message there's a new video left and you never never anything that's really I'm getting good at this now you're getting good at the formalities and they're now out of the way yeah so let's dive right into the Norwegian Pearl [Music] okay so let's talk about pearl Carlos you did some purling in our on a trip in America or tour in America in 2090 yes and a lot of people said that the way you do it was really easy to understand well that's because I like making these mantras if you followed our previous episode the Norwegian knit remember what I said you need to hold your hand or your needle comfortably in your hand you put the yarn over the finger you anchor it with your middle finger you pinch and if your finger it starts rising you pull the emergency cord this one here so finger down in case of an emergency pull the cord and these kind of things tend to stick into people's hands so in case of an emergency pull the cord lots of people will now be very conscious about the fact that they need to keep the finger down now when we teach Norwegian knitting and Norwegian purling the number one thing that everybody has to realize is if the finger is not down then it's not Norwegian knitting or purling the finger must be done at any time when you need and that's the whole point of the way we need and we seen a lot of strange Norwegian pearls on YouTube because there are like fingers up in the air and their yarn wrapped around fingers and like if a Norwegian litter or especially a older like a person who's mid the traditional style they will find it very strange yeah have a good laugh I guess I think so so people that do the whole putting the finger or wrapping the yarn around their finger and then maybe they want to wrap it there too these kinds of things can actually cause a lot of tension in your muscles and it's the short way to tendinitis so please consider releasing these fingers and putting them down because it will be more comfortable for you so the ideal way is that the finger goes on the needle the yarn goes over the finger you're anchoring the yarn gently and do not at any I do anything like that because then again you're straining your muscles try to keep your hand relaxed on a needle that is the main point and then Carlos what is the like what's the good thing with Norwegian Pearl when you go from purl 2 knit well you said it once and you've said it I think you've said it many times and I'm afraid to say it because maybe honor will slap a copyright that's a lawsuit on me but what is it you say about the Norwegian Pearl oh no I was it that's like a Norwegian Pearl like when you do it the right way it's like a dance exactly and be careful because he may actually copyright this he said it so many times I don't want to say that but yeah Ana's right but you know what if it's like a dance it's a cha-cha-cha there is a nice rhythm to it that is exactly like a cha-cha-cha and that's why the finger should be down because you have that finger up in the air you also move the finger and then there's no rhythm yeah so follow me now let's do the cha-cha-cha together and explain how you do it and I'll explain how I do the Norwegian Pearl so again taking the yarn or sari taking the needle put it in your hand comfortably you pinch the right needle with your index finger and your thumb and you take the yarn you put it over the finger and you anchor the yarn onto the hand like that so that's the way you do the holding and then you in starting position you want to take your thumb and put it over on the left needle and then you can start knitting I think I need to knit a couple of undo a couple of knits before I can do my chart we'll just do a cha-cha-cha and toppled on it no I'm gonna do to knit wanna make then that is a recap from last time remember you take your needle and you pick up the stitch you pull it towards the yarn and you just slide it take the needle pull it towards the towards the yarn and then just slide it like that so that's the knit now for the purl we're gonna do the cha-cha-cha it means that we're doing the purl in three separate movements and these three movements will create a fabulous rhythm that once you get the hang of the knit and purl you are going to love it's a little bit more complicated than the per than the knit but it's not difficult it's really easy as soon as you get the rhythm okay Carlos let's do the purl or show me how your purl I'll do that the cool thing about the Norwegian Pearl is you don't need to bring the yarn forward for a lot of other pearls the yarn needs to go forward but here we don't need to do that instead we take our needle and we go under the yarn like that and through the back of the stitch like that that is movement number one when we do that we have a cross here suddenly it the two needles are in the shape of the cross so what I want to do in movement number two is I want to change positions of the needles in the cross and I do it like that and as I do that I also wrap the yarn on to the needle you grab the yarn from the finger again yes and that's important to go under yes if you go over what happens if you go over twist yes you twist the stitch you have to go under so anyway we got the position of the cross again and now I want to go back to the initial position of the needles in the cross I want this needle to go up and this needle to go down and as I do that I keep moving and then I kind of leave from the same place I came like that releasing the needle like so and again you saw now when you went out you did it the perfect way because sometimes when people do this they come out on the wrong side of yarn and then you're actually making a yarn over at the same time so people end up in very more stitches so let me do it a couple of times and let me show you how I do it and let me say my mantra yeah I think you're doing it really good Karl thank you thank you okay so let's go I take my needle I go under the yarn and I harpoon the stitch from the back until I get this cross position I change positions of the cross and I wrap the yarn around the needle and then I change positions of the cross again I go out the same place I came and when I release the stitch I have the Norwegian Pearl now we do a couple of knits and I've seen some comments that were like someone from Norway said that they thought this was a local way of doing it because they move the yarn to the front when they purl but I have to say this is not local this is a very old way of doing it because we've been around a lot in Norway and most of the knitters we meet they purl this way yeah some people actually move the yarn to the front but what happens in many times is that when you move the yarn to the front and purl from that side you also make a twisted stitch yeah and you don't want that you don't want it so let's say recap also I want to say something one of the problems people get when they're trying to do this for the first time is that they have a little bit of difficulty controlling the stitches but remember when you are just and and what happens is that these stitches end up in the tip of the needle and if you have all these stitches in the tip of your needle you're gonna struggle remember because you're sliding the stitches with the needles in Norwegian way of knitting you can allow yourself a little bit of leeway from the part of the needle where the stitch starts until the tip of the needle get a couple of centimeters leeway and still you can slide the stitches in and out in and out without a problem so let me do my mantra again I take my needle I go under the yarn and I go through the stitch from the back creating a cross change positions of the cross wrap change positions of the cross go out through the same hole where I came from like this you want to make sure when you're doing this you want to make sure that when you go out the needle is on the left side so that once you release it it goes like that there is a big risk of making one mm when you knit this way let me just do a couple of knits so if you go under harpoon the stitch from the back change positions of the cross wrap and then when you go out if you go out like that and then just release the stitch you have made one a lot of new beginners do not yeah and you don't want that so you always have to make sure that you go under the stitch and also under the yarn on your way out so let's do it again go under the yarn through the stitch change positions of the cross wrap and then you change positions of the cross but now you continue going out the way you came go under the stitch and then under the needle like that and release and now I'm going to show you why it is a cha-cha-cha so so now you want to go from knit to purl yeah so knit is one knit so that's like a simple and then when you do the purl you do the cha-cha-cha right now ChaCha you're too quick you have to make it slower cars well yeah I'm gonna but you know there is this little wheel that you can use in case it gets slower but anyway one knit and then you've got the cha-cha-cha one it cha-cha-cha and that's how you just the dance South American side of you who comes out now I guess so yeah he got the rhythm I guess I do okay so Carlos if you think you move your needles too much do you have any tips yeah if you're moving your needles too much you're working a bit high with your needle here so what we recommend is you go a little bit lower that way you will move your hand less remember go under the stitch through the needle to create the cross change positions of the cross and wrap and then change positions of the cross again and now go same direction you came from and go out the way you came so you work more under the needle on the right side by pulling the needle on the left side of it down when you purl yep so that's a good tip yes that's a good tip so remember too much because it's a lot of work so I'm gonna do a final recap of both the knitting and the purling remember finger down all the time at end any cost anchored with a middle finger in case your needle or your finger starts rising in the air in case of an emergency pull the cord and keep pulling that cord until your finger is down and then it's like a dance you do one knit you do one knit and then you're gonna do the pearls in a cha-cha-cha movement number one movement number two movement number three movement number one movement number two movement number three and that is how you do the purl the knit is a simple movement like this like this and then the purl movement number one movement number two movement number three release so remember under the yarn through the stitch from the back movement number one movement number two change positions of the needles in the cross and wrap at the same time movement number three go back to the original position of the needles in the cross and then go out the way you came you cannot forget this now because I have created a mantra for you to say every time you're gonna be doing this in no time and you'll be having fun doing the Norwegian knitting and purling which is the Norwegian cha-cha-cha and please let us know if you think it's easier to understand this time it would be fun to know yeah people remember easier and remember we're not having a competition here over who's best and if you like our nest way because you feel he teaches better that's fine if you prefer my way that's fine so I think it's just giving you all a new alternative and a new way of saying your mantra and a new way of thinking of how to do the Norwegian knit and purl and remember most important finger down in case of an emergency pull the cord so I think that people will hopefully have now learned from me as well yes so a second point of view we hope you've enjoyed this tutorial and maybe he will be back with more yeah I think that we're gonna do one more revisited tutorial and talk a little bit about the increase next time so stay tuned you don't want to miss that okay okay thank you so much for watching and see you again next time bye [Music]
