[Music] so in the peace of God which surpasses which is king over all other peace will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus so this morning we are in Philippians chapter 4 verses 4 through 7 what I want to talk to you about this morning is the peace that surpasses understanding the peace that surpasses understanding now this is a peace that comes from God obviously in that name the peace that surpasses understanding there's very little that I can do to actually explain it but I can't explain to you from God's Word how we receive it I can't explain to you very clearly from God's Word how we receive the peace that surpasses understanding and God will give us that peace when it seems like there shouldn't be peace that that's how it surpasses understanding it just wouldn't make sense to be in the troubles that we are and yet have a a calmness about us have a peace about us it it defies logic it defies the power of thought that we would be at peace in the midst of our problems but let me tell you a truth here a prayerless heart breeds an anxious mind a prayerless heart breeds an anxious mind I can tell you that here from this text there's certainly more that you need to do than just pray but you certainly won't get the peace of God without prayer let me say that again there's certainly more that you need to do than just pray but you certainly will not enjoy the peace of God apart from prayer we'll talk about that here as we unfold Psalm 55 verse 22 says there casts your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you he will never permit the righteous to be moved what an encouragement cast your burdens so there's not a denial in God's Word that God's people are going to have burdens things that we have to lift things that we have to lift with our heart with our emotions we're gonna have burdens jesus said in this world you will have trouble but the psalmist even says cast your burden on the Lord and he God the Lord will sustain you he will carry you through it why because he will never permit the righteous to be moved we bear the name of the Lord if you are in Christ you bear the name of the Lord he is responsible for your soul you bear his name don't you think he's gonna make his name look good I tell you God is committed to the glory of his name he will not allow the righteous to be moved but notice that there's a caveat even in that verse Psalm 55:22 cast your burden on the Lord he said well the Lord has allowed me to be moved did you obey the first part of that verse cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you he will not let or allow the righteous to be moved we have a responsibility to bring our burdens before the Lord if you know this hymn you can sing this first verse along with me I grew up singing this we'll sing it here in just a few moments as our song of invitation but it talks about the kind of friend that we have in Jesus what a friend we have in Jesus all our sins and griefs too bad what a privilege to care carry everything to God in prayer Oh what peace we often forfeit Oh what needless pain we bear all because we do not care carry everything to God in prayer how many burdens do we need lessly bear how many how many griefs and sorrows do we walk around with simply because we don't hand them off to God they say how do I hand them off to God you pray tell God about it and then in God's sovereign power God has the ability I don't know how to explain it I also don't know how to explain how God flung the Stars into the heavens and he hung them on nothing but I see the Stars I can't explain it but I know it to be true and I know that that handoff of burdens happens when we're on our knees in prayer you got a burden you're tired of carrying you're only carrying it still because you haven't given it to the Lord a prayerless heart breeds an anxious mind this four verses in this passage of Scripture here points us really to three imperatives three commands we must obey if we want the Lord to bear our burdens and to give us a peace that surpasses understanding three imperatives we must obey if we want the peace that surpasses all understanding will point those out to you here as we go in verse a4 Paul's going to talk to us about an incessant joy and incessant joy in verse five he's going to talk to us about an outward testimony in verse six he's going to talk to us about an upward dependency and then in verse 7 he's going to describe to us an incomprehensible peace that is the result the result of having an incessant joy the result of having a proper outward testimony and the result of having an upward tendency on God there's an incomprehensible peace that God rewards to those who pray but those who hearts are fully toward him look at verse 4 Paul's gonna talk about an incessant joy here we'll see this first imperative go ahead and write this down with and though many of you do take these notes write down this first command you need to obey to receive surpassing peace you must have a persistent joy in Christ to receive a surpassing peace you must have a persistent joy in Christ let's read how Paul says this verse 4 he gives us actually two commands and they assert the same thing rejoice in the Lord be glad that is take joy in your heart rejoice in the Lord always that is in everything in every circumstance rejoice in the Lord always again I will say rejoice the book of Philippians can correctly be characterized under the theme of joy having joy in the Lord you say well what does it mean to have joy in the Lord Christian that shouldn't be hard for you to understand that shouldn't be hard for you to explain let me point to you at least three passages here in the book of Philippians where Paul tells us about how we should have joy in the Lord some things that we ought to have joy in the Lord about listen to these promises these gifts that God gives us according to his good and gracious gospel Philippians 1 verse 6 Paul says this and I am sure of this that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ amen there was two people excited about that three concluding me that the one who began a good work in you he will actually complete it how many projects do we leave undone at our house don't bring it up baby how many projects do we leave undone at our house man we leave a lot that's that's it too many too many too number to me to keep track of you know that when God began a good work in you he determined from before the outset to finish that work that's not dependent on you as it's solely dependent on the grace of God and his sovereign decree to bring you on to glory you've got reason to rejoice you say man I feel like I'm falling apart right now let me tell you God's got all the pieces right where he wants them God began the work he's not losing nuts and bolts as he continues this work he's got them all on his carpenter's table and he's putting them all together in his own time and he's fitting the pieces together just as they should go now you may not be able to see it I surely can't see it but I know that it's true because God promised it to me I know that God will complete this work listen to this Philippians chapter 3 verse 20 and 21 Paul says but our citizenship is in heaven and from it we await a savior the Lord Jesus Christ who will transform our lowly body amen transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself praise God hallelujah somebody's got to get excited this morning how we going to rejoice in the Lord we don't get happy about just the simple rendering the reading of his promises our citizenship is where in heaven yes I'm a temporary citizen of this country I'm thankful to God that this is not my permanent residence amen I am a resident citizen of heaven you know what I'm waiting for while I sojourn this earth as an alien and an exile you know what I'm waiting for I'm waiting for the return of my Savior and when he returns this lowly body will be transformed in a moment in the twinkling of an eye and I will be transformed into the likeness of Christ by the same power that he will use to subject all the nations under his feet that means that there's no issues I got no problems I got no ailments I've got no brokenness I got that he can't fix and that he won't fix so how could I not rejoice in the Lord always Philippians chapter 4 verse 19 need something and my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus you think God can't provide for your need he's already promised to do so he's already promised to do so to supply every need of yours not according to your or my bank accounts but according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus an infinite bank account for whatever expenditure is needed so Paul says rejoice in the Lord always again I say rejoice you say well you've already read a lot of passages here but let me tell you that scratches the surface of God's gospel gifts doesn't it hey God God has get this into perspective God has taken people who were enemies of him who were servants of darkness who walked in darkness who loved darkness and God opened the blindness of our eyes to see the beauty of Christ and he opened the door for us to receive forgiveness and adoption as sons and daughters of God that's what God did for us not only did he adopt us into his family he gave us His Holy Spirit to seal us for that day of receipt of our eternal inheritance he has put his permanent mark on us the guarantor of our inheritance he's promised to raise us up from the dead we go to funerals of loved ones of saints that have passed on before us and we actually have the ability to get this to grieve as those who have hope whereas peoples of this world people's who are without hope they go to funerals and they are despondent and their soul is crushed but we are sorrowful yet always rejoicing so it Paul says we can go through hard times in this life understanding that this is a short time Paul says I'm sure of this that the glories that are to be revealed to us that they so far surpass the sufferings of this life it's not worth doing the comparison rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice let me ask you because Paul's gonna get to the point here in just a minute about don't be anxious for anything and that's really what we struggle with right false that's not what we struggle with that's the product what we struggle with is rejoicing in the Lord let me ask you when you have been anxious when you've been just in this inner term all you've been fretful in your heart have you taken time to remind yourself of God's good gifts through Jesus Christ I know what I tend to do what I tend to do is to try to pick the problem apart is anybody like me some people are like me and they respond analytically now are some people like this you respond emotionally and you just all just all knotted up and you just don't know what to do and you want to get upset and cry about it anybody respond like that some people the room is divided husbands and wives you know how this is but you know what emotionalism doesn't fix the problem analysis doesn't fix the problem but you know what we fail to do in our emotional reaction and then our our analysis what we fail to do is just pause first I can say let me remember here for just a moment what Jesus did for me I'm not even gonna think about my problem because there's something far greater than that I'm gonna remember what Jesus did for me I'm going to recite the promises of God I'm going to recall the victories of God I am gonna take a moment rather than worry I'm gonna take a moment to rejoice in the Lord again I'm gonna say rejoice maybe sometimes we get anxious about things because that's all we look at we never take our eye off the issue and put our eye where it should be on the Lord he says rejoice in the Lord always again I say rejoice now Paul's told us that to receive a surpassing peace we must have a persistent joy in Christ let me to ask you this if you if you have a job offer on the table and you got your hopes set on that job offer it was gonna be great and that job offer fell through and it's suddenly not so great let me ask you is Jesus still Lord may ask you is he's still gonna raise your body from the dead are you still a child of God rejoice and again I'll say rejoice what happens if this this next election cycle doesn't go your way or what about this what if the elect a Lexington cycle is in Jesus are you still a child of God have your sins been forgiven you gonna be raised up from the dead all right rejoice in the Lord again I say rejoice people get in utter turmoil about election cycles my word I wish we'd worry that much about our neighbors who don't know Jesus rejoice in the Lord always you have to have a persistent joy in Christ so we have an incessant joy look at verse 5 we need to make sure we procure our outward testimony verse 5 he says let your reasonableness your gentleness your forbearance your kindness your Sensibility let your reasonableness be known to everyone warning the Lord is at hand Paul says not only should you should you inwardly remind yourself of God's gospel gifts you need to make sure that outwardly before other people you're taking care of your life you need to make sure that you are maintaining a proper testimony imperative to that we need to observe here to receive surpassing peace you must have a proper testimony before others he says let your reasonableness be known to all to everyone why the Lord is at hand you ever felt anxiety because you did something wrong we got one we got one honest person in here you ever felt anxiety because you did something wrong you ever felt that hot burning sensation down the back of your neck anybody or is it just me anybody seen though anybody seen those police lights go on behind them they see it and you just suddenly get this hot flash and you're like all man I did it you got peace at that moment at that moment what's your anxiety level why I did something wrong I'm guilty before the law and I'm guilty before God my anxiety shoots through the roof that's why we ought to drive speed limits why we ought to obey the law that's why we ought to have a proper testimony before others to receive surpassing peace you must have a proper testimony before others he says let it be known let your reasonableness your gentleness your kindness the work of Christ in you let it be known let it be evident and obvious to who not just to your family let it be known to everyone not just our church family in Sunday school let it be known at work your reasonableness that God not only forgave you of your sins but he actually made you into a new person he made you into a new person he filled you with His Holy Spirit and born out in you are the fruit of the Spirit love and joy and peace and patience I'm going through all of them and kindness and gentleness and faithfulness and self-control let people see this and you know what when people see the work of God in you and you have no reason to be guilty and ashamed before others in other words you are blameless before other people guess what that will alleviate that will alleviate so much anxiety that we have because of our wrongdoing just live the life God has commanded you and I to live and it alleviates so much anxiety that we might feel we don't have to wonder if we're gonna be chased down we don't have to wonder if we're gonna be found out we don't have to wonder if somebody is going to uncover our dirt why because we live in private the way that we live in public we live as though we live before God Almighty so we let our reasonableness be known to everyone why because in the end their opinions don't matter in the end Paul says the Lord is at hand the imminent return of Christ is upon us we don't have time to get wrapped up in sinful things we don't have time to get entangled in so many things like the Hebrew writer says so many things that would trip us up in this walk of faith we don't have time to do that the Lord is at hand listen to how Paul told us that our reasonableness should be lived out Philippians chapter 2 verse 1 through 5 he says so if there is any encouragement in Christ any comfort in from love any participation in the spirit any affection and sympathy complete my joy by being of the same mind as unity in the body having the same love being in full Accord and of one mind do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit but in humility count others more significant than yourselves let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others have this mind among yourselves which is yours in Christ Jesus you know what he does for the remainder of that passage and Philippians 2 he tells you how Jesus as the Son of God humbled himself to the point of death even death on a cross and Paul says that ability is yours because of Jesus you have the ability to walk in complete obedience to the Lord and humility before other peoples so let your reasonableness be known to everyone because the Lord is at hand that will alleviate at least 33% of our anxiety we take our eyes off the problem and we have a persistent joy in Christ we're suddenly free of some anxiety we live a reasonable life in front of other people have no reason to be called guilty it relieves so much more of our anxiety and our worries and our let's listen to how Paul our actually Peter the Apostle Peter paints such a vivid picture about the return of the Lord and how his return ought to motivate us to live reasonable holy lives listen to the 2nd Peter chapter 3 verse 10 through 12 the Apostle Peter writes but the day of the Lord will come like a thief and then the heavens will pass away with the roar and the heavenly bodies all our worries will be burned up and dissolved and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed since all these things are thus to be dissolved what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn friends what sort of people ought we to be living lives of holiness and godliness the Lord is at hand that anxiety that you may feel that if somebody catches me this is going to be bad it can be relieved if we just stop doing that miss suma Paul says first John 2 verse 28 rather not Paul John he says and now little children abide in him so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink back from him and shame at his hiding the holy life will alleviate so much anxiety amen now look at verse 6 not only do we need an incessant joy and an outward testimony we need to have an upward dependency an upward dependency right down this third imperative to receive surpassing peace you must have a prayerful a prayerful dependence on God a prayerful dependency look at what he says here in verse six he says in a brand-new sentence he says do not be anxious about anything but in everything by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God and be anxious about nothing don't be anxious about any sort of thing that comes up you say well what is anxiety anxiety is needless worry nepal's not telling people that that we don't need to have concern we do need to have concern for our life and and for what we do we need to be careful about it but there's a difference there's a difference between the care of diligence and the care of distrust the care of diligence says I need to get up and go to work tomorrow amen five workers in here the care of diligence says I need to get up and go to work tomorrow amen amen amen then you go to work tomorrow the care of distrust says if I don't make everything perfect if I don't take care of everything it's all gonna fall apart life is gonna crumble I've got to be the one that does it that's the care of distrust sounds Noble sounds like someone wanting to be responsible but it's really somebody trying to carry burdens they were never meant to bear there's a difference between the care of diligence and the care of distrust anxiety is fretfulness being tied up in knots about problems you're not even sure about and solutions you're not even aware of it's being ruled by worry being ruled by concern having worried govern you and everything that you do if worry is your God how can Jesus be your Lord - Paul says do not be anxious about anything but he uses the strongest adversative particle in the Greek be anxious about nothing but this is how you handle problems have you trials and temptations are there troubles anywhere we must never be discouraged take it to the Lord in prayer he says but rather than being anxious he says in everything in every circumstance by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God another command let your requests be made known to God and how do we do that we do it in three ways here prayer supplication and Thanksgiving what is prayer prayer is a conversation that we have with God let's try not to be too spiritual about it prayer is a conversation that we have with God pursue K is the word used generally for prayer now in a conversation with God so rather than talking to everybody else about this problem about this concern rather than talking to everybody else make it this way that the first person you talk to about it is Jesus that the problem happens and you don't say man I need I need to call my spouse now I need to call my dad I need I need to call my friend I need to call my mom and I need to talk to them about this I need them to give me answers about this spouse dad mom friend not God it may be good to have counselors but there is one counselor who has all the answers and maybe according to God's Word the first place that we ought to go is to the throne room of heaven they said God I'm worried about this God I'm concerned about this surely Lord this didn't catch you off-guard but Lord it hit me it hit me out of nowhere I don't know what to do but God you know guess what when you tell your your dad your mom your friend your spouse guess what it's gonna surprise them too God's the only person that you can talk with it about and it's not surprise him and he's also the only one you can talk to about with about that issue and he had the ability to solve it so he says but in everything by prayer pro cyka this general conversation with God and then he says and supplication dieses it's talking about a begging with a with a humble and a brokenness a humble heart a brokenness in your heart you are begging and pleading with God this has moved beyond a casual conversation if there is such a thing that we have with the Lord and this is more of getting on my face before the Lord and saying God I am broken and crushed I've got nothing to offer you I can't solve this problem Lord I'm just begging you to do something I'm pleading with you I'm nothing and you are everything Paul says we need to come to God that way sometimes we need to move beyond a casual conversation and we need to get on our face and just beg and plead we need to be like that persistent Widow in Luke 18 1 through 8 when you said God give me justice God give me help god I don't know where this is going to come from and you hear the worry in my voice and you see the trembling in my soul I need your help Paul says it's okay to do that it's okay to do that when we give that to God let me tell you what worry is worries what happens when we refuse to pray worry is what happens when we refuse to pray it's the result of bottling up concerns and burdens into our heart but let me tell you what prayer is prayer is the opening of that bottle and the pouring out of concerns to God that's what prayer is we feel anxious we feel all this pressure in our heart like we're going to explode and we don't know what to do if you will take that prayer that concern that supplication to the Lord it will relieve that anxiety he says but in everything by prayer and by supplication with Thanksgiving so prayer is talking to God about the the everyday things of life supplication is begging God for the things that we need desperately Thanksgiving is the recognition of the things that God has already done notice that Paul doesn't leave that part out talk to God about everyday concerns talk to God about the things you desperately need but hey don't forget all the other prayers that God has already answered why don't we take a moment to count our blessings name them one by one count your many blessings see what God has done and when we see that God has answered so many prayers through the years we didn't think there was a solution God solved it God provided what does that do to anxiety and the things of Earth they go strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace we suddenly we suddenly go you know what God you've done it in the past you do it again I've got I've got faith in you I've got trust that you are able to do it again to be prayerfully dependent you need to be three things write these three down they all start with an R for easy recall to be prayerfully dependent number one you must refuse to worry do not be anxious about anything when you feel that anxiety coming on take every thought captive and say no no Lord I will not be anxious refused to worry but don't stop there refuse to worry number two reach out to God in prayer that didn't say reach out to mom or dad or friend or spouse reach out to God in prayer refuse to worry reach out to God in prayer and number three remember his blessings remember his blessings and it will calm and soothe that anxious heart that you have he says but in everything by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God now listen to the result listen to the result here of a persistent joy in Christ a proper testimony before others a prayerful dependency on God listen to this promise verse seven and the peace of God not the peace of man you know you know how the world tries to provide peace counselling let's let's talk our way through this let's talk our way through this and let's get it all out there in the open and it will make us feel better is there a place for counselling Amen yes there is I thank God for good Christian counselors but counselling cannot ultimately do the work of God counselling is a work of man that's why I must be Christian counseling it must be on God's behalf but this is a solution of the world is to talk about it talk about it with a bunch of people and really all that does is it involves other people in the problem we like to talk about it we like to distract ourselves from it we may distract ourselves from it with entertainment bins watching TV or or whatever program you like to watch her or or maybe we like to distract ourselves from it with with comfort eating we distract ourselves by by having all these different flavors and tastes and filling our stomach or maybe maybe some which we try to comfort ourselves through different substances go where you will with that but do any of these things actually bring comfort do any of these things actually bring respite from worry they don't they actually make the problems even worse they exacerbate things refused to worry reach out to God in prayer remember his blessings and he says and the peace of God not the peace of man and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding it surpasses all understanding that word for understanding noon it's the word for the power of thinking the cognitive abilities there is a peace that comes from God that is far greater than any thought you could ever think up any thought that any counselor could ever give you any distorted thought that a substance could ever create in you there is a peace from God that surpasses that word for surpasses is used often of rulers in Greek literature and it's talking about the ruler that is above all rulers the ruler that is chief over all other authorities you can pursue peace down a thousand different avenues but there is a king of peace and the king of peace is God Almighty he's the one who can truly put our arts at rest he says in the peace of God which surpasses which is king over all other peace will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus you know what the heart is the heart and Hebrew understanding is the seat of the emotions the mind is the seat of the intellect we talked just a minute ago about people who respond analytically and people who respond emotionally people who respond with the heart and people who respond with the mind neither one of them is ultimately going to be the solution to the problem it says no when we do these three things find our joy in Christ live a righteous life before others and then depend prayerfully on God and we do all these things there is a supernatural all-sufficient peace from God that guards our emotions and our thoughts guards us in Christ Jesus says by prayer come before God and he says don't miss this one word and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard will guard that same verb is used there in 1st Peter chapter 1 it's used elsewhere in Greek literature you know that word is actually a militaristic term will guard it gives this mental picture of a of a soldier of a warrior armed to the teeth fighting to protect fighting on behalf of someone it says in the peace of God the surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus this peace let me tell you peace is the warrior of God that guards the hearts of those pray peace is the warrior of God that guards the hearts of those who pray your heart fill unguarded is your heart feel like it's in knots and it's full of anxiety have you gone to the Lord in prayer have you talked to him about the general concerns have you begged and pleaded about the things that are that are worrying you and have you remembered the things that he's already done if you do that God is no liar God will come through on his word and his peace will stand in your heart as a warrior defending you from emotional distress it'll defend you from mental angst will guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus a prayerless heart breeds an anxious mind let me remind you though isaiah 26 verse 3 listen to this carefully you keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you you keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you I don't want to have a life or a heart or mind characterized by anxiety so you know what I need to be characterized by an incessant joy a proper testimony and an upward dependency on God if those things characterize my life I think God's peace will guard me like a soldier now there are some there are many hopefully in here that you've experienced the peace of God your experience the peace of God when you've gotten on your knees and you prayed and maybe you got up from your knees and you still had no answer but you had peace amen I've certainly experienced that but let me tell you that that's a good from God that he only gives to his children that is a gift from God peace is a gift from God that he only gives to those who have called on his son Jesus in faith and said Jesus you're the son of God Jesus you lived a perfect life you died for my sins and you were raised up from the dead you are Lord of all and your Lord of my life I trust in you let me tell you if your trust is not in Jesus you cannot receive peace from God until you have been brought to peace with God you cannot receive peace from God until you've been brought to peace with God you can be brought to peace with God by a simple prayer and by a childlike faith see Jesus you're the son of God and I believe in you would you take my sins away i I don't want to feel anxious about being judged any more by you I don't want to be anxious about dying I don't want to be anxious about going to hell Lord would you just forgive me and God will forgive you and he'll make you brand new and he'll give you the gift of everlasting life and as a proof that he has saved you he will put his Holy Spirit inside you and you will begin to see the proof of God's presence in your life you'll begin to see that proof lived out daily you're you're suddenly your reasonableness will begin to be known to all people and suddenly is your joy is found in Jesus you're gonna find the cares of this earth growing strangely dim and as you get on your knees to pray before God you are going to him not as a person scared of condemnation but now you get to plead with your heavenly father and you get to actually pray the way Jesus commanded you my father in heaven hallowed be your name you're my father but you can't receive peace from God until you have peace with God in just a moment we have a time to respond if you need to have peace with God if you need to call out to Jesus in faith and give your life to Him and begin walking with Him what I'm gonna ask you to do is to come forward and to speak with me Christian maybe you have been brought to peace with God but this morning you need peace from God let me tell you you're not going to get peace from God by singing songs you're gonna begin to get peace from God by bowing your knees thank god I've got concerns and I've got worries they're too big for me but Lord they must be small to you Lord would you take my burdens I've cast my burdens on you knowing that you will not let the righteous be moved would you pray with me [Music]
