he showed him he's telling nate newton he said i got him right up under the throat and he said i put him right on the ground erg williams in his prime was one of the best players in the nfl regardless of position but if it wasn't for a horrific accident he could have been the greatest lineman possibly the league has ever seen our next video is about eric williams sit back and enjoy in 1991 the dallas cowboys selected erg williams a young offensive taco out of central state university in william's rookie season he was a backup at right and left taco to nate newton and mark tuney in his first season he made his first appearance in the starting lineup after a mark 2-8 injury but during training camp the following season william's dominant play forced newton to return back to his natural position at guard which made williams a permanent starter a right tacu this mix-up made the offensive line a dominant force that would tear through the league like wildfire in the 1992 and 93 seasons eric williams and the cowboys offensive line dominated everything moving it didn't matter who it was whether it was the league leader in sax the philadelphia eagles clyde simmons in 1992 or the legendary reggie white whenever they lined up in front of eric williams it all ended when the eagles faced the cowboys in 92 eric williams went up against reggie white it was the battle of the gods reggie white a legend and erg williams a young warrior who had a mean streak that were of the likes of dick buckers and randy white normally when defenders played against reggie white they admired him feared him even well we knew what we could do you know it was kind of statements made that we that the offensive line had confidence that they could block us we were determined to come in here and prove that they couldn't not so with erg williams erg williams didn't want to shake hands and be friends he didn't care about how many commercials white was in or how many socks he had or how many autographs he had signed on his way to the game williams wanted to demoralize reggie white and embarrass him reggie white came into the game with anticipations on stocking aikman but eventually he went from trying to sock aikman to just trying to stay alive and survive the onslaught that eric williams was giving him throughout the game eric williams literally dismantled the legend physically oh and he didn't do it because he had better technique than white this wasn't that kind of game technique was the last thing on erg williams mind every time white lined up across from williams he turned it into an outright brawl and reggie white knew it there was this one game where according to white williams would punch white in his throat and take his thumb and poke white in the eye trying to blur his vision after the game reggie white was heard leaving the field going into the locker room cursing the crowd because of the frustration that williams calls throughout the game what's interesting eric williams idolized reggie white growing up i know it sounds weird right but it's true born in philadelphia in the late 60s he played football for john bartram high school in southwest philly williams was a massive defensive lineman for the braves unfortunately when it came down to getting recruited by a d1 school william's poor grade scared off many colleges so he had to take his talents to central state university during his freshman year at central state he was moved from the lineman to offensive taco where he would grow into a college alleged as a sophomore he was named the starter at left taco and an all-american eric williams presence was so dominant that the marutas won 41 out of 47 games during his time in 1990 the marutas destroyed teams by an average of 37 points on their way to winning the naia championship in 1990 when the cowboys drafted eric williams in 1991 as the 70th pick overall williams was still a raw talent remember up until that point williams had just started playing offensive lineman three years before so williams was raw with a high ceiling and no other time made this more evident than when mark tuney went down with an injury which forced eric williams into the starting lineup what made matters worse was that in his first game he had to match up against the cardinals great ken harvey harvey torched williams with three sacks all coming in the first half the wizard jimmy johnson figured out that williams was playing the wrong side of the line instead of playing left tacu johnson switched him to right tackle where he would stay for the rest of his career this move is how the matchup between his idol reggie white started as i alluded to before williams destroyed white in the 92 regular season game where he achieved the nfc offensive play of the week award by making white a non-factor throughout the game however during the 1992 nfc division title williams thailand would be nationally recognized when he would dominate white in front of the nation and i'm being nice according to peter king in the 32 1v1 plays in the divisional game between white and williams not once did white touch the ball carrier williams made arguably the greatest defensive player in league history in the prime of his career a non-factor aikman would throw for 200 passing yards and two touchdown passes in a dollar's 3410 route of philadelphia eagles williams legend had amazingly grown from the time of his humble beginnings back in philadelphia to dominate against idol on national television by the end of the 1992 season dallas had won a super bowl and williams was perhaps the best lineman in all of football leading a rushing attack that led the league in rushing yards two years in a row williams would help lead dallas to another super bowl win in 93 but soon after tragic unexpectedly showed up in 1994 williams would be involved in a serious one car accident which caused him to miss the remainder of the season an accident that would require surgery for the most part of his body including his face and knees he missed the entire 94 season i always wondered what would have happened had erg williams played in the 94 championship game versus the 49ers a game that took away larry island from guard to fill in for williams at right tackle island struggled all game the offensive line gave her four socks and dallas only had 99 rushing yards on the date williams would eventually gain his health back but it was clear from the moment he first returned to the field after the 94 season he would never be the same again that dominant player who terrorized opponents earlier in his career was gone williams was still good enough to make the pro bowl three times after the injury and was a major contributor in the cowboys winning their last super bowl of the 90s in 1995 but one can't help to ask what if could eric williams been the greatest lineman in the history of the league had it not been for the car accident until next time thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe and like if you want more content
