in 2016 by many accounts the Cleveland Browns had finally got things right hiring offensive Guru and quarterback Whisperer Hugh Jackson as their next head coach Hugh Jackson's gonna end the Jets their first loss is going to bring a winning back to Cleveland and I'm looking forward to representing the Cleveland Browns and helping this organization get to where we know it should be Jackson was widely regarded as one of if not the top head coaching candidate at the time players were thrilled at first I really loved what's going on man you know we got a team full of guys that's buying into the new the new system and I love the way that coach Jackson is taking it I knew that that was a team and I was a coach I want to play for all the players have really been drawn to you you got to have a great offense and a great quarterback if you want to win in the NFL consistently to have a coach of this caliber coming to Cleveland was unheard of since the Browns had returned in 1999. but that enthusiasm was short-lived and what started as a struggle to win a single game in year one we're gonna keep swinging I've lost a lot right now turned into a historical disaster pretty clear about the fact that Antonio Brown into the end zone when I'm not going 1-15 well I'll be swimming in the lake [Applause] we got to change this drastically and I just don't know how we're gonna do it [Applause] [Music] the time has come for me to make good on my word on June 1st I'm jumping in the left breaking news out of Cleveland the Browns have fired head coach Hugh Jackson so what exactly happened during those years in Cleveland you implied on Twitter that you were incentivized to take explain what happened well I need to really explain that let's take a closer look but really quickly how great is it that a Gratis system back in 87 and eventually made his way to the NFL throughout the 2000s Hugh earned the reputation as a superb offensive mind most notably for two things coaching Chad Johnson and TJ housmanzada and their primes and helping a young Joe Flacco develop in Baltimore in 2010 Hugh got his third opportunity in eight seasons to be an offensive coordinator this time for the Raiders they went from a woeful 12.3 points per game the year before to a staggering 25.6 points per game with Hugh Jackson leading the offense this included a game where the Raiders put up 59 points through three quarters on the road versus Denver with that shocking level of improvement in just a season Hugh was quickly promoted to head coach after the team didn't offer Tom Cable a new contract my job is to do everything I can to take this team where we know we want to go which is to the Super Bowl but in 2011 despite a 7-4 star under Hugh the team would finish with a disappointing 8-a record then surprisingly Hugh was fired long story short he had control over the team and Personnel decisions but after the death of a longtime owner Al Davis his son Mark hired a new GM the two parties were under a bit of a power battle and ultimately the Raiders went in a Direction what was hard for me is I couldn't get another job anywhere I had to get a Lifeline thrown to me by my best friend Marvin Lewis to say he'll come coach on defense after a year on the defensive side of the ball you returned to coaching the Bengals offense and eventually proved once again how brilliant of an offensive mind he was he worked closely with Andy Dalton and helped him develop into an excellent quarterback by 2015 Dalton ranked second in the NFL in passer rating and third in qbr the Bengals had one of the top offenses in football and he was named the pfwa co-assistant coach of the year so this led me to this question why the Cleveland Browns every single game was an uphill battle because there is dysfunction at every level there wasn't necessarily A sense or a feeling that everyone was all kind of headed in the same direction Cleveland to that point was one of if not the most poorly ran franchise in the league when Hugh took the job they hadn't been to the playoffs since 2003 the second longest postseason drought of any team at the time following a 3-13 season in 2015 the Browns fired head coach Mike petten which meant that he would be the franchise's fourth head coach in five years in Hughes words you're so into it because you want to be the person that turns the Cleveland Browns around I mean that's just you build your legacy that way he was so quick to take the Browns job that he actually skipped out on his flight to New York for an interview with the Giants also the Browns made it clear in the interview process they were going with a new approach Analytics Cleveland though decided a couple year years ago man we're gonna change it all up we're gonna go like analytics by 2016. the debate over what was the best way to run a franchise can be characterized simply by two types of coaching and scouting the old school approach and the analytics approach ultimately the old school approach relies on the eye test and gut instincts whereas analytics sees the game closer to that of a spreadsheet a player being reduced to a handful of critical stats which are used to help make roster decisions in the football World many people are pretty skeptical about this new analytics approach if you've seen the baseball movie Moneyball this highlights the argument of these two Styles perfectly we are card counters at the blackjack table we're going to turn the odds on the casino and overall no team simply uses one or the other there is some sort of blend between the two the Browns in 2016 however were making it clear that after two years of research they were going to use an unprecedented analytics approach so they hired a lawyer a baseball analytics guy and Ryan Gregson who butchered the Colts one of the former Browns Players called this approach the Revenge of the Nerds I think people have a really warped view of maybe what analytics is this Approach at best was received with mixed reception one of the worst ran organizations was going to try a completely new way of roster building and when Hugh was hired he was well aware of this new approach I have somebody I really trust and who does extensive research that I can tap into that has done a good job so what else was going on with this team at the time well like I said earlier the Browns were coming off a brutal 3-13 season in 2015. entering Hugh's first season as head coach they go to the roster so much the team was nearly unrecognizable entering 2016. the big headline move was cutting ties with Johnny Manziel confirming that there was going to be some sort of quarterback search in the near future but also the franchise parted ways with so many of the teams impactful veterans this is included the team's top receiver their Pro Bowl Center their surging right tackle and three of their most impactful defensive veterans including former pro bowl free safety to Sean Gibson the man they brought in to replace Manziel was RG3 whose career had been completely derailed to that point I got my leg got hit while I was going down it was a pretty painful experience he didn't even play in 2015 and ended up playing safety on the scout team throughout the season initially the Browns possessed the number two pick some believed they were going to use this to draft Carson Wentz quarterback is about manolytics Tom Cruise in Captain Phillips or Saving Private Ryan Carson Wentz was exactly exactly what a quarterback is but they ended up trading out for more draft Capital all in all their analytics approach LED them to acquiring 14 picks in 2016. more than anybody else the two worth noting is wide receiver Corey Coleman who the team hoped would become the number one wide receiver and the surprise third round pick Cody Kessler Kessler was a quarterback that was viewed as a huge reach due to his limitations but Hugh promised everybody it would work out to the meeting everyone well you finna trust me this weekend overall the 2016 Cleveland Browns by almost all measures were seen as one of the worst rosters in the league and not much was expected of them foreign week one RG3 had won the starting job in the eyes of optimistic Browns fans like myself Imagining the 2012 rookie sensation version of him leading us to Victory is what ran through our minds instead we got instant reality just throwing a quick out to the left oh no that's some effects of the previous play it was bad enough that the team starting quarterback went on injured reserve after just one game but what happened next is just downright cruel the week two starter Josh McCown injured his shoulder and would also go on injured reserve the guy hit my elbow and just felt it after the game the Browns had to go sign another quarterback Charlie Whitehurst the week three starter was rookie Cody Kessler Under Pressure said football comes loose and after he briefly was knocked out of the game their best receiver Terrell Pryor who was literally a former quarterback was forced under Center Cody Kessler did return and started for a few games but in week 5 he would get injured and down on the turf is Cody Kessler which led to Charlie Whitehurst playing the rest of the game yeah there's been a lot of quarterbacks and if that wasn't bad enough he also got injured and then released following the game then in week 7 after Kessler was struggling mightily and now Kessler is hurt Hugh sent in the practice squad rookie Kevin Hogan to finish the game he did decent steps up over the middle but they still went on to lose so I suppose that went about exactly how we should expect it to have gone in just the first seven games six guys took meaningful snaps under Center this brutal reality along with the defensive struggles of the time were a recipe for not just losses but blowouts through 2016 the Browns lost by at least 13 points in nine of their first 14 games all signs were pointing toward this team finishing with zero wins something that only had been done once in the modern era of the NFL but fortunately for Hugh they eeked out of Victory versus the Chargers on Christmas Eve by the end of 2016 the Browns and Hugh Jackson wrapped things up with the worst record in the NFL with his job safe for the time being Hugh would go on to make his Infamous Lake Erie quote no I'm not we're not I'm not going one in 15. no so I'll be swimming in the lake over there somewhere so that's not happening the optimism had definitely diminished since he was hired have things changed no they're still awful but many understood just how bad this roster was and their terrible misfortune with injuries Hugh had dealt with more quarterbacks under Center than any other coach that season and his best receiver was a former NFL quarterback so entering 2017 what did the front office do to help him out going into the next season well they fired and hired a bunch of assistant coaches and I'd say that free agency And Trades kept them close to neutral then they acquired a large amount of draft picks including three total first-round picks the quarterbacks available to them included Mitch trubisky Patrick Mahomes and DeSean Watson with their first round Capital they elected to go a different route the Cleveland Browns select miles Garrett all right defensive end Texas A M I think the logic here was that they needed to build a better roster first but then their decision in the second round still has me scratching my head the Cleveland Browns select they shine Kaiser quarterback no today the Browns drafted quarterback DeSean Kaiser Kaiser was by far the biggest project of all the quarterbacks even his college coach said that he wasn't ready to play college coaches almost always hype up their own guys so when you have a coach who saw you almost every day over the last few years saying something like this your coach said that you should have stayed in college did it surprise you yeah the timing one of them and the way that it was pushed out there was pretty negative that just seems like a major red flag at the time I was thinking maybe they plan on sitting him for a long time since this is now the youngest roster in the NFL but that wasn't the case at all turns out they would go on to release their two veteran quarterbacks cut the recently acquired Brock Osweiler and didn't sign another guy the new thinking in the NFL is you draft him you draft him high you play them you put them out there leaving the quarterback room entering week one with Kevin Hogan who was an elevated practice squad guy the year before Cody Kessler who struggled mightily in 2016 and DeSean Kaiser the kid who needed a ton of time to develop before seeing the field going into Hughes second season as head coach it would be tough to argue that another team had a worse quarterback situation and of those three Kaiser after a rough final preseason performance was announced as the day one starter you know this is an opportunity that you know something I've been working very hard at and now it's about whatever I can do to go out there and continue to have success I've had in the last couple of games on top of that Cleveland's mostly woeful defensive roster from the previous season didn't see much upgrades outside of rookie miles Garrett the 2017 season would be considered a success if they managed to win just five total games but perhaps even that was unrealistic pretty clear about the fact that Antonio Brown will use the blocked into the end [Applause] [Applause] could have made a case for Bill O'Brien calling a timeout before that play instead it's picked former Super Bowl champion with New England Kaiser on a bootleg president [Applause] Cleveland appears to Crowell lost the football covered by the Vikings the extra down and they were just trying to get that straightened out second and goal they're gonna lunge for this here now they can't stop the clock and I don't think they're going to be able to get this ball off they're not going to be able to [Applause] action Kaiser over the middle intercepted Kaiser it's drops Kaiser pump fakes Here Comes Bosa football is loose trips there it is buried at two and now Kaiser in trouble just looking around the ball is batted into the air and Kaiser pumps to the right rolls to the left throws to the back intercepted successful conversions on fourth down here comes swachowski and the pass is intercepted by Callahan Corey Coleman in the backfield Kaiser Under Pressure somehow escapes Kaiser's pass is incomplete and that one goes right through your hands with that final drop by 2016 first rounder Corey Coleman this cemented the worst two-season run in league history let me briefly tell you the hell that was Cleveland Browns football at this point in time number one the Browns became the second franchise ever to finish 0-16 in a season this came along with some other shockingly bad stats like how the Browns had lost 50 of 55 games dating back to 2014. with the bills making the playoffs in 2017 Cleveland now possessed the longest playoff drought of any franchise number 2. DeSean Kaiser the project quarterback who needed tons of time to develop was thrown to the Wolves not only did Kaiser lead the league in interceptions but tack on his six fumbles lost with a woeful lack of production it's a it's a tough spot to be in I'm gonna win this quarterback in this league never won if there was ever a player that proved just how much young quarterbacks need to be protected it's Kaiser his confidence was shattered he went on to be traded in the off season and spent one year in Green Bay as a backup hopefully playing behind Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay will help him reset before never making another game day roster and this time he will get sacked lose the ball and Matt number three Joe Thomas he really hasn't been given an opportunity yet to prove what type of a coach he is the plan for a few years here was to try to attain the highest draft picks possible as that's going on the coaches have a hard time winning any games because of you know the deck that they're given to play with the Beloved Brown's left tackle known for never missing a snap tore his tricep seven games into the season boy this is Joe Thomas here the Iron Man of Iron Man he would never play another snap in the NFL as he went on to retire following the season number four Browns fans in an act of mockery celebrated the 0-16 season with the parade in Cleveland and number five Hugh had said that the team was going to be better than one in 15 in 2017. or he'd jump in Lake Erie as for Lake Erie it's still pretty cold um there is a certain head coach here in Cleveland that said he was going to be jumping into that Lake well his record for two seasons was the worst 32-game start by any NFL coach ever [Applause] who took a swim at the very least he was a man of his word under almost any other Circumstance the coach would have been fired by this point but with owner Jimmy Haslam's track record of firing coaches too quickly along with the fact that the front office as a whole knew that this roster wasn't great they gave Hugh one last chance in 2018. we are working towards making 2018 a much better year for the Cleveland Browns and I'm hoping to also cleanse ourselves of all the losings by jumping in so what changed going into 2018 the biggest decision was that the Browns hired a new GM the aggressive John Dorsey with the most draft capital and cap space of any team Dorsey was ready to splurge which he did in a multitude of Trades the team brought in Pro Bowl receiver Jarvis Landry veteran quarterback tarad Taylor who helped the bills reach the playoffs in 2017 and defensive back Demaryius Randle who had led the Packers and interceptions the previous year they also made a handful of free agency signings including Veteran running back Carlos Hyde draft wise the Browns possessed the number one and number four overall picks of the five major quarterback prospects to choose from Dorsey selected Baker Mayfield wow get excited excitement as this process went along everybody really loved the person moving forward and so again we're very happy to have him on our team Baker wasn't seen as the most talented of the five by any measure from my perspective he was the number four overall quarterback right however the defining trait in baker's game was less about what he did on the field as much as his Persona his confidence and bravado were commended by Hugh Jackson throughout the draft process I kind of feel like he's a Pied Piper of Oklahoma football the team also selected who they felt was the top Corner in the class in Denzel Ward fourth overall they also selected running back Nick Chubb early in the second round with some of their younger developing stars like miles Garrett prepping for year two this roster was seen as an improvement but unfortunately for Hugh he caught some tough breaks early in the 2018 season in week one they took the Steelers to overtime [Music] late in the period Joe shober intercepted this pass and took it back to the 10 yard line essentially setting up a chip shot to win but this unnecessary Block in the back cost them Major Field possession and the 43 yard attempt by Zane Gonzalez was blocked what resulting in a tie week two after this miracle throw by torod Taylor to Antonio Callaway for the end zone Zane Gonzalez missed his second extra point of the day then after going down by three Gonzalez had a chance to redeem himself by tying things up to go into overtime [Applause] he missed again and now Taylor is gonna go down after Tara Taylor got hurt Baker came in and saved the day versus the Jets a little different I agree with that helping them win their first game in a very long time [Applause] hit Browns are going to win week four with the lead it looked like the Browns had sealed the game with this run but after a controversial spot that pushed him back a full yard is close all these big plays in this game it comes down a couple inches [Music] and eventually lost McCray's kick is good to win it for the Raiders in overtime and week five the Browns escaped versus Baltimore with one of the luckiest field goals I've ever seen [Applause] through five games there was a real chance the Browns could have been 5-0 but a few missed kicks in a controversial spot LED them to a two two in one record to the defense of Hugh Jackson some of these reasons for losing were out of his control but on the contrary they had chances to still win each of those games at other points and failed to do so also Hugh didn't want to rush in rookie Baker Mayfield like what happened with DeSean Kaiser this is why as fans saw in Hard Knocks he made Baker the backup going into the season come in here the right way you've had everything the right way uh very talented young man okay and I'm a keep creating situations for you to even do more but because of Dora Taylor's injury and Baker's electric performance versus the Jets he really had no choice the next few games were rough however for Baker and the whole team Mayfield nearly intercepted team having to do much Layfield throws it away after getting blown out in week eight by Pittsburgh this dropped the team's record to 2 5-1 Tai Lou got the ax Hugh Jackson could be next we'll see this was the final straw because we have breaking news into my ear right now they just let him go Hugh Jackson yeah Hugh Jackson has been fired the Browns have fired Hugh Jackson the Browns have fired head coach Hugh Jackson so I titled this video the most miserable coaching 10 year in NFL history not just because of what happened during those two and a half years it's also due to what happened afterwards almost instantly reports came out that things were getting much better in practice Baker Mayfield had one of his best performances of the season when he had no practice time no prep against the Jets in that Thursday night and has regressed since was not a ringing endorsement for either Hugh or Haley who are offensive guys one thing to note I spoke with brown sources they said this week was the best week of practice this team has had all season long and Wednesday was the ideal practice as things were reportedly getting better immediately in Cleveland a unique twist would be added to this story a week later one of these storylines that unfolded earlier this week is Hugh Jackson recently fired from the Browns as a head coach is back in the NFL already uh Hugh Jackson now joining the Bengals staff this week he's back with the Bengals he's back with the bank that's popular to Browns fans I think it's high time that we the loyal sports fans of Cleveland band together and get a restraining order against Hugh Jackson in the Bengals final seven games they played the Browns twice considering they were in the midst of a playoff hunt two wins against their in-state rival could go a long way but from the moment Hugh Jackson joined Cincinnati it's almost as if the football Gods immediately stepped in and cursed the Bengals while simultaneously lifting the Browns to success they hadn't experienced in many years this made the Browns following contest their most anticipated game of the season at Cincinnati to take on their former coach not only did the Browns win but it was an absolute Slaughter Fest Mayfield has other designs to the back of the end zone caught with a touchdown by the early third quarter Baker Mayfield had thrown five touchdowns and Cleveland jumped out to a 35-7 lead going on to win with ease during the first half when the game began to get out of hand demarius Randle one of the guys brought in during Hugh Jackson's time in Cleveland intercepted a pass and proceeded to hand the ball to his former coach on the Bengals sideline he had a pick six he had blockers he had the sideline but he saw him he gave him the ball so slaggy it was just the way he did it was just so swaggy man so you know you need that following the game the Browns continued to Rattle off more wins while the Bengals did the opposite and these two teams met again in week 16 and it was much of the same the Browns jumped out to a 26-3 lead Midway through the fourth quarter and late in the game after a big play this happened he started to backpedal up the field and stared him down arch for what felt like an attorney when you include the Demaryius Randle moment from the other game these two confrontations were in your face reminders that hey you we are better off without you man what a ride it has been this season and I don't think any of us could feel better about where this team is headed in the future in 2018 the Browns record before Hugh Jackson was fired was 2-5-1 without him they went five and three the Bengals were 5-4 before bringing in Hugh with him on the staff they went one and six now it's definitely not fair to place the blame on Hue for the Bengals struggles late in the season however it did add fuel to the fire that there was some sort of negative energy going on around this guy you bring him in you lose you get rid of him you win he took that level of blame but it's never that simple and Hugh Jackson definitely suffered in the aftermath while Hugh went on to be released by the Bengals and to this day hasn't returned to the NFL so was it almost like your legacy was being taken away absolutely I watched it just slipped right through my hands what was the darkest point for you huh probably the piling on you know probably day four you know people not truly understanding um all of it you know there's more to it and we are football coaches but we're also human and we go through things just like everybody else maybe even doubly so so that part was hard and making trying to get people to understand that I was a human being and not just a football coach in some ways I feel bad for Hugh Jackson because he took so much of the blame for what happened but at the same time he certainly has not helped himself out much with some of the things that he said let's talk about the tanking allegations following the 2021 season the Dolphins surprisingly fired head coach Brian Flores why did this happen uh this team is going to stink forever this year we're good again let's get rid of our coach this was despite the fact that he had back-to-back winning seasons including winning eight of his last nine games a little less than a month later Flores filed a class action lawsuit against the NFL Dolphins Giants and Broncos alleging racial discrimination focusing on the Dolphins aspect of it the lawsuit additionally alleges that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross pressured Flores to deliberately lose games offering him one hundred thousand dollars for each game he lost in order for the Dolphins to get better draft picks for The Following Season Flores alleges that he was fired by Ross in retaliation for his refusal to tank to disrespect the game that way um was was was something that no trust was lost and there were certainly some some strange relationships and ultimately I think that was you know to my demise in Miami this is some serious allegations separately just one day after Flores filed a lawsuit Hugh Jackson claimed that the Browns had done something similar saying that quote he was paid 750 000 in bonuses for tanking games during his tenure with the franchise a year prior to this Hughes said that he was writing a book about his time in Cleveland and said that owner Jimmy Haslam had lied to him however just one day after making those claims similar to Brian Flores when questioned by ESPN about the seriousness of these allegations Hugh backed off I think people have taken that and run and said hey look people think that you're in on something that happened that's not the case there was a four-year plan that was crap it and I have documentation of that that I think any coach would kind of cringe at if he saw it because it talked about things that had nothing to do with winning answering the question more directly in an article Hugh said quote no I was never offered money like Brian Flores had mentioned I think this is a totally different situation but has some similarities ultimately Hugh Jackson's reputation had really sunk by the time the Browns had fired him ultimately Hugh seems to have a tendency to make decisions or statements that sound good in the moment but backfire later on the Lake Erie quote taking the Bengals drop right after getting fired by the Browns at times he would take blame for what happened and then other times take zero responsibility all these things point to short-sightedness not seeing the potential consequences down the road another example is that he took the Brown's job initially excited yet all signs pointed toward that team entering a massive rebuild and above all these things the tanking allegations only to be attracted a day later hurt you the most and this is made worse because there's evidence that Cleveland was actually tanking I would not be surprised if the truth here is Chris that the Browns had a system of incentives that would show you're really not trying to win now I and and that's a way to bake tanking into your broader structure without being obvious they just weren't as blunt and egregious as the Dolphins were with Brian Flores I think this time last year we said this is going to be multi-year rebuilding um it is has this year been harder than we thought it would be yes [Music] overall I think that Hugh Jackson is an intelligent football mind which makes him cut out to be a great coordinator in the NFL but he does lack the proper people skills necessary to be a head coach when he was in Oakland instead of taking the responsibility he called out his players after the team lost the final regular season game but as for what he was doing now I think the route that he's taken career-wise is an honorable one with question marks about him ever coaching in the NFL again should he be a head coach immediately of an of a new team based on what he just did absolutely not Hugh returned to where he started college football following the path that Deion Sanders set with coaching hbcus Hugh recently took over as the head coach at Grambling State putting that all together coaching staff all of it it was tough you know but we made it through and I think I had a better idea of what I needed to do as a head football coach why can't our minority young men okay go to an HBCU be in an environment to where they can grow as young men on and off the field and be prepared to go play and change their goals in the National Football because we create the right environment
