the 2021 NFL draft was unlike any before it eight quarterbacks were taken in the first three rounds the most in NFL draft history five of them went in the top 15 picks and the first three selections of the draft were all quarterbacks the volume of signal callers getting picked so early usually points to one of two things either the 20121 class is one of the all-time greatest in terms of prospects or there are some desperate franchises out there and they are willing to take a big swing now here we are 3 years later and we've learned a ton about these guys even though we have seen some success at times there has been a lot more struggle as most of these first rounders are not on their original teams they were drafted by and project as backups moving forward now before we continue this video 2021 quarterback class with the number one pick the Jacksonville Jaguars select Trevor Lawrence this was a no doubter there's a better chance of Bryson dambo being the starting quarterback for the Tampa Buccaneers next year there's absolutely no way that uh Trevor Lawrence isn't going to Jacksonville first overall Lawrence had been regarded as a generational Prospect receiving the level of hype that most of us have only seen with Andrew luck he's pff's highest graded Prospect ever Mel Kyper has been scouting since 1979 and lorrence is his fourth highest rated quarterback ever and virtually every other TV pundit agreed with these t types of sentiments he's playing at such a high level I I think it's a no-brainer that he's the number one overall pick he could be the player that finally turns things around for the Jaguars the hype machine since high school had been off the chart literally on a scale from 1 to 100 on 24/7 Sports Lawrence was rated a 101 even his NFL scouting report on Walter football.com had 43 traits listed as strengths with just two weaknesses he even got got the whole suck for luck treatment with his own slogan tank for Trevor with his combination of rare size athleticism leadership intangibles and hair Trevor Lawrence appeared to be the dream poster boy for an NFL franchise Trevor Lawrence has the potential to completely change a down in the doldrums franchise but problems out of Lawrence's control emerged during his rookie year in Jacksonville the hiring of Urban Meyer proved to be a complete disaster what a fraud said that he was studying the NFL and then 3 months in didn't know who Aaron Donald was what a total complete sham you know the saying that what you do in the darkness will always come out in the light is why Urban Meyer got fired you reap what you sow it was a catastrophe so much so that Meyer was fired before his first season of NFL coaching was over looking at Trevor laen performance on the surface it was disappointing the pass to the near side and that is incomplete as he tied for the lead league in interceptions but it was behind one of the worst offensive lines in the league a weak receiving core and atrocious coaching NFL Executives felt that his rookie year wasn't a fair evaluation due to all these circumstances the difference between year 1 and year two was night and day deep for Christian Kirk he's got with a proven NFL coach in Doug Peterson La developed into a pro bowler helping lead the Jags on a crazy five-game win streak to save their season and against the odds made the playoffs and then in the Wild Card versus the Chargers after the worst first half imaginable where Lawrence threw four interceptions fires and that is going to be picked again he pulled off the Houdini act in the second half rallying the troops all the way back to a thrilling 31 to3 win after a loss to the the Chiefs in the divisional round the expectation was that Lawrence was going to be a Surefire top 10 maybe even top five guy in year three and the Jags were going to be Super Bowl contenders season I think they take care of business against the Titans and go 11 and six and get back to the playoffs okay I'm excited about that only that didn't happen oh my God hurt oh God he no after an 8 and3 start Lawrence suffered an injury versus the Bengals on Monday Night Football and the team lost in upset fashion from that moment Lawrence wasn't the same he hadn't been having a spectacular year to that point and it only got worse as he finished the year in disappointing fashion in his final four starts he accounted for seven touchdowns and 10 turnovers and the Jags went from the front runner in the division to out of the playoffs whole season comes down to one game and then you look back and it's like a few plays your whole season comes down to a few plays and we just weren't able to make them finishing with a 21st ranked passer rating and a high turnover percentage Lawrence certainly regressed in his third season now things are at the point where we've seen some promise but it's been inconsistent and he's certainly nowhere near the level of hype that he received to be overrated people have to view you as good and I don't think if you just pull a lot of people they view him as some high-end player now he's at the point in his career where talks of big contracts come into play but almost nobody's argument that Lawrence is worth top market value it's tough to pay a guy a huge contract that performs similarly to Gardener minu a career journeyman according to nfl.com Lawrence ranked out as the 15th best quarterback in 2023 compared to the other so-called generational prospects Lawrence is nowhere near those guys although compared to the other quarterbacks in this class you like the chances that Lawrence will at least be better than them at this point that's not saying much the New York Jets select Zack Wilson quarterback BYU 2020 was a life-changing year for BYU's Zack Wilson he went from struggling starter to a superstar statistically this caused his draft stock to shoot into the stratosphere I think the best quarterback in this Draft when it's all said and done is going to be Zach Wilson he was a virtual no-name turned early first round pick that even had some NFL Scouts rating higher than Trevor Lawrence in their evaluations and this throw on its prod day highlights as to why first of all Steve mentioned oh my goodness that is just a silly F that is that's ridiculous the truth was Wilson projected as a true boom or bust because of his glaring inconsistencies most fun quarterback to watch in the 2021 draft class without a doubt but it is oneyear production against Bad teams he benefited tremendously from playing mostly lower division schools who were significantly worse than BYU during 2020 this certainly inflated his stats and gave him the ability to get away with bad habits Zach Wilson so far in his career has shown the ability to dominate garbage struggle against even good teams like San Diego State they do not exist in the AFC East from early into the draft process the Jets fell in love with Wilson's upside and made him their future franchise quarterback well from the start it was a struggle Wilson joined guys like deshun Kaiser Zack murger and Blake Bortles by throwing an interception in each of his first five career starts wison over the middle and it's intercepted overall his rookie year was rough intercepted picked off by Adrien Phillips as he finished with more interceptions than touchdowns and the Jets under Wilson went 3 and 10 in all fairness the team was atrocious [Music] he had a battle line and one of the worst receiving units in the league but on the flip side he was the team's fourth best quarterback in terms of completion percentage and quarterback rating year two was even more of a nightmare a miniscus tear in the preseason halted Wilson's progress and didn't allow him to return till week four after returning Wilson's poor play by mid-season led to his benching and emotion all the way to third Stringer behind Mike White and Joe flacko the biggest thing with Zach is the young man needs a reset there's some basic fundamental things that have gotten really out of whack for him and this is just an opportunity for him to find a way to reconnect to all the different things that we fell in love with during the draft process he did eventually return as the starter but struggled badly and was benched for a second time by this point Wilson was widely recognized by the NFL world as a bust two turbulent years that seem to have reached a point of no return and the Jets opinion of Wilson was solidified when this happened the New York Jets have agreed to terms on a trade for Aaron Rodgers but after a shocking injury to Aaron Rodgers just four plays into the 2023 regular season and now Rogers sits down he's coming out of the game Wilson was thrust back in under the circumstances and played out most of the Season it went just as poorly as the previous years now 3 years in the Jets are looking to move on from Zack Wilson but are struggling to find any suitors who's going to trade for him exactly his salaries guaranteed this year they're stuck like secret trade like nobody's trading for Zach Wilson that's not going to happen right now I saw a Reddit post highlighting just how catastropic Wilson's career as a starter had been through three seasons it's pretty insane when you see that he ranked out nearly dead last in most categories all three years with the third pick the ners surprised many going with the FCS standout trade Lance quarterback North Dakota State Lance physically looked the part possessing traits that had many Scouts excited he had been absolutely dominant in video game fashion at NDSU the only downside was that he played just one game in 2020 due to co so most of his evaluation was from two seasons prior to the NFL draft Lance was considered more of a longer longer term project than any of the other first round quarterbacks he needed the time to sit and learn he had so little experience entering the NFL plus was super young something about those highlights give me some pause because I look at the endzone and it says penguins like he's playing against Youngstown State as expected his rookie year began with him backing up Jimmy G and he saw a few snaps early but an injury to Jimmy G thrust Lance into the action in week four which went de recently well although they lost Lance started in week five in place of the injured Jimmy G and had an okay performance Lance first snap and Lance showing his wheels but the news of a sprained knee after the game made him unavailable for a few weeks he didn't start another game until late in the regular season which showed some promising moments once again but Lance went back to the bench for the postseason the logic here seemed to be that Shanahan must have felt that Jimmy G was the team's best chance to win the Super Bowl and not the time to develop Lance and just let him play in year two Lance was named the starter but in week 2 suffered a devastating season-ending ankle injury that halted his career really before it ever got going which was a double whammy because backup seventh round rookie Brock pie proved to be a diamond in the rough P back to throw pressure coming steps away looking to run and he walks it in pry was so good and so polished that the ners despite using a first round pick on Lance preferred Brock pie because it was clear that Lance still had a ways to go in his development he got screwed by injuries but clearly didn't do enough in practice to impress Shanahan otherwise he would have started 2023 going into Lance's thirdd season it was clear the Niners were ready to move on when they brought in Sam darnold to be a backup this led to a trade at Dallas where Lance served as the team's third string quarterback throughout 2023 is he a bust well to this point it appears so if he can't even get on the field and no quarterback hungry team is trading for him that's not a great sign retrospectively the ners weren't a good fit at all Shanahan likes a certain style quarterback that follows his system and Lance was not it so it feels like a baffling draft pick looking back you stumbled ass backwards into Brock pie maybe that'll save you but your process is broken if you drive your fancy car off a cliff and land next to a hidden treasure doesn't mean it was a good idea as the most athletic quarterback in the class Justin Fields was seen as a more physically gifted Dak Prescott he measured in at 63 227 ran a 4440 and showed off his arm Talent during his Pro Day Josh Allen provides a blueprint for how to evaluate Justin Fields Josh Allen was one who I had questions on but because of gifts he goes to Buffalo they build around it if someone takes that same approach with Justin Fields I'll come back here in 2 years and we're going to talk about oh my God how do we underestimate Justin Fields but there were certainly questions about his game his throwing motion I don't love it's not it's it's unnatural and that's long and that's deliberate yeah there are some things to like about the throwing but the things he needs to fix are not where I just go oh they're slam dunk he'll definitely fix them I see guys do this all the time at one point Fields was seen as the second best quarterback of the class but by draft night fell all the way to the 11th pick to the Bears as the result of a trade which made him the fourth quarterback off the board to begin his rookie season Fields was the backup to Andy Dalton but was quickly tossed into action now Williams goes in motion and feels his first play as a bear is a complete pass throughout the season field showcased what made him a special player at times including a 100y yard rushing performance versus the ners but overall it was a pretty disappointing year that time Fields just sails at a mile high Fields Took a ton of sacks holding on to the ball too long fumbled the ball 12 times and ended the year with more turnovers than touchdowns also he got banged up a lot and to add insult the injury the team's head coach was fired now the following year the bears under Matt eflu were a disaster as a team once again finishing 3 and 14 with the worst defense in the NFL despite this Fields actually showed a ton of Promise despite any real talent around him he rushed for over 1100 yards which was the most of any quarterback in the NFL look at Fields fly first down while putting up better passing stats than his rookie season Fields finished with the 16th best qbr in the league right about average and bearswire gave Fields a B+ grade for his second season as Chicago's quarterback but but year three was a step back despite the offense getting new weapons like DJ Moore the problems in fields game continued to Showcase falls out another field turnover the fumbles holding on to the ball too long leading to sacks struggling in fourth quarters even when he played well it wasn't consistent enough for Bears fans to feel good about it overall in three seasons if you were to just watch Justin Field's highlights you'd be convinced that he was a top 10 quarterback in the league bu he's got a man more problem is the holes in his game which have led to Major inconsistencies don't seem to be getting fixed even though it's only been 3 years we often have a pretty good idea of what a quarterback is by this point because the Bears pulled off a big time trade with Carolina the year prior they took the rights to the number one pick in 2024 and with Caleb Williams on the horizon the inevitable move was that Fields was going to be traded and if you needed any proof of his valued NFL coaches the Steelers traded for Fields with a sixth round pick they get a guy who many thought last year was on the verge of breaking out to be the backup apparently to the guy who was on track to have a bronze bust in Canton I would have been happy if they got one of them never in my wildest dream Shannon did I believe they'd get Russell Wilson and Justin fields and I think the Pittsburgh Steelers have had a better free agency thus far than anybody is Justin Fields a bust well he certainly wasn't as good as the Bears hoped was Chicago a mess as well yeah but are there holes in his game of course perhaps being a part of a better organization in Pittsburgh will help him he's worn the responsibility of being a franchise quarterback but but still he gets an opportunity to come into a community and learn from a guy that's been doing it for over a decade but at the same time the Steelers haven't been impressive offensively in years either intercepted Deontay Johnson slipped and fell Ward went up and picked it off many predicted that M Jones was going to be the third quarterback selected when the ners were on the board if you trust your system I don't want the best athlete cuz the best athlete's going to like any great athlete want to show his skills if you could sing you'd sing all day in the car in the shower I don't want guys running out of my offense instead Jones was the final of the five quarterbacks taken in the top 15 out of the five Jones was the least impressive Prospect physically there was a ceiling he didn't showcase a big arm and wasn't the most athletic guy in the world not even close the real reason anybody would take ma Jones is that they want a guy who can plug in and play day one he was the most Pro ready of the prospects due to his pinpoint accuracy and ball placement but here's what I found odd looking at his scouting report on nfl.com Lance zerline gave him a round one grade but finished his report by saying quote Jones has good backup to low-end starter potential to me this sounds like the type of player that you use a mid-round pick on not a first-rounder but in a league where teams are desperate for quarterbacks I guess that equates to a first round player and the kinds of things that he is able to make up for with his mind that he doesn't have in terms of physical skill lead people to believe that he may be the very best one and ultimately May wind up being the very best one at least the Patriots thought so the six time world champion New England Patriots select M Jones during the preseason of his rookie year Jones beat out Cam Newton and was named the starting quarterback right away he was impressive setting an NFL completion record for a debuting rookie and on the side and the this was a trend that continued throughout his rookie year he set multiple rookie records he tied Tom Brady for the most consecutive completions by a patriot and led the patriots on a seven-game win streak throughout the middle of the season and to top this all off the Patriots made the playoffs and M Jones was named to the Pro Bowl is Matt Jones a hall of fam hell yeah is Mt Jones going to end up winning seven super bowls for the New England Patriots y for his performance in his rookie season Jones was named to the 2021 PFW all rookie team and finished second in the offensive Rookie of the Year voting behind Demar Chase however things took a step back in 2022 offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left the key thing to know here is the Patriots are going to run the same offensive system to just try to keep it as consistent as possible for M Jones who they you know they obviously feel like has a very promising future and former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia who had never called offensive plays took over for the offense right away Jones struggled mightily the difference between year 1 and year two was substantial Jones became erratic anti in the pocket and a turnover machine he had gone from slightly above average passing to one of the worst in the league oh that's a duck in the air a trend that continued in 2023 year three marked the end of a few things in New England namely bill bich being let go after the season and the M Jones era crashing to a halt he was benched not once not twice but three separate times throughout the season it was clear that the confidence Jones displayed as a rookie was shattered yeah just a bad quarterback play and um wasn't good enough by me so if the quarterback doesn't play well you got no chance he took a ton of heat from the press and the coaching staff especially because he made some of the most backbreaking mistakes it was even reported that his teammates didn't like him you know there are people who will use the word brat or Brady but for the most part MC Jones works his ass off so you don't care so much but when you do care is when you're losing the downward spiral of his career proves just how big of a mental game playing quarterback really is he came in as a rookie and set records and just two years later couldn't stop making the most jarring mistakes that were unimaginable when he was a rookie he ended year three one of if not the worst starter in the NFL and it was clear the Patriots were ready to move on not a surprise at all that M Jones's tenure in New England is ending I think that was very clear back in December after being traded for a sixth round pick Jones will serve as the backup to his former draft acquaintance Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville obviously had a great opportunity in New England and can't thank them enough but happy to be here you know as a kid from Jacksonville it's it's definitely a dream come true [Music] as for this class as a whole there's not a whole lot of positive to write home about none of the later round quarterbacks have done much outside of Davis Mills Mills was a 2-year starter in Houston before being demoted to backup after the team selected CJ stra now as much as this class has struggled it makes sense historically as only about 25 to 30% of first round quarterback succeed so to take that percentage and apply it to this upcoming 2024 class who do you think will be the one or two prospects that will possibly succeed Caleb is looking for just about anybody this is where he really is devastating when he starts becoming a maestro look out there it is touchdown [Music]
