[Music] that'll wake you up man that is quick [Music] look owning a high performance car can be a real pain in the ass this is a story about the ford mustang mach 1 which we'll get to in a moment but for some context i want to introduce you to my dodge viper first it's cool and fast and attracts a crowd but you can hardly see a thing out of it meaning that parking is often stressful the driver feels less informed and more vulnerable in relation to their surroundings and doing a lane change requires a thorough investigation be launched before you can think of touching that blinker elsewhere in 2008 dodge viper srt10 land the fuel consumption is spectacular and the ride on real-life roads with potholes and frost use and manhole covers prompts a wince inducing roller coaster ride to rattleville for the interior parts as well as your spine look i love this scarf and i've driven one for eight years and i'll probably always have one i'm just saying it's a pain in the ass sometimes which is why we tend to drive cars like this only on special occasions the mustang mach 1 is an interesting contrast it's the ultimate 5-liter mustang like the viper the mach 1 is touched by carol shelby's influence thanks to the use of some shelby source parts and tweaks from the now retired shelby gt350 still despite rocking the most extensive collection of hardcore hardware ever fitted to a 5.0 the mach 1 has a surprisingly easy going side too if the mustang mach 1 might be your very first high performance car take it from me this easy going side matters and it might even be the mach 1's most valuable asset first the shifter and clutch are excellent careful fine tuning sees a nice balance struck on one hand the shifter and clutch are both heavy demanding and precise as an enthusiast driver expects you need a bit of muscle to operate both a good press for the clutch a good tug for the shifter but the clutch is smooth nicely hinged and operates with an eager give once you get past its leverage point it's very easy to modulate as a result which makes it easier to learn easier to get in sync with and easier to control everything feels polished and smooth within the mechanism there's nothing sharp nothing bitey it's refined it feels great when worked hard and it shouldn't wear you out in traffic and altogether the action of this system as a mechanism feels high-end and polished it's better than any european manual transmission in recent memory if i'm honest oh it's so good so that's one reason the mach 1 is more enjoyable to drive more of the time another the visibility like a porsche 911 it's a fast car that you can see out of that's not always the case for racy machines but when it is the cabin feels more open and less crowded unlike a challenger or camaro sitting in the mach 1 doesn't get you a face full of dashboard the windows are taller as a result and compared to driving something like say the viper i'm more comfortable and more easily able to gather good information about my surroundings in turn this puts my brain at ease instead of on alert that's another reason the mustang mach 1 is more enjoyable to drive more of the time number three ride comfort specifically the mach 1's trick magnet powered suspension system does some fantastic work for its handling but also the same tech enables some remarkably good manners on rougher road surfaces on a few very rough local roads that i frequent as a ride quality exercise the mach 1 was astonishingly good even handling bumpy roads better than many crossover suvs when it comes to body motion control and how much harshness is transmitted back into the cabin in the viper i grit my teeth driving over these roads in the mach 1 it's pretty drama free whatever's going on beneath it feels like the full capabilities of the mach 1's intelligent suspension system have been deployed towards both performance and ride comfort keeping context in mind of course now look the mach 1 is not a comfort oriented car the steamroller tires hunt and grab for every lump in the road the steering can feel nervously quick in some situations and thanks to the caterpillar scraping front splitter there's a constant source of anxiety until you get used to splitters for the first time there's no way in heck you're clearing a standard curve with this what's for comparison like this is a galaxy what eight or nine smartphone this is a kind of a bigger model but it wouldn't even clear one of those and i'm sure timmy's is probably even taller than that when parking tires can drag and spring coils can bind and snap adding some drama to the situation that owners will chalk up to race car stuff ditto the sometimes excessive tire noise and near-constant low-speed sand blasting characteristic of sticky sporty tires that pick up sand and fling it everywhere you're doing a tight turn at a low speed you can actually hear some of the noises from the front suspension that are kind of typical of a race car one of your signs that this is a hardcore performance experience there's nothing wrong with the way that sounds also race car stuff the brain sucking snarl of the 32 variable valves slicing and dicing the intake and exhaust streams on route to the better part of 7 500 rpm no turbo chargers equipped this engine loves to spin fast sounds great doing it and is feeling increasingly special and engaging as more machines like this add turbo charging and hybrid tech to their performance drivelines nope what we've got here is a gorgeous example of an all-motor v8 engine that's built to put on a hell of a show while powering a hardcore performer with a surprisingly friendly everyday drive some of the different ways the mach 1 makes it really easy for you to customize just about anything about the driving experience and how much control that you have over this car's systems right here at the tips of your fingers it sort of starts here with the mustang button we press that and up here on the instrument cluster got my mode which allows you to custom design your own uh particular drive mode how you like exhaust mode so four settings to choose from here the first three of those are street legal so we've got to turn that off actually we can't be driving around on public roads with the exhaust and track mode it can get us in trouble launch control and which rpm that you want to use for that depending on the surface that you're on auto rev match i prefer to leave that off of course six speed manual there so i want to see cylinder head temperature and air fuel ratio i can just pull those ones up and there they are gives us full control so that covers us controlling how the information is displayed now let's get into how we control the actual driving experience of the car we have got some hard switches down here so uh traction control steering mode and drive mode and these just flip up and toggle i'm toggling between sport steering comfort searing and normal steering sport steering being sort of stiff heavy and quick comfort steering being sort of light and lazy and you know perfect for a highway cruise and normal being kind of somewhere in between next we have the mode switch so we've got normal my mode which we would customize sport plus track mode drag strip mode and a wet weather snow and ice kind of mode there and of course just the normal mode that's kind of your one size fits all my favorite is the steering set to go kart and the exhaust wide open with auto rev match switched off for manual heel and toe work just as steve mcqueen intended dialed in like this mustang mach 1 is a serious grin generator and speeding ticket generator if you're not careful [Music] that is exactly what i'm gonna do when i bring this back is cry they're gonna need to get a six-foot pry bar to detach my hands from the steering wheel of this thing i think but i've still got a few more days and uh there's a little bit of rubber left on the tires too so making the mustang mach 1 as enjoyable to drive as possible means drivers are more likely to use their car more often and that's a higher return on investment if you're an in-market shopper considering a mustang mach 1 i think that you'll find it satisfies the desire for high performance thrills and sensations first and foremost though this fire breather's relatively friendly side makes it surprisingly well
