The Meaning of Baptism

in this short video we're gonna look at what baptism is and why it matters when Jesus finished his mission on earth and he was giving his final Commission to his disciples this is what he told them among other things he said go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them there it is and teaching them to obey everything I've taught you in other words we all need to get baptized and we need to be baptizing others and we know that his disciples took this literally because Peter on the day of Pentecost were a whole bunch of people were gathered to watch this miraculous outpouring of God's Spirit on that day used very similar language he called out to the crowd and preached them he said repent and be baptized there it is every one of you no exceptions in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins they were asking what do we do to be saved and he said this repent have a change of heart and mind that leads you to put your faith in Christ and then be baptized every one of you so why baptism it's very clear because Jesus commands it but the next question is then what is baptism and to understand baptism completely in fully we need to look at what Jesus did on the cross Jesus took our place on the cross was the payment for our sins and when he died he's placed in a tomb and then three days later rose again triumphant over death and grave and sin and the devil so here's the deal when we put our faith in Jesus we reap the benefits of what Jesus accomplished when you get baptized in water you are demonstrating your identification with Jesus death and resurrection by faith what you're saying is Jesus has died to pay for my sins I have put my faith in him what that means is that when Christ was in the tomb he in some mysterious way took us with him into the tomb so his death to sin is our death to sin and then when he rose from the grave we rose with him into a new life now obviously when we get baptized especially publicly and we confess with our mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord what we're doing is we're proclaiming our allegiance to Jesus but here's the really cool thing this symbolic act actually takes on more than just symbolic power because through faith we're experiencing in a fresh way the death of our old self and the rising of our new self and new life in Christ so there's actually a spiritual kickstart that happens when we get baptized so baptism is for anyone who is repented of their sins who put their trust in Jesus so the question then becomes what are you waiting for
