Man, this resonates with me so much today! I didn't get a job I wanted (found out yesterday) and am stuck in a job I am starting to loathe, purely for income to raise my two children. That other job would have been so interesting and worthwhile. Felt very sorry for myself last night, are loads of chocolate and feeling better now I've had a cry!
When Fromm says that more people are worried about the flu season than the atomic bomb it reminded me of how more people are worried about The Kardashians than global warming.
But then I realized at least back then you didn't have people saying that the Russian bomb was probably a hoax.
I like his definition of a useless job selling useless comoddities. On a salesman:
"Useless is a relative term, if in order to meet his quota he makes people buy things which he knows they shouldn't buy them, then indeed in terms of the needs of these people, they are useless"
