know many of the Great Men of God that God has used in America I've said with them many of my personal friends friends and I don't think there's a good preacher alive that has not had a moment that they had an encounter with God a moment where they could say God came to me and I know know what God is like I've never heard the great Dr Cho preach who recently passed away had the opportunity to be a part by video of his funeral I was not able to get there in time but I've never heard him preach without thinking since I heard him the last time that he had been face to face with God that he had talked with God in the early part of his ministry his church was struggling oh they were growing and things were going big but something was missing as a young man he said God I'm not going to leave this church until I feel your presence and until this church church becomes the greatest and the largest church in the world and he stayed for one year he fasted and prayed so much that they said as he preached sometime blood would Trinkle down his legs into his shoes but one day he broke through build the largest church in the world one church congregation running over 700,000 people when they want to have a prayer meeting they have to rent the Olympic stadium that she over 100,000 people for prayer meeting you see the presence of God makes a difference the great DL Moody built a great Moody Church Moody Institute the great man he was in building a great church there one day in New York City walking down the street when suddenly the power of God and the presence of God hit him and he said oh God don't let me make a fool wait till I get in my room and man he ran up to his hotel room room and she said that day the presence of God and the power of God filled him he went back to his church he preached the same messages that he preached before with 10,000 times he said more power I said earlier and I'm going to say it again the presence of God is a Racer's Edge the presence of God is a difference in a minister all over this city there are guys with so many degrees that you could call them Fahrenheit that's pretty good you you're slow waiting on laugh a little louder a little quicker amen while many many of God who don't even have a high school education but they have the power of God upon Him building churches that are not even big enough to hold the crowd come on say a good amen and while I am saying that you should get the education that you need you will not substitute for the lack of the presence of God the presence the word presence in the Old Testament is Pon that word in the Hebrew means turn your face all through the Old Testament you hear that term God turned his face towards his people or God turned his face away from his people or the people turned their face away from God or they turned their face to God you see the presence of God it's when God's face is turned towards you in a very special and gives you favor and blessing I love the story true story of a little boy whose mother had passed away his heart was broken the day of the funeral came and they could not stop him from weeping and the night when he went home his father comforted him and told him a story and read the Bible finally got him calmed down tucked him in bed said his prayers father went in the room next to it prepared himself for sleep and as he turned the lights out he heard his little boy's voice said dad would you come back into the room of course he went back into the room the little boy said Daddy would you sleep with me tonight I need you to sleep in this bed with me of course the father was happy to do it the lights went off again and it was quiet for just a few seconds when the little boy said dad is your face turned away from me or towards me and he said well my face is turned towards the wall away from you and the little boy said Dad if you just turn your face towards me I believe that I could make it through the night and how many times have you felt God I believe I can make it if I just realize that your face has turned towards me right and that's why our nation is such great message is in today I stood with Joyce Meer in South India 800,000 people three nights in a row I looked over the audience and she asked me to speak one night she spoke the other two nights and every night she asked me to give the alter call and as I stood and looked at that crowd that night I realized there's a great Revival in India there's a great Revival in China there's a great Revival in Brazil and by the way all of them are prospering they're emerging Nations even China there's a great Revival of nourishing Nations while we see our nation on the decline and I begin to discuss that with them that night and Joyce's husband David said I said why do you think that's happening he said as America has turned her face away from God these countries are turning to God oh I'm preaching good come on say a good amen and what comes when the face has turned toward you is the blessing the favor the goodness the rest the anointing the prosperity forgiveness and rest everything that you would ever want in life is coming at you as his face is turned towards you it means that he comes with you with every everything that he has Psalms put it this way the mountains melt with wax at the presence of God at the presence of God the whole earth shakes Luke 18:23 the things that are impossible with God are now possible with God Luke 1:37 for with God nothing nothing nothing is impossible and for the next few minutes I'm going to give you three aspects of the presence of God three levels you might say of the presence of God tune in now number one first of all I want to talk about the omony presence of God our God is everywhere Psalms 1 and verse 39 David said if I make my bed in hell you're there if I go to the highest Heavens you're there and many ask the question where can I go from the presence of God you can't the Bible said that the whole Earth is filled with the glory of God we just don't realize it I don't get up in the morning and say I rebuke you devil get behind me no I get up and say Lord the whole Earth is filled with your when you live that God take God takes care of the devil come on say a good amen out there here's the problem while the whole Earth is filled with the glory of God people will not open the door to the presence of God it's there that's the Omni presence of God number two level is the Manifest Sovereign presence of God that's when God chooses to reveal himself sovereignly a time where a strange sense of God begins to Prevail over the area maybe a city a nation it happens that way it happened at the isusa Street Revival Los Angeles where that great black man of God begin to preach and the power of God Begin to Fall people begin to speak in Tong that was the beginning of the outpour of the Holy Spirit In Our Generation but then after that it kind of ebbed and went away for a while and then God raised up a place in La called Angela Temple where the great Amy mcferson built the greatest church building at that time in the world it was an architectural wonder it was was a real building much like the great building that you have here and thousands of people were came to Christ she raised more money during the war than anybody in America she was like the Billy Graham of her day thousands of people every week would come and be saved and then he kind of went away she died and 100 years later they just celebrated last year Angela Temple the power of God is now there in a great way they feed more people than she did in her greatest day they house more people than she ever housed recently the four squir acknowledged that these were the greatest years of impact on LA because of the presence of God that returned because when Matthew took it over a few years ago there were 25 people 80 and 90 years of age he was about to go under I'm talking to you about the Manifest Sovereign presence of God and people to experience will travel all over the world if if they think they can just find God and so the Beatles flew over to India to set at the feet of some bag onean in soda Arizona every year at a certain time they come to get in harmony they say with their spirit and they go m they don't hum that pretty though I'll tell you that a people will do everything to get the prence God but I got some good news how many ready for some good news right now how many promise me that you'll get happy and shock if it's good news you have a passport every one of you it is called the B come on say a good amen [Applause] you have a pass word and that word is Jus say Jesus and by the way you have an access code you know when you get in trouble what number do you dial 911 we have a 911 Psalms 911 he that dwells in the secret place shall bite in the shadow of the almighty God we have a place that we can go and we go to that place and we turn our face towards God and God turns his face towards us and starts depositing his greatness right into our being I'm talking about the Sovereign presence manifested within our lives but did you know that history is full of examples of this Sovereign manifestation of God let me give you an example or two in 1858 during the American Revival as ships Drew near the American ports a writer said they seem to become under a zone of spiritual influence ship after ship arrived at the harbors of America with the same story it went like this a sudden conviction came over them the whole ship began to throw their booze and perania into the water and they would come into a dock to the dock with the whole ship saved and the fear of God would fall upon that City and they would have Revival because here were these rchy Sailors who leave one way and they come back singing hymns and they would ask what's wrong with these people and the reply would come they said that they came into the zone now let me tell you about the Zone The Zone was about one mile under for what a reason I don't know and every ship that came into that zone people fell on their faces begin to repent and sob and cry out to God and begin to preach the gospel and I want you to know that God is the same today as he was yesterday and I want you to know when you walk on this property I declare to you that I feel like I'm in the zone in the presence of God when you walk in here you just need to look up and say thank you Lord for this church people would come all over there to attend a church like this the presence of God is in this place God has his own let me give you another illustration in 1735 Jonathan Edwards stood up in Boston and preached to the sophisticate of that City a sermon entitled sinners in the hands of an Angry God he didn't even read his sermon good he read it through thick spectacles didn't even read it good but there was such an anointing that these brilliant people of Boston dug their fingernails in the wall as they visualize himself falling in to the hands in hell of an Angry God the presence of God was there in a great way it is said that the whole town seemed to be filled with the presence of God every store every house every person the way they talk the way that they walk it is reported that the preachers were completely consumed and taken over by the holy Holy Spirit churches cancel business as usual and begin to let the Holy Spirit work in a different way children begin to have services and preach the gospel they saw signs and wonders and miracles and salvation men form prayer bades where they would stay up all night and they would pray that God would wake up the men who did not know Christ and bring them to them and men not even knowing there was a prayer me who couldn't sleep and they give get up and begin to walk and end up at the prayer meeting gloriously saved by the power of God I'm talking about a Zone but finally I want to talk about the third level it's called the personalized presence of God and that's when God Zone in on the individual that's when God zones in on you and me and to tonight God is zoning in on people in this building some of them they know they don't they're not right with God they're not Experiencing God in their life they don't know God they've never given their life but tonight when you hear the man of God stand up here and preach and you hear about this life you say if there could be a life like that I want that life I need that power I need that Comfort I need that password I need that passport I need it that personalized presence you've seen it somebody will come to this church and one person is crying and another is saying what's their problem that's when one person leaves the service and says that was the greatest service I've ever been in in my life and you're thinking did we go to the same service see what was happening God was zoning in he was zoning in on one he was encountering them and that's going on here tonight but my prayer is oh God don't just let them know about the Sovereign god of the cosmos let them know that there is a personal God don't let them when God reveals himself to just talk about what God did in Korea or Brazil or Nigeria or Pensacola or Asbury College my prayer is God come to them and clobber them with the very presence of God see Moses didn't just have a sovereign God he had a manifested god a personal experience a visitation with God he had a tent by the way his tent was called the tent of the presence a place where he could go and access that 911 do you have a place do you have a secret place that you go and pray where nobody can bother you we got a beautiful prayer Chapel in feeding sarason on the side of a mountain it never closes it's open 24 hours a day people come any time of the day but you you know what I that's not my place I used to go up there but people always caught me and wanted me to pray for them and I needed a refueling myself come on say a good amen but I have a place it's in my car every morning same old thing get up go to the grocery store go and get my old meal just like I did this morning two pieces of crispy bacon how many people like bacon if you don't like bacon you're not right with God Amen yeah I buy myself a newspaper I want to know what's going on in the world but I don't read the newspaper because I promise God I wouldn't talk to anybody in the morning but I talked to him before I even talked to my wife roll out of the bed and just say Jesus I love you help me today I eat that M meal after I've taken the Bible and I read it until I begin to burn you'll say well how long does it take sometime one chapter sometime to and then I begin to talk to God tell him how much I love him and I poured all my burdens of all the 12 to 15 boards I'm on and and all the things we need and to pray for them I have to pray for all the pastors and all these wward men there's one Pastor I pray for every single morning except Sunday morning I don't pray Sunday morning I go to church amen but there's one guy I pray for every single morning he needs a prayer and that's you're a pastor amen thank God because of bigger battles and the higher you go the lonelier it goes the more dangerous it comes and that's why you need to Every Morning Call your pastor out before God so one morning I was driving up to the church and we were building now our big building you see that holds about 4,000 to 5,000 people it was going to be the second largest church in America when it was finished and we had just put in the foundation and we run out of money No loan whatsoever tried to get a loan interest at that time was 22% all you people griping about five or six and you couldn't get it but finally we got it and I'm driving up and I'm talking to God and I'm telling him how much I love him and I thank you for the 22% love Lo that we got and then as my custom is after I talked to God I talked to Jesus and I thanked him for being willing to go to the cross I thank God because he sent his son to the cross and I begin to thank them and suddenly it dawned on me that I had never really had a conversation with the Holy Spirit and the Bible call the Holy Spirit the lord of the Harvest and it said pray to the Lord of the Harvest which is the Holy Spirit and I begin to weep and I turned and looked at that seat beside me and I said holy spirit I know you've been here in this car beside me apologize I probably scared you half to death many times amen but holy spirit and I be begin to weep I became so overcome I parked the car and I knelt in my seat and I put my hand over on the seat and said holy spirit please forgive me you protected me you brought things to my memory you fought my battles you protected me when I know that I could have been killed when angry Witch Doctor stood up overseas and screamed at me and ran towards me you were there and I never have acknowledge you and talk to you and it changed my life I made the Holy Spirit my prayer partner yeah I did here's what I do every morning before I go to the father I say holy spirit you're my prayer partner and before I take my request to the father I'm going run them by you you see he fillers out the dumb ones amen Holy Spirit I saw that goodlooking suit I really looked good in it cost $5,000 Holy Spirit said you don't need that suit okay Holy Spirit Holy Spirit I saw a beautiful top coat had a mink collar white mink collar I really look good at Holy Spirit said you look dumb in that thing we talk as friends you say you hear voice no but he's weeding out those stupid prayer requests and then I take my prayer partner to the father and I begin to tell him what I need and he begins to speak through me in groanings that I know not of and I tell the Holy Spirit what I really need that I didn't even know that I need that brings me so much joy I'm talking to you of another way I'm talking too many of your living beneath your privileges and while I've been teaching today many of you been saying I'd like to live under the shadow of almighty God I close with this illustration please don't miss this years ago when I was just a teenager God was using me really in a very special way across America having some of the greatest revivals and all I did was preach Hellfire and brimstone I was a Hellfire Brimstone preacher and gave allar calls and churches who had quit giving all their calls so hundreds of people come to God and I was invited to preach at the largest Assembly of God Church in Memphis Tennessee the First Assembly of God it was a very famous church at that church the Blackwood Brothers the famous quartet went to that church at that church the Stamps Quartet often attended to that church but the most famous person that ever attended that church is probably the most famous man maybe ever that lived there are places they don't know who the president of the United States is but they know who Elvis Presley is he went out for the church quartet as a teenager but they said his voice didn't blind good enough and they turned him down they had a trained Voice Choir so he want to get in the choir and they said he sing too loud and one day he went in to make a little record for his mother it was her birthday and he loved her so much and while he was making that record Colonel Parker Parker last night I said Colonel Sanders I was hungry for chicken amen yeah and Colonel Parker the promoter was there he said young men if you follow me I'll make you a star you know the rest of the story he became the idol known all over the world but he was a miserable man people who knew him in that church fell as it stayed over his house overnight they'd say he cry out in the night get up and couldn't sleep tortured he was so tortured he couldn't even go out and sing at his conferences so he took the Blackwood Brothers with him to do one thing before he went out to do it he couldn't do it he asked them to sing this song we're going to sing in a minute and then he' walk out and he would perform but he got to the place where he really couldn't even perform he was so miserable and he would stop like in Las Vegas at a big concert and he would invite the Blackwood Brothers to come out and he wouldn't even sing with them but he'd asked them come out and sing to that audience and big old tears would stream down his cheeks in this video he's not even singing he just watching and weeping roll the [Music] video spirit in [Music] [Applause] [Music] I know that is the [Music] spirit there are sweet [Applause] Expressions on [Music] [Laughter] [Applause] each and I know that is the presence of the Lord [Music] Sweet Holy [Music] Spirit sweet [Music] heav stay right here with us filling us with your love [Music] for blessing we make heart [Music] in without aou we know that we have been when we shall hear me now closely listen poor O Elis he lived his life s surrounded by the presence of God he went to that Pentecostal Assembly of God Church s and trembled [Music] he heard the Blackwood Brothers they said he would stay up all night just singing religious songs with them it was his favorite music paor Elvis never would open his heart and say holy spirit please come in he died at 42 years of age one year older than I was and there are people in this building just like that tonight they're not famous was like that but you're surrounded you're here in this place you're in a city with a great church like this God has protected you to even live this long you could have been killed if You' walked down a block and cross the street but God saved you this is your moment so while every head is bowed every ey is closed no one is looking around this building I want to pray for you and I pray better with when I know who I'm praying for so in just a minute while every head is bowed I'm going to ask everyone in this building and please don't pass this life this is your chance this is your moment you may never have another Moment Like This we have no certainty of tomorrow but this is your night to experience the joy the presence of God so while every head is bowed every eye closed I'm going to count to the number three in just a minute to give you time to think it over and when I come to the final number three I want every man lady boy girl to put your hand up he'll say Pastor I need God I need him bad I need to experience him I need the peace and the rest and the Comfort Pastor will you just pray for me I believe we're going to have a a landslide you've been thinking about the entire service this is the moment there has to be a moment that you confess your sins to him and this is it so when I come to three I'm going to ask you to raise your hand one every head bow every eye closed no one looking around two when I say three husband if you raise your hand the whole family may come you're not just making this decision for you but your family friend friend sweetheart sweetheart when I say three if you don't mean business you'll keep your hand down but if you mean business if you want God if God spoke to you while I was preaching today when I say three all over this building hands are going to go up from the left to the right to the front to up in the loads up there I want you to put your hand up are you ready right now three raise your hand raise him all over the building raise him real C keep him up here just a minute keep him up there just a minute oh my goodness the Lord is moving here you may put him down I didn't tend to do this but I feel I must tonight there's a mammoth amount of people that raise their hand I'm going to ask you if you mean business to take one more step we're not going to ask you to come forward to the front but the Bible said we must be willing to confess before men what God God has done in our heart so in just a minute I'm going to ask every one of you that raised your hands and you that did not I'm going to ask you just to stand there you're not going to come forward but I'm going to pray we're going to pray together and this church is going to pray with you it's going to be an awesome moment if you don't mean business you'll sit there when I ask you to stand if you're ashamed of God you just not do it but if you raised your hand or you didn't but you want my prayer I want you to get to your feet right now just stand there every one of you I believe it's going to be 100% come on get up all over the building get up all over the building get up all over the building all over the building there's some of you right there that God's speaking to and over here get to your feet right now in the name of Jesus this is your moment get to your feet right now I'm going to be B up I say I command you in the name of Jesus get up this is your moment well is this beautiful remain standing I'm going to ask if you're standing beside someone or behind them or in front of them that are standing would you just reach over and put your hand on their shoulder they'll appreciate it just reach over do that just stand to your feet behind them in front of them or side of them oh the holy spirit is here today the presence of the holy spirit is here I'm going to go one step further while you're meditating right now I'm going to ask every one of you sitting beside somebody I want you to turn to them it may be the best Christian in the church but I want you to do it anyway turn to them and say is there any reason that you need to stand I'll stand with you right now when I ask I ask you to ask them please do it I don't care if it's a pastor turn to them right now and say I'll stand with you right now if you have any need remain standing just a minute longer please yes yes and get up right now to your feet stand up together stand up together and now it was for this moment that Jesus died it was this moment that God sent his son to the world it cost him his life and that's why you can come boldly to the throne of grace and accept Christ so I want everybody to join me in this prayer you standing I want you to repeat it because the moment you confess that you need Jesus and confess your sins he's going to forgive you and I want every Christian sitting there I want you to pray the prayer with me loud and strong to encourage this people I want this to be with great volume one voice together repeat these words with me dear God dear God I need a savior I need Savor I need forgiveness I need forgiveness you said that if I would ask you you said if I that you would forgive me and I believe you Lord and I repent of my sins I now give my life to you I turn my face toward you and I feel you turning your face towards me you are now my savior you are now my Lord and I'm going to raise my hands right now and I'm going to praise you Lord and I want everybody to raise your hands and I want you to get on your feet nobody leaving right now every everybody standing your feet nobody moving we've got more important business here but I want us to sing with this worship group surely the presence of the Lord is in this place and if you need healing just put your hand up right now people are going to be healed all over this place if you never experienced the indement of the holy spirit with a Heavenly language just be filled begin to sing it together and worship God together kind and follow me [Music] surely presence the presence of the Lord is in this place I can feel his mighty power sing with I need you singing with I canar the of angelss [Music] I oh sing it surely the presence of the Lord now one more time shout it out together Sur the presence of the Lord is in this place I can feel his mighty power and his PR I can feel the brush of angels wings I see glory on each surely the presence of the Lord is in this everybody raise your hands let's begin to praise God what do you say go ahead lift your voices up to God let's have a little prayer meeting right now we worship you Lord we praise you Lord we acknowledge you Lord today the angels in heaven are rejoicing and we should be rejoicing louder than them we thank you pray go ahead amen We Praise You Lord
