after having a failure on one of my Baja Designs lights I decided that when I'm going to test those against these Harbor Freight lights the most important test to me is going to be a durability test it's going to be how will these lights stand up to the conditions that we have here in the Pacific Northwest cuz these are going to live on the vehicle outside the vehicle they're not in a garage so I want to know that they're going to be able to live up to the expectations that we have here living in a climate that's just so wet for like 9 months out of the Year oh don't float on me don't float don't float so with the lp 6s that I have on my Land Rover one of them is Fogg it up I now I've installed a lot of LP 6s and I haven't seen any failures except for this one that I can think of and it's kind of my fault it was getting foggy behind the lens like right away right after I installed it and it like went through its first rainstorm and I should have done something about it and I never did I imagine even to this day you could probably get a hold of Baja Designs like I have an issue let them know send them pictures and they would probably take care of it that's what's nice about working with a company like that um but I haven't done so what it's done is it's motivated me to test these two with their water resistance actually being underwater here in the Pacific Northwest we get an insane amount of rain and it is for very very long periods of time these lights are going to live outside so I'm curious like can we simulate a full season of Rain by just submerging these in a fish tank for a little while I don't know but I do want to find out both Baja Designs and roadshock Edge claim a certain level of waterproofness we'll say with these lights I imagine that they're both assembled with some specialized O-rings that aren't really o shaped they're more light shaped and after playing with both lights I can see that they use the exact same style like weatherproof wiring connection which I'm a huge fan of this style I think it's great that they're both using this and for our test I'm thinking I'm just going to submerge these for like 30 minutes or so that should be able to tell us if water is going to get in through like a bolt hole or through the electrical connection or something and make it to where these are foggy and probably longterm ruin the [Music] [Applause] light let's try to inspect and see if we have any water getting these housings or any fog starting to accumulate they look good right now but what I want to do is it's going to be super hot and sunny today I'm going to go sit these out in the sun for an hour or two and I want to see if any fog starts to appear behind the lens cuz I think I mean even if like one drop of water gets back in there if we get these hot they're going to start to fog up and then we'll know if there's been a failure already I would throw both of these lights in like the high-end lighting category I mean I've always thought of bajad is like absolute top of the Heap and I'm also a little bit blinded by the fact that I think that Baja Designs has always made the best looking housings so when you're not even using your light they just look really good these have a very similar style but are clearly not like a knockoff or just like a wh labeled rebranded product or anything like that it's a very goodlook light from Harbor Freight and so now it's time to slap the Amber cover on it because Amber is my favorite style of off-road light and then run out to the barn at night and do an actual side by-side comparison from a few different angles so you can really get an idea of what the difference is between these two lights whenever you're using them at night Baja Designs test one high beam Harbor Freight test one high beam [Music] [Applause] for my light test I wanted to do one light at a time not like an array mounted on a vehicle and I wanted to do it in the air so I could do it you know like from the Second Story of my barn just felt like a good way to get a good idea of the spectrum of light without it like reflecting off of a hood or anything like that I wanted the least amount of interference and holy cow can you tell a difference between these two lights the baj designs is definitely brighter um and this is measured in lumens you can actually see that they're physically uh brighter whenever you go online and you actually look at the output of each light but you can physically see that it's brighter in these images even though I'm shooting this at night and honestly in some in some ways this is better and worse if you look at it side by side you can see that the B isign is clearly brighter but you almost lose some definition or something like there is is it too bright is that what I'm looking at is there some sort of a spectrum thing that's going on here um so I think that maybe application would help you choose which ones of these lights you would like I think for most of it it's going to be budget right but if you wanted to get a high performance light to race with I would bet that the more of a spot style light you're getting out of the Baja design lp6 would be able to throw light way farther down the desert um however if that's not what you're doing I kind of like the look of the Harbor Freight light a little bit better just because it does feel like I'm picking up some more definition in what I can physically see and make out with my eyes another interesting thing that's happening is some of this light is being like it's being cast around okay some of the light is being cast around the light that is The roadshock Edge lights and if you look at this cover you can see that light is kind of broadcasting almost behind the light as well because it's being carried by the cover it's really interesting to see in person um this could be good or bad I don't know I mean it's definitely not something you would I imagine that if you had these mounted like one on each a pillar on on a fender this could be bad because it could be casting light kind of like through your windshield a little bit because it's coming around these uh covers however it's not like it's casting a ton of it so again probably application and vehicle specific just depending on what you're trying to do another quick test that I did while I was up here is I just put my hand in front of the beam to see if I could feel heat because if you've seen my channel before you know that I love snow wheeling and it's really important to me that lights keep clean in a blizzard because I've used a bunch of of Cheapo Amazon lights before that they just they aren't hot enough and they get coated with ice they get coated with snow and with the lp 6s my experience is that they produce plenty of heat through the beam on the front of the lens and they just they stay clear I haven't had an issue with them icing over or anything like that and I'm happy to report in this test I could feel plenty of heat coming off of either light I just did a quick check to see which one of these lights is using more juice and it's so similar that it's not even worth bringing up I was thinking maybe maybe this was another angle to consider before you buy off-road lights it's like how much alternator do you have that is something you should consider but it's not going to make her break whether or not you go Harbor Freight or Baja Designs I'm curious on the reaction to this video and the other ones like it that are like showing and demonstrating the performance of these Harbor Freight lights for me I'm like many of you you know there we've got inflation we've got all these other economic things going on you want to get the most bang for your buck Harbor Freight has clearly been doing the research at who shops in their stores and they have come out with this they just keep expanding their offering to where they are really cornering these different markets with big performance for like half the money depending on what it is in the off-road space they're trying to Target so this is extremely competitive I think that it's going to shake up the lighting industry quite a bit however if I was racing if if I'm off-road racing I'm going to be racing at night and I want to win I am definitely going to try to figure out a way to Pony up the money for the Baja Designs lights they are definitely brighter they definitely like shine farther from what I can tell and if I was that serious about winning I would probably shoot an email try to get hold of a Baja Designs engineer try to get set up with like the right spectrum of lighting and all that other stuff to make sure that I don't pil up my race car in the middle of the night and I have the best visibility so I have the best chance at winning for the rest of us that aren't race car drivers I I think that it's kind of hard to pass the Harbor Freight light and then opt up to the Baja Designs or rigid or another like premium light brand like that so what do you think is this going to lower the cost is this going to put enough pressure on the premium light brands that they're going to have to bring their cost down or they going to have to innovate and make it to where you're getting more bang for your buck with their offering in any case we as the consumers win competition is good I love seeing the Bronco come out I love seeing you know different companies trying to put pressure on the other companies that are cornering a market it we win as consumers so that's how I look at this this is my first video in the new shop I hope that you guys enjoyed it but it's we're not done here we're going to have a video all about the shop I've made a so much progress since the last time I did a shop video update but my plan is here in about two weeks when I get this shop completely done we're going to do a full walk through I have so many ideas and so many things that I want to try to do in here uh before we get started on all the big Automotive projects that are coming up here next month so I hope you enjoyed the video I hope to see you on the next one
